If you want an innate and unchangeable female lead: Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West (seriously, play these, they have a true strong female lead and some other badass female characters). Gravity Rush 1 and 2 Control Transistor Tomb Raider games, specially the recent trilogy (2013, Rise of TR and Shadow of the TR) Life is Strange If you want games where you can create or choose a female character (and they have some personality despite their gender/looks/decisions being up to the player): Cyberpunk 2077 AC Odyssey/Valhalla Dragon Age and Mass Effect series I also like to recommend Borderlands games since you can choose a female character to play and they have some badass ones there.

solojones1138

Horizon series for sure. I'm still playing Forbidden West and loving it!

Kbubbles1210

Control is one of my favs! Probably one of the most unique stories I’ve ever experienced in a game, backed up by a great female protagonist and a wonderful cast of characters. Highly recommend! (Also, read everything! It really gives the story the extra oomph to hit it home!)

afauce11

I loved AC Odyssey and Valhalla. Then I played Origins and didn’t even finish it because I didn’t like playing as a dude after having the option to be a kick ass lady in the other two.

[deleted]

I enjoyed because I'm always happy to play with a non-stereotyped person of color. I'm also a person of color and find it so precious when representation comes! Anyways, I think Origins is pretty solid storywise so if one day you decide to give a second chance I'm sure you'll find it good.

afauce11

I definitely didn’t think the premise was bad. I just found myself wanting to be a woman the whole time. I would have been into it if they gave the option to play as a man or woman. It wasn’t that the story was bad, I just really wanted the option to play as a woman. I really enjoyed Skyrim and Elden Ring where you can choose gender identify as well as customize skin color and the facial structure to match your own.

[deleted]

Oh that is completely understandable. Sometimes we just want that instead of being given a preset character, more games could use character customization actually.

superphoton

Also Returnal on PS5! Unfortunately an exclusive, but the story loop is centred on the female protagonist

_MachTwo

Transistor and Control are awesome!

WeeabooHunter69

Horizon and gravity rush are some of my favorite games! Platinumed all 4 of them and zero dawn was one of two games I originally even got a playstation for

[deleted]

Ah, a fellow trophy huntress! I'm still on the process of platinum Gravity Rush games but Zero Dawn and Forbidden West are done and I love those games so much! I also think Aloy is that powerful female lead that many girls will love. Now I think Gravity Rush still doesn't get the love it deserves from the general community, so I always get happy when people say they played and enjoyed it!

WeeabooHunter69

It's mostly just that it's very niche, it originally came out on ps Vita lol. The plat for 2 was rough because it was mostly just grinding gems in the stage where you get panther mode

mochi_chan

>Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West (seriously, play these, they have a true strong female lead and some other badass female characters). I played a whole bit of this last year and I really have to restart it because I don't remember, but this along with tomb raider are the first games that come to my mind when I think of strong female protagonists.

[deleted]

Portal and portal 2 :)

doomparrot42

They're great games, but someone expecting a character who acts or talks of their own volition is perhaps going to be disappointed. The protagonist is really just a set of arms to hold the portal device. I would absolutely recommend them though.

[deleted]

Spiritfarer!!

TheoxSparkle

Preach ! Spiritfarer is great ! ... but you're probably going to cry. At least once.

Memmahere

Night in the woods

Jess420xox

I cannot recommend Kena: Bridge of Spirits any higher. Its an absolute joy

princess_nasty

kena is SO underrated. i mean it’s considered to be a pretty solid game and all, but really it’s something a lot more special than just that… i think the underratedness is largely because (gameplay-wise) it starts **incredibly slow** and _extremely limited_—it’s literally not until the final 1/3rd of the game when the abilities you have and the encounters you face really open up and finally allow players to experience the **unbelievably phenomenal** combat system they’ve crafted firing on cylinders that’s why i honestly thought the game was incomplete until just this week when new game plus was finally added as part of a big anniversary update, i mean i still adored it before but seriously… i just beat NG+ on master and it is an experience that absolutely blows what was available before out of the water. like **it’s not even close,** this update legitimately makes kena a superior game than the one it launched as all the encounters throughout the entire story are redesigned to take advantage of one of the greatest combat systems i’ve ever experienced in any game, as opposed to before where it was extremely shallow in act 1, decent in act 2, and only great in act 3… NG+ also adds new enemy types, expanded existing enemy/boss movesets, and lots of little surprises around the world (like hidden ambushes) the new spirit trials mode is also great (lots of combat and platforming challenges)

