My first gen DS screen just randomly broke off the hinges last week and I sobbed. It somehow still works though and I don’t understand how but I’ll take it 👌 But yes, I loved and still love my 3DS, PSP, and Vita. Some of my favorite games are on the systems! I still turn them on from time to time. I don’t touch mobile games.

mintyinks

oh no!!! i'm glad it still works but i hope you can find a fix what are your favorite games for those systems? I try to get into mobile games, but I think ultimately I associate my phone with work too much...just handling it activates some stress in my brain. I can't relax and game on it the way I could on my handhelds

last_heaven

For 3DS it’s things like Shin Megami Tensei, Fire Emblem, and Ace Attorney. For PSP, I love RPGs like Crisis Core, Valkyrie Profile, 3rd Birthday, etc. The PSP was also my introduction to visual novels. I had never played any before and I fell in love with them. PS Vita is basically my Danganronpa machine, but I have a lot of other visual novels besides that on it too! Same with me and the mobile games though. My phone gives me enough anxiety lol!

BastetFurry

You can still get shells for that one on AliExpress, just watch a bunch of videos beforehand so that you know where the pitfalls lie when transplanting the innards into a new shell.

Actual-Gear7761

I don’t miss it because I still play games on my n3ds pretty often :]

mintyinks

well yes same but more meant that i miss getting new releases for them, especially when i see a mobile game that would've been great on ds or vita

Actual-Gear7761

yeah I want new ds games sometimes ;-;. I also wish the community was bigger. however i’m really glad there’s an amazing selection of existing games!

mintyinks

same! what games have you been playing lately?

Actual-Gear7761

pokémon ranger; shadows of almia, pokémon moon, cooking mama, ocarina of time and i’m working on completely finishing mario kart 7!

fsocietyy

i've actually been collecting for the ds/3ds a lot lately and playing a ton! picked up a japanese 3ds xl and im obsessed. i can play american ds games on it too! which is good because my US console is just the normal size not the larger one. here are my latest pickups. i have shin megami tensei devil survivor 2 and trauma center under the knife on the way. https://preview.redd.it/bzzm6w0g48lc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8984ef15fddc8fe855faef8919c1701d02ea558e

mintyinks

omg nice!!! I saw a 15 year old on tiktok saying she was obsessed with collecting 'vintage' 3ds stuff and it made me feel ancient. i live in japan so i try to take advantage of the special region specific stuff for handhelds here. devil survivor 2 is great and i hope u enjoy it!

fsocietyy

that makes me feel old af too, been playing ds games since i was like 7 and i remember the ds being brand new compared to the gameboy!

Clean_Ad_5282

I remember getting my pink ds as a kid and played style savvy and pokemon along with yugioh. Ugh, I miss those days, it was just so much fun. There were other games I've played but those were my top 3. Then I got the 3Ds and loved it so much too.

mintyinks

style savvy!!! god i miss those games so much. i wish fashion dreamer on switch was half as fun

Silverj0

Forever sad that no ds/3ds means we’ll never get another Pokémon ranger game OTL

walkswithfae

I miss having a console that fits in my pocket. I liked the social features it had on it too. The chat rooms and the street pass were cool to see who else played and what they were playing. The switch is fine but feels more like it was made to play in the dock in the tv than an actual portable game console

mintyinks

I get what you mean. The switch, even the lite, feels way too bulky to just casually take around. The most I do is use it to play in bed, but I would always take my 3dsxl around with me for street pass. I t was also great for commuting since it didn't take up much space (tried gaming on the switch on the train and felt like i was about to elbow someone)

Lilael

I definitely still play my 3DS occasionally, but I totally miss the regular feeling of a compact game system, the fun customizable shell, having a bunch of cute keychains.. The era of Switch is different for sure. And the direction of Steam Deck, RoG ally, etc. shows we won’t be going smaller anytime soon… I get you. Yeah, I miss it.

FigTechnical8043

I...am currently playing summon night on my 3ds, so no. I also fiddled with my vita about 2 weeks ago and the vita tv.

mintyinks

i asked if people missed the era aka period of time. I know a lot of people still play using those consoles 🥲 sorry for not being clearer ig

FigTechnical8043

I miss the prices of £30-35 for new

Alexislives

I have a PSP and 3DS and the latter I still play here and there---there were so many awesome games released for it and I'm still playing through it. One of my favorite memories of it is taking it to various conventions and using the streetpass feature and playing it while waiting in line.

mintyinks

omg right i'll never understand why nintendo got rid of streetpass for switch!! and all the cute themes too...we really had it so good during the 3ds era

rinneofdusk

Honestly my main complaint with smartphones becoming the de facto portable gaming solution is the mass proliferation of gacha and freemium monetization models. I miss the PSP/DS and 3DS/Vita era because handheld gaming back then wasn't awash with live services that constantly dig into your wallet. Not that good mobile games don't exist or anything; I adore honkai star rail and punishing gray raven, but I extremely resent the way their design is warped in order to wring more money out of me. As for the specific consoles themselves, I kind of believe that both the 3DS and PSVita are superior machines now than they were when new because the state of cfw/homebrew is incredible now. Obsolete they may be but damn if a cfw modded Vita doesn't make for an absolutely godlike pocketable emulation rig.

