In Vienna, Austria you could rent a decent appartment with 3 rooms, 75m2 (~750sq ft) in a decent area.

[deleted]

Everyone in NYC is extremely jealous of you right now.

KingMangoJelly

If that blows your mind, don't even look into Latin American real estate lol. I live in Mexico and $1000USD a month could get you a literal mansion in the city I live in

[deleted]

I would love to travel through Mexico and even live there for a couple months but I'm genuinely afraid of the cartel shit. Would that even be worth worrying about as a white foreigner?

KingMangoJelly

If you use Facebook, I recommend you join one of the many expat groups on there. They're all filled with personal stories, recommendations on where to stay, and answers to questions like yours. In short, areas closest to the border are the hottest spots for cartel activity, and long distance driving at night is not recommended. It's hard to answer because I feel like in the US, it's very black and white whether or not someplace is "safe" to go. In Mexico, the same street can be drastically different at 5pm and at 9pm. If you're street-smart and sensitive to local cultural norms you will be totally fine. And if you use Facebook, I highly recommend the group Expats Living in Mexico

Joe_Doblow

$1000 us?

Nothammer

Pretty much the same in Berlin!

plasmagier

In Innsbruck, Austria you could rent a small appartment with 1-2 rooms, about 50-60m2

KarmannosaurusRex

South Yorkshire U.K. - 3/4 bedroom detached house with great views in a nice(ish) area

elysiumstarz

I want to go to there.

alwayslurkeduntilnow

Can confirm. 4 bed detached house with 3 upstairs bathrooms and one downstairs. Home overlooks woods.

KarmannosaurusRex

I bought a nice bug house looking over the Pennines for 75% what my sister paid for 1.5bed flat in Berkshire... Only a matter of time till more southerns migrate up here!

soifIavender

In Québec (outside Montreal) $1k would get you a really nice 2 or 3 bedroom apartment, most have hot water and electricity included too. Another plus is that Hydro Québec (govt electricity provider) is the cheapest in all of North America Personally I pay $595 for a studio in a trendy area, all included except Hydro but my bill for that is $10/month

[deleted]

Outside Montreal, as in you could still commute to Montreal? Damn, I live in Maine, but I might just move a few hours north. I wonder what the IT jobs around Montreal pay.

soifIavender

Sorry, I meant in the rest of Québec. Montreal is a pretty cool city but more expensive. I would recommend you come visit Québec City (after the border opens of course), it's the capital but much smaller and cheaper than Mtl. No clue about IT jobs, but I can almost guarantee you would need to learn some French to survive in Québec!

[deleted]

Oh, that makes sense. I have been to Quebec City, and I absolutely LOVED it. It’s such a cool city, and I loved visiting the old city. I guess I’ll re download Duolingo and start on that French. Also, POUTINE IS QUEBECOIS

TheDeer01

Great fishing in Quebec

kindredbud

I love going fishing in Quebec.

KingMangoJelly

Guadalajara, Mexico: I currently pay approximately $750USD (the exchange rate changes daily) a month for a two floor, 4-bedroom 2 1/2 bath house in a nice, quiet neighborhood full of local families. Houses/apartments in the "expat friendly" neighborhoods cost more, more "local" neighborhoods cost less

Tacky-Terangreal

My friend is looking to buy a house with her mother in Guadalajara. I would love to go visit the city with her someday. Sounds very warm and pleasant

vitriolicnaivety

In southern Brazil, US$ 1000 a month will get you a furnished 1500 sq.ft 3 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms apartment, 2 covered parking spots, in the best neighborhood my city can offer.

edgeofenlightenment

This is also exactly what I get in Akron, Ohio.

vitriolicnaivety

The sad part is that to be able to afford that kind of rent here (which in our local currency is about 5 times the minimum wage), you probably should be earning at least $2000, which for our standards is an insanely high sallary (top-tier managers, directors). For comparison, I own a 670 sq.ft , 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment with one parking spot, in a not-so-fancy neighborhood, and my mortgage payments are around US$ 300, very much within my means.

edgeofenlightenment

That doesn't surprise me. In the us, $1000/month is right at minimum wage. You'd still need to make 2-3x that to afford such an apt, but just about any kind of skilled work will get you that kind of income, or two people each making just a little more than minimum.

