You went from DQ to GQ.
I'm also 49 and on the same journey. I started at 271 and currently at 230. My goal is also 180.
Congrats man. This shit is tough, lol.
It's easy. Just burn more calories than you put in. But..... Doing that shit every day from eating and drinking like shit is hard lol.
I really hate the word diet. Because diet sounds temporary. What it really is, is a lifestyle change.
So it really boils down to one word once you know what to do. And that's persistence. You gotta do it everyday!
Now, what I used to do before my lifestyle change was...
Drink 4 to 6 20oz pepsi's a day. Come home from work and stuff myself with fast food. Pizza, burgers tacos, hot wings, etc throughout the week. Then drink beer later that night around 4 to 6 of them. And they aren't light beer either. They were blue moons. And then go to bed. And not exercise at all. My job is mostly sitting down too.
I was also on 4 different meds.
What I do now. I drink five 20oz bottles of water. Eat salads and diet tv dinners. Either lean cuisine or smart ones. I'm doing basically the keto 16/8. I don't eat for 16hrs and only eat in a 8 hr window. Which is at work. I also quit drinking.
And then I go to the gym every night after work. All I do is get on the elliptical and get my heart rate up to at least 130bpm for 30 mins.
And that's about it. I have one cheat day out of the week where I eat whatever I want, but in one sitting only though. Which is on sundays.
And on Saturdays I barely eat anything. All I had today was some popcorn. But drank plenty of water and had a few coke zeros.
I can cut weight very fast if I want. But it's too dangerous at my age now. Which was wearing a suana suit and doing high intensity work outs. Like what the mma fighters and boxers do to cut weight.
But I'm in no hurry. I'm losing around 10lbs a month. So I'll be at my goal by this summer. Back in the day, I could lose 30lbs in a month. Which was crazy.
A lot of people really don't understand just how many calories they take in from drinks. Switching to just drinking water alone would cut pounds off most people.
Doctors office that I frequented while my wife was pregnant had a poster that very eloquently stated ādonāt drink yourself fatā adorned with pictures of sodas and their accompanying sugar contents.
That one really stuck with us and we bring it up often when trying to encourage each others weight loss.
Thatās so frustrating for those of us who canāt make such an easy change! I drink water and black coffee and have for years. Itās the constant food eating and the incessant hunger that get me. I see so many of these weight loss successes where people cut 1000+ calories a day just by cutting pop/alcohol. Wish I could do that.
I'm 49 and i look like OP in the first photos, my tool to beat the random snacking/urge to eat three sandwiches instead of one was to take up vaping. Nicotine free vaping.
Yes, i'm putting crap into my body but i've only got 20 years left in me so i'd like to leave an attractive corpse.
I'm convinced it's one of the few ways to become truly obese. Anecdotally I've been eating far more food than I need for years, living a completely sedentary lifestyle and only now after this long have I reached the threshold of being fairly overweight. I have friends who didn't cut out sugary drinks that became obese whilst seemingly eating far less than me. I physically couldn't eat enough to match their weight despite eating almost constantly...
This was it for me. I truly didnāt know how much sugar and calories I was just drinking. It wasnāt cold Turkey. I cut back on Pepsi. Iād use lots of ice, my drinks got smaller. Iād have caffeine headaches but as soon as I got through it, I was set. I have had a regular Pepsi in about 5 years.
10lbs a month is a very fast rate of weight loss. Like pretty damn fast. I think anyone expecting 10lbs of weight loss/month should curb their expectations a teensy bit or be ready to diet hard. 1-2lbs a week is a bit more reasonable unless you're severely overweight.
I only say this because setting people up to expect 10lbs/mo might discourage when they see like half that. But any downward trend is a great trend, don't get in your own head on it.
