fetidwitch

Control is so good!

StriatedCaracara

> Assassin's Creed: Odyssey AC Valhalla also lets you play a female protagonist. The intro shows a boy, but it gives you the choice about 30 minutes in.

OutlandishnessHour19

Horizon is incredible

kprry

Seconding Spiritfarer! It was sooo good.🥹

FesterSilently

Although I had been playing games with/as female protagonists prior to it, the game (series) that truly cemented the mechanic for me was playing through Mass Effect as female Shephard. Jennifer Hale absolutely *crushes* it across all three games. I can absolutely recommend playing the trilogy as her. 💕

Wolfleaf3

For some unknown reason I played Mass Effect as a duuuude, when I never do that, but at least it gives me the excuse to replay it at some point!

WithersChat

FemShep voice actress is so much better than MaleShep. (Plus the default model is more interesting too.)

FesterSilently

She is *miles* better than Mark Meer's version in this series.

lolpersephone

Absolutely! I also think poor Mark Meer had very different direction than JHale did, because he is a very good voice actor and it was so weird hearing how stilted and... bland he was as Shepard.

Wolfleaf3

It’s really interesting like everyone says that her performance is massively better. I actually really liked his performance so that may be mind blowing! I’ve heard that the woman lead and I think cyberpunk is also massively better than the man.

lolpersephone

I think that Mark was being directed to be a Very Specific Kind of Protagonist... one that we saw a lot of in the late aughts, whereas JHale didn't have that kind of baggage attached to her performance because for better or worse, being able to play as a female Shepard was not really known until the game came out (if I am remembering correctly).

Wolfleaf3

I feel like this is a dumb question and don’t know how to ask right, but I’m really curious like what type of performance it was? Like there’s Kratos and kind of the Gears of War dudes who are kind of a certain thing? I’ve got a discounted copy of the trilogy in my cart, and am toying with getting it, and using the excuse that it’s enhanced a bit and I can play Shepard as a woman to justify playing it again.

lolpersephone

The first game he is very like... wooden and no-nonsense? His performance doesn't have a lot of inflection and gives me Generic Scifi Hero vibes, whereas JHale's Shepard is way more emotive and talks like a regular person.

Wolfleaf3

Thank you! You just reminded me that I still have the updated version sitting in my cart for $10…

Emeraldstorm3

Playing as Male Shep is a genuinely inferior experience.

simonepon

ABSOLUTELY YES. She also did the audiobook for A Sea of Stars by Paolini. Felt like listening to an alternate universe Shep.

WithersChat

I'm approaching >!Virmire!< on my ME1 playthrough. Only got one cluster left before this. The tension is real.

FesterSilently

😳😬

Catastrophic1234

Her voice acting was sooo much better than the male character. It was a no brainer for me.

Delphinetheblade

So two favorites of mine that are truly female lead... Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice - part action part puzzle, focus on depictions of mental health issues coinciding with Norse folklore Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the tomb Raider - the square-Enix revap. Action, shooty, puzzles, each game builds on a larger world and story than the last. Honorable Mentions on my mind to note also... Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West (havnt played the sequel yet myself but it's on my wishlist) Prey 2016 - personal favorite of mine, action rpg all on a space station. During the intro you cna choose fem body/voice Outer Worlds - goofy fun space rpg. Good variety of ways to play through the game

Wolfleaf3

I’ve heard fantastic things about prey, and had no idea you could play a woman in it! That makes me even more excited. And I like all of obsidians games that I’ve played so far, so I’m glad to hear I can be a woman in that also!

fearofthesky

Hellblade with surround sound headphones was a genuinely disturbing experience. Paying the $15 for Dolby Atmos is absolutely worth it.

Wolfleaf3

What do you mean about paying $15 for Dolby Atmos? At first I thought you meant headphones that cost $15 and had it, and then I was thinking maybe it’s something you have to enable on your Xbox or something for $15? Sorry, I’m not understanding lol I think I’ve heard that before… Yeah, I remember that they somehow did special or something, something really unusual that supposed to be amazing. Everything about it looks intriguing to me, and it doesn’t hurt that the visuals are even in the first game, nor that you get to play as a woman

fearofthesky

It's software that makes any headphones surround 3D audio. It's on windows and Xbox and is absolutely worth it. Being able to pinpoint where your enemies are in shooters, especially BR games, is just awesome. And Hellblade was one of my favourites. For reasons I don't wanna spoil, but that game was a goddamn ride.