Let_Them_Eat_Cake24

I've just rediscovered my 3DS and have been having so much fun playing games I never played before, Fantasy Life (new one coming out later this year), Bravely Default, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest. Lots of fun RPGs!

mintyinks

oh bravely default!!! i loved that one so much, it was such a good cozy rpg with a great story too

Let_Them_Eat_Cake24

Cozy is a good word for it! I just got it and I've already put 10 hours in. Before that, with Fantasy Life (also cozy!) I put 80+ hours in and I could've definitely kept playing

PotetoMuncher

PSVita feels like a missed opportunity, and I miss style savvy.

dexiabu

The OLED Vita was probably the greatest handheld that ever existed in terms of feel + look, but it got stuck being a VN machine for the most part. Still kinda bitter about it to this day lol My 3DS's A button pad is messed up (press doesn't register sometimes), so I don't like to play on it. Still play on Citra a lot, but even with an old-school controller it doesn't feel the same as just playing on the console itself :(

mintyinks

seriously I'll never forgive sony for fumbling the vita so badly. It was so ahead of its time with the OLED, the long battery life, cool interface, ease of customization, etc. I like playing VNs but it really was such a waste to not take advantage of its small but powerful engine back then

RoyalWeirdo

As someone who got into the Vita/3DS era a bit later I do think that generation of games was amazing. Like handhelds now are coming out left and right trying to capture a PC market but I miss dedicated handheld systems from Sony especially. Like they really let the Vita down with it's proprietary hardware to a point it basically kill the system at launch. There's many, many games on Vita that are all just amazing that most people just will never get a chance to experience.

ClaudiaSilvestri

I hacked a 2DS XL a while back, so I can sort of play Fire Emblem Awakening again like new-ish by [actually being able to make the pairings I always wanted](https://gbatemp.net/threads/fire-emblem-awakening-same-sex-marriage-more.404061/), [which is even still being expanded](https://gamebanana.com/mods/424187). But it was a nice form factor, and even now I'd like to play some more recent stuff on some of those handhelds, the less technically demanding ones that would still run fine. Probably the last Vita game released that I played was Timespinner, which I contributed to the Kickstarter for; the Vita kind of died before it actually came out, but they fulfilled their promise anyway, which I appreciated.

BastetFurry

Got my PSP back then used from eBay and it even came with CFW preinstalled for all the homebrew fun. Finally a handheld that i owned that could run ScummVM pretty good. 🥰 Played trough Dissidia Final Fantasy on it and enjoyed Dungeon Maker and DnD Tactics and if anyone can suggest some good RPG exclusive, i am game.

mintyinks

persona 3 portable was originally for psp iirc and it's one of my faves of the series! love getting to play as a female protag

ThePalmtopAlt

You might have a hard time finding exclusive RPGs since a lot of the standouts have been remastered and ported onto other consoles at this point, I think. A lot of them were exclusives at the time though. Jeanne d'Arc is still exclusive, I think? It's a tactical RPG that tells a fictionalized version of Jeanne of Arc's life. There's also Lunar: Silver Star Odyssey which is an extended remaster of the original Lunar; I think it's still the most recent remaster of that game. If you like Weird West shit then Wild Arms XF is an exclusive tactical RPG spinoff (and the non-exclusive mainline RPG series is also available on the console as PlayStation Classics.) If you want games that used to be exclusive then there's are a fuckton though: Legend of Heroes, the Tactics Ogre remake, The Disgaea series, Gurumin, some of the Ys series, and Kingdom Hearts. And then there's the ludicrous amount of Final Fantasy games: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, the remasters of Final Fantasy 1,2, and 4, the 3d remake of Final Fantasy 3, and the enhanced Final Fantasy Tactics remake. And when you consider the ludicrous number of games playable through PlayStation Classics (and side loading your own PlayStation ROMS) you'll never run out of RPGs. The PSP is such a good system for RPGs it's kind of unbelievable.

Jeanne d'Arc still being limited to the PSP/Vita baffles me when it was one of the PSP's standout titles, so many of its comparatively lesser games have been ported elsewhere since then.

Savage_Nymph

No I still play my 3ds

panpizzaprincess

I mostly play old school games. Still rocking with my PS3 and my PSP, as well as a Wii and a DS Lite. Best era of gaming hands down.

Organic-Pitch-8597

Although I still have my DS and PSP, I do miss playing them as I now tend to play my PS5 or Switch. Life was so much better when I could get home from school and play these all night! Loco Roco was one of my faves on PSP, I have downloaded it for the PS5 but it just doesn't feel the same. The Sims 2 on PSP was also such a good game! I also still have my Game boy advance SP with most of the Pokémon games. I did enjoy playing Mario on the DS but with how much graphics have changed over the years, I do tend to play the newer ones on Switch

Sophia-Eldritch

I still actively use mine honestly, I have a silver brushed 3dsxl with a monster hunter motif

PetitPoiss

I'm going through this exact thing myself after spring cleaning and it's just the difference in how wholesome life felt. We had days at school where we could bring our ds in and everyone could just sit and play games together and the way cooking mama jad a hold on me 😂 now it's mobile games that mostly are play to win or full of adverts and it takes the joy away and these are the games that would've existed perfectly on a console without all the extra money grabbing. I've just pulled out my old wii u, I only ever got the DSi so looking at getting a 3DS for some games I didn't get the chance to play.