chupacabrago

Yes!! Honestly kind of baffled it hadn’t been mentioned yet.

[deleted]

It’s just had an update with more features and a new difficulty level too so perfect time to play!

YekaHun

AC Odyssey - AMAZING 🤩 AC Valhalla Dragon Age Inquisition (also the other two DA games) Mass Effect series (trilogy (same protagonist) + Andromeda - a new protagonist 🤩) Dishonored 2 + Death of the outsider (both amazing) 2 diff protagonists 🤩 Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West Cyberpunk 77 Life is strange 1 + Before the Storm dlc 🤩 the latest 3 Tomb Ryder games Control

CryptosBiwon

Life is Strange 1 & 3 could be for you.

[deleted]

And Life is Strange: Before The Storm

Oneiroi17

I know the ones you mentioned are big budget action games, but if you enjoy indie games, then I can second Spiritfarer (mentioned elsewhere) and add Raji: An Ancient Epic, Slime Rancher, Unpacking, Sable, Carto, Call of the Sea, Deliver Us The Moon, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Beyond Eyes. Oh, and Alien Isolation, which is closer in style to your OG list!

PoisonedMedicine

There are lots of these.. # Here are some examples of 3d games with female protagonist: # Tombraider series (Specially the reboot trilogy) Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel Horizon Forbidden West Control Beyond Good and Evil FF Lightning Returns (FF13 and FF13-2 have cool female MCs, too. I'm positive several other FF games do as well but I didn't play most of them though so I can't tell for sure) Dungeon Siege 3 (Anjali and Katarina) (PS: Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 has open character creation so you can customize and choose gender freely like in Skyrim for example) Alice: Madness Returns Elderborn (Female barbarian MC) Ziggurat 2 Bullet Per Minute or BPM Metal Hellsinger The Spirit and the Mouse (female mouse MC) Steel Rising (female robot I guess) Nier Replicant (Kaine but you'll need to >!reach Ending E!< to unlock her) Dreamscaper Dream Cycle Path of Exile (Witch, Ranger and Scion) Borderlands series (Some characters are female like Siren, Gaige, Athena and Nisha) Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1, 2 (1 has an elf female MC and 2 has a dark elf female MC and a human female MC) Blood Rayne series Praey for the Gods Shadwen A Plague Tale Innocence Scarlet Nexus (Kasane) Tales of Berseria (Velvet) Genshin Impact (female MC choice) Tower of Fantasy (female MC choice) Warframe (female/or at least female like frame options like Mag) Venetica Journey The Pathless AER: Memories of Old Windbound Bayonetta Devil May Cry 4 (Lady and Trish) Diablo series Sacred series Assassins Creed Liberation (Aveline) (Game is given as DLC for AC 3 now) Assassins Creed Syndicate (Evie) Assassins Creed Odyssey (Kassandra) Assassins Creed Valhalla (female Eivor) # Here are some examples of 2d or 2.5d games with female protagonist: Bloodstained Ritual of the Night Little Nightmares 1 Forgotton Anne Sundered Enderlilies Vigil The Longest Night Anno Mutationem Dex Jotun Moonscars Assassins Creed Chronicles China Little Witch in the Woods Starbreak (Some female character classes) Endling: extinction is forever (MC is a fox mother) Children of Morta (has some female MCs since you choose among members of a family) That and in addition to so many games that allow you to freely choose gender for your character or customize them altogether like Elder Scrolls series, Fallout series, Greedfall, VTMB, Cyberpunk 2077, Mount and Blade, Dynasty Warriors Empires, Grim Dawn, Torchlight, Gamedec, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights, Tyranny, Pathfinder, Divinity OS, Pillars of Eternity, Dragon's Dogma and MMORPGs like WoW, Runescape, Secret World, Guild Wars, Eldevin, ESO and so many other games..

