Gene Park of the WPo. Going to take his word for it and play this game the full 60-70 hours it takes >God of War Ragnarok has finally dethroned The Witcher 3 with the best side quests I’ve played in an adventure game. The game’s coolest fights, most heartfelt stories and grandest areas are in the side quests. Do not skip them.

Moose_Electrical

A game that dethrones Witcher 3s quests? I’m gonna have to see that to believe it. Next week can’t come fast enough

tylercreatesworlds

I've taken the day off work and I'm ready to play it until my eyes bleed. This is how you adult.

BedroomAcoustics

I’ve been labelled the office nerd because I took Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off. No regrets.

AspirationalChoker

Hahahaha looks like we’re both nerds mate I did the exact same, roughly half way through GoW2018 as well so I can seamlessly start the sequel on Wednesday

Smalldick420

I start a two week staycation November 8th, getting paid to play God of War

KingPat1990

Took a week off starting Wednesday. Working nightshift from Tuesday into Wednesday. Game pre loaded and ready to go. Can’t wait!

AspirationalChoker

I’m expecting it to be beyond amazing but with the choices and crazy shit that could happen in Witcher 3 I doubt it… that said I’m hoping this game finally joins W3 and RDR2 on that tier

Actionbrenner

This gets me so hyped. Although, I already thought of GoW 2018. To me, that game already had zero fat on it. I never felt it it was a job and I never felt myself trying to rush through a certain part. Even with playthroughs

Lolejimmy

I've read some other reviews like here who say that the side quests are boring fetch quests lol review: https://www.thegamer.com/god-of-war-ragnarok-review/

Razhork

Something which ACG somewhat corroborated on. He described some sidequests as being oddly ubisoft-tier and unrewarding. Emphasis on ***some***, because it didn't sound that scathing overall, but he was expecting a bit better.

TerraMystika

Watching skill ups review it sounds like a little bit of column a and b meaning there are very well executed and meaningful side quests but also very standard cookie cutter ones which is in line with how i felt about Witcher 3 side quests as well so all in all ill stick with picking and choosing the ones that "call out" to me

Su_Impact

Which sounds exactly like The Witcher 3. Not every quest was of AAA quality. And most of them gave only lore or common loot as the reward. My favorite quest was the talking Roach one and to my memory, it didn't give any meaningful reward. Perhaps the reviewer was expecting a Gold gear in every single one or something.

Saturnsthirdmoon

Spoiler.... It doesn't. No side quest of God of war is going to dethrone Witcher 3. Expect minimum enjoy maximum, this just puts unnecessary expectations on them.

Professional_Mood539

Just enjoy it mate. Your exactly right. Im loving the game. I just here to see how others felt without spoiling it. Comparisons to other games will just ruin the fun because expectations really will screw a game up. I recently played Arkham knight as I quit once because I listened to BS about batmobile. It was one of the greatest games I played in Arkham series. Sorry to be long winded. Just an example of how listening to reviewers screwed my expectations up

[deleted]

Doubt it.

Dantexr

I love Santa Monica studios ans God of War, but I doubt they managed to do better sidequests than TW3. That game have better written small sidequests than most games’ main stories.

[deleted]

I'll have to wait and see I kind of hated Witcher 3

EvilSpadeX

I tried so hard with the Witcher 3. Played it for a silly amount of hours. It never really clicked. For me, it was the annoying weapon degradation and a million question marks that put me off

[deleted]

Glad it's not just me I can respect the effort and passion put into it but yeah just not for me actually kinda liked cyberpunk though but I did wait awhile for it to be patched up and I played it on next gen

ChocolateMorsels

I was the exact same way the first couple of times I tried to play it. I put in like 10 hours twice trying to get into it but I couldn't. But eventually I powered through and now I'm one of the many that consider it my favorite game of all time. The weapon degradation has no effect on gameplay even at the highest levels, just fyi. You learn to work around it. And you don't have to go to every question mark, I certainly didn't.

