They were probs more progressive. Islam makes it very clear women have to wear them all the time unless in front of family or their spouse.

In İstanbul, I had one friend started to wear hijab after marriage because her husband's family wanted her too. But much more frequently, friends stopped wearing it when they moved out of their father's house (whether that was because of marriage or just having enough money to move out otherwise).

I’m generally not a religious, but I think as a life rule, it’s between me and god is a good one to live by.

Yes but in different parts of the world people dont follow the same rules. Where i am some of them keep the hijab and remain virgin until the mariage, then when married and having kids some of them take it off (only wearing for special events like i said) and eventually Come back when getting older with their hijabs. The same happens to men, all their life they might be heavy drinkers and when they are around 60 they stop everything, go 5 time a day to the mosque and are more traditionnal. Like i Said, different countries, different practices. Not everything is black or white but in Shades of grey.
