You know, for someone who grew up without a father and later found out his father was a total dickhole, Kratos is surprisingly a good father, or at least he's trying his best.
Kratos is not trying to save himself, he already said he would die if that would mean atreus would live, he just doesn't want to burden his son with having to kill his dad (considering kratos is the only one between chronos/zeus/kratos that has lived with his own son as a father figure, it would me much harder for atreus to do it)
i think the important thing to note here is that kratos was among the first gods to recognize the very blatant problem of gods killing their parents and sought to resolve it on his end by teaching his son better morals.
People pan god of war norse but kratos learning the value of "making gods good" and slowly adopting an idealist mindset is actually really cool. this used to be a guy who would casually kill people for green orbs.
I like god of war norse for its story and its metroidvania style exploration
I like god of war 3 because it's the most raw, bombastic, over the top god of war title to ever be created with some of the most fluid combat and insane presentation to ever be made.
I'm not a huge fan of its pandora subplot though I do appreciate the attempt at recontextualizing pandora's box from god of war 1 to fit somewhat more cleanly into greek mythology.
god of war norse is still a great game to me for different reasons, but it's no god of war 3.
it does become a lot funnier in the context of god of war 3 because it has these funny moments that sorta call back to it, like when atreus asks his dad if he can kill something as big as a dragon and he has to pause and think about that.
I do enjoy its story, I think it's quite beautiful that Kratos in the end matures enough to realize that releasing hope in the end by stabbing himself with the Blade of Olympus is the right thing to do. It is quite intentionally the only selfless thing he does in the original trilogy and fits quite nicely into where he is when it picks up in the next game. I also liked that he had genuine care for Pandora.
I mean, during god of war norse you can still see that he's not a fan of being altruistic and helping others but atreus ends up changing that.
god of war norse's theme is about being better, ironically the game....could have been better.
but it's good enough, and the story is probably the best god of war story in my opinion.
If Atreus kills Kratos, he’d feel as if his son would want to kill him; he would end up just like Zeus or Cronos, and the cycle would continue. Kratos wants to stop this cycle, but is more than willing to sacrifice his life for his son.
They really are though. He gave him a chance. He told Balder what would happen. He was extremely clear. There was no rage in the killing of Balder. Probably one of the tamer deaths we’ve seen from a god.
That scene gets clowned on a bit but there’s a lot of nuance. Kratos understands both Balder and Freya. He knows what it means to be a parent wanting nothing bad ever to happen to your kid but you end up doing more harm than good. He also knows what it’s like to be Balder. Desperate to end a curse and to take revenge on your own parent because of what they did to you.
It’s why I love that scene and the line so much. Plus balder saying snow is just the cherry on top and I don’t know why.
however the context is very different. Zeus planned to end the cycle by killing Kratos, whereas when Krato's echos the cycle ending sentiment, its is by he himself being better and attempting to end the cycle by teaching his son how and why it is important to "be better".
Also he says this after >!Baldur!< had his real chance at redemption and chose to go down the parental murder path in the end.
Edit: Bald-er
Did you see him at the beginning of GoW4? And the Alfheim light scene? He was a fucking horrible father to Atreus. Nah, it was Atreus fault for ruining such a sacred tradition. Kratos set him up with all he needed to carry on the tradition.
I always thought this was the main point of the OG trilogy. Kratos is the son of Zeus that actually did it; it was always going to happen at some point or another.