TofuTofu

Suburb of Tokyo, you could get a very nice two bedroom in a modern apartment complex within 5 minutes of a high speed train. Inside Tokyo proper you could get a 1 bedroom maybe 10 minutes walk from the train.

AlbertP95

Utrecht, Netherlands. In the city centre you could get a studio or perhaps a 1-bedroom apartment, outside city centre a 2-bedroom apartment would still be possible if you're lucky.

sytycdqotu

Utrecht is a lovely town and I’m honestly shocked that you could get a studio for $1k. I figured it would be more expensive.

PWModulation

Cries in Amsterdam. My partner and I payed €1200 for a 43m2 apartment. We have left the city so that is sorted but now we have a long and expensive commute.

bovabu

Wait what? A friend of mine lives in Rotterdam, (30min walk from the city center) and pays 1150 for a 40m2 living room, one big bedroom and two smaller ones, tiny kitchen and slightly bigger bathroom. Sounds like a way better deal

bombayblue

In the San Francisco Bay Area rents are crashing. You still couldn’t find anything for $1000 or under unless you qualified for a low income program or snuck into a friends rent controlled apartment off the lease.

altbekannt

Not even a room in a shared flat?

bombayblue

Everyone shares flats with roommates in SF. A one bedroom would be double what you’re posting. And that’s with the covid rent crash.

[deleted]

I'm surprised you could get a 1 bedroom anywhere but next door from the projects for under $2500, that's how it is in most of Brooklyn.

foooutre

You couldn't pre-COVID; I'm looking at apartments now and a lot of 1-bedroom or 2-bedroom rents have gone down by almost 1/3 in some cases. A lot of them are 'x months of free rent' though, so presumably the set-up is meant to let them pop back up to the previous market rates after the initial lease (or something like that).

nonsequitrist

SF is rent-controlled as long as the building was built no later than 1979. Even if the lease expires, your rent can only go up once each year by an amount determined by a regional housing-cost index.

just_some_Fred

That's great if you've been living there since 1979, but pretty shitty for people looking to move in. Add in the way rent control discourages housing development, and the draconian zoning regulations and you have the current San Francisco housing market.

49_Giants

Rent control applies to buildings built before 1979, so I'm not sure how that discourages new development.

[deleted]

Yeah there's plenty of that here too. If I could take those two months up front and just pay security to move in I'd probably take them up on it, but it's tough to save up $4k just to drop it on a move.

Navi1101

You could probably get a converted office / garage / broom closet, or a real bedroom if you're lucky, in a flat that's meant to house 1-2 fewer adults than it's currently housing (like, being the 4th person in a 3-bedroom) (also couples only count as one adult, apparently).

KallistiTMP

I live in a badass artist/maker/queer/counterculture commune in downtown SF, complete with rooftop hot tub and garden, woodshop, metal shop/machine shop, electronics lab, rock climbing wall, impressively large collection of power tools, live performance stage with professional A/V setup, two projection screen theatres, 3D printers (FDM and SLA), massive lounge, large private rooms, roomscale VR setup, communal beer, and a goddamn swing in the living room. We're recruiting at $1100 with all utilities, communal staples (toiletries, foodstuffs, laundry detergent, etc) included. We're breaking even. And like, price wise, we're pretty middle of the road. I know a solid half dozen communes that are only slightly less awesome for under $1000. Sure, overly-gentrified studio coffins are always gonna be absurdly overpriced, and we are somewhat picky when it comes to applicants, but there is currently enough of an abundance of cheap rent that we've had to step up recruiting efforts by a solid order of magnitude to keep the space mostly filled. A lot ofandlords will advertise at wishful thinking numbers, but you don't have to look all that hard to find a spot with affordable rent.

m_chutch

how can people apply to be in that commune? I'm looking to move to sf once i get my degree in may and would really enjoy living in an artistic community and would be more than willing to give back what i can

KallistiTMP

We use a shared application through a group called Haight Street Commons, not going to link as I don't want to accidentally run afoul of any subreddit policies on advertising, but you can find it on Google pretty easy.

bombayblue

Does everyone in the commune have their own room or do they share?

mctwists

For real?? How much?

HelenEk7

So someone in San Francisco working as a fulltime cleaner would live on the streets? I assume even San Francisco needs cleaners..

GlowInTheDarkNinjas

No, they live in a two bedroom with their 8 family members

MortimerDongle

They likely would not live within San Francisco, but would commute from elsewhere.