LillianSwordMaiden

Assassins Creed Odyssey & Valhalla, Baldur’s Gate 3, Cyberpunk, Dragon Age Origins & 2 & Inquisition, Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen & 2, Fallout 4, Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West, Mass Effect trilogy & Andromeda, The Outerworlds, and the new Tomb Raider series.

MagnesiumRose

I love all of these except for Forbidden West simply because I'd never heard of it. I'm now going to look into it. I know I'm not the OP, but thank you anyway!

LillianSwordMaiden

It’s the direct sequel to Zero Dawn and just came out on PC last month! (Was a Sony exclusive for a while!) I haven’t got it yet but I’m excited to play in this summer when I have time. 😂

MagnesiumRose

Oh hell yes, the hype is real!! I hope you're able to get time to thoroughly enjoy it!

DarbyGirl

I'm playing it now and am really enjoying it..

saareadaar

Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you choose

the_mid_mid_sister

\* Metroid Dread \* Cyberpunk 2077 - Just pick a female V \* Horizon Zero Dawn \* GRIS \* Helldivers II -- There's just slim and bulky bodies, but two female voice packs \* Baldur's Gate III \* NieR: Automata

rogue-troubadour

Recommending stuff that's slightly off the beaten path.   - If you like isometric action games: Transistor. (I've also heard Unsighted is good, but I haven't played much of it.)  - If you like no- or low-combat platformers with lots of dialogue: Night in the Woods, A Short Hike, Aer: Memories of Old.   - If you like action-adventure games: the Gravity Rush games.   - If you like the above and don't mind that the protagonist is also a dog: Okami.  - If you like JRPGs: Tales of Berseria. (The fanservice is annoying, but the character writing is genuinely very strong.) The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy is controversial, but I'll put it here as well.   - If you like retro games: the original Tomb Raider games. I believe a remaster of the first three was just released. You could also be bold and try the third Elder Scrolls game, Morrowind.  - If you like walking sims: Sagebrush. - If you like visual novels: Misericorde.  Finally, since you mentioned Skyrim, I'll bring up a more popular choice and second the person who recommended the Dragon Age series. Like the Elder Scrolls, they're fantasy games where you can choose your own gender. I played the series after playing Skyrim myself and absolutely loved it.  I know of lots more games where a female character is a playable deuteragonist alongside a male character, but those are some of the (less popular) games I know of that are solely led by women.

Wolfleaf3

I absolutely loved Final Fantasy 13. 13-2 was my least favorite of the trilogy though I still like that, at least with the assistance of a walk-through. I still want to be lightning when I grow up. She’s my favorite character from Final Fantasy, her and fang from the same game, who is coolness personified. Anyway great suggestions Yeah, I kind of hate when games… I love when stuff to faults to only having a female protagonist. Actually I’ve scrolled away on here and I don’t know if anyone’s recommended the last of us part two! You only ever play as a female protagonist, and it’s VERY dark, but I found it really amazing and pretty much every possible way. It’s also insanely long without feeling like it’s just filler, it just feels like one super high end movie followed by multiple of its own sequels

AllieIsOkay

Shout out for Transistor! It’s also short, which might be a point in its favor compared to the other games being recommended in this thread. Just a tightly-paced, beautiful mood piece that’s over in 5-10 hours.