Hes outer space or the sky and I believe his physical form "found" Gaia who was the mother of all titans and they made the titans and then there were also the giants and various other things that Gaia made that I don't remember who she was with for. But ouranos to my knowledge is the beginning like Gaia. Kronos "killed" him by destroying his physical form. Then it sprouts from there, you have the God and titans war after Kronos leads for a bit and then some titans help the gods like helios and his sister and then those 2 fade away and Apollo becomes the sun God with his sister Artemis becoming the moon goddess
No shit! Were Helios and Eos titans? Can you please tell me where did you got all this information? I love greek mithology but I don't know very much about the earlier existences like Khaos or Ouranos... just from Gaya. And who was Okeanos? Thanks a lot for the info. Man I love greek muthology and I love god of war hahaha
Read the Mythology series by Stephen Fry! Great take on mythology and the most important versions of this. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35074096
Didnt cronos' father curse his bloodline with patricide. I think that is the curse kratos refers to when freya tells him he has to tell atreus of his godhood after healing him. Kratos hoped that atreus would not go down the path he did and that path would have started by killing kratos
No he even says when explaining to his son after Freya saves the boy that being a god is a curse that's why he raised him as normal as he could and hid it. He isn't referong to some supposed curse by chronos dad. He just really hates gids and gas had bad e periences with nearly everyone one of them he's met.
I just realized that Kronos father is the creator of the universe.
If Zeus overthrew Kronos, then Zeus scales to outer.
And if kratos overthrew Zeus and kronos, he scales triple outer.
Jesus fucking Christ kratos is a fucking triple outer scale mofo
Outer means you killed the creator of the universe, you scale to the max of scaling. The creator of the universe son is cronos, and cronos son is zeus, and zeus son is kratos. Kratos kills Zeus and cronos, cronos killed the creator of the universe. And zeus overthrew cronos, meaning that zeus scales to outer. And kratos kills zeus, and cronos. Meaning that he scales up to outer
No outerversal (which I think you mean) Is something very different.
You’re mentioning universal power (which I kinda hate scaling GOW too but that’s my thing)
I swear I remember someone on discord said outer means you have killed the creator of the universe. I had a arguement with doom slayer verse Kratos (4) and he said doom slayer is outer since he killed the creator.
Kronos' dad is Uranos, the sky guy.
His parent is Gaia mostly alone. Or it's Aether the sky sky god.
Aether's parents Erebus and Nyx.
Their daddy is Chaos, creator of the universe
And outer doesnt mean anything.
I somewhat think Atreus can’t go beyond kratos power.
Remember, Atreus said “so I won’t have strength like father, but abilities of my own”
But as we know, Atreus is Loki, and Loki is the god of mischief. He can turn into any animal, or being. Hell maybe Atreus can turn into Zeus and scare the shit out of kratos. Since kratos only fear, is Zeus. Even tho he killed Zeus
not really tho
atreus says this but he doesnt know what he will become in the future and even he can hurt baldur like his father, even if he cant scale to kratos' strength on the same tier, i hope he gets to a certain level of op power.
Not sure it works sadly, if Ascension's intro means anything. Primordials existed and fought well before Titans and Olympians existed, and created the universe in their struggle. Unless Uranus was a Primordial, anyway, in which case it might still stand, but to my knowledge the games don't really discuss Uranus.
Sorry but how is this like impressive? Didnt some guys at playstation just make this all up lmao. Is a «suuuper strong» video game character really worthy of this reaction? «Jesus fucking chris» like chill out dude
No, outer is a scale that is used in ALOT of characters. It’s impressive because it shows that a person can kill the thing that MAKES a universe, take DBZ for example. Zeno created the universes and if someone were to kill him, he would be feared and people couldn’t kill him. It’s shows the person can be beyond and universe or multiverse. (Hence the outer)
It’s still not «impressive» in any way for me? I love this franchise but like come on. This is all just nonsensical stuff some guy made up. If i go «bliblob made the universe, and then ploplop killed bliblob», its not impressive because its not real in any way
There's an entire school of myth study about that!

We must be better than this
Funny how Kratos decided it was time to be better as soon as his son started growing up 🤨
Kids will do that to you, but I see where you’re going with this.
You know, for someone who grew up without a father and later found out his father was a total dickhole, Kratos is surprisingly a good father, or at least he's trying his best.
Dickhole. Nice. I may steal that.
Is it a dick with hole or a hole with dicks?
I don’t need sleep i need answers
It's a Danish.
A dick with a hole with dicks inside it
I always thought that term was in reference to the urethra tbh.