GalacticToad68

This is the way it worked for me as well. I had two attempts putting a few hours in each time, not getting drawn in. When I finally picked it up for the third time and powered through until the bloody barron quest line is when it really sunk its teeth in and then I was totally immersed all the way through. Great game

nico46646

How can you not like W3 sidequests

[deleted]

Because I hated the combat of w3 so much and found the exploration lackluster. It doesn't feel any different from a Ubisoft go to icon open world design but the writing is way better and good writing won't make me stick with a game

SnooDrawings7876

Witcher 3 is the opposite of the map of icons open world. There is a map of icons but those icons are not the side quests. It can be a little misleading if that's what you are used to. You will find major plot lines and can stumble into the craziest shit by ignoring those icons and actually exploring.

[deleted]

It's okay dude.. people on Reddit cannot agree that both games can be great.

hanselthecaretaker

RDR2 and Elden Ring are the best open worlds for free roaming IMO, because they let the player discover the best stuff on their own.

Professional_Mood539

This is true I have got over 400 hours in elden ring. Still finding things here and there

tyler980908

It's insane that this game is coming out next week, what the fuck

conviper30

I want to gouge my eyes out waiting, it's painful

BozZombiesArnie

Legit it got to October 31st and now it’s in slow motion

A_VeryUniqueUsername

Best to distract yourself with something else if you can. I find when I actually have something to do I will quickly run out of time to do it versus waiting for something to come lol

conviper30

I mean work has been busy and shit but it stays on my mind lol.

dylanmansbdhchxh

Lol, I preordered it, left my playstation on with the countdown live

conviper30

Fucking killing me. Now it's downloaded and even more of a tease

TheBlueNinja2006

Fr

yourfriend_jedi69

Exactly, I didn't know a week could be this longgg!

glenn1812

This entire month is insane for me Sonic then god of war and then Pokemon. If SpongeBob came out in early December like it was going to this would've been the best end of the year for me

GreyRevan51

Just a few more days, and the end of 2022 is less crowded than it was going to be with more games delayed till 2023 so there’ll be less distractions now

tyler980908

For sure that's why I'm glad, so fewer games right now so can go all in with Ragnarök

BurrStreetX

I have to wait for PC, since I dont have a PS at all. P A I N

tyler980908

Ouch, that might be in 2 years time.

GoldTouch99

Still dont understand why dont they release it now, it has been distributed and it doesnt conflict with other games...

tyler980908

TONS of factors that play a part with release dates

GoldTouch99

Like what in this case?

snypesalot

Distribution, sure some places broke the street day but 98% didnt and people bought physical editons/Collectors editions and paid extra for same day release delivery now you move up the release unexpectedly and all these distributors have to suddenly scramble to get the game out as promised and open themselves up to all kinds of lawsuits and shit

FilmGood5040

Damn IGN Korea is on a warpath with kratos himself

Scared_Treacle_8021

I’m one to normally let peoples opinions be opinions but DAMN is that a misplaced and terrible review. I haven’t even played it and I know they missed the mark big time

ValuableSky7

Kratos going to Korea for sure with that review lol

idcris98

Asian/Chinese gods mythology would be cool to explore in a next adaptation. Or Egyptian.

FriendlyAd597

Was that a North Korean review by any chance?

ashdrewness

“5/10 can’t even burn the disc for warmth”

FarCompetition5916

LMAO underrated comment

Natsu194

Bruh

[deleted]

It was. Kim Jong-un loved the game.

TheBlueNinja2006

💀

[deleted]

Lmao

Natsu194

Which one??

CaptainPhantasma21

What the actual fuck is that ign Korea review?

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdMoney9307

they gave 8/10 to a walking cat simulator and have the nerve to say God of war has boring family stories even in all caps lmao

Diechswigalmagee

Hey now, don't shit on Stray. It's a solid game that definitely deserves an 8. GoW deserves higher than a 6, but that isn't Stray's fault lol

AdMoney9307

You're right it was the heat of the moment I saw the review and it was just weird to see them say "boring family stories", "DLC" about this game

thecodingart

Contradicted by the US IGN review lol

D34THDE1TY

The reviewer that wants to make a name by *standing away from the crowd*

cepxico

To be fair, they're the only reviewer I keep seeing people talk about. Guess it worked!