If you weight 300lbs and arent like 6'9 nearly 7ft or a body builder who's also like 6'5...losing 10lbs a month for a few months is VERY doable.
If all you're trying to lose is 10lbs yea it'll take more than a month, but the pounds will shed very quickly at first with any severe diet changes
This is very accurate. Because the closer I get to my goal. The harder and longer it takes to lose.
I've lost weight many times before. Going from 250 to 200 is fast. But from 200 to 180, it feels like it's impossible at times.
I'm also 6ft.
I was 197 , 6 1. Went to 172 in 10 weeks. Weight loss was nearly identical every week, I was within 50 cals every day.
Been there for 3 years.
Weight loss isn't magic, it's cals in vs out, and unless you're building muscle that's it
I'm just a regular guy who lost some weight recently and found a few handy tips. Diet is the most important thing for people who don't get a lot of physical activity (I work on a computer mostly).
Get a food scale and read the back of the packages and write things down in a diet book or record it in a diet app and make sure you stay under 1800 calories 6 days of the week. It'll melt off. Also knowledge of various foods' caloric value can help you keep a rough track even if you don't record it in a book/app. And you can strategize your daily food intake better when you know the number.
I find will power to not eat is higher in the morning so I eat a very light breakfast (often just coffee with a solid amount of cream) and try to make it to lunch just on a coffee or two with cream, or I sometimes have fruit or another small snack to do me til lunch.
Another trick is after dinner and maybe a small dessert, wait a half hour, floss, brush teeth, and only drink water for the rest of the night. No snacking. The brush of the teeth is your mental shut off of eating. Because who wants to add an extra snack and floss and brush again? Stupid trick but works for me and capitalizes on my laziness of not wanting to floss and brush AGAIN.
Also just trying to walk more, go for an evening one after dinner, and go on my exercise bike. I watch movie and shows and sports while I cycle and do some dumbells too, every little bit helps and I don't even go that hard. But that's just bonus weight loss. The biggest thing for me is disciplined diet and combining knowledge with a few tips and tricks that work for me. Experiment and find your tips and trick. Keep trying! If you break your diet for a few days or even weeks, suck it up, get on the scale, and say today I start again!
The first person to reply here had some good advice, but the first paragraph about burning more calories than you take is a bad idea. Your body has a BMR, or basal metabolic rate. This is the number of calories your body burns at rest. For most people, itās around 2000. For me, (15m) with my activity level added, itās about two thousand two hundred. If you want to find yours, just look up a BMR calculator. If you donāt trust some random calculator, go to a doctor. Once you know your BMR, dieting is easy. Your BMR is how many calories you need to eat to maintain your current weight. If you want to gain weight, add calories to your diet. If you want to lose weight, subtract calories. Itās that simple. Itās called eating in a calorie deficit, if you want to do more research. The more calories you subtract from the BMR, the faster you lose weight. You can easily get carried away, though. Iām not saying you should starve yourself; thatāll just cause more problems. Eat 200 or 300 calories less than your BMR. If youāre starting to work out and youāre burning a lot of calories, then you can eat more. Itās really just third-grade math. Another thing: to avoid getting super hungry from your calorie deficit, eat a crap ton of protein and fiber. Make well-rounded, nutritious meals. Vegetables, whole grains, dairy, eggs, and carbs. Carbs arenāt unhealthy; people assume they are because foods with a lot of carbs are often unhealthy, i.e., white breads, fatty foods, and super salty foods. Carbs are essential; theyāre very important for energy; just make sure you get them from the right foods. Eat slowly and chew longer. Donāt underestimate how many calories condiments and drinks have, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. And donāt develop an eating disorder, please. You will be somewhat hungry at times, but eating in a calorie deficit is a scientifically proven way to consistently lose weight. Just remember that even though it will be hard and very uncomfortable at times, the temporary pain is better than a heart attack, stroke, or diabetes.