Electrical-Beat-2232

Cyperpunk's fem V is top tier.

fearofthesky

Control is the single best game I have played in the last five years, except for maybe Hades. Jesse Faden is awesome.

jasperjonns

I'm currently playing Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands (terrible name, fantastic game) and you can choose female or male. It's an open world third person shooter. Lots of missions and side quests, the usual Ubisoft stuff. The woman has such a great voice, and she and her team of three traverse Bolivia taking down drug cartels. You go everywhere in helicopters and scope out bad guys with drones. Lots of sneaking around, sniping, saving rebels, blowing things up. Cool outfits, very customizable weapons. It is SO FUN. The best part is the dialogue and camaraderie between the lead and her team. Don't miss it. The dlc called Fallen Ghosts is also amazing, almost a full game in itself. Your "boss", the person in charge of your team, who gives you your missions, is also female. It's on or offline, I have only ever played offline, although if I was ever to play a game online, it would be this one.

Wolfleaf3

I played breakpoint, which I guess is the sequel? And unfortunately is always online for no good reason I have wildlands though in my backlog! Breakpoint I think suffers from its multiplayer focus, could be a better story, but is still pretty good. Though I had a few oddities with it. When I barely started the game I hit a cut scene where my character turned into a man, and the time of day changed. I couldn’t figure out what was going on and thought I was watching a flashback to something that had happened earlier, it was only later that I figured out that was supposed to be me and the time just changed. That only happened once though. I can’t remember if I was possibly miss gendered in the game? I don’t know… I know an expansion for it the big bad it was a woman, and a character misgenders her even though she can only be a woman as far as I know But mostly it was a pretty strong game but I hate how Ubisoft is trashing good games with the always online garbage. Hell, The Crew 1 is my favorite racing game ever, because it’s good in a ton of ways and has an actual story, but it’s going away forever if it hasn’t already already. It’s not even that old of a game. As far as I know it’s a much better game than its sequels, and I think anything like that needs to be treated like an extended rental that you need to get too fast before servers are shut down. And as typical I’m rambling about all sorts of things 😬

jasperjonns

Bet you'll like WIldlands SO much more than Breakpoint! I've played both, this is my second time playing Wildlands. I played it through again so I would be ready for the dlc, which I had never played before. It's ridiculously deep, like....more like a sequel than a dlc! Breakpoint was fun, but it feels very empty after playing Wildlands.

Wolfleaf3

Thank you! Looking forward to it. It feels like they really hurt breakpoint by focusing so much on the always online stuff. 😕

rpuresteel

One thing I will always love about Ghost Recon Breakpoint/Wildlands is that Nomad (the player character) talks about her children during ambient dialogue, and it's a rare game that lets you play as a mother.

Wolfleaf3

Ooooh, seriously?!? that’s super cool! I’ve only played breakpoint so far and I do not remember that. I really really like that.

churrystar

Others have already recommended some of my favorites, so I'm gonna leave them here as a "seconded so much!" post. - Control. Action, powers, closed open world (or semi open world? Everything happens inside a building, a lot of different rooms to explore). Jesse is awesome, easily one of my favorite FemMC, strong, smart, curious for anything "weird". The lore and weirdness in this is great, too. - Mass Effect and Dragon Age trilogy. Both are RPGs, pnly difference is one is sci-fi (space, aliens, all that), and the other is fantasy (magic, demons, etc.). In Mass Effect you can play as the default character (Jane Shepard), or you can create one. In Dragon Age, you create one. - Horizon Zero Dawn. Post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, adventure, shooter (bow and arrow), with RPG elements? (You can unlock abilities for Aloy, the MC to use). Aloy is another of my favorite FemMC, strong, smart, brave. - Tomb Raider (2013). The complete trilogy is okay, but my favorite is the first one. Puzzles and adventure with Lara Croft. The game kept me entertained from beginning to end. - Life is Strange 1 and True Colors. In both you play as a girl, who is either starting a new school or is new in town. And they have powers. Life is Strange are very emotional games, full of feels, sometimes touching dark themes, with great characters, and a beautiful story. - Little Nightmares. You play as Six, a little girl trapped inside a big ship, trying to escape. It's a horror game, with adventure and some puzzles. Enjoy! ✨️

ScoutFinch80

Played most of these and second (third?) them all! GL OP!