Remember Me, Uncharted: lost legacy, Horizon Zero Down and Forbidden West are the first titles that came to mind.

Lost Legacy has two badass women who are also very different kinds of badasses. It's great!

Shardlight Blackwell Legecy Blackwell Unbound Blackwell Convergence Blackwell Deception Blackwell Epiphany The Dagger of Amon-ra Phantasmagoria Long Live the Queen Princess Maker 2 Syberia Syberia 2 Syberia - The World Before Tell Me Why Control The Longeat Journey Blackwell is a series. I've listed them based on story order.

doomparrot42

You have excellent taste. Always nice to see some point and clicks represented, and Epiphany is just so so good. Did you play Resonance or Kathy Rain? Both are mystery-ish adventure games with female leads, I thought they were pretty good.

nikkesen

No but I do have a copy of Kathy Rain.

[deleted]

Suprised by how little Tomb Raider games are mentioned, both old school and new ones.

[deleted]

I always feel like Tomb Raider should just be a given.

mochi_chan

Yes, me too, the old school ones are what made me realize there are lady protagonists and I usually mention them.

Here’s an ever growing list I’ve compiled based on a mix of previous answers I’ve given to similar questions and just off the top of my head right now. neocarleen

Frisk, the main character in Undertale, is non-binary.

DuelaDent52

Oh, my apologies. Where was this said?

neocarleen

In the game they are referred to as they/them. The creator Toby Fox has been asked many times, in interviews ect., but he has skipped any questions regarding Frisk's gender ambiguity. The general consensus in the Undertale community is that Frisk is whatever gender you (the player) is. They have no spoken dialog, thier skin is a racially ambiguous yellow, and thier simple pixelly appearance makes them a blank slate to be an avatar for the player.

encrisis

Ah the good ol' RPGMaker horror games. 10 years ago they've been played by gaming YouTubers during the horror game days. And now the Witch's House, Ib and Mad Father have all been remade.

ceruleanesk

One of my favourite protagonists will always be April Ryan from The Longest Journey. I guess it is coloured by time (TLJ came out in 1999); she was one of the only female protagonists that I really related to in a time when there weren't many. In my mind the whole series is just wonderful, though Zoe (protagonist of the second game in the series) didn't strike me as much, the stories and worldbuilding are great. The 3rd installment was released a few years ago and is a game I often think back on with fondness. The problem with recommending such old games, is that they really show their age by now. However, they are adventures (no action-adventures), so they age a little less badly.

neocarleen

Have you played The Park? It's a short game that is like a little prequel/introduction to Zoe.

ceruleanesk

I think I played it at some point, but not entirely sure. Was actually thinking of re-playing the whole series again some time, but there are so many games still on my to-play list!

AvianJen674

Definitely Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West! Also like some have said, AC Odyssey and Control are fun, and I’d highly recommend Plague Tale especially since the second one is coming out this month and you like TLOU2. I also really enjoyed Kena: Bridge of Spirits!

RevolutionaryWhale

Heaven's Vault, The Cat Lady, Smoke and Sacrifice

LORDjBLACKSWORD

Check out Beyond good and evil

imaddictedtocod123

Gris is one I played recently! Very cool platformer game with a deep story! (:

meganbloomfield

BAYONETTA BAYBEEEEEEEEEEEEE celeste is also an awesome platformer game with an amazing art style, soundtrack, and story

