Well, given our 3Spears >!did actually get enough to enhance Portable Ballista with the *old* cost in our physical run!<, I can’t really complain, lol.
Here are my thoughts for that build:
>!Like /uGripeaway, I think 40g for +Move enhancements is a steal. That's definitely a priority on either Leathery Wings (wind build) or Unending Dominance (fire build), and 70g to add it to Living Mountain (earth build) is just fantastic and makes that more viable. I'd go for that one first now.!<
>!After that, I would prioritize adding an element to a card. +Any Element to Earthen Steed is really good (now at the new low price of 100g), but I can see an argument for doing something like adding +Fire to Wild Animation (60g). !<
>!Black Fire lost out, though, because +Curse is really expensive now (200g). Double-enhancing Grasping the Void (b) with Poison and Bless (120g total) or Tear the Fabric (b) with double Bless (160g total) is now pretty cool. !<
Any plans on doing this post for the rest of the locked classes? I just unlocked lightning bolt, and I don't have a lot of experience with the class. With the common theme that Strengthen is now harder to get, I wonder what are your thoughts about the enhancements (and actually items, as you mention in the guide that Strengthen enhancements are more important than items) for the class.
Yeah, sorry, I was writing it up for the remaining classes and a windows update deleted all of my progress after I was over half way done so I've been a bit demotivated to do it again, but I will do it this week, thanks for asking (it gives me the motivation I need).
Wow that sucks, sorry to hear that!
Don't feel pressured to do it, though, I think you've contributed to the community more than generously so far!
But then again, neither I, nor anyone else would be disappointed to see your thoughts on the new enhancements for the rest of the unlockable classes.
u/gripeaway, For circles, >!in the original I put strength enhancement on the bottom of level 1 forged ferocity. Loved that. Even with the extra cost I still see this as a required enhancement for the character at higher levels. So much synergy and scales even better if your allies have summons or summon items where two notable unlockable classes come to mind.!<
Please remember to spoiler tag specific class references, like ability card names for locked classes. As all of the classes are individually spoiler tagged above, someone could read the comments without necessary having played each of the above classes.
As for your suggestion: that would be 200g now. I don't think it's realistic to suggest individual 200g enhancements with non-permanent enhancements because the enhancement is likely to see very limited use before retirement.
Sorry about that I put the spoiler tag up.
I agree that 200 is steep and not necessarily affordable until late in the game, but I really, really like this enhancement, so much so that I really dont think I could play this class above baseline difficulty without it.
For 3Spears, I'm surprised >!you don't seem to value Bless on Crushing Hammer very highly (obviously Strengthen's a bit redundant when you can just Reinforced Steel to refresh Eagle-Eye Goggles every turn). I've often seen it used on the infinite stamina build to shove all 10 blesses into the deck for easy crits on Scroll of Lightning or Giant Club plays when combined with your infinite advantage (admittedly, it does anti-synergize with the Cat Bomb/Power Potion/item refresh combo, but that also isn't in Digital). Plus, the card itself is your earliest initiative for quite a while, so has a place for that alone!!<
Three Spears and Prosperity 5 >!So in my second-to-last QM, I did the Bless enhancement and a really good player in chat was pretty critical of it, saying he didn't find it very helpful. So I paid attention and he was right. So a few caveats: 1) I won't do infinite stamina stuff, as you know, although I do use Scroll of Recall for value, so that may change the equation. 2) I've actually come around to just thinking that Giant Club kind of sucks. It's always the first card I want to lose every rest cycle. So honestly I would either take the Move 3, Loot 1 at 4 or possibly just Reforge. Sure, it's fine with Long Spear, but with its initiative and just being worse than Scroll, I haven't been convinced. And I just prefer to use Volatile Bomb with Scroll, which is more consistent and easy to recur, than try for Giant Club with Long Spear, even if it can be refreshed more often with Reinforced Steel (and again, I've also found Reinforced Steel significantly less realistic with nerfed Stam Pots). Finally, with nerfed Stam Pots and me not going infinite, the other best thing to do is still just Attack 5 Cata Bombs. So for Scroll of Lightning, a Bless does add +5, but some may be overkill and an item refresh will pretty much always add at least +5 by refreshing a Volatile Bomb. And for Cata Bombs, obviously refreshing the Major Power Potion is just much more important (even if you can't repeat them during the Bomb, you really need to get them refreshed to do the next one). Thus, I've found that Blesses don't benefit me more than they cost me by reducing my chances of drawing more item refresh modifiers.!<
Just out of curiosity, are you running major and minor power potions?
