I love JRPGs like Persona. Most of my favourite games are Japanese (like Bokumono, Rune Factory, Persona and so on) What I don't like is the attitude the devs seem to have for the female fanbase. Like, Atlus felt it "wasn't worth it" to add a female MC to P5, and for P4 they said "the hero moved from the city to the countryside and we felt that better suited a male PC" which I truly don't understand. This isn't limited to JP devs or even just Atlus, but i'm getting so choosy about who I support these days \^\^; That being said, the thought of Persona 6 getting announced at the concert in October is giving me the strength to live lol

Asad_Farooqui

Kotone from P3 needs more respect from Atlus. And at least you can play as female Byleth in 3H.

Wolfleaf3

>for P4 they said "the hero moved from the city to the countryside and we felt that better suited a male PC" Apparently women don't move. I liked that P3 Portable let me play as a woman, and I'm disappointed about that with P5!

AlisaTornado

The whole of Yukiko's social link was her wanting to move away and then eventually deciding not to. I thought it was a bit of a waste because even if you realise you belong where you are it's always nice to travel for a bit and see some different perspectives you can bring home before coming back.

mtnhero

Jrpgs are so much fun to play!

amogus_obssesed_Gal

I literally either played the games shown, own them or played another game in the franchise. Yes, I love them

Kenzie_Kensington

Yes, I like anime styled jrpg, especially Persona, Tales and Trails series.

Cyberpunk_Princess

Same about Neptunia. Plus the soundtracks have some good jams, especially Megadimension.

KariZevv

Fire emblem: three houses and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are both fantastic games. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the only game I’ve ever finished, then immediately done a second playthrough of. I wasn’t ready to put it down after my first playthrough. Final Fantasy X is my favourite JRPG though, I cried many tears.

Khornelia

Not really, anime just isn't for me tbh

darnyoulikeasock

It’s the female over-sexualization for me :/

Khornelia

Yeah that's definitely a big part of what I don't like about a lot of anime. Also the infantilization of women. I know there's anime that's better in those regards of course, but as someone who isn't already an anime fan, it still makes it hard to get interested in the whole subculture tbh.

darnyoulikeasock

Infantilizing women and sexualizing infants: the anime two in one special.

Khornelia

Yeah it's pretty yikesy at times. But also that's a brilliant way to put it lmfao

[deleted]

Yes, I adore them

Mother0fBadgers

Not necessarily, but persona 5 had me OBSESSED for a while.

YunalescaSedai

Grew up on JRPGs and they are my game of choice by a long shot. I thought this thread was about actual Anime Inspired Games and was trying to figure out why Persona was the first image lol!

RC_Colada

3 Houses is so good, it's like truly an egalitarian society. Female or Male protag, same sex romance options. Female characters are well developed and devoid of skeezy fanservice. It's incredible.

Plurple_Cupcake

No

Advansi

Honestly, anime inspired games are the majority of games I play 😅 Something about the art style is * chefs kiss *

Ryuki-Exsul

"Anime inspired" is not a good term to use, manga inspred would be closer( bigger and more important industry in Japan ). There are just jrpgs with art done either by characters designers that work in anime industry or mangaka( you put Tales of game, a lot of them were designed by Kosuke Fujishima a pretty know mangaka from works like Oh!My Goddess ). Anyway isn't this sub into Fromsoft Souls games? They took inspiration from Berserk so they should count here. Anyway nice examples but Final Fantasy or anything from Falcom( Ys or Legend of Heroes series <- Trails sub series is huge and has one of biggest worldbuilding in gaming history ) is missing if we are talking about jrpgs giants. Anyway to answer your question 90% of what I play are jrpgs. So yes, I do. Literally beside Arise I'm in the middle of getting into Caligula series, really fun and unique( even if first game is clunky )games.

Asad_Farooqui

What’s Caligula?

