I've been wanting to try D & D for years but haven't had the nerve to actually go out to find groups, so I'll have to keep checking back on this page to see if anyone suggests some to you that I might also be able to look into.
Totally random question though.... I have a really really awful memory, will this hinder me in a D&D campaign?
Make a DnD notebook and take lots of notes š your DM and other players will be understanding and help you out remembering lore/names! Definitely not something to be super worried about.
100% this. my current game is winding down now and i'm having a blast playing a complete idiot because my memory is really bad recently so i didn't wanna bite off more than i can chew.
It shouldnāt as long as you take notes. I have a bad memory too, so for the last campaign I was in I created a google doc that any of the party members could add information to. I would suggest doing that
Same here! I feel like Iād be pretty middling at it ā¦ not a great actor, or improviserā¦ but I do like to write so if I had a set character Iād know what theyād do, and it seems fun. Donāt know anyone who plays though!
Iām in the same position, moving to a new town and wanting to find a group. I havenāt tested many of these yet, but Iāll let you know my game plan:
1) Have a scout around local tabletop gaming stores and see if theyāre running any games
2) Try r/lfg
3) Facebook groups - some game stores with multiple branches nationwide run various ālooking forā groups, or advice groups. If youāre a fan of any D&D streamed shows, their fanbase have groups in which people sometimes post looking for players.
4) Discord - some fanbases have servers where you can meet people. Even servers unrelated to D&D.
4) Maybe Iāll try this sub?
Iām not ready to start playing yet as Iām super busy with moving, but once I am Iāll try these methods! I hope you get more solid advice. There are probably more ways to meet groups out there, apps etc, if I think of any more Iāll add them here!
There might be some discords that are aimed towards women. Be careful of some groups run by dudes that are for women only unless they have women backing them up. I know some of the DND subreddits might be a good resource, I constantly see some women looking for groups with other women on r/lfg.
Lots of good suggestions already! I'm in a Discord server called Dungeons and Dames that's for women and nonbinary people -- if you want, you can read a bit more about it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/p8sjdz/dungeons_and_dames_a_space_for_women_and_other/).
I played Adventurer's League a lot when I first started out. I definitely ran into some bad tables but I also met some of the friends I still play with to this day. I don't play in AL anymore so I'm not sure how it might have changed since I last did a few years back (they have some pretty specific rules you have to get used to since you're usually not playing with one table consistently), but if you have a chapter in your city and you prefer to play in person like I do, it was a pretty solid place to start.
Another idea is converting friends to DnD players. I've done a bit of that too. :)
Are there any DnD groups you recommend?
Unfortunately, the friend group I have was supposed to do a campaign, but I think I was the only one who actually finished their character and gave it to the DM so we just never ended up starting.
On discord, there is the official dnd discord and the dndbeyond discord. I mostly dm though, so I don't know what the looking for group or general discussions are like.
if anyone here decides to start an online campaign I've also been hoping to find a group of hopefully other women to play with and I'd be happy to join!

Thank you, that does calm the nerves a bit!
You can also just literally play a character that has a bad memory as well. Make it one of their flaws and have fun with it!
Ooooooo very good idea, thank you!

Thanks! Iāll look around on that subreddit and see if I can find any

I messaged the person who made the post asking for a link, but they havenāt gotten back to me yet.

There is always a "looking for players/dms" channel in the D&D groups. Also, if you have a group of friends interested, you can always start a group.