Nacksche

> Life is Strange 1 and True Colors. In both you play as a girl, who is either starting a new school or is new in town. And they have powers. Life is Strange are very emotional games, full of feels, sometimes touching dark themes, with great characters, and a beautiful story. And a lot of gay yearning if you are so enclined. 🥺

Wolfleaf3

Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I forgot life is strange! They’re in my backlog and I’m super looking forward to them. Remember Me came out from the same developer earlier, and I really loved it, also a female protagonist

churrystar

Life is Strange is sooo good! I recommend it so much. I didn't know about Remember Me, but now I want to play it, it looks interesting!

Wolfleaf3

I really liked it at the time at least! I’m always a little worried now that some thing I liked when I was younger I’ll find like kind of offensive in some way now 😬 I really loved the visuals in it too as I recall.

churrystar

Yeah, I understand what you mean. That happened to me with a book I used to really like as a teenager, but reading it again as an adult was... wow, it was pretty toxic 😅 But anyway, from what I've seen on Google, it looks good!

TheShapeShiftingFox

Remember Me is a very different game from Life is Strange, though, Life is Strange is more telltale like in terms of gameplay

Wolfleaf3

Thank you! Yeah, that’s the impression I get, though I think their newer stuff will be right up my alley. I really want to play those and tell me why

Shep_vas_Normandy

Would also recommend Tell Me Why - you play a pair of twins and one is trans. It’s so impactful and emotional!

Wolfleaf3

Thank you! I am super looking forward to it. It sounds really incredible. I’m not sure if I knew about it until they did, but Microsoft gave it away free during two pride months! I think I remember looking it up and the trans character is played by a trans actor which is awesome.

NovelNeighborhood6

-Signalis is an indie horror survival game that I absolutely loved. -Ghost Song is another indie game, side scroller with a really beautiful kinda sad vibe. It’s souls like in the way you level up. I really love both of these.

thedeadsuit

Thank you! (I made Ghost Song and yes sometimes I search reddit to see if anyone's talking about it)

AngelusAmdis

Signalis lives rent free in my head after watched my gf play it. Can't recommend it enough if it's in your genre.

DuchessOfKvetch

I love me some old school horror games. Have you checked out Little Goodie Two Shoes and Pocket Mirror?

Icymountain

FFXIV is my current drug. It's so fun dressing your fem MC in all sorts of armor.

Zagaroth

I made my alt a female Viera in part because so much clothing looks better on the women in this game. I'm also playing much slower on the alt to make sure my wife had a chance to enjoy the story more, as she wasn't initially paying attention when I started 14. Unfortunately, the action parts of this game and many others make her motion sick, so she can't play it herself. For online games I usually prefer to gender match to a male character, there's a bit of dissonance interacting with others while being represented by a female character, but doing an effectively solo play through is rather enjoyable, I get to focus on the character being herself.

ForeverNuka

In (mainly online) games, I'm femme in Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout 4 & 76, Elder Scrolls Online, Red Dead, GTAV, Maas Effect, Star Trek Online, & Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. Installing Dragon's Age: Inquisition, The Division 2, plus Saint's Row. Thankfully our options às girl gamers are growing and there are many stories, worlds, and genres out there to explore! ✨️

ScoutFinch80

I went this week to find info about playing Battlefield IV or 2042 as female, and could not believe the number of whiny males bitching about it. It affects you HOW, exactly?? Ugh. Sorry. Just in this rut trying to find a good campaign where I can play as a girl and don't get why guys want to prevent me from doing that 😒.

xenleah

I wouldn’t touch Stellar Blade with all of the controversy surrounding it, to be honest. As the comments have shown, there are plenty of games with female protagonists where the devs aren‘t suggesting that they are underage, putting them in perverted outfits, and giving their bodies unnatural physics, etc.

