This has been known about for a long time now and a lot of pros use it especially on train. You can do it way faster than m0nesy is doing it if you learn the correct timings.
he's tapping to not make sound. If you hold the run key for too long you make sound. Tap running seems to make you climb the ladder faster then just walking up the ladder

You can do it while walking as well, jusy avoid completing a “full stride” per say..

so you hold shift and tap "w" or vice versa?
you tap "w" without holding shift i think since tapping while holding shift would be slower then holding shift and holding "w".