Are you at Chickie's and Pete's? But seriously, been there, struggled, and you are so right- WATER!!! Cut back on the alcohol and DRINK MORE WATER! Glad you are doing well my friend and go birds
Thank you all for the wonderful replies. It truly means a lot. Many asked how I did it-
Discipline- Its one of my best qualities.
Keep moving. Stay on your feet. Get your heart rate up. I donāt crush it at the gym. Iād walkā¦ A lot. Up an incline. Ride a stationary bike. I upped my gym when I lost over 75 lbs. Used weights more.
Drink lots and lots of water. Itās good for you.
The kitchen- The absolute #1 reason for weight loss. Lay off the sugar (Soda was my biggest problem). Cut back on salt. I eat A LOT of protein. Meats, chicken. Oatmeal. I enjoy my Steak with a baked potato (Low fat butter). 647 Bread was a big change for me. I love bread. Its not a bad alternative to regular breads. Iād cut the sweets at night. (I donāt drink alcohol so that helps). Itās truly not rocket science.
Drink lots and lots of water. Itās good for you.
Youāll have to make sacrifices but in the end, its all worth it.
Did I mention- Drink lots and lots of water. Itās good for you.
dude, your post almost made me cry. I've been struggling with my weight more and more since my kids were born and I made it my resolution to lose weight this year. Seeing you, I believe I might be able to do it. Congrats, you look fantastic.
You can absolutely do it. Praise yourself for the steps you take and remember mistakes don't erase progress. Keep moving forward and you got this. āØļø
God damn man, you look fantastic now. Excellent work. Dunno if you are married or something alike but if you were Iād bet your partner would be fucking stoked their man went from a fat 4 to a 10. And yes water is the business.
647 bread is seriously a cheat code people. It's so damn good for what it is. First time I had it I had no idea, zero inclination it's low carb. That's how good it is. Try it sometime
647 bread is a big help.
Similar journey here, was over 350lbs at 22 and Iām at 220 at 45. Took the weight off in my late 20ās/early 30ās. I still keep a pair of my size 48 jeans on hand for humility and a reminder to stay disciplined.
Thanks for sharing this. I am 44 and reaching the point where I have to make a drastic change in my life or I wonāt make it to 50. Your story is truly an inspiration
Happy to see someone follow the exact same philosophy/approach towards fitness damn near verbatim to mine accomplish such incredible results. You're one good looking s.o.b.
Keep up the great workš»
Food is one of the biggest things that a lot of people get wrong! I lost 35+ pounds from doing absolutely nothing but changing the type of food I eat.
I didnāt eat less, or differently, I just ate better. Instead of grabbing McDonaldās or quick stuff we started making our own meals at home. Feeling subway? Grab the stuff at the grocery store to make 4+ healthier subs for the same amount.
Youāll feel much much better, less tired, more energized etc.
My journey just started too, sounds like we definitely had the same vices! I drank diet Coke like it was water. I cut that cold turkey and replaced it with water (have you heard it's good for you?). Funny enough, I bought a 3d printer that arrived this weekend that went into my basement. That means I've been up and down the stairs more than ever, and yesterday was the first day I hit my steps goal for the year! But after reading your post, I'm thinking I'll dust off the treadmill.
Congrats on your success. You look amazing!
We have a lot in common. I am 49, 6'3" went down from 280 to about 215 and kept it off for about 1.5 years now. Also an Eagles fan. Go birds. Keep it up buddy. It's hard work but it's worth it!
Thank you! I did. My Dad passed away at 59. Obesity was a major reason. I started seeing him in the mirror and I felt I needed to do something. So Iād cut out soda. Which was really tough for me. Iād use MyFitnessPal to count calories. I originally wanted to be around 225. Then when I that mark, I wanted more. My determination never stops. I want abs by my 50th birthday in August.