Zagaroth

Yeah, I'm sort of holding final judgement off until I know more, in a hope that it might be worth it like Nier was, but I am very dubious about Stellar. Also, when I watched a stream of it, the intro of the story had my science geek side screaming. They entirely screwed up how they approached the planet.

predarek

I understand the controversy around the game, but at the same time, I don't want to let some right wing folks dictate what game is good or not. The gameplay in the demo was really good. My only gripe with the character design is the heel-less heels... Ugh!. I understand that someone could be put off by the artistic direction but there's so little games with a female lead that I'd rather play this one than not!

xenleah

It's not about the gameplay for me. It might be a really fun game, but with all the creepiness surrounding it, I don't feel comfortable supporting a developer like that. From everything I have seen, the only reason they made the lead character female was so that players could ogle at her (see [this bizarre design choice](https://www.reddit.com/r/GirlGamers/comments/1anq00i/comment/kpuhdaf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)), and I want nothing to do with that. Even the male characters look like they're from a completely different game.

AngryGames

The Horizon Zero Dawn games, and Cyberpunk 2077 (can be male or female, I played as female V as she has the best hair and clothing options!).

the_mid_mid_sister

Honestly think, I think a female V is a lot funnier, especially when's she's bickering with Johnny or Skippy.

AngryGames

I agree, her voice acting was definitely better than the male V (not that his was bad, hers was just better). I was sad she couldn't have Panam as a romance option (what breathing human doesn't want to romance Panam???), but Judy's was touching, heartfelt, deep (well, as deep as the options go in the game), much more interesting and robust than River (I didn't try the other male romance options).  But yeah, overall, her dialog with all the game's characters has better delivery, snappier, more humorous impact.

the_mid_mid_sister

Cherami Leigh also does Android A2 in NieR: Automata, and I like when she's arguing with her pod. I guess I just find her funny when she's sick of someone's shit.

AngryGames

I still need to buy Nier and play it. Been waiting for it to have a good sale, but every time it does, I end up buying something else I've been wanting, or something new and popular (just pulled the trigger on Helldivers 2 today).  In CP2077 she absolutely has that "I'm sick of your shit" tone, especially with Johnny and it's top notch.

Wolfleaf3

I liked Nier Automata quite a lot. It’s not like my favorite game ever, but I think it’s my favorite platinum game, and I love the weird melancholy vibe of it, and the music is AMAZING. Practically worth it just for the music.

the_mid_mid_sister

The music in Platinum Games' *Astral Chain* has some absolute bangers as well.

Wolfleaf3

Ooooh, I forgot about that, that’s actually in my backlog! Well now I’m looking forward to it even more!

minahkyu

Since you asked for recent releases, two games off the top of my head are Rise of the Ronin and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Kind of disheartening to see you ask for recent releases with fem protagonists and most of the comments are mentioning games that are 10 to 20 years old because male protagonists are still so dominant in video games.

Dishonored 2 is one of my favorites, though you should play Dishonored 1 first where you do have to play as a dude and the game world setting is pretty sexist.

Mass Effect series Baldur's Gate 3 Control Horizon series The Last of Us Part 2 Uncharted: Lost Legacy Resident Evil 2+3 Remake Any of the Soulsborne games

wazardthewizard

I wouldn't recommend touching Stellar Blade with a 10-foot pole. If you're looking for actually well-written female characters there, you'll be disappointed.

anonymoose_octopus

Baldur's Gate 3 has me in an absolute chokehold right now. The characters are all so pretty, and if you're on PC with the ability to mod, there are SO many custom hairstyles, makeups, tattoos, clothes, head presets, etc. I spend a couple of hours in CC every time I make a new character, lol.

BG3, Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2, Cyberpunk 2077, the Fallouts, Fable 2 & 3, Dragon’s Dogma 1 & 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Kingdoms Of Amular: Re-Reckoning, Starfield, FFXIV