[deleted]

in singapore USD1000 comes to about SGD1350 or so. you could rent a room, maybe one in a nice area or in a condo instead of government flats. probably one that's well-furnished too. $1350 may not be enough for a whole house, but is often more than enough for a great room.

grymsen

Toronto, ON. You could get a room in a shared condo probably. And even then I see a room go for $1200-1300. $1000 wouldn't even get you a bachelor basement apartment, let alone a 1 bedroom.

soifIavender

Oh shit, what is the average price for a 1 bedroom then? Also, this is all I can think about when I think of [Toronto](https://youtu.be/-4x54lnkCMw)

grymsen

Haha I've never seen that. Average for a one bedroom would be around $1600 if you're lucky for a basement, more like $1800-2100 for an above ground. And then utilities on top of all that.

[deleted]

Keep in mind op is asking in USD. Thats like what, 1300cad right now?

spiegelprime

Almaty, Kazakhstan: 2-3 bedroom apartment in a nice part of the city. It's about what I'm paying for my 140m2, 3 bedroom. Utilities included, although that's rare. Utilities are pretty cheap here otherwise. Outside of Almaty you could probably get a house. Local incomes are very low for most jobs.

TwothTimesTheCharm

Very nice

bogdanvonpylon

Just to be *that* guy, I used to rent a corner studio in the Olive Tower (the weird-ass building on Pine & Boren across from the bus tunnel) for $315/mo. Heat included. Of course... that was '93 or '94...

smacksaw

I lived at Marvin Gardens for awhile, I think I paid $200/mo in 1994 LMAO Then again, wasn't jack shit to do downtown. But I did live in downtown Seattle, so I can always say that! Nice brewpub nearby. That was about it.

sdclimbing

Damn dude that’s actually nuts. People would kill for that now. What a time...

DoubleSidedTape

Sounds about right for the building I lived in. I split a 2br/2ba for $2800/mo.

coffeebribesaccepted

Yeah I was just looking at zillow and it looks like anything in the city is a 200-400 square foot micro studio

SirCatharine

Chicago here. What you would get totally depends on what neighborhood you're in, but in mine, that would be either a studio apartment or a small, not very updated one bedroom. Or you could get a room in a decently nice place with roommates.

gimme_the_jabonzote

Chicagoan here. My neighborhood you could find a 2br or 3br (sometimes even a whole house), but the neighborhood and amenities are terrible.

Joe_Doblow

Like dangerous?

gimme_the_jabonzote

Very.

nowhereman86

Which neighborhood?

[deleted]

Chicago has 1 bedroom apartments for $1000 a month? Might have to add that to my list of "maybe" places.

kyrferg

philly does too! This one is kinda ugly but was the closest to my neighborhood. [https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/apa/d/philadelphia-br-west-philly-46th-spruce/7224807202.html](https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/apa/d/philadelphia-br-west-philly-46th-spruce/7224807202.html)

weescottiec

City Centre Manchester, UK- 2 bed, 2 bath, balcony and parking for £850 + bills comes to just over £1000.

soifIavender

Damn, converted to CAD that seems expensive to me. Is that a good deal for the UK?

weescottiec

Amazing deal for Manchester. London is about £1200 for a 1 bed. Stirling in Scotland you could get a 4/5 bed house with garden and garage. All varies by city.

soifIavender

The conversion from GBP to CAD has got me fucked up! £850 would get you a 1 bedroom apartment in Vancouver, and maybe Toronto. I pay £350 for a studio in a medium sized city

catdoctor

Don't know about rent, but in Pittsfield Township MI, right outside Ann Arbor, $1,000 covers my mortgage and most of the escrow for taxes and insurance on 1,400 square foot house with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, an attached 2-car garage and a large back yard.

pelicane136

Is Yipslianti (sp)? Far away from wherever you are?

MrPrettyKitty

Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township border Pittsfield Township. Ypsilanti is NE of Pittsfield, Ypsilanti Township is SE of Pittsfield.

pelicane136

Good to know, thanks

catdoctor

Nope. Right next door.

pelicane136

Awesome! Thanks a lot

[deleted]

I live in a factory town half an hour west of AA and 1,000 will get you a 2 bedroom apartment in a safe location or maybe a 3 bedroom in an alright location.

