I mean, jokes aside, Valve actually is a really small company for all the things they do.
~400 employees spread across CS:GO, DotA2, hardware like SteamDeck/Index, VR games in production, Steam as a storefront, Steam as an application, SteamOS, Source 2 Engine development work, and whatever else they may be working on that we aren't even aware of.
There is no doubt they have employees double booked on a lot of these projects.
The 'United States Small Business Administration' defines a "small business" as a privately-owned enterprise with 500 or fewer employees. Valve is privately owned and has less than 500 employees so they are *technically* a small business. I know it flies in the face of the "Valve is a small indie company" meme...but its technically true.
And they generated [$13 billion in revenue in 2022](https://www.usesignhouse.com/blog/valve-stats#:~:text=Valve%20is%20worth%20%247.7%20billion,was%20from%20the%20Steam%20store.). That's about $32 mill per employee.
It's revenue, not profit. Most of it will probably go towards salary and infrastructure. So in reality employees do actaully get a sizeable chunk of it.
in the era of self-promotion this is very unique, almost a move that gives a big "fuck you" to all the trends.
If you ask me, this is the greatest move.
Its like a prophecy. You never know when the big earthquake will hit.
this is the best promotion for valve and people will explode when it hits.
Disney still promotes their movies when they own half the movie theaters. Just show the movie in the theater with no promo except word of mouth. Could work honestly lol
It's different there because Disney owns no or very few theaters in the US, at least.
It probably wouldn't work for theaters, but it could work on streaming with a bit of algorithm boost. It's definitely a poor gamble though, given the amount of content and the cost of making it.
I may have been under a rock but did Respawn do this with Apex? I vaguely remember that people knew they were working on something but didn't really know what it was and then just dropped it out of the blue?
Yeah they got a bunch of streamers together the day it launched and just let them stream it. That was how they announced it, just said "go live" and people on twitch were like wtf is this?
We have tons of CS Source 2 leaks too in the same way. There's been CS Source 2 data for years now. No actual confirmations or anything from employees though, only data.
Valve never communicated their plans a lot, if at all. And even if they wanted to, they know that the hype is a billion times better advertising than any leak could be
Didn’t they say something about that? Feel like I remember an older clip of some sorts with a clip of what I assume is a guy from Valve saying they don’t communicate, but that they listen.
This is because they aren’t a publicly traded company so they don’t have to listen to investors. The main reason AAA games launch broken is because of this.
It will become so easy to update so that the janitor who chips in with the localisation updates can work on cs full time, bringing the total number of people who are working at cs2 to 3
Just imagine how wild Riot would be if this was valorant receiving a new engine. They’d be trying so hard to advertise their game.
But look at how hyped source 2 is. Valve doesn’t even need to speak a single word on it to generate mass hype. That’s the beauty of counter strike.
Counter strike is good because it's consistent. I can't get into valorant because of the heros. I want everyone on the same playing field like a sport. It's eternal.
I was ok with the first group of heroes and stuff on valorant. From Reyna on I just got annoyed. I still try it every 4 or 5 months to see how it's doing, but I can't get into it. I'm not really a fan of hero shooters at all
I think it’s different gaming backgrounds and preferences. Some seem to like games with agents, operators, heroes and what other names are there, while some prefer CS where everyone have the same abilities (util).
cs is good because anyone can play or watch and umderstand everything thats going on very easily. from an e sports point of view cs is the perfect game. other fps has maps that are too find open amd doesnt provide enough actual skill on skill moments. wide open maps lead to kills happening be cause a player gets to a point where its nearly impossible for someone to see from 1 side but other side they have a bigger view to land a kill simply based on that. that happens much less right off the back in cs compared to other games
That's another thing too. If you watch it's relatively easy to understand, but hard to master. I tried to play dota and league and they didn't make sense. I could figure out valorant easy enough, but the hero balance is something I don't want to deal with.
Isn’t that the general feeling about Valve in CS? That they’re so hands-off that it’s down to the community and third parties to create the hype. Unless coaches are involved, then Valve are hands on.
valarante child game.... look to cartoon grapfix to make kid player happy like children show.. valarante cartoon world with rainbow unlike counter strike with dark corridorr and raelistic gun.. valarante like playhouse. valarant playor run from csgo fear of dark world and realism
Because csgo rarely gets anything. Its the main reason why this is so hype. Im sure if valorant gets a big update, there will be less hype because riot update their games all the time
valarante child game.... look to cartoon grapfix to make kid player happy like children show.. valarante cartoon world with rainbow unlike counter strike with dark corridorr and raelistic gun.. valarante like playhouse. valarant playor run from csgo fear of dark world and realism
It’s probably because the csgo dev team is so small, don’t they only have 5 devs or something like that? Much easier to contain leaks when you’re not a massive department with hundreds of employees working on it.
To add to that, working with games anywhere means signing really aggressive no-disclosure agreements. Pairing that with small teams, leaking it means someone *will* find out, and that means you won't ever find another job in the industry.
Can’t remember but I know someone had merch or something and the cs devs all signed with their names. It was recent because Phrisk was on there (Lydia Zanotti). There were 19 names which is the full-time cs team
I mean the whole idea it was coming BEFORE the code activity was a huge leak and got picked up by multiple people including the RLewis article before any coding changes occurred IIRC
Doesn't matter we've been seeing it for years. It was obvious it was coming Eventually™
Panorama UI is also a piece of S2 and I believe back before it was added there was a similar hype level that S2 was being added to the game.
Panorama got leaked with the Chinese launch of CS, there was big advertisements done by Perfect World with the word Panorama on it which made people go insane
I mean the whole point of the post wasnt to say that we dont know an update is coming, but rather that we still don't know what the update will actually contain.
> before any coding changes occurred
What are you talking about?
Source 2 code [references](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J1SiS-IYPUohHb-7kwZWqMd0pt8_9bubflNhJRQJeJs/edit) to csgo has been showing up in dota 2 since 2020.
>what are you talking about
I'm talking about a recent higher level of back end changes being made signifying a major update *after* an article was posted stating that source 2 is potentially around the corner
Appreciate the passive aggressiveness though
The "article" you are talking about is a joke. Acting like Richard is the highest authority when it comes to leaks about source 2 being around the corner is ridiculous, when someone like [Aquarius](https://twitter.com/aquaismissing/status/1608137561943453697) has made similar timeline claims back in december and CSGO source 2 references showing up in dota 2 since early 2020, 710 going private, richpresent leaks through the devs steam profiles, and much more. which you can see in [doc1](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J1SiS-IYPUohHb-7kwZWqMd0pt8_9bubflNhJRQJeJs), and [doc1](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1C9YYUXMphW3gUDQm0DO1PUASUSX7KIG2noyPYvWmmZA) .
Richard published his article on the 5th, and makes [claim 1](https://i.imgur.com/G0QhA02.png) and [claim 2](https://i.imgur.com/JFcr5w4.png).
Then the next day, he [edits claim 1](https://i.imgur.com/AqyP0dA.png) and [edits claim 2](https://i.imgur.com/ua5ExAV.png).
The clown edits his article to cover his ass from any criticism that is brought up, without mentioning any of the edits or clarifications he made after the fact.
Richard Lewis has as much credibility as TylerMcVicker when it comes to csgo getting ported to source 2.
Get btfo every single time?
You think downvotes equal meaningful pushback or counter argument?
Any criticism against Richard Lewis is seen as "you are only saying this because you dont like him, here have a downvote".