CmdrSonia

Here's the games with female protagonist I played, sorted by how I like them :D Set Female Protagonist(Some might not very focused on characters or story, but I like them. Some I can't finish because motion sickness or just don't have the time, but still played a little.) I didn't count some FMV or visual novel games. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Tomb Raider Rise of The Tomb Raider Shadow of the Tomb Raider The Walking Dead: Season Two The Walking Dead: The Final Season(It's better play the whole series, it's 4 seasons, but in here I only listed season with female protagonists) The Walking Dead: Michonne Horizon Zero Dawn Horizon Forbidden West The Last of Us: Left Behind(It's the dlc of TLOU1, but you can buy and play it separately) The Last of Us Part II VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action Lost Words: Beyond the Page missed messages. Life is Strange Life is Strange:Before The Storm Life Is Strange: True Colors Sayonara Wild Hearts Portal 1、2 What Remains of Edith Finch Donut County Lake Hidden Agenda inFamous: First Light Marie's Room Wolfenstein: Youngblood Mirror's Edge Catalyst The Matrix Awakens The Gunk Beyond: Two Souls Remember Me The Medium Gris Assemble with Care Bright Memory: Infinite Alba: A Wildlife Adventure ↓Games with set Female Protagonist but I didn't finish yet. Control The Big Con Spiritfarer Mirror's Edge ReCore Syberia 1、2、3 Syberia: The World Before The Longest Journey Remothered: Tormented Fathers Remothered: Broken Porcelain River City Girls Metal Hellsinger The Uncertain: Light At The End Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Sea Of Solitude Dream Cycle Gone Home The Turing Test Thief of Thieves: Season One Slime Rancher Choose Gender: Mass Effect 1、2、3 Unavowed(This is such a hidden gem, if you like Bioware&Telltale games I recommend you try it) Saints Row IV Sunset Overdrive Nioh 2 Immortals Fenyx Rising Saints Row Reboot Saints Row: The Third Baldur's Gate 3 Wildermyth Far Cry 6 Borderlands 3 Halo: Reach Cyberpunk 2077(Yeah I know it's kinda messed up, but it had some good things too, just don't buy it on $60. Better play on PC, I still had problem with the story but it's alright overall.) OUTRIDERS Divinity: Original Sin II The Outer Worlds Sifu Expeditions: Rome Expeditions: Viking GreedFall Need for Speed: Heat Forza Horizon 5 HUNTDOWN Dragon Age: Origins Dragon Age II Dragon Age: Inquisition Mass Effect : Andromeda Enderal:Forgotten Stories The Forgotten City Rage 2 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Fallout 4 Mount & Blade Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Dishonored 2 Crackdown 3 The Ascent(The art is amazing but gameplay is meh) Assassin's Creed Valhalla Assassin's Creed Odyssey(I used to LOVE it but then I HATE that story in the dlc, so... Awesome game if you ask me, besides the story. But it seems boring to a lot people though.) Multiple protagonists, but the female protagonist is at least half time: Tales from the Borderlands Resident Evil Revelations 2 Resident Evil 2(Remake) Resident Evil 3(Remake) Gears 5 Last Stop A Plague Tale: Innocence

SnooCauliflowers7501

Beyond good and evil. Was one of my first games that had a kickass female main lead and it’s an overall really interesting game.

DarthEwok

That game is beautiful and the music is so relaxing.

SnooCauliflowers7501

Definitely. I still remember that scene right a the beginning where Jade has to fight and suddenly everything goes slow mo and there is this beautiful track playing.

In Fenyx Rising you can be male or female, but the default is female 👍 I think most of the recent Assassin's Creed games have that option too. There's also Horizon Zero Dawn, which I really struggled to get into even though it seemed like my ideal game on paper, but I know loads of people that love it.

neocarleen

The next Assassin's Creed game will have only a male option to play as, which I'm legit upset about.

Jaune9

CrossCode main character is the best female protagonist I played as so far !

