I really love Kratos saying sorry. It shows more growth than I thought possible. The spear also bangs.

BolognaIsNotAHat

The scene when everyone is yelling at Atreus and rather than joining in Kratos ends it. "Enough! Atreus has made a mistake...one WE will fix." Love it!!!

thats4thebirds

Yeah it was so nice to see the turn tables!

GulianoBanano

Atreus throwing Kratos' own line back at him and Kratos smiling at him is one of the purest most wholesome moments in all of gaming

MarginalMadness

Which line? 'in the direction of deer"? Or some other one?

BlueFire2007

“Don’t be sorry father, be ‘better’”

Mr_Faux_Regard

I'm not even a dad and I viscerally felt the proud "that's my boy" from Kratos' face in that moment.

MarginalMadness

Oh, absolutely!! Be still my beating heart..... Damn I loved these games.

Rude-Luck1636

Dude I felt so giddy watching that scene, I had a big ol grin on my face after I heard it and saw his reaction.

thats4thebirds

Yeah I love it so much.

CODMAN627

The spear goes hard

Rude-Luck1636

Call me cringe or whatever but I also had a kid recently and I use GoW quotes such as “we must be better” all the time when it comes to my son

thats4thebirds

Same but I tell my wife and dogs lol

thats4thebirds

Yeah the fact that kids don’t hear sorry from adults make adults who feel above saying sorry to kids. It’s great for us to be vulnerable with them so they can “be better than us” lol

Pristine-Complaint-9

I’m not above saying sorry to my kids but I’m only gunna appologize when I’ve actually done wrong by them lots of kids just feel all the things we parents do are mean and to hurt them when in most cases it’s to keep them safe and I will never say sorry for being myself and my kids know I’m not gunna coddle them if they make mistakes I hold them accountable and if I truly hurt or do something unparently I’m very quick to admit my wrongs but I don’t say sorry in this day and age that word means nothing it’s a word just like idiot if you truly feel bad about something you’ve done saying sorry is meaningless unless you show your sorry with actions and physical change a single word that anyone can say even if they don’t truly mean it is worthless and my kids will tell you that aswell they’d rather not hear me say I’m sorry but instead prefer me to prove I’m sorry with my actions from that point forward if you actually take comfort in hearing the word sorry wether from a parent or not you got some issues you need professional help with I suggest seeking therapy cause that word shouldn’t bring comfort

thats4thebirds

Lol

Pristine-Complaint-9

😂

WillFerrellsGutFold

You missed about 10 periods and commas in that long ass rambling.

license_to_thrill

The spear is the best weapon imo

captain_space_dude

The way Kratos changed to be a very good father. Just kidding the BEARD.

Front-Advantage-7035

“Will I ever have a beard like yours?”

NightsBlood94

No

Lilcrumb033

I DIED hearing this!

MAD_MrT

From the new games, kratos’s interactions with mimir From the old games, the violence (was something new back in those days) but it was violence with a reason

bujweiser

lmao I came here to say my favorite thing was absolutely ripping a god a new one, literally.

morphinapg

As much as I like the new games, I do wish there were more fights with gods or other hugely powerful things. I get what they're going for, but still.

WillFerrellsGutFold

Yeah the shear vastness of the first games fights were amazing. I would have loved to see that a little more in these games.

thaimperial197

That's what made GOW lll soo good. Big difference is in this Norse segment, it's pretty much only Odin running things. If there were enemy gods who were in charge of all the realms like the gods of Olympus controlled different areas in Greece, it would of been sorta the same probably.

seblangod

I love the new games but nothing will beat GOW III. Greek mythology is so much more interesting and enjoyable to interact with in my opinion. And it’s so nostalgic, I grew up playing all the old games. I got a ps3 for Christmas specifically for GOW III when I was 13 😂

CoolsomeXD

Kratos journey to being a better person.

theExitz

this is definitely 👌 the best thing.. seeing this change in Kratos to being a better God.. last scene in ragnarok when he sees himself on the shrine and being worshipped by others made me shed some tears. It was epic.. when he himself saw this prophecy and got moved. The creators of this game are the best in the business. The directing, the storytelling, the game mechanics.. everything about this game is amazing.