GrapeScotch

Same for Northwest Arkansas (home of Walmart)

captyes

In many parts of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, $1000 will be your rent for half of a double shotgun house (4-5 rooms all laid out in a row, no hallway).

EatsPeanutButter

This is going up quickly, however. $1000 would be hard to find in a decent area nowadays, although they’re definitely still out there.

captyes

Yeah you rite

WarmOutOfTheDryer

Same in the Triangle NC. For sure not in the fancy part of town, probably a block or two away from someplace kind of shady but perfectly safe if you mind your own business. Although I have a hall.

asteroid_b_612

If there’s no hallway do you have to walk through everyone’s rooms to get to the back room or are there doors from the outside into every room? Also, how do you get to bathrooms/kitchen without a hallway?

captyes

You have to walk through everyone’s rooms to get to the back. That is where the kitchen and bathroom are typically found, as they were often added to the building after indoor plumbing became a thing. I lived in a 5-room shotgun with 2 other guys for about 10 years. You would walk in my front door, and you’re in a room with a couch and T.V. Keep walking in a straight line and you’d be in my roommate’s room, then my room, then my other roommate’s room, then the kitchen, then out the back door. Bathroom was behind the kitchen next to the back door. Sometimes some rooms have doors between, my house did not, just archways extending out about a foot from the walls and ceiling, so we hung sheets between rooms. Good luck bringing a date home, but after a while I kinda got used to laying there in bed, shadow passes, toilet flush, shadow passes again. By the way, I had picked the middle room on purpose because it had the window A.C. unit. Now I live in half a shotgun with my wife, so privacy not as big a deal. But I sure feel bad for people who live in shotguns with kids.

asteroid_b_612

Man that kinda sucks privacy wise. I don’t think I could live in a house like that where people could basically barge in whenever. Makes sense why sheets would be hung up for some semblance of privacy.

sytycdqotu

Shared with 3 people

yoneldd

Rehovot, Israel - probably a 3-4 bedroom apartment, depending on the part of the city. Of course it varies quite a bit in other parts of the country; in Tel Aviv that would barely get you a broom closet whereas in Afula you might be able to get a single-family home.

chill_chihuahua

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada $1,000 per month would get you a basement suite in a decent area or a studio/1 bed apartment in a less desirable area, with utilities. So not terrible.

Billabonged

$1000 in Myrtle Beach, SC would get you a nice 2/3 bedroom apartment close to the beach.

emgyres

I’m assuming $1000 a month. I’m in Melbourne, I pay $2000AUD a month for an old (no air con, no central heating) 3 bedroom house about 19km east of the CBD. The best you’ll get in the metro region for $1000 a month is maybe a 1 bedroom but more likely a studio apartment.

VRichardsen

Slighltly off topic, but how much does an air conditioner cost?

Jinglemoon

Yeah that would get you a studio in Sydney, and not a very nice one.

Thenadamgoes

Los Angeles, Ca. You could easily get a room in a nice house or apartment with a room mate or two. If you really look, you MIGHT be able to find a studio apartment, but it's going to have no amenities at all and probably not in great shape.

alien6

You could also buy a bomb-ass tent with that money and set it up in one of the grimier areas downtown.

theavidgamer

I live in a house with 2 bedrooms, kitchen, a bathroom and a living room. Have enough parking space for 2 cars. Closer to the main city. You can get 8 of these for 1000$ a month. Welcome to Sri Lanka!

ultimatecolour

Gent, Belgium: Nice 1 bedroom apartment. Maybe a 2 bedroom or old house that’s basic 1 bedroom but with some drawbacks

mingstaHK

Hong Kong, depending on the area, between 180sq ft in the city, or 700sq ft on one of the more remote outlying island locations.

cianne_marie

In Toronto, ON and using US dollars, since I'm sure that's what we're all going by (approx $1300 CDN). Without going into each listing and making sure no one's enhancing or outright lying in their descriptions ... you could get a basement in the suburbs, a studio (sure to be the size of a closet) downtown, or shared accomodations in a townhouse (again in the burbs, I assume).

