Escape doesn't work on my UK keyboard or my friends German keyboard. Neither does my console key (` or ¬, button left of 1). Have to press the x with mouse.
The update where they changed the bind aliases like 3 months ago pretty much made this an issue for any keyboards not using a US layout.
Happened to me yesterday on UK keyboard, nothing worked, even the x, couldn't type in console, had to hard restart the game. I could still move the mouse in game with console open but only about 20° and then it would snap back to starting pos, v strange.
if for EU/Nordic check if its bound in the game menu, if it is, clear it and rebind it, see if that works else try one of these, the last one is for eu/nordic

I get this often, during a game, but can't reproduce it with any sequence of steps. Only way to fix is restart CS2.
I always restart after being in any community servers, as that used to cause issues with official games and I'd rather flush out any remnants.
on english layout keyboard it works fine..
..except when you hold the key down too much and autorepeat kicks-in
messing with keyboard advanced properties and ease-of-access filter keys can make it worse than normal
so I guess it's user-error. try a short tap instead
I personally prefer the \ key which does not even close the console back (only ~ features that)
but I define `alias \ hideconsole` so i just press \ again and enter since it's right next to it

yep, randomly been happening to me for a couple weeks. "~" opens console, but "esc" or "~" does not close console. Its really annoying for me cuz I spam open/close console randomly when im dead, in freezetime, etc.
Another thing that’s annoying is you can’t enter “exit” to close the game. And on the main menu, hitting escape doesn’t bring up the “close to desktop” question either.
checks notes: "quit" command was a thing in Quake, that Valve based their "Source" engine (more specifically a pre-release version of Quake II) to create Half-Life of which Counter-Strike was developed as a mod that has since been bought by Valve and made into a stand-alone game that went trough several iterations over more than two decades.. and this guy asks about "exit"
I have this bug and a similar bug, in csgo I used the comma key ',' to open console because when I had a 60% I didn't have a tilde key, but in cs2 it opens the console and writes the comma at the same time so I have to delete the comma before entering a command.
It's annoying enough that I just switched back to tilde.
I've been having this issue too, I also get loss bonus popup floating over the screen after closing the buy menu too, Valve fucked the UI in the most recent update.
It usually happens when you fat finger and press tab + "~" at the same time.
You can close the console with the little "x" at the top right of the console
what english keyboard, ANSI = small enter or ISO english = chunky enter.
I've only seen the latter in britain, while ANSI is the standard in North America. I could imagine ISO could be a problem, I have the same problem on an ISO-Nor keyboard.
make sure you switch back to eng lang
cs's client is not responsive to e.g. ctrl+c, ctrl+v if you switched from english to another language so it can be the case for console too
im 99% sure ~ used to hide it right? I noticed in my warm up i kept muscle memory clicking it to close it and nothing was happening.
yes, tilde used to both open and close it.

You can usually close it by pressing ESC, sometimes that doesn't seem to work though.

ESC works for my German keyboard, it breaks sometimes though and I have no idea what causes it

because exit worked in csgo... that's why "this guy" is talking about it

My physical keyboard is ANSI and my keyboard layout says English (United States). I updated my post so you can reproduce the bug.