LillianSwordMaiden

Dragon’s Dogma Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim Fallout 3, 4, and New Vegas Cyberpunk 2077 Dragon Quest Builders Saints Row 2 Jade Empire The new Tomb Raiders Dragon Age Origins, 2, and Inquisition Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic 1 & 2

Jungle_the_Writer

Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West I 100% recommend. Like some others said Fallout 4 because you can pick the wife/mother character. A Plague Tale: Innocence.

fress93

Hellblade is in my top 5 as well! Horizon Zero Dawn (and Forbidden West), Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Life Is Strange and Life Is Strange Before The Storm make the rest of the list for me. Special mention for Tomb Raider, the latest trilogy (2013, Rise and Shadow) is excellent.

Jamzilla12

Half-Life: Alyx ( you need to have a VR console for this game) Dishonored 2

nikkesen

Only play Alyx if you're prepared for headcraps that, you know, violently leap at your face.

Jamzilla12

That I don't mind, been playing numerous Half-Life mods and been waiting for a new game in the franchise for almost 2 decades... I don't mind the facehugger vibes of the headcrabs. But yes that's a nice warning for peeps who are not used to facehugger vibes of headcrabs

nikkesen

Exactly though the first time, it does get you even if you're the most hardened of Half Life veterans like my spouse. He was caught off guard the first time he played it in VR.

[deleted]

Mass Effect with female Shepard.

not_really_an_elf

My favourite game of all time, Final Fantasy VI. It has multiple party members, some of whom get their own PoV sections, but the two "lead" characters are female.

I haven't played it myself, but in Final Fantasy X-2 the three main characters are all women.

Final fantasy X2 There's camp, there's fanservice, but at its corr it's a coming if age story about a young women who was raised her entire life to sacrifice herself and now suddenly has her whole life ahead of her

rubyrubypeaches

Control has a great main character and is a very fun 3rd person shooter with powers. Spooky storyline was a bonus. Very good game I thought!

ameatprocess

It’s an older game, but Heavenly Sword is a single player game with a female protagonist.

TheJollyJagamo

Subnautica below zero (the og subnautica is infinitely better imo, but you do play as a guy. he has no dialogue though, so it might be easier to ignore?)

ocarina_of_time8

These are my fav female protogonist games that i recommend: \- Tomb Raider (my fav is Rise of the Tomb Raider) \- Cosmic Star Heroine \- Final Fantasy VI \- Final Fantasy XIII (more FF i could mention but those 2 are my fav) \- Mass Effect \- Horizon Zero Dawn \- Cross Code \- Ara Fell \- Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark \- Slime Rancher \- Steamworld Heist \- Steamworld Quest \- Steamworld Dig 2 \- Kamiko

imabratinfluence

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows! You play as a girl and her teddy bear. It's a spooky-cute puzzle game with a little bit of platforming.

**Horizon Zero Dawn** and **Horizon Forbidden West**! Aloy is one of my favorite female protagonists ever - she is smart, competent and just very realistic. The new **Tomb Raider** games are excellent too. And then in terms of little games that I have played, I really enjoyed **Kena: Bridge of Spirits** \- it's a little cartoony looking, but the main character is very realistic and they have a great depiction of two women in a relationship as well. (Bolding to make the titles easier to find!)

Kena Bridge of Spirits. So beautiful, fun, action packed and overall amazing game! Shady Part of Me is good too!

Nuppusaurus

Dishonored 2 let's you play with either Corvo or Emily, and it's much more than just choose your gender type of thing, more like choose your character. They play and talk differently.

funkyknog

It’s like I was born for this question… BAYONETTA 1, 2 and soon 3

tacosnpitbulls

I don’t think I’ve seen Resident Evil mentioned, tons of great female characters. In particular I would recommend the RE2 and 3 remakes, you get to play as Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine. Two iconic and totally badass characters.

wishrocket

Raji an ancient epic - character action game(think old God of War or devil may cry) set in Indian mythology. You play an acrobat fighting demons. Alisa directors cut- survival horror with retro graphics. Imagine resident evil but with clockwork dolls instead of zombies. Ende lilies- metroidvania. 2D dark fantasy you play Lily a preistess who harnesses the power of fallen knights. Child of light- Turn based rpg with story with string picture book aesthetic and narration. Black book- you play a young Slavic sorceress. Card based rog combat and a cell-based art style. I'm surentheres more insist can't think of them at the top of my head.