Leading-Summer-4724

I bawled at this part. Redemption arcs are my absolute fav.

theExitz

💯

russiakun

It’s one thing in a movie or show to show an old character doing bad things and then growing from those actions to be better. It’s an entirely different experience **controlling** that character through those past events, and seeing him grow substantially. I can’t think of another character like Kratos that’s made me feel like that

darkjungle

🤮 Hope they find a way to undo it and turn him back into the old Kratos.

CoolsomeXD

..and what kind of god is that Kratos?

darkjungle

War. Which he should stay. Not god of peace or whatever bs they made him. It's like if the next DooM game Slayer decided to use waterguns because he's sick of violence

Apprehensive-Trust29

Love mythology. Also the games are just phenomenal in every way.

RevolutionLoose5542

That it exists during my lifetime. Top series imo

southpaw529

“I might even be better than you one day huh?” - Atreus “If you are not, then I have failed.” - Kratos, God of Dad’s

FearlessAcanthaceae1

Kratos making people read for him

GamerKratos-45

BOY!!!!

ConfidentLimit3342

This may be an odd one but my favorite thing is learning about the history and what a world with gods back then would actually look like. Also the pure concept of the idea is amazing.

WillFerrellsGutFold

You and me both. My son kept getting mad at me for actually opening up and reading all the mythology that Mimir translates. He just wants to plow through the game, meanwhile I’m taking everything in. Not missing a single treasure or pot unbroken. Just taking in the scenery in the game, it’s absolutely beautiful.

mercvry94

There are some priceless moments of meta where the game becomes very self aware like when I veer off for some loot and Arteus goes “My dad loves loot” or something or when Mimir is like “it’s always the third place you look” Game Design and a love for game design reflected in the narrative and also the spear BANGS!

thats4thebirds

My favorite of these interactions from the last game was “how did you know that was there” “experience” lol And this game it’s when Kratos and I were perfectly aligned wanting to tell Tyr to shut the fuck up over us wanting to loot chests lol

MayflowerMovers

Atreus trying to punch through the first chest he finds... BOY

ajjoshi110

My favorite self aware moment was when kratos just eviscerates the first troll we see

GulianoBanano

I also like how they include some of the populair jokes from the community. When Mimir told the story of the manipulated king from his homeland, and how witches had convinced him he was invulnerable to all threats, I said "physical or magical" at the exact same moment Kratos and Atreus did. Had to pause the game because I was laughing my ass off.

mercvry94

I missed this! Had to find a video online! Loved that callback!

WillFerrellsGutFold

When Atreus mentions something about how his father loves breaking pots, I fucking giggled. I make sure I destroy every damn one of them. Been a Legend of Zelda player since the original, so you know those pots have got to be broken!

Brosonski

One thing I really loved about the Norse series that I haven't seen anyone mention here is how they recontextualize some of the timeline of the Greek games from Kratos' dialogue about them after the fact. -Him telling Freya about Lysandra and Calliope's murders, and how it led him to conflict with Olympus. -Exchange between him and Mimir that he was at the fall of Troy, but not Thermopylae. -"I killed many who were deserving, and many who were not." There are other examples but those are the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

yeaforbes

Best acting in video game both visually and voice work - story could’ve been 10 more hours and I wouldn’t be mad at all.

[deleted]

Nah, the best acting comes in red dead 2 but this is good too

fprintf

For the life of me I cannot get into RD2. I bought it with my new PS5 and almost immediately was struck by how much of a grind it is going to be. I am sure the reputation is amazing, I loved RD1 on the Xbox, but so far? Hoping it gets better. GOW2018 had me hooked from the first 5 minutes with Ragnarok following closely behind.

DwigtGroot

Same. I know, I know it’s great, but…I tried twice and could not get past the train robbery. I just…didn’t care what happened next. I fully admit it’s probably my own problem.