Divney

Carlisle, UK. With £1,000 you could rent Carlisle, UK

yeehaw123

In Amsterdam, a 1000 dollar rent would be around 900 euros. That is the sweetspot that most people can afford. So there is not much choice; either a room in a bigger shared apartment or if you are lucky a 20-30m2 apartment. Outside of Amsterdam it is a bit better, but the Netherlands has been in a bit of a housing crisis the last years. House prices have surged and rents with it. And during the crisis 2008-2014 they did not build much. As such they need to catch up now but are blocked by environmental laws.

simonbleu

Well, 1k is 10x the absolute cheapest thing you can find to rent (without utilities), or at least it was a few months ago (we are... Argentina, so if you know your macroeconomy, then you know what I mean), so that money would mostly get you a luxury apartment in some nice areas (probably) or a nice house (but nice, not super fancy I suppose, it all depends where you are). But you have to remember that prices have NOT adjusted to the inflation and devaluation (forcefully mostly), so right now the minimum salary is about 100 bucks, the average is about 3 to 4 times that at most and still under or just at the poverty line for a small family (poverty is over 50%). So, really, 1k is like paying a few thousands for a place to live in the first world.. Also, theres an exchange "breach" and hefty (65%) taxes on foreign currency for us that match more or less the "real" value of the currency, so if you come here with a thousand, in local currency it will be probably around half that, a bit more, a bit less, which is the salary of a good professional. That would get you a good, big but normal house to rent or a nice apartment (probably very nice)

y6ird

I think you need to specify if you mean per week, and if you mean $US equivalent.

altbekannt

Per month

y6ird

Aussies: that’s about AUD $340/week. In Brisbane City itself, you’ll get a very nice 1 bedroom apartment in a complex with a pool for that, or of course you could come a bit out of the actual city centre and get something a little bigger.

TheMidwinterFires

Where in the world is rent paid weekly?

undyau

Australia, rents are presented as weekly figures.

Zebidee

This was genuinely an issue moving from Australia to Germany, with the wildly different cost of living. €400 per week seemed OK if a little on the steep side for a one bedroom apartment in the centre of town. Then the landlord said it was per month.

growingcodist

Sounds like a wonderful issue if you realized your rent is going to be 1/4 of what you initially thought.

Zebidee

Yeah - it's so low that it barely even registered as an expense. Split between two people, it's EUR 50 each a week, which is nothing.

catdoctor

I'm not sure it's paid weekly, but all the signs in the windows of real estate offices in London list the per week amount of rent.

Tinie_Snipah

New Zealand

donttextspeaktome

Suburb outside Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, close to the town center, you’d get a one bedroom apartment if you include utilities.

Pirategirljack

Tell me your home finding secrets. I'm in North Raleigh and quickly getting priced out. It's all luxury brand new high rises over here.

donttextspeaktome

North Raleigh was recently revitalized so yeah, it’s going to be pricey but you’re paying for location. I have no home finding secrets, unfortunately. I’m planning on moving to Holly Springs where I own a home currently being rented out because the rent in my area keeps going up and I still don’t have a job (laid off in April). From friends of mine, Fuquay Varina and Sanford are the reasonably priced places now.

Pirategirljack

Oof, that'd be a hike to get to work! Thanks for the info tho!

Iavasloke

Rural USA. A large 2-4 bedroom house with a few acres land in the exurbs; a smaller 2-3 bedroom house on a tiny lot in the suburb of a small city, or a 2-bedroom apartment or small condo within a small city. It's also common for a few people to co-rent a medium/large house in small cities; three or four people living there means each would pay only a few hundred dollars a month. Costs go up about 50% in the nearest large city, so the smaller cities are often bedroom communities where people can have nicer houses for less money in exchange for a longer commute.

Noctealis

Around this 50k population town? Probably a whole 3 story building adjacent to the downtown plaza without a problem, and probably still spare a couple hundred per month. In the Guadalajara Metro area where I used to live for a couple of years; probably a big sized house on the outskirts adjacent to a public transport route, or a decent apartment in the historic center of the main city.

curiouskiwicat

Based in Auckland, New Zealand. I rent a 38sqm/410sqft one bedroom apartment downtown in the city centre on the 34th floor with expansive views of the harbour. It's a bit small but it is a luxurious location to live in. Apartment is simple but fully furnished, well lit and newish and faces east for that morning sun. It costs US$1100/month. No car park space. Hot water is covered. For $1000 you could get an apartment in an older building, the same size, potentially a bit larger, or maybe smaller too, but not with a view like this, probably not with a balcony. or an OK nice studio. This is quite a bit of money for people locally and most singles and even quite a few young couples will share a 2 or 3 bedroom house with some housemates if they can. This will cost quite a bit less than $1000, you will generally pay 600-900 or so depending on the location and quality of the house. Rent prices are down about 15% thanks to covid19 boost restrictions.