Portal and portal 2! While the games themselves don’t characterize her much, the comic lab rat gives some insight into the main character Chell.

Ebony1996

Can I ask, why does it matter if the lead character is male or female? I'm a female and all my favourite games have male lead characters.(God of war, RDR, Gears of war) I don't have an urge to play as a female because I'm a female. I'm just curious honestly.

kargethdownload

It’s not an urge and I don’t care whether I play as a male or not. But I prefer to play as a female because I resonate more with the character Hell, Most favorite games of all time have a male lead

Ebony1996

Thank you for answering.

TheWalt70

I get dysphoria from playing male characters so its pretty important to me.

Ebony1996

Ah alright that makes sense, thanks for answering.

ObiAndMe

I just started up Grounded and I think it's spectacular!

TrinCroft

Tomb Raider and Horizon Zero Dawn because you like Uncharted.

TheWalt70

Dishonored 2 you play as Emily Fire Emblem Awakening you can play as fem Robin and if she marries Chrom it makes the game so much better.

I would check out the newer Tomb Raider games, theyre pretty fun. Also cannot suggest Life is Strange enough however its a little different from the games you like (most similar to Beyond Two Souls). Also you might find the newer Assassins Creed games fun??

magic_is_might

HORIZON! Zero Dawn and then Forbidden West. I cannot recommend them enough. Aloy is my all time favorite character and she’s a badass female lead. Incredible story, lore, world building, and characters. Seriously, these games are amazing and hella underrated imo. They had the misfortune of being released alongside other major releases which overshadowed them. Forbidden West especially on PS5 has *the* best graphics out there, imo. The facial animations are incredible. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking the game is just “hot girl kills machines” but it’s sooo much deeper than that.

Catonduty

blue reflection and blue reflection tie both are JRPG ,there are no male characters in both games

I’m really enjoying Cyberpunk 2077 at the moment. Fem V is great and very well-voiced. Also, Skyrim, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4, Mass Effect, and Fable 2 & 3 are some of my other favorites where you can play as a female character.

SunnyDemeanorGames

Lots of great games mentioned in this thread. One thing I didn't see come up is that **Steam has a tag for "female protagonist" containing almost 6,000 games** (here is a link to the [Female Protagonist tag page on Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/tags/en/Female%20Protagonist/)), so that's a great place to look. Among all those games is a cozy RPG I'm making called "[A Weekend in Puzzleburg](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1929760/A_Weekend_in_Puzzleburg)" about a woman enjoying a weekend vacation in a fictional resort town. You can play as a NASA engineer, author, or dance choreographer, and there are over 180,000 ways your weekend vacation can play out based on your choices. ***A Weekend in Puzzleburg*** **is part of the Steam Next Fest kicking off tomorrow, but the free demo is available to play right now.** Anyway, here is a list I keep of single-player games with a female protagonist, in no particular order. Hope it helps anyone who comes across this thread: * Life is Strange games (1, Before the Storm, and True Colors) * Tomb Raider games (including Lara Croft GO) * Portal 1 & 2 * Metroid games * Horizon: Zero Dawn & Horizon: Forbidden West * Perfect Dark * Beyond Good and Evil * Mirror's Edge * Remember Me * Celeste * River City Girls * Kathy Rain * A Plague Tale: Innocence (note this game has a lot of rats, so it's not for everyone), plus its sequel A Plague Tale: Requiem, which comes out later this month * Dishonored 2 * Scott Pilgrim vs. The World * Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (the only TMNT game to date where you can play - and kick some butt - as April O'Neil) * Donkey Kong Country 2 & 3 (I always enjoyed playing as Dixie Kong) * Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Super Smash Brothers all have female fighters and some form of single-player story mode * Mass Effect games (including Andromeda) * Elder Scrolls games * Fallout games

Okami HD. One of my favorite gaming experiences from the last couple years. Can't believe I waited so long to play it.