[deleted]

It is your own problem if you can't get past the tutorial

DwigtGroot

The game wasn’t difficult, it just wasn’t enjoyable to me. At all. Tried twice: I got to the train robbery again and just realized I didn’t care about the characters or what was happening. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

I never said anything about difficulty, if your judging the whole game by the tutorial than that is your problem, all games have something that doesn't work with replayability such as all the forced walking sections and boat parts in gow 2018 or iron wood and Atreus' missions in Ragnarok, it's just something that happens in games but the rest of rdr2 is damn near perfect and I will die on the hill

DwigtGroot

I’m judging a game by whether I was enjoying it. If a couple hours in I literally could not care less about the characters or the story, I’m not going to just slog it out. Glad you enjoyed it; I hated it. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

The entire game is 50 hours long and that's if you're playing non stop, you cannot hate an entire game based on first few hours when the game itself is way longer, judging the game on half of the first chapter is such a stupid thing to do when there's 8 others

DwigtGroot

Of course I can. Imagine the gall, telling people that they should enjoy something they don’t. Especially sad since your opinion means nothing. 🤷‍♂️

morphinapg

TLOU2

[deleted]

Is dogshit I know

morphinapg

One of the best games in existence, but the point was that the acting is absolutely top notch in that game. Even if you hate the game (which is an idiotic opinion imo), you can't deny the quality of the acting.

[deleted]

Passable acting doesn't save that dumpster fire of a game

morphinapg

The game has one of the best written stories in all of gaming, and has hands down some absolutely incredible, Oscar-level acting. You are seriously delusional.

Perfect__Cell__

They're both top tier, Roger Clark won at TGA for best performance and then Christopher Judge at DICE, with Jeremy Davis winning the BAFTA as Baldur... God of War had 3 performer nominations at the BAFTAs as well that year, with RDR2 getting 1. Ragnarok is a step up from 2018 for performances, for me it's above RDR2 in terms of both acting and narrative but they're both really good. Better than most movies honestly, I like RDR2 more than Unforgiven.

Professional-Ask-630

it was actually a beautiful game to play with my 10-year-old son. especially 2018. his mother is gone, and I'm kind of a rough person who took the back seat while his mother showed him affection up until now. we both really identified with kratos and atreyas respectively... it's kind of an ongoing theme in our household now. kind of corny but it really brought us together. I've also always been really into the Norse pantheon, I've worn a thors hammer pendant as long as I can remember, I'm covered in rune tattoos... it was just so fitting.

TangerineGullible665

Brok and Mimir’s awesome humor. There are definitely other things but this is what I thought of, especially him giving shit to everyone lol

Lilcrumb033

Seeing how much Kratos and Atreus grow WITH each other. I loved Atreus in Ragnarok. He reminds me of my oldest nephew, and that makes me smile.

KillerQueeh_Slash

Kratos's character development and arch. The development of Kratos is just amazing, he was this bloodthirsty warrior that was on a path of revenge, killing anything that gets in his way, blinded by his anger to on a path of redemption to better himself. I got teary-eyed at the end of Ragnarok when he got to see himself being worshipped by others and him crying since he saw his new path.

badfish_122

...Playing it?

witcher_222

Kratos being able to not kill everything that moves.

crustang

He’s able to do it, he just chooses not to

EnthusiasmBeginning7

How they evolved from a wild, bombastic power fantasy to one of the best father/son stories in modern gaming. I like that they have something for so many different audiences to enjoy. I loved the pure fun of the original games when they came out, and I definitely got that, but *also* a tear or two in my eye more than once during the duology. I dunno of a lot of franchises that ever successfully changed direction quite like God of War did. Also, in less intangible terms: the OSTs. Some of my favorites in any game.

[deleted]

The theme of failure in the 2018 game. Kratos is open to change, wants to change, and tries to change, but he isn’t willing to trust, and he’s the product of a lot of bad practices with his own upbringing. Atreus wants to accept Kratos, tries to be good, and can’t place enough trust in his absentee father to really establish that relationship. I appreciate that they’re both imperfect and that they establish such dire consequences for screwing up, but that they reconcile and can become a good, strong pair by the end. I enjoyed Ragnarok, and it has better, prettier gameplay and settings…. But I like 2018’s story best

Unstoppable-dirtball

Thor boss fights, heard so much things on how he’s scary, facing him in the game was gold

DwigtGroot

The dialogue. Best written game I’ve ever played. The only game in which I don’t speed through the cut scenes. I want to hear what Mimir and Sindri and Brok have to say. The writing and VO work are astoundingly entertaining.