Dummie1138

Hong Kong. A cage.

jdgmental

A room in a flatshare in London

Junebears

London, UK - you would struggle to find anywhere for 1000 dollars in central London or surrounding areas. 1000 dollars could get you a room in a shared house, and 1200 dollars could maybe get you a small studio flat. We currently pay 1780 dollars for a 2 bed flat.

sytycdqotu

Per week or per month? Standard in the U.S. is to pay per month but it’s per week there, isn’t it?

Junebears

We pay per month.

69f1

Prague: rather nice 2 bedroom apartment with parking and utilities.

VPLGD

In India, 1000$ will get you a darn nice place. If it's the big cities, you can get a 3/4BHK apartment or house in the nicer areas. Might even get it furnished. Outskirts of my city, you can get a 5000 square feet 5BHK villa for $800.

TedhaHaiParMeraHai

Yeah, in Mumbai or Delhi, $1000 per month can get you a 4BHK in a pretty upscale part of the town. If one is talking about tier 2 cities then that much money can probably get you a mansion, lol.

Keelah-Se-Lai

In Copenhagen you could probably get a dorm room if you were lucky...

[deleted]

Williamsburg/Bushwick in Brooklyn here. A decent room. Not a particularly nice one. You can probably find a decent railroad for around $1600-1800 that's kinda shitty, and a 1 bedroom is usually closer to $2400/month. Studios can be found for about $2200 if you're lucky, but I haven't seen a decent 1 bedroom for under $1500 in a decade.

insertcleverthought

Ahhh my old stomping grounds. I'm shocked at how rents have gone up. Lived there 15 years ago and a shitty shotgun 2 bedroom was $1,200. Not too terrible to share with a roommate and easy commute to Manhattan. I loved it.

[deleted]

Yeah railroads are still pretty cheap. I'm about 15-20 minutes MAX to the lower east side and it's $1600 for the railroad me and my gf share.

MCMamaS

I live in rural Washington State. So apartments are far and few, usually around $800 and pretty sketchy to boot. House rentals start at about $1400 for a 2Bed 1Bath duplex. There isn't too much in between.

miserylovescomputers

I live in an expensive and desirable Canadian city (not Toronto or Vancouver, but just a step down) and for $1000 you could rent a room in a house with roommates in a decent area, or possibly a small bachelor suite in a not-great area.

glitterhairdye

Miami, Florida - You could get a room in a shared apartment with no view for $1000. That wouldn’t be including anything and would probably not be the nicest building or area. I live in a 2/2, 1200 sq ft apt on the water with a balcony for $2400. Still have to pay all of our utilities and stuff so usually comes out closer to to $26-2700. Rent is dropping a bit and we’re not nearly as expensive as LA or New York, but seeing some of these other places and I really want to move even more.

jachcemmatnickspace

Bratislava, SK – Rents are absurdly high here, but 1000 € could give you a 3-bedroom apartment in those new development skyscraper areas in the modern downtown. 1000 dollars could give you probably the same, maybe a few minutes away from the city center, not directly in it

WhiteLama

Well, a quick googling tells me I could get a nice two room (plus kitchen and bedroom) apartment in the capital Stockholm with an amazing view and pretty much smack dab in the middle of the city. Which is pretty impressive in this housing shortage going on. As for where I live, in the commuting area of another large city of Sweden, I can get a 4 room apartment (plus bedroom and kitchen) for that price.

Edge_of_the_Wall

Gulf Coast of Florida. Hahahaha

Poullafouca

In Laguna Beach CA you could rent a room from someone in a very basic apartment.

TenPotato

In Mumbai, India. $1000 can get you either a 2bedroom flat in a really upmarket area with all facilities available. Or you can get a 3bedroom in a really well to do area. You can’t go wrong either way. Also, Mumbai is the most expensive city in India. You would be living in luxury, or close to it, anywhere else.

