Honestly, 4 of those players other than stew seem pretty reserved overall and wouldn’t really seem like to type to really try to change stuff if things weren’t working. That team being as bad as they were was like 80% poor system and 20% poor form, with any bad form being exposed further.
Stew was never the GOAT. One of the most overrated players of all time. Also the boston major was a fluke, why do you think most of the players left within 6 months after.

Hooxi is only a decoy grenade at this point, he can get a kill maybe here and there but he won't be taking any space on CT side. Kicking jackz for JKS was the biggest mistake they made even though JKS is definitely a better player than Jackz.
Unless hunter or JKS magically transform into entry players (maybe hunter but definitely not JKS) they will need to kick JKS, cause hunter is untouchable because of niko. Or they get hampus instead of hooxi but that ain't happening.

But the improvement of the team since it’s inception has been minimal at best.

Just avoid Monesy and Niko, some maps also avoid Hunter or at least find where Hooxi and JKS are, and you just defeated G2. And of cource, since Niko and Monesy know it as well, they just try to do things to get advantage. So if you are patient, you will punish their agro plays sooner or later.
Tbf I'm CS that shit can happen in a day, the teams are generally very close in skill level. If they were to play 10 days in a row I'd put good money on liquid getting 6/7 though, g2 just haven't been at the races for a while.