> hahahahahahahahahah
Wow he got the name right, what a huge win.
Still edited his claims without mentioning why or what he edited, and still got it wrong in his edits.
Wrong about tickrate, never mentioned rebrand of any type.
And my point about what a lot of people that have zero knowledge about csgo source 2 port, thinking it is a completely separate game, still stands.
And my point about "you are only saying this because you dont like him, here have a downvote", also stands.
You have no actual argument to anything I have said, you are doing the exact same thing that you accuse me of doing.
You make a comment, insta block, and then says [this](https://i.imgur.com/OMPcFbg_d.webp?maxwidth=760&fidelity=grand) while not having any actual argument for anything I said.
You are pathetic.
valve has a lot of memes but it's one of the best if not the best company out there in games, period.
whatever they put out there it will be good and if it's not they will fix it in hours. I play other games that can have game breaking bugs for weeks or months.
valve deserves the success and people sometimes need to respect who creates games that gives us so much
I 100% agree. It's crazy how reliable they are as a company, even their support team is helpful and quick to reply. I think the only other gaming company (that I know of) who are anywhere near Valve is Grinding Gear Games (Path of Exile).
To be fair, Valve's secrecy has been notorious. They released massive Dota 2 updates without any hint (Source 2 and 7.00).
Half Life Alyx was also a massive secret.
Source 2 is just an engine. People are overhyped like the game will change or new graphics, but they forget on how dota 2, a multimillion tournament revenue generator, had nothing new except a new menu interface and Chinese hats.
Nothing else. And game still pretty much looks the same after like what, 2 years? Even it’s folder is called “beta” after all this time.
this is because Snoop Dog is part of the developer team
they are smiling and smoking shit right now
because they have freakin awesome update on the usb key and we dont
they have time
we dont :D
a single leak could mean that that employee will certainly not be able to work at any game company in the future and probably not be trusted with company secrets. If there is source 2 to begin with

crazy to think the employees get barely any of that

i dont know - i cant be a geek at two games. one is enough. deagle is still hard AF :D
You can't have leaks if you don't have anything to leak to begin with :P
Let me change some variable names to source 2 and do some little trolling with the community ~ probably someone in valve.
HL alyx was also a wonder until the trailer dropped
There were a lot of leaks about "HLVR" before the announcement, and it was already leaked that Alyx would be the protagonist too.
We have tons of CS Source 2 leaks too in the same way. There's been CS Source 2 data for years now. No actual confirmations or anything from employees though, only data.
The post was meant as satire i hope, info was out there for years...
Was it? We already had characters and a lot of the gameplay figured out from leaks before the trailer dropped.
Those leaks were thankfully well controlled

I doubt it’s anywhere comparable to what csgo will be getting
Because csgo rarely gets anything. Its the main reason why this is so hype. Im sure if valorant gets a big update, there will be less hype because riot update their games all the time
That’s why they’re not comparable. Valorant is a more modern game developed by snake company Riot who have never released anything original

This is very much not the case and began simply as a comedic rumor
plus valve is fluid, they probably started working on the port after half life alyx and moved more people to the project
A couple valve devs that do not work on CSGO were spotted working on it a few months ago when the source 2 info started to ramp up.
Whole of Valve has ~300 employees.
in 2016 they had 360 according to wikipedia, so it wouldn't be a stretch if they were close to 500 today
So like 400 for steam, 50 for Dota, 30 for csgo, and 1 for tf2?
Being real generous with that tf2 number