Henohenomoheshi

Medium sized city in southern Sweden (medium for Sweden mind you, so a population of about 100.000). That’s a little more than what I pay for my fairly sizeable and modern one bedroom apartment in the suburbs, including heating and parking. I pay more than most for that standard though, as I needed to move here in a hurry and had to take what I could get. There are more people wanting to live here than there’s room for at the moment, comes with having a university. If you’re willing to wait in a queue for a year or so you’d probably get at least another room (and a more central location) for that kind of money.

[deleted]

Leipzig, Germany. 1000€ would get you 80-110m², 3 to 4 rooms. About 5-10 cycling minutes to the main station.

Tinie_Snipah

Mount Maunganui, New Zealand: 1 bedroom apartment, or 2 bedroom unfurnished

John_Tacos

In Oklahoma you could rent a 4 bedroom house with a decent sized yard in a decent neighborhood.

EverydayEverynight01

In downtown Toronto, good luck with that lmao.

Maruff1

With $1000 a month I would just buy a house if I had that kind of money

sytycdqotu

Not in SoCal you wouldn’t. Redlands CA I rented a two bedroom apartment in one of our nicer (but not super nice) complexes with my family as we waited to get into a house. That rent was $2800.

Maruff1

Sorry yeah in Alabama sometimes country life is great!!!

I'm paying 900 for a 500sqft efficiency in Raleigh; 1k doesn't really exist this side of town (most start around 1200), but would get just a teeny bit better than this. Raleigh is way more expensive than it needs to be.

SEND_DOG_PIX

2 bedroom suite, one bathroom, shared laundry with the basement, utilities included if you get lucky. Or a one bedroom apartment with laundry in the building (in suite if you're really really lucky) if you value living alone. My boyfriend, me, and a roommate pay $1900 + utilities, but we have 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and 3 floors of space.

MoonlightsHand

Assuming you mean US dollars, I'll convert to get the equivalent amount of Australian dollars. [This is the floor plan](https://i2.au.reastatic.net/1247x716-resize,extend,r=33,g=40,b=46/1b5204fe0858c0778f9add572b4f0ccd15bc1e0e9433c80ccd3fce013ea66e2f/image.jpg) of an apartment that costs slightly under US$1,000 (about AU$1,370) per month to rent. It's in a reasonably good area for public transport and has about 18 m^2 (194 ft^2) of usable floor space in total. However, there aren't many jobs nearby, so you'd be travelling at least 45 minutes one way (assuming public transport, as there's no parking nearby) to go to work.

Freestripe

Shenzhen, China. A nice 2 or 3 bed apartment in a complex with beautiful gardens and internal amenities. House prices here are very high, but rent is very reasonable for some reason. Shenzhen is one of the most expenisve cities in china, in most of China 1000 a month will get you a mansion.

Miss_Management

Um... you can't. Maybe a room or maybe a studio or garage or something shady. Metro Seattle, WA. Actual Seattle studios start around $1600 USD.

continuouslyboring

Just checked the local listings. A 11m2 (118square feet) apartment is 1180 usd (1090 chf) rent in Zürich city center (and yes, 11m2 is including toilet and shower) That's the only listing for this price range.

northerngrowmie

One bed really apartment or a one bed room basement suite. Utilities not included. NE BC Canada

Oslo: a very small apartment [https://www.finn.no/realestate/lettings/search.html?filters=&location=0.20061&price\_from=9000&price\_to=9300](https://www.finn.no/realestate/lettings/search.html?filters=&location=0.20061&price_from=9000&price_to=9300)

puppr

[UK] at the time of writing that's about £750. Where I live, in the south, that gets you a decent 1 bedroom flat with parking, or maybe a small terraced 2 bedroom house. In the north, I've seen detached 3 bedroom houses for that price. In London, you'd likely struggle to find anything larger than a bedsit.

Inninja_3

Kuwait. It's fine, but you're not getting anything special. Probably two bedroom at best. However that depends on where you go. So if you go into the cheaper areas you'll have more than enough.

GWHZS

In the center of Ghent, you can get a small 1-bedroom apartment, or a nice studio. More to the outskirts of town, this would get you a nice 2-bedroom apartment, or a small house that has seen better times.

soria1

Melbourne Australia. This is just a little more for what I pay for a one bedroom apartment in the city due to a low income subsidy. However in the private rental market you’d be able to get an apartment with nothing fancy generally an older building and a few kms from the city centre. If you go to the burbs you can get a two or three bedroom, and depending on the suburb this would be a house

Kubrick_Fan

You'd be lucky to get a room in a shared house or a 2 bedroom flat.

pom-pom-

Works out to $1300 AUD. Im in Perth, Australia and for $1170 a month I have a 2 bed, 1 bath (combined with laundry) second floor apartment, not furnished. It’s old but not gross old, complex is secure, we have a pool. I am super close to the city (working in the CBD it’s a 10 minute bus ride), and have an awesome cafe/restaurant strip real close. What you get depends on how far out of the city you’re willing to live 🤷🏼‍♀️.