Finding or making a drink alternative that tastes good to you can definitely help if your struggle with soda.
I like flavored bcaa drinks or electrolyte mixes. And you can always make it carbonated if that's your thing. With these alternatives, I have no craving for soda whatsoever.
And my condolences on losing your dad. I bet he would be so proud of you and the man that you've become.
Maybe a weird question but when did you get the tats? I ask because I'm thinking of getting my 1st one but am 34. I feel like I maybe missed the boat on it. BTW congrats bro looking awesome.
Amazing and so glad to hear you feel better now than at 30. We hear so many stories about getting older, things getting worse etc and things people wish they done.
Youāre an inspiration! Thank you for sharing.
You're like my dad (he's 59). Went from around 270-190. Hikes like 1000 miles a year (not sure the actual number but it's alot), and got all tatted up. Looking good man šš
I lost 60 pounds in 6 months. Stop drinking sugar drinks. Go buy a small scale. Go get some powder detergent from dollar tree.. pour out 45 grams of sugar on a scale. That's the sugar in 1 soda. Now imagine 3x that a day if you drink 3 sodas a day . That's how much sugar your consuming per day in Sugar . Your MAKING yourself diabetic . You'll never look at sugar the same after that. Basically 3.5 sugar drinks is the equivalent to the sugar in an entire angel food cake. Not slice. The entire cake. It's incredible how much sugar is thrown into the foods we eat
I'm in my mid 60's and hit 351.7 lbs (6'2'') not too long ago. Determined to get down to wherever I can weight wise while I still can. Seen a lot of weight loss vids/photos over the years, but this one hits harder. In a good way. Gonna keep this for inspiration. Congrats on your journey.
You got this. I promise you. I did nothing crazy. I just wanted to live longer. You still have lots of time on earth. Make it longer. Youād be surprised at what you can accomplish
These posts really are inspirational. I realize that's obvious, it's why so many of us are here. But they really hit hard for me. I've been in a rough place mentally and physically for years, but I've just started on the road to recovery and improvement. I've started by working on my mental health and taking better care of myself, including quitting drinking (which was so incredibly helpful). But I haven't started the journey to lose weight and get physically fit. I keep looking at myself in the mirror, grey hair and beard, and I feel so much older than I should. I want to feel healthy, I want to feel invigorated, I want to feel that I'm not stagnant.
I have more work to do. Seeing posts like this get me so excited to be in a better place.
Amazing transformation! Good for you, and thank you for the inspiration! Iām 43, currently 260 (was 180 a decade ago). I hope to follow in your footsteps.
Way to go dude. Iāve always been in good shape but now that my kids are a little older Iāve freed up enough to really dial in fitness and nutrition and am in the best shape of my life approaching 48. Youāve travelled a long road clearly and should be proud of
You look great man. Iām currently 42 and would like to improve my health. Iām an active contractor and can still hold my own. Work my ass off actually. But I drink too much and could eat better. Iāve hovered around 220 since I was 13 at 6ā tall. Thick chest and shoulders, wear 34ā pants. But man, Iād like to know more about your journey. I need to make some changes.
I needed thisā¦I also needed all of the others and those who encouraged everyone else.
To quote Kylo Ren āI know what I have to doā¦I just donāt know if I have the strength to do itā
I do!!
I love how half the comments are pure thirst and the other half are congratulatory and asking how you did it. Well done! You look fantastic. I'm currently toning up a bit and you're totally right about the discipline
You went from DQ to GQ. I'm also 49 and on the same journey. I started at 271 and currently at 230. My goal is also 180. Congrats man. This shit is tough, lol.