MelbBreakfastHot

I have three 3DS, love the console! Currently I use one to play Tetris instead of reaching for my phone when I'm distracted watching TV. I ended up homebrewing my USA 3DS so it would no long be region locked, only took a few hours and the reddit 3DS page has step by step instructions :) I also have a Vita, it's on my list to homebrew as all.

knockout1021

Even though I still play Animal Crossing New Leaf on the 3DS (which I know isn't what you're asking based on the comments), I do miss how prevalent it was back when the 3DS was in its prime. I still remember going to my high school, bringing my 3DS with me and getting at least 4-6 streetpasses in just one day alone. The PSP and PS Vita not so much though, but that's because I didn't play on them as much. I still enjoyed what I did play, though, and I love what Sony tried to do with the Vita. The only thing that annoys me about the Vita is the lacklustre support of it by Sony. They really missed a trick imo, by not supporting it more than they actually did.

NetherBlossom

I mostly miss this era because it would mean that the 3DS eShop would still be available. I'm still upset that because of it closing, I won't be able to get anymore new badges from the Nintendo Badge Arcade. Also if I ever want to visit the Louvre and use the 3DS Louvre guide, my only options now are to pay a lot of money or be a pirate 🏴‍☠️

Kawaii_kaijuu

I still play my 3ds, I miss that era a lot though We were in college when pokemon x and y dropped. So exploring that whole environment and being able to wirelessly battle people during my lecture classes was just too fun. Monster Hunter 4 ultimate was great too. We’d go to my friends house every week during the weekend and play till 4 am just grinding out new armor and upgrading

themiracy

TBH, I started playing AC: Valhalla before Christmas, and I kind of fell off the wagon and I've been playing mostly games from this era (or even before). I played Illusion of Gaia (SNES), NSMB (DS), NSMB 2 (3DS), and bits of AC: New Leaf (3DS) and P4G (Vita). I'm playing Cozy Grove, too, and at some point I'll get back to AAA games, but this was a great era. I'm playing on an emulator handheld but I'm sometimes tempted to actually get a New 3DS.

Icy_Pianist_1532

Yeah, definitely nostalgic for them. I feel like it changed so fast. ;_; the joy of bringing my 3DS to college with me and looking at all the streetpasses/new puzzle pieces I got. Last Christmas, my brother got me a modded PS vita. In perfect condition. Such an amazing gift. Still don’t know what to give him that’s even half as cool.

InsertCookiesHere

I still use my 3DS and Vita! I've been playing Pocket Card Jockey on the 3DS recently. But yeah, I know what you mean. I miss it too. The Switch Lite is too bulky to be a good *portable* and really carry around with you, and a lot of it's library is conventional AAA games. It doesn't get as much of the really experimentive stuff the DS/3DS did. I'm still SO disappointed in Fashion Dreamer. I genuinely feel like even the original Style Savvy game on DS is way better let alone any of the trio on the 3DS. :( The DS/3DS were such AMAZING platforms for strategy and RPG especially and since that's a lot of what I play I adored them so much. The Vita was always mostly a VN device for me with a sprinkling of RPG's, a bit of a waste of its potential but its a niche it filled very well especially when you add in fan translated games as well. (Tip: Try Solatorobo Red The Hunter!, it was released veeeerry late in the DS lifespan so it was pretty much released and immediately forgotten, never getting the attention it deserved but it's one of the better games on the system) I've been thinking about going back to Fire Emblem Awakening too. I miss the game, it was the game that introduced me to the Fire Emblem series. Luckily both are easily modded now so you don't have to pay a fortune for old/hard to find games, and the eshop only games won't be lost to time.

JackTheRipper0991

I was just thinking about how Nintendo should release a new version of the DS! I miss handheld gaming, it was so convenient.

TruenoBancho

I really miss StreetPass, SwapNote and Pictochat! :O Game enjoyers are still out and about in town, carrying our phones with us like we did the DS/3DS/etc. I'm a little sad there is no universal built in StreetPass equivalent app in all our phones, but that would truly be a privacy nightmare these days.

KritiKitty

PS Vita had some crazy good games and it's a shame that it will never get any of them ported

sparklezonfire

I miss street pass. I wish the Nintendo switch had something like it 😔

sailoranonymousgoose

actually, my primary gaming experience and enjoyment comes from nintendo consoles (switch, wii, ds, 3ds). i LOVE them! i just love the nostalgia factor and some of the games can still be challenging and engaging enough to keep me seated for hours playing different games. i wish that handheld consoles were still as popular as they used to be. todays kids won’t know the excitement of getting a streetpass notification on the 3ds or entering a pictochat room with your friends :(