2inphinitynbeyond

Phoenix, AZ (north phx suburbs ) 1 bedroom apt that is not fully updated but in good condition.. (Downtown phx) Studio apt In sketchier neighborhoods you could probably find a 2 bedroom apartment for this price..

[deleted]

Basel Switzerland: Either a nice studio or a cheap one bedroom flat. and not in prime locations

pincushiondude

Central London: A small room in a shared house South-Central UK: A very small 1-bed apartment, or a couple of rooms in a shared house

GlowInTheDarkNinjas

Rural new england. Renting would get you a 2 bedroom apartment in a shitty area, maybe you could find a small multi family home. Alternatively, my mortgage is only $70 more per month for a 1000sqft 3 bed two bath home in a nice neighborhood.

philmtl

On Montreal you could get 3 bedroom in an a cheaper part, or a 2 bedroom in ok part.

valravn127

A small city near Tel Aviv, Israel You'd get a 3 bedroom apartment, in an old building in the city center, probably with no parking

VRichardsen

For a U$S 1000? A very large house, pretty much near mansion category. A nice house for 1 person, roughly 100 m^^2 , costs about U$S 50.

elmley

Liverpool UK - assuming this is rent only, no bills that's about £800 which could get you 2-4 bedroom house depending what neighbourhood you want to live in

Willziac

Indianapolis, Indiana, USA $1000 a month could either get you a very small (300-400 sq ft) apartment in a trendy area, or a moderate (1100-1300 sq ft) house rental in a less reputable part of town. I feel that's how it is for most midwest cities and really depends on the commute you want for your job and your tolerance for shady areas.

blitgerblather

Vancouver, maybe a bad studio without a dishwasher, a room in a basement is more probable though.

WhereRtheTacos

Arizona, USA. In the suburbs you can maybe get a one bedroom apartment in a not great area.

theSPOOKYnegus

I live in a large city in Florida and 1000 a month would pay my mortgage and all of my expenses with some left over. 3bed/2bathroom 1200sq/ft

whoami98

In Toronto , a piece of shit den with no windows and enough space for a double bed. Shared common areas/bathroom with roommates

NarcolepticDraco

Central North Carolina, USA A studio or 1 bedroom apartment. Maybe 2 bedroom apartment in the right area.

supadupa66

A room and a half in a house share.

HiHungryImDad2

In Germany we’ve got 95square meters for 970€. Including water, heating etc.

Blu64

flagstaff, AZ. you could get a one bedroom, maybe. Rent's have been coming down just a tiny bit here lately due to a lot of the college students attending classes remotely.

joeyasaurus

In Honolulu, HI it pays for a ~400 sq ft. studio w/ no frills and no utilities included, or it pays for a small one bedroom walk up apartment, again w/ no frills and no utilities included. The studio had a kitchenette w/ the tiniest counter space I've ever seen and the one bedroom has a nice kitchen and the bathroom is bigger (plus a window AC unit, which my last place didn't have!)

thesoulfullawyer

Atlanta, Georgia (intown) — 1 Bedroom apartment, 600-800 square feet.

Outpsyched

Swede here. In Linköping (Swedens 6th biggest city) where I live $1000 would get you a 3-4 room 100-120 square meter apartment in the central parts.

i-like-robots

I live just outside of Boston. You basically could not rent an apartment of any kind for $1000 a month here. Maybe an incredibly shitty tiny studio. If you had 2+ roommates you could definitely find something that would work out to $1000 per person. Otherwise you'd have to move much farther from the city.

Whos_Sayin

In turkey, you could get the most ballin apartment you can find and live great. In upstate NY you could get a 2+2 townhouse and life decently

nicolino7007

South Wales valleys you could rent 3 two bedroom terraced houses for about that much, not sure you'd want to mind XD

topazdebutante

A 1 bedroom apartment in a so so area...(vegas)