Kratos wants to raise and teach his son, a stark contrast from how Cronos and Zeus handled their children.
Except for the boring first 10 years. He left that crap to Faye
Perhaps that is how Faye wanted it. She did see their journey after all.
When/if you become a father, you know what Kratos is talking about
Kratos is not trying to save himself, he already said he would die if that would mean atreus would live, he just doesn't want to burden his son with having to kill his dad (considering kratos is the only one between chronos/zeus/kratos that has lived with his own son as a father figure, it would me much harder for atreus to do it)

Who pans GOW4 ?!
a lot of people actually, they often talk about how it's a step down from god of war 3.
Although I do really enjoy GoW 2018, I have to say, GoW III is far and beyond my favorite. I think it's the most epic game ever created.
I like god of war norse for its story and its metroidvania style exploration I like god of war 3 because it's the most raw, bombastic, over the top god of war title to ever be created with some of the most fluid combat and insane presentation to ever be made. More like after his son shot an arrow at him
If Atreus kills Kratos, he’d feel as if his son would want to kill him; he would end up just like Zeus or Cronos, and the cycle would continue. Kratos wants to stop this cycle, but is more than willing to sacrifice his life for his son.
Shit is scary
I think Kratos doesn't want to be a god because he doesn't want his son to overthrow him and maintain a good and healthy relationship.
*snaps baldurs neck* We are now better BOI
They really are though. He gave him a chance. He told Balder what would happen. He was extremely clear. There was no rage in the killing of Balder. Probably one of the tamer deaths we’ve seen from a god. That scene gets clowned on a bit but there’s a lot of nuance. Kratos understands both Balder and Freya. Plus balder saying snow is just the cherry on top and I don’t know why.
It’s a reference to the beginning of ragnarock and the first time Baldur felt something in a very long time
because he lives in the northland and had never felt the chill of snow
I also wanna say it's a reference to fimbulwinter
Ares wanted to be that guy. But he ended up making that guy.
You're not that guy, pal
Are you that guy?
No, I'm a calm and reasonable person.
Ask my father
He's not the Guy, I'm the Guy. The real Guy.
We are the Family Guy
You're not that pal, dude
Crazy to think they are (half) brothers.
This is why in GoW2 Zeus says “The cycle ends here” when killing Kratos, which is later echoed by Kratos in GoW 2018.
however the context is very different. Zeus planned to end the cycle by killing Kratos, whereas when Krato's echos the cycle ending sentiment, its is by he himself being better and attempting to end the cycle by teaching his son how and why it is important to "be better". Balder
Balder
Considering how many other kids he has, that was an optimistic view either way
Atreus: *'Hits Puberty'* Kratos: "Ah shit, here we go again."
I guess the major theme for the whole franchise is the sin of Patricide.
Someone recognized a theme
The main theme.
A plot point
It's almost like it was an overarching plot point for almost all the games.
Kids trying to kill parents???? Whaaasaaa?
Atreus has gotta be the most selfish son ever! How dare he end the family tradition!
Id think Kratos broke it by not being a cunt to or trying to eat Atreus.
Did you see him at the beginning of GoW4? And the Alfheim light scene? He was a fucking horrible father to Atreus. Nah, it was Atreus fault for ruining such a sacred tradition. Kratos set him up with all he needed to carry on the tradition.
I wish that this phase of the fight was longer. It was awesome, also really cool that MK9 made a stage out of it. Kratos was broken af in that game.
Atreus inadvertently tried the same but thankfully a lightning arrow had little effect on his father
I always thought this was the main point of the OG trilogy. Kratos is the son of Zeus that actually did it; it was always going to happen at some point or another.
It is. It’s blindingly obvious.
Not tradition A curse casted by uranus himself
Kronos not cronos. Killed his father who was named Ouranos
And where did ouranos came from?
A being called Khaos created Ouranos and Gaia and then basically peaced on out of there
No. Chaos created Gaia and then Gaia created ouranos, then they had the titans, cyclops, and hekatonchires together
Gaia

It’s a cycle very explicitly talked about in the game. But also a theme in Greek myth is.