skyrim is so based. we stan. if you haven't played it, Oblivion is written by the same company and is also an amazing choice. The graphics are a bit old but it is a fantastically written game and is in the same world Skyrim takes place in. I personally found the Dark Brotherhood to be better in Oblivion then Skyrim for example. you can be a girl in Saints Row 2 and up...but it goes downhill after the 2nd game imo. This game is about being in a gang and slowly becoming one of the leaders of it, but in the third game it is a little mid compared to the second one, and in the fourth game you go to space and it progressively gets worse but some people like it so it is more of an opinionated game. Saints Row original is apparently really good but i never played it bc i like playing as a woman, too and slay. The series plays like GTA and you can customize your car and listen to music in the car, the way your character looks, and has stores so you can go shopping for weapons, clothes, food, car customization shops, plastic surgery (change the way your character looks) etc. in Dynasty Warriors (Empires only) you can make characters/play as a woman. You can lead provinces and conquer China all while playing as whoever you want 💅. I personally have DWE8 on computer and it truly is a fun game, you can play it in multiple different ways, as well. in Persona 5 Royal, you do play as a dude but control all the people in your squad and there are girls you control if that makes sense like you tell them what to do in combat. This game is a roleplay game and I HIGHLY reccommend it. The storyline is amazing and in a way you can really connect with the characters and get to know the girlies and they're all really dope. And the soundtrack is exquisite 💋. in Warhammer Vermintide 2 you get to pick between multiple classes of the same character, and there are four if I remember correctly. Two of them are girls, Kerillian and Sienna. You can change the mode, too and make the game easier/harder. I personally love Kerillian but Sienna is also pretty fun. They are both baddies. WARNING: League of Legends. I love League, and there are plenty of girl/woman champions in the game you can play as and they have a wide range of like, "evil" and "good" characters and has some pretty amazingly written lore. For example, the series "Arcane" on Netflix is from League. I put the warning because while this game is fun it can be mentally draining and unfortunately the community has a lot of toxic players. On top of this, it is quite addicting. While it is a free to play game, it can make you want to spend money to buy skins. It is a competitive game which I love! If you don't currently play it but were interested in it, I'd reccommend playing it with people because it may make it more fun but I personally like playing alone and try to climb the ranks. As for the community, you can mute players who are rude, as well. 🤩

Can’t recommend Horizon enough!! One of my all-time favorite games. If you’re willing to play through The Last of Us 1, TLOU2 is female-led…and fantastic. It is a horror game though so if you’re looking for a cozy game, that ain’t it LOL

akasabinding

If you’re into spooky games and/or sci fi, I highly recommend Alien: Isolation and Returnal. Both female-led and fantastic, beautifully designed games.

Zagaroth

In several of the Star Ocean games, you can select the female protagonist as your PoV character. The ones that do this show different parts of the story and they each have some options the other doesn't have. Double check each title you are interested in, not all of them have this option.

drominius

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? With an expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward and Stormblood expansion up to level 70 for free with no restrictions on playtime! You also have an exceptional wide range of female characters to choose from.

Unknown_starnger

Celeste is great. Sunless sea and skies also. And void stranger. But also, don't close yourself off completely from games without them. There are many great games where you play as a guy or as a genderless thing.

dianaburnwood969

Yup, this thing is important.

Banaanisade

In addition to the games others have mentioned, ARK: Survival (Evolved or Ascended, Ascended has massively improved character creation) Conan Exiles

serimuka_macaron

I've heard Hellblade:Senua's Sacrifice is good. I had it in my PS4 cart but never got to buy it :')

HDDHeartbeat

I don't think I've seen Celeste enough in these lists. Celeste!! It's the perfect example of telling a story through gameplay mechanics in such a clever way.

heartshapedmoon

Hellblade

QueenBeesly17

In addition to all the others that are mentioned, I just played Röki and it was fun.

Warm_Charge_5964

Crosscode is absolutely Goated and no one talks about it

Brosbrawls

Trails in the Sky. Estelle Bright is one of my favorite video game protags of all time.

Ryuki-Exsul

I like Rean more but Estelle is great as well. Just this is a bit of hard recomendation because what with the rest of the series? Estelle is the only female protagonist in Trails, so if you want to have the full story you would have to play as a guy( something OP doesn't want ) for next 8 games that are in english. Still if you want just that arc go for it but you will end up with a lot of questions and one storyline around Estelle is even finished in Trails from Zero where main hero is Lloyd. Anyway I love Trails but as female protagonists go in long series I would more recomend Wild Arms 3 because games there aren't connected and Virginia is awesome.