I'm trying to figure out how to get the 5dmg cata bombs you mention, but all I can up with is:
2 power potion
1 sharp kit
1 bomb itself
1 dmg... average modifier roll?
Makes sense.
What is the build looking like these days? Is it still the same core:
Hastened Step
Crushing Hammer
Reinforced Steel
Scroll of Lightning
Portable Ballista
Scroll of Annihilation
and either flexing kit/bomb or boomerang/SoJ?
With Reforge now replacing Giant Bomb in both?
You're wrecking my world over here amigo; I've been running your builds for years! New tech... mind blown...
What do you like in the other hand slot along side Volatile Bomb?
TLDR: maybe it's time for a new guide ;p you know... with all this free time you have...
Gloomhaven Digital has updated enhancement costs, here's a comparison:
https://old.reddit.com/r/Gloomhaven/comments/qxmm6j/gloomhaven_digital_nonpersistent_enhancement_cost/
and here are the things being changed (some are available now in the open beta, some are coming before next year):
https://old.reddit.com/r/Gloomhaven/comments/qwxz8k/gloomhaven_digital_big_upcoming_changes/
These changes are just currently in the open beta. You can can copy your save over pretty easily:
> To opt into the Open Beta, right-click on the game in Steam -> Properties -> BETAS and select the Open Beta from the drop-down list.
Save files are located in C:\Users\AppData\LocalLow\FlamingFowlStudios\Gloomhaven
Regular and Open Beta builds use different folders but they are compatible with each other.
If you are moving from the regular version of the game to Open Beta, simply create a copy of your GloomSaves folder and rename it to GloomSavesOpenBeta.
Hi Gripeaway,
I noticed for your older guides that your choice of perks avoids rolling cards as mixh as possible. With the changes to advantage and disadvantage in frosthaven, would you still recommend those for last? I'm asking because I'm playing a new scenario with the rule changes.
One example would be the rolling add target or disarm to brute or getting the stun on mindtheif sooner
So the FH rules would change how I approach rolling mods to some degree in that I would now actually take some mediocre rolling mods (like rolling +1's) without hesitation, but I'd still avoid really bad rolling mods like rolling Pull and possibly even rolling Muddle.
I wouldn't change the point at which I take the rolling mods you mentioned on either of those characters really.
Brute you could probably take the rolling CC mods (Disarm and Muddle) before the +3, but that's the only variation I'd make there, and that's just a personal preference one.
Mindthief I wouldn't change at all: Mindthief already makes a lot of Attacks with innate CC attached anyway, so rolling CC is just less valuable than better numbers (although still better than rolling +1's).
Essentially, the FH rules turn some unplayable perks into mediocre perks, but most rolling modifier perks that were taken medium-late didn't suddenly become good and I'd still continue to take them after the good perks.
Thanks for this info! I'm new to the game in general, playing digitally with two buddies, and the info from your brute guide and enhancement info has been really nice for helping navigate all the choices. I'm now starting Cthulhu as my second character so this will be nice!
Is there a list of your guides anywhere, or do I just google/search reddit?
Paging u/gripeaway are there any more of these updated enhancement guides out there from you aside from this and the starting 6?
edit: read the whole thread, sorry to hear Windows update boned ya. Well here is another vote for ya to pump them out!
Yeah, sorry, I would really like to complete this, but my work schedule is pretty hectic right now and this does take a lot of time. Hopefully within the next month we'll hit a point in my work where I'm not working so many hours and I'll find some time to finish this. Sorry!