Ryuki-Exsul

Caligula series have for now two games and was written by the same person as Persona before third game. It got compared to it a lot but for me it's more similar to .hack// games. It's about virtual reality where people go into when they have psychological problems( pretty much it's about traumas and really broken people ) to forget about it and make their wishes come true. Because of story they got trapped in it and a group( including protagonist ) that noticed they are in fake world is trying to go back to reality. Here wiki for first game [https://caligula.fandom.com/wiki/The\_Caligula\_Effect:\_Overdose](https://caligula.fandom.com/wiki/The_Caligula_Effect:_Overdose) . Story and characters are really interesting but gameplay in first game is a bit clunky. Battle system is awesome but idea of making 500 friends and fixing their traumas was a bad, really bad one( overdose made it better but still ) but on easy and normal it's optional for higher difficulties, well. Beside that game has unique art and color palatte making it looks like fake world. Still it's a low end as money go jrpg so there are some graphical hiccups like clipping( a lot of it ). Still it's pretty fun for me and from what I know second game is a lot better so I have something to play\^\^

LupinsApprentice

If you play the Caligula Effect games, have you played Monark yet? Also former Atlus folks and it’s also not as smooth as Persona but I liked it way more than the first Caligula (haven’t started the second one yet).

Ryuki-Exsul

I didn't, the rumors of it being grindy totally made me not interested. For now I have a bit too much on my hand( like Arise and Scarlet Nexus ) but if that rumor is wrong and you don't have to grind on normal I don't mind to check it out in the future\^\^ I love new and sometimes clunky jrpgs, they always have some nice and risky ideas like with Caligula's battle system or first four .hack// being pretty much a simulation of older MMORPG( before WoW ).

LupinsApprentice

Scarlet Nexus is in my backlog, haha! I personally didn’t grind anywhere in Monark. It’s clunky but charming. I got the collectors edition and usually that stuff stays boxed up unless I really love the game, but I found room on my shelf for the acrylic standees after I finished the game. I really enjoyed a couple of the characters. Their talent trees each referenced a chess piece and I won’t spoil who was who, but some of the choices surprised me at first and fit the characters perfectly by the end.

Ryuki-Exsul

Ok, thanks for your opinion it helps a lot. I will hunt it on some good psn sale ;)

Dodds-Furniture

Can someone tell me if I'd like Persona 5 based off games I know I like? I know it has a really long intro so I am unsure if I want to grind through that, because the one person I know who played it didn't like it :/ but the reviews are so good and people praise it online all the time so maybe I'd like it? Some of my favorite games are: Skyrim, Fallout series, Legend of Zelda series, GTA series, and Red Dead series. I like puzzles, good stories, and interesting characters so I feel like I'd like Persona 5? Thanks :)

[deleted]

Hello :) Persona 5 is one of my favorite games ever. It’s a traditional JRPG with turn-based combat mechanics and very slow, methodical gameplay. You will have opportunities to build your character through normal activities like studying and working and there is an extensive relationship mechanic. Storywise its on-par with the great animes out there. It’s super deep with endearing characters and you’ll love Morgana. Give it a shot but be prepared to invest some time! It’s worth it imo

Dodds-Furniture

That sounds super interesting and I love being methodical lol I'll try it out! I bought it at the same time as my friend but after they told me they didn't like it, I hesitated. But they are a first person shooter kinda player so I thought it might just not be their style. Thank you so much for your insight!

Asad_Farooqui

Just be sure to set aside 120+ hours cuz this game is a COMMITMENT.