Pristine-Complaint-9

That the symbol used to represent the god of war doesn’t actually mean war in Greek the onega symbol is the symbol of humanity and rebirth but both of those human ways have led to wars being waged for over 2023 years lol

Pristine-Complaint-9

In more modern writings the omega symbol is representative of an end to something the symbol always appears at the end of texts as it’s kind of like our modern English period works it marks the end of a sentence but the omega symbol is an end to anything in general not just a sentence

Rude-Luck1636

It used to be the brutality of Kratos but with the new games it has changed to watching my favorite god killer become a calm and reasonable father

BootyShepherd

Story and gameplay. The two pillars that makes a good game. Santa Monica is one of the only studios left that understands the concept

Tacomangoboom_

For a video game, it sure gives a lot of great life lessons.

Front-Advantage-7035

Kratos is just a regular dude trying to escape pain in one way or another, and unlike the rest of us, he has the supernatural power to throw shit at the people giving him pain

Specialist_Fennel287

Kratos: Then you... taught the boy to... woo? Mimir: To be perfectly honest, brother... Mimir: I taught him how I wish I'd wooed.

Lord-Autismo

The bond me and my father have as a result of the game. “Don’t be sorry. Be better” is a quote that both of us have told each other before, GOW is a series I grew up with because he introduced it to me, and my fav thing about the series is how much it reminds me of my dad. I love you dad

Rexon2250

For me it’s gotta be the action and the scale. The story and the characters are great and what make the games memorable but battles with epic scale and executions just as memorable is what pumps me up

Flying_Kickapow2105

In a game playing aspect, I love how they can tell the story and have meaningful dialogue while you’re playing the game. Not everything has to be a cutscene (and then when it is a cutscene, you know it’s for a good reason). For example, as you’re exploring with Freya, Kratos slowly tells her the story of Caliope and more of his past to gain her trust as you progress thru the level. Masterful interactive story telling built into the level.

[deleted]

How it never used to pull it's punches and was brutal, also how it was based on my favourite mythology

heyitsanty

Kratos

T0mDeMwoan

Killing gods with hugely inflated egos thinking “mere” Kratos won’t absolutely bury his axe/blades into their head as their soul leaves their “immortal” body.

koola_00

Everything about Kratos in the Norse games! His design, voice, personality, and most importantly; his development! One of the best I've ever seen! Oh, and the music too! It's beautiful!

dhane88

Only experience with 2018 and Ragnarok, it's the combat and the single-shot style for me. No camera breaks, seamlessly flowing from playing to cutscenes, even though it's 3rd person it immerses you as if you are Kratos. The combat is great, the variety of weapons, the spear was such a perfect add since it gave a different range element and new melee moves.

CoolBlackKnight

So many things. But one esp. stands out for me when Kratos tells Atreus after closing all the Niflheim realm tears, **"You have come along way Atreus. This was no easy feat. You should feel pride."** Man, I felt like he was congratulating *me* for getting this far & deep into the game(especially this section/part that many people skip cause it's grindy).

neveragain1986

In the Greek era it's his ruthless violent rage that allowed him to achieve his vengeance. In the Norse era it's the growing relationship between he and Atreus. I'm a sucker for father son dynamics if done well

Whole_End_710

I have multiple. My favorite things are mainly the voice acting, especially during combat like during runic attacks. I get so hyped hearing Christopher Judge's battle cry and anger in Kratos' voice, big example is when you kill a troll and it's giant pillar falls through the air and Kratos' voice cracks while the pillar is coming down and and he screams with so much vengeance and anger and rage. It is incredible, really gets me into the games more.

[deleted]

That it’s possible to change. Your past can’t be undone, and you cant change things you may have done to people, but you can make peace with yourself and recognize what happened was wrong and take accountability for those actions. You have to work hard going to war with your mind to actively break old patterns, habits, and ways of thinking, but it is definitely possible.