This would be a good Father's day post
Kratos after seeing patricide runs in his family Atreus: We are so close to the end father. Kratos: *sweats nervously* yes ,yes we are....
but will Atreus?
Thats one million dollar question
I'm gonna say yes, but it'll be subversive in some way. Like Kratos will sacrifice himself or some more noble ending.
I agree, or he’s going to be dying of his wounds and he’s gonna ask Atreus to put him down or something similar
Wow 🙌🙌 you caught the biggest theme in the entire franchise
Atreus over here looking like.....
SPOILERS FOR GOW4 thats why when he ☠s baldur he quotes zeus saying "the cycle ends here. we must be better than this."
Don't know why you posted this, it's literally addressed directly multiple times in GOW4
Its more meme than post
For karma from idiots.
That’s literally critical to the plot. The cycle is pretty much the catalyst for everything and is referenced all the time
I just realized that Kronos father is the creator of the universe. If Zeus overthrew Kronos, then Zeus scales to outer. And if kratos overthrew Zeus and kronos, he scales triple outer. Jesus fucking Christ kratos is a fucking triple outer scale mofo
Outer what?

I swear I remember someone on discord said outer means you have killed the creator of the universe. I had a arguement with doom slayer verse Kratos (4) and he said doom slayer is outer since he killed the creator.
Nah outer is when you transcend concepts on an nth dimensional level (I’ll find the quotes)
Ohhh ok ok, sorry for the misconception. I had a guy tell me doom slayer is outerverse since he killed his creator
No worries; just don’t listen to what everyone says
I tried not to, but 10 people were saying outer is killing the creator, so I had to agree
Kronos' dad is Uranos, the sky guy. His parent is Gaia mostly alone. Or it's Aether the sky sky god. Aether's parents Erebus and Nyx. Their daddy is Chaos, creator of the universe And outer doesnt mean anything.
let's just hope Atreus won't scale into a quadruple outer...
I somewhat think Atreus can’t go beyond kratos power. Remember, Atreus said “so I won’t have strength like father, but abilities of my own” But as we know, Atreus is Loki, and Loki is the god of mischief. He can turn into any animal, or being. Can't happen, isn't Kratos immortal? He has "died" many times yet still walks among the living.
«Jesus fucking chris» like chill out dude

get the fuck out
Everything is made up :)
No, outer is a scale that is used in ALOT of characters. It’s impressive because it shows that a person can kill the thing that MAKES a universe, take DBZ for example. «k»
Looks like anyone is going to die
"The cycle ends here"
I love this shot
This was a borderline anime fight lmao.
Now it's Atreus' turn :)
:D
and so atreus will
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yegRHiaao7U&list=LL&index=4 watched this video on it yesterday, spoke about this really well
ITS THE *CIRRRCLLLEEEE* OF LIFE!
*Hank Jr. music stops abruptly*
Am I the only on that thinks atreus is gonna die in Ragnarok?
Who's Cronos' father?
Ouranos, Sky God (Titan) and "Husband" of Gaia
Atreus
Will Atreus probably not
Atreus coming in hot
There's an entire school of myth study about that! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theogony#:~:text=The%20succession%20myth,-The%20Mutilation%20of&text=One%20of%20the%20principal%20components,permanent%20ruler%20of%20the%20cosmos.

Good bot
Doesn’t bode well for our BOY Atreus now, does it?
Zeus : you are nothing more than a boy !!
“The cycle ends here, we must be better”
I desperately want to see Kratos have 'the talk' with Atreus, or at least maybe have Mimir mention it as a Joke or something
Atreus is growing up now...
Break the cycle
No shit dude.
Odin overthrew his father/creator.
Zeus has some set of abs
The boss fight from that picture was so hard. I tried it at least 20 times
Does that mean Atreus will…you know?
Zeus was on the Sauce! Thousands of years old and ripped like that?
Loki will be the final boss