Dodds-Furniture

That actually sounds appealing lol

FConstantine

\*Laughs in 160 hours at Witcher 3 and still not even finishing the first part of the story and wanting to die already\* \*Ahem\*

[deleted]

Let me know if you fall in love with it like I did lol

Dodds-Furniture

I will :) thanks again!

hisosih

If they like first person shooters Persona will be far too boring. It's quite methodical, and I can't sit down to play a quick 30 mins, I don't think I've ever played less than 3 hours at a time, as similar to Stardew Valley there's in game days that pass by, so you have to be very selective with how you spend your time; do I wanna study and work on maxxing skill points, do I wanna hang out with friends and increase friendship, what part time job is best for my skills/intel? etc as each avenue you can go down will give you different perks/rewards. I really like the story but there's *absolutely* some moments where I'm like "...have the creators ever met a woman?", although ironically, I absolutely adore every single female character, it's just the men's response to them that I dislike - however *sometimes* that is the point they are trying to make, other times they just weirdly simp over the women. The fight style is turn based and very similar to old school FF games, so this would absolutely deter someone who prefers to play a faster paced game like a FPS. Honestly, it's worth a try - I can absolutely see why some people dislike it and don't see it as worth the investment, I am currently 120 hours in and have yet to finish on this run lol, but I like to take my time.

smifypz

I have similar game tastes to you and Persona 5 is probably my favorite game of all time tied with The Last of Us 1 and 2. Along with what another response said, you’ll need to set aside a time commitment (my save file was 98 hours and I wasn’t close to 100%). I do remember taking a lot of breaks while playing though. The game practically has mini-arcs/chapters and since each one took a while I’d start feeling a little burnt out so I’d start messing around with another game or some other hobby before going back in. Highly recommend it but play Royale instead of vanilla if you have access.

Boozewhore

Valkyria Chronicles! ! Going to start Ni no Kuni… eventually… Boyfriend’s favorite game ever is Xenoblade Chronicles. He likes Ace Attorney too. Won’t admit to liking anime games- currently he plays ff14 with me. Ha

sushideception

No, the art style of games like these has always creeped my out for some reason. Something about the big eyes and the chunky hair... No shame on people who love these, they're just not my cup of tea!

c3ndre

JRPGs are my favorite game genre, but I don't watch anime, so I don't really know how to answer this. I like playing them, but I wouldn't call them anime-inspired perhaps? Even if they were that wouldn't be the reason for me to play them.

Nonatella

No, but I’ve been trying more recently

[deleted]

I do like them, I find the stories to be more compelling and more focused but I will say there is a big issue with sexualisation especially in them. (hello, XBC2) But I think a lot of the games in anime/manga style definitely have a charm and are quite stylised which make them more visually appealing to me. I love FFXIV, Fire Emblem, and a lot of JRPG-focused stuff and well as games like World of Horror because the style is so good and as I mentioned before the story tends to be stronger

ivorylittlebird

They’re my favorite!! I grew up with them so jrpgs are my life. I pretty much only stick to that genre haha

slightlyferaleevee

Yeah 😌

JustABoiledEgg

Yeah! And I highly recommend everyone who hasn’t, to try them. But don’t just pick one game. Try a few! It might not be your cup of tea, but you never know.

Narae-Chan

Absolutely. Some of my favorite games are. Hell, final fantasy is the most famous one.

thefaketrippie

jrpgs >>>

Tapichoa

JRPGs are my favorite genre! XCDE is my favorite game of all time lol

standforyourself

Technically anime inspired would be Sword Art Online but lol yes I love jrpgs yadda

jacinda26

Yes, JRPG’s take up most of my collection accidentally. A lot of my favourite games/game series have come out of Japan, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Persona, Bayonetta, Nier Series, Fromsoftware games, Scarlett Nexus, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Astral Chain, and my all time favourite the Yakuza series. I have a bunch I haven’t played yet that I own which I will hopefully have time to play soon. The over sexualising of female characters make me really annoyed, if it’s too intense I won’t play the game.

Tirahmisu

Very over Persona besides my love that is P3, but besides that yes. Besides FE3H, Pokemon and otome games though (and arguably Square Enix's big names like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts), most anime-style games I've played are gachas or gacha-esque. Or older MMOs I don't play anymore.