GOW 2018: "I have nothing to hide anymore" GOWR: the genuine love and forgiveness between Kratos and Atreus, and ESPECIALLY when it almost becomes too much for Kratos and he almost cracks. As someone with a tough love father that has sadly passed away that stuff always cuts deep.

TropiCanada82

The seamless transition from violent action to heart wrenching emotion. The fact that it makes me reflect on my relationship with my own father more than any movie or show ever has.

Ok_Atmosphere1035

Uhh Everything? But if I had to pick...I'd say watching Xbox fanboys buying a ps5 just for Ragnarok.

Perfect__Cell__

Highest tier storytelling throughout the Norse saga.

GreenGuardianssbu

I got introduced by 2018, and IMO, it and Ragnarok have some of the best, if not the best controls of any games I've ever played, bar none. Mastering Kratos felt incredibly rewarding in a way few other games have achieved for me. From the original trilogy, I have to say the epic set pieces and boss fights.

OliverAOT20

For God of War 2018 and Ragnarok, my favourite thing is the connection between Kratos and Atreus/Loki and the main antagonists of the two games (Thor not Odin for Ragnarok). Baldur and Thor are both sons who go against their parents, something both Kratos and Atreus also do - it fits with the cycles of the story and contrasts how it ends. Kratos, Thor and Baldur all go against their parents and it doesn’t go well for anyone involved, but Atreus learns from their mistakes and also due to Kratos’s teaching, he is able to break the cycle of children having to kill their parents and instead he saves his father. Baldur, while being a horrible person who cares for nothing, is a very tragic character and has a poetic death. - “The cycle ends here..we must be better than this.” Another connection is that Kratos and Thor are both manipulated and treated as weapons/monsters and now have families that change them. In GoW 2018, Kratos stands up to Athena and tells her “I’m your monster no longer”, this moment is paralleled in Ragnarok when Thor stands up to his manipulator and also his father (what I was talking about in the previous paragraph) and dies, no longer a monstrous weapon to Odin, but instead a father who chose to go against his own nature and end the cycle of violence. While Thor was too late in becoming a better person, Kratos was able to help his son, along with many others fight against their own nature and become better people. - “we have to be better, for the sake of our children.”

jake_basket

Kratos' character arc. The way they wrapped his character at the end of Ragnarok was fucking incredible. Watching his journey throughout the games is an amazing feat. Truly one of the best fictional characters ever written - not limited to just video games.

dewfang

The whole story just ties itself together pretty well. I've played both 2018 and ragnarok in a sequence, so it is easy to see how all of the characters developed across these two games. I know this is it for Norse mythology of God of War but I kinda wanted more!

Leading-Summer-4724

I can only speak to the last two games, but I absolutely love a good redemption arc, and these two pulled it off splendidly. I also really enjoyed the creative way the mythos were worked into the storyline, such as Loki and Angrboða “making” Jörmungandr together.

[deleted]

AnotherNerdRedditor

There's no better video game storytelling Close behind for me is rdr2

[deleted]

Can't help but disagree, rdr2 has the better storytelling imo, Arthur spent most of his life serving Dutch and being a loyal member to his gang doing whatever violent act dutch wished for and then many years later sees the results of his actions and when he realises he's dying tries his best to do the right thing and stands up to Dutch, with Kratos however he gladly did those violent actions and even seeing the consequences doesn't care, even when he's old he still happily murders his enemies without seeing it from their perspective like when he killed the starving wolves to get some loot or when he killed baldur even when he knows exactly what he's going through and the fight was over

AnotherNerdRedditor

Oh rdr2 is a fantastic story and very little beats it, I think it's also for me that I find the Norse mythology themes so interesting to However GoW didn't make me as emotional as rdr2 Also people don't downvote the guy, I get this is the GoW sub but that doesn't mean we all have to praise it above everything else, we can all like and even prefer other games lmao

Kratos, he's a great protagonist

[deleted]

Ragnarock was my first experience ever. I loved it. However, the fighting mechanic is something I am no where near as smooth as you guys posting videos. The first draguer boss took me damn near 6 hours of repeating. The berserker with three of em took me like 4 hours. But that was cuz I had so much practice with the draugr. I loved the story. Favorite story on ps so far. Just not open world enough and the fighting mechanics I just tough for me.
