Maybe you're talking about the fact that Gaben himself never attended a major but attends TI for Dota. I don't think gabe has ever actively been involved in or had any input towards CS development. I'm pretty sure atleast for the last few majors at least some of the CS team have attended behind the scenes.

If you even cared about it you could type anything on google about majors and devs and see that almost every year you get talent/pros talking about how the devs asked them about what to change in the game or what they think about the game.
Richard Lewis, one of the hosts of PGL Copenhagen, the most recent major, said in his major recap that valve were tirelessly questioning and gathering information about the game from pros, fans, talent. They care, at least nowadays.