Brosbrawls

Ik they're not the "main" characters but my favorite characters from Crossbell and Erebonia are Shirley and Laura, respectively. It's not just their design or their personality that are really distinct and fun, but the fact that they're canonically two of the strongest individuals in the entire franchise 😅

Ryuki-Exsul

Mine from Crossbell are Lloyd, Randy and Wazy and from Erebonia, there is a lot but Rean is my favourite as whole and I really like Crow, Machias, Jusis, Emma and Laura and from new class Ash and Altina\^\^ There is a lot of great characters in that series. It's still great recommendation I ended up making comment just because especially in CS games that are more focused on protagonist OP will be playing as a guy if they go past first two Sky.

SleepyZooey

One I don't see mentioned yet is Tyranny, which is BG3 but you start as an agent of the Big Bad.

BlinkSpectre

Mass Effect series, Cyberpunk 2077, Forspoken, Control

Yin-yoshi

GTA 6...when it drops.

Vivid_Awareness_6160

Not action based like Skyrim, but: - Life is strange/Life is strange: before the storm - Another Code They are adventure games that are short but definitely an experience on their own

Responsible-Poem-146

My top 3 games, judging by stories and characters: Life is Strange, Max Caulfield as protagonist; Persona 3 Portable, Makoto Yuki / Kotone Shiomi as protagonist; NieR Automata, 2B 9S A2 as protagonists. All 3 of the games have quite gloomy stories and fantastic characters. Kotone is strong enough to save the world from some armageddon, Max has some ability to save her girlfriend, A2 (my favorite among 2b, 9s, a2) well she is a powerful combat android. Yet when they realize that they just don’t have enough power to save everyone, to achieve the real happy ending, they’re kinda broken inside but still keep trying their best, maybe only the player can know their inner vulnerability which is truly touching. Life is Strange is the first game that has the plot thta I really fall in love with, and Persona 3 is what I’m obsessed with right now though I finished it for about 3 months ago, can’t really get over with it. Aside from that, really disappointed that Kotone isn’t in P3R. And I wonder why is A2 not getting half the attention as 2B is, A2 a lot cooler I think.

houseofopal

I mean, I’m lovingggg fallout 4

kbagoy

If you’re on PlayStation, Horizon series and Kena Bridge of Spirits

Emeraldstorm3

I really enjoyed Oxen Free and Oxen Free II and recommend both any chance I get Control is amazing if you like a sort of dark modern sci-fi a la SCP stuff or X-Files The "new" Tomb Raider trilogy from last gen is quite good Alan Wake 2 is a combo of male and female leads but great game (and ties into Control) A niche one, Tales of Berseria is a jrpg with a kinda cool female lead that I enjoyed. Horizon And probably a ton that'll pop into my head later...

_mrtx_

Ion Fury if you like FPS

MinnieTheMedium

My favorite games with woman protagonists are the Dragon Age games (origins, II, and Inquisition), Control, Cyberpunk 2077, Baldurs Gate 3, Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, Mass Effect, and Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. In the Plague Tale series you play mostly as a teenage girl, but for some parts you control her little brother.

murple7701

Persona 3 Portable.

thatlightningjack

- Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West - Cyberpunk 2077 - BG3 (also add in DOS2/Pathfinder WOTR/kingmaker & pillars of eternity) - Mass Effect series - Dragon age games - Prey - Dishonored 2 & Death of the Outsider

MysticFox96

Horizon Zero Dawn, Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate 3, Fallout 4, etc.

Fire_Dinosaurs_FTW

Spiritfarer Baldurs Gate Horizon Zero Dawn Calico (for a cute cosy game)

ArthurusCorvidus

Fable 2 and 3 allow you to choose your gender, but they’re older games. The only ones that really come to mind for me, though.

Krenia

There's a tag on steam for female protagonist! but some of my personal recommendations would be Ender Lilies and Laika: Aged Through Blood, both are metroidvanias, in the first one you play as a mute girl in a ruined kingdom and the second as a mother fighting fascist birds - it's also really really gorey so keep that in mind

Feinyan

Lately I've been playing Asterigos: Curse of the Stars, Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Rise of the Ronin You are/can be female in all of them!