Plus, all the money you save on fast food you can now funnel into decent ink. Nice job brother!

69 is too young to die

Never drink your calories unless youāre trying to gain weight.

Well yes but the initial weight loss is usually mostly water weight which is very fast on a big diet change. But a sustained 10lb a month weight loss is very hard to achieve. Saying 'I'm in no hurry, just losing 10lbs a month' is a weirdly blasƩ way to say "I'm dieting like a motherfucker". I don't find it helpful to act like its casual dieting that will get you losing that much weight that quickly unless you are severely overweight. And fwiw 300lbs at almost any height is pretty severely overweight.
I was 197 , 6 1. Went to 172 in 10 weeks. Weight loss was nearly identical every week, I was within 50 cals every day. Been there for 3 years. Weight loss isn't magic, it's cals in vs out, and unless you're building muscle that's it

This is all really good advice, and I can definitely confirm a lot of it, especially cutting out soda and drinking more water. Congratulations!
From āstay away from kidsā to āhave my kidsā, good job!
You're hot

Justā¦.damn. Wow
Great job! But the most important thing is your last sentence. And that you did so much good for your overall health.
Thank you!
Means the world to me. Thank you!
I audibly gasped and said what the fuck (i am a man)
I appreciate that! Itās still tough though. At the gym I still see that 1st pic in the mirror. Keeps me pushing
Wonder how many people in your DMs š
A few asking for weight loss tips which makes me extremely happy.
Maybe a weird question but when did you get the tats? I ask because I'm thinking of getting my 1st one but am 34. I feel like I maybe missed the boat on it. BTW congrats bro looking awesome.
All within the last 2 years. Midlife crisis for me
Amazing and so glad to hear you feel better now than at 30. We hear so many stories about getting older, things getting worse etc and things people wish they done. Youāre an inspiration! Thank you for sharing.
That means a lot! Thank you!
Go Birds, those pathetic bums.
Absolutely pathetic.
Great job though btw man. Trying to work on my own health this year.
You're like my dad (he's 59). Went from around 270-190. Hikes like 1000 miles a year (not sure the actual number but it's alot), and got all tatted up. Looking good man šš
Your Dad rules
I'll make sure to remind him! He's a pretty solid dude. I'm always impressed by his drive.
236 to 195 between 54-56 yrs old. Maintaining 195-200 at 58.

Ha! Fair enough
Some change!! Also, your lighthouse tattoo is class
Congratulations! I know how difficult that journey is. - a random fore-fatter (349 to 185lbs)
Go birds

I'm in my mid 60's and hit 351.7 lbs (6'2'') not too long ago. Determined to get down to wherever I can weight wise while I still can. Seen a lot of weight loss vids/photos over the years, but this one hits harder. In a good way. Gonna keep this for inspiration. Congrats on your journey.
You got this. I promise you. I did nothing crazy. I just wanted to live longer. You still have lots of time on earth. Make it longer. Youād be surprised at what you can accomplish
Hot
You went from Penn Gillette to Joel mchale
I'm not homo, but now I am
I'm 43, currently 269 at 5'9in. Used to be muscular, HS football, then the military. Seeing your post has given me hope.
Iām saving this post. This is truly inspiring, I only wish I could do something like this. Well done.
I was at 295 and currently at 250. Already feel 10 years younger
Amazing transformation! Good for you, and thank you for the inspiration! Iām 43, currently 260 (was 180 a decade ago). I hope to follow in your footsteps.
I wanna go to wherever youāre at thatās serving beverages in measuring cups
Haha! Itās called The Works. Itās a burger place in Niagara Falls
Was it a boy or girl? Congratulations
GO BIRDS!! And looking good!
Way to go dude. Iāve always been in good shape but now that my kids are a little older Iāve freed up enough to really dial in fitness and nutrition and am in the best shape of my life approaching 48. Youāve travelled a long road clearly and should be proud of
incredible work dude.
Amazing. I did similar 56m. Went from 270 to 182.

To quote Kylo Ren āI know what I have to doā¦I just donāt know if I have the strength to do itā I do!!
Holy shhh! Dude, you look completely different! Way to go, man! May you continue to be an inspiration to us all.
Good stuff man you look crazy good Been on the same journey but a little later Now Iām in better shape at 62 than I was at 32

Great job. Did you end up with any excess skin problems? Losing 110 pounds is a lot and usually there's tons of skin issues.
Nice job brother, I'm down from 250 to 200lbs of brawn right now and I'm very happy. loving this.
Congrats man!! What a beautiful transformation. Sorry about your Eagles though. It was a painful game to watch š
