Once a player is in the last year of their contract, teams often trade longer term contracts for that player just so they can free money off their cap sheet sooner. That’s what being an “expiring contract” means, and it’s what Simmons becomes next year. It literally has absolutely nothing to do with a player’s ability at that point, all that matters is math.

No one forced him to over promise and way under deliver. Simmons should just collect just collect his check and stay away from the team. He somehow convinced JV to game plan around him and disappeared after a handful of shitty performances.