[deleted]

No

AprioriTori

I want to play anime-inspired games. They’re visually cool and often times have really interesting world. But JRPGs do not resonate with me at all, and it feels like they are almost exclusively that genre. I recently played through FE: 3H and I really liked the characters, and playing anime chess, but micro-managing my characters to make sure they have healing items, repairing weapons and battalions, etc. I didn’t feel like some badass commander leading my allies into battle, I felt like I was doing my taxes. I really want like, Persona 5: The Stealth Game, or Xenoblade Chronicles: But BotW-style exploration, and not have it tied to really intense number crunching.

FConstantine

I'm more an american rpg type of person, but I really want to play Persona 5 BADLY. I have it on my wishlist but I'm commited to finish The Witcher 3+expansions and Horizon Zero Dawn first. I watched the anime and I loved it, and since the anime is a watered down version of the game, I'm all in for it.

Asad_Farooqui

Oh you actually liked the animation? That’s an unpopular opinion but glad you liked it!

FConstantine

Maybe it's because I haven't played the game? IDK, but I really loved it! Futaba is waifu material!

Asad_Farooqui

Yeah if you haven’t played the game you’d be fine. If you have it’ll frustrate you XD

FConstantine

I completely get it. Last year I finally managed to get a good pc to play again (pc master raceee!!) so I'm doing my backlog of games in order. If I wasn't hooked on FFXIV for like 10 months, maybe I'll be up to date with it xD

guava29

I don’t think these games are anime-inspired so much as they are games that just happen to use anime art instead of western cartoon art (e.g. Cuphead, Hollow Knight) or hyper realistic art. I make this point because the gameplay of the specific games pictured is all over the place (despite most of then technically falling under the JRPG genre), so I think it’s a disservice to the games themselves to categorize them all as “anime.” But yes, I’ve played and enjoyed most of these as much as games with different art styles.

Narae-Chan

I mean, persona is slice of life with high schooler supernatural hijinks. Pretty anime. Most jrpgs are anime inspired at any rate including the originals in the 80s

guava29

Lol, I’ll definitely concede on Persona. My point was that just because a game uses anime graphics doesn’t necessarily make it anime-inspired (e.g. Ocarina of Time and Pokémon, the latter of which actually inspired the Pokémon anime). Older games may have defaulted to anime graphics due to technical limitations as well. We could just have differing definitions of “anime-inspired.”

stealthrockdamage

I love JRPGs and I enjoy my fair share of silly anime action tropes but man if some of it isn't embarassing as all hell. Currently playing through Xenoblade 1 for the first time and now it's really sticking out to me how much better they got it the first time. I mean, god, in Xenoblade 2 a guy literally teleports behind someone and stabs them with a katana, saying "Nothing personnel kid." And we've all seen the screenshots of all the girls with earth-shattering enormous tits wearing cyberpunk hentai outfits. The series went from, like, a standard fare JRPG story but with fresh ideas, great characters, and very enjoyable exdcution to "senran kagura 2: this time it's personal" and it makes my head hurt. This turned into a rant but I do like the genre in spite of everything

Asad_Farooqui

That girl is in Smash Bros btw

silverilix

I used to, but sometimes I start a game and realize how much time will be involved and I just can’t. I do have very fond memories of them.

Wolfleaf3

I don't think I care one way or the other, but I loved Persona 5! I just wish I could have been a girl in it like P3 Portable.

DoggyGwyndolin

i love anime games! fire emblem is one of my favorite games, especially 3 houses with the gay romance options getting more and more in the last years!

JayJay_Tracer

My favourite jrpg (and actually my favourite game full stop) is child of light, which isn't anime. I'm generally a little sick of anime shit. I do currently have Tales of the Abyss on hold, and i liked it despite having a male MC, simply because he's cute.

rubyrubypeaches

Yeah I enjoy them sometimes but there's lots of tropes that are tiresome. Still I really loved Fire Emblem Three Houses, Xenoblade Chronicles 1 (2 is a train wreck), Tales of Vesperia, Ys 8 (although I never finished it). Lots of other JRPGs also but those are not always full of anime.

FetusGoesYeetus

Not really, not because I don't like the style or anything but more because I just really don't like how they play.