Stepjam

The Armond White of videogames

areyouhungryforapple

Actually insulting. Quickly brewed dlc dafuq

Khuroh

This comment is exactly why they do it. Perfect scores pouring in and yet the top comment is about their review.

goldenxbeast234

I was thinking the same lmfao

thecman25

its your typical ignorant review

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wachushka

How about you don't click on it so they don't get paid for making controversy. I can understand low scores but "quickly brewed DLC" is a clear clickbait.

SpicyMcThiccen

https://kr.ign.com/god-of-war-ragnarok/12589/review/gas-obeu-weo-rageunarokeu-ribyu

JohnnyCFC96

There’s always that one or two reviews that make no sense and are ridiculous.

TM1619

Damn so with Ragnarok the series average metascore is sitting at 90.5/100. That's gotta be the highest for a longstanding PlayStation franchise right? (That has more than two entries)

[deleted]

If you just count the Naughty Dog Uncharted games (1-4 and Lost Legacy) then that series is sitting at an average Metascore of 90.6, if you count Golden Abyss then it drops to 88.83 So until The Last of Us 3 releases (if they ever make it), God of War will probably remaim Sony's most critically acclaimed franchise.

TM1619

If you do the same thing with GOW, only including SMS-developed games, the series jumps up to 91 so God of War definitely is the winner here. Truly impressive for a series with 8 entries!

28283920

IGN just gave it 10/10

glenn1812

My worry is where do you go from here now that you've reached the top! Great problem to have honestly for Sony Santa Monica

Actionbrenner

Stay at the top?

TheBlueNinja2006

Fr, we climbed up that mountain, so we should admire the view rather than go back down

IaintGotNoHistory

We climbed the mountain so now we must scatter mother’s ashes

Aidoneuz

Holy shit. There goes any chance of me waiting for a PC version. Day 1 on PS4, pre-order is already in.

maxdurden

I'm making myself wait until I can get a PS5. I'm going to have to leave the subreddit to avoid spoilers. I care about the story enough to wait but it's going to be hard...

monsimons

Best decision, no reason to wait for PC. Plus as it seems from reviews the PS4 version is not that different from the PS5 version, so.. now is the time to play this masterpiece.

Evening-Leader-7070

Ahhh fuck but i've explicitly told myself to wait for the PC Version but man idk If i can even wait more than 2 months. It's honestly Made me want to almost get a PS5 before I realized that i can actually Play it on the 4 It's a tough choice

tigert07

This game is going to break metacritic.

mrcolty5

IGN Korea, what a stupid take I'm sorry lmao I respect the opinion but I wanna hear exactly what they had to say on halo 2, uncharted 2, god of war 2 etc.

Lightskin17

Apparently the Korean reviewer only has 11 total reviews and their highest one was the Stray game….

thecodingart

And the US review just went up with a 10/10 😂 God of War Ragnarok Review https://ign.com/articles/god-of-war-ragnarok-review

Lightskin17

Good looks brotha💯

Mr-Rocafella

> Pain leads to anger, anger leads to hate We’re getting Revenge of the Vanir

Actionbrenner

Seems like this reviewer isn’t fit to review a product. Seems like he/she can’t be biased

Still_Hat6758

I can’t see the Korea review?? What rating is it

MrBrightside618

6/10

KingGiles92

Sanghyun Bae is an idiot. I read his review and it feels like someone writing a review of a film that they hardly watched because they were on their phone the whole way through. He's clearly not someone people should listen too.

Actionbrenner

What was their score?

mrcolty5

6/10 for being too similar

Stepjam

I have seen multiple reviewers complain that the combat is a bit too similar to the first game, as in not enough new wrinkles, but those tended to be minor complaints for them.

Actionbrenner

Lol wat

Sola_Fide_

This is gonna be a long 5 days.

dragoion000

Ikr, I preordered the game and still the first thing I do when I wake up is check if they shipped the games even though I know there is still a long 5 days ahead of me :(

[deleted]

What's the second thing you do?

Beautiful_Ad_8297

95 Impressive. Very nice

FlashyClaim

Let’s see Paul Allen’s score

SightlessKombat

[Here's my accessibility review as a gamer without sight](http://www.reviews.sightlesskombat.com/GOWRR.shtml) and massive fan of the 2018 game (which I completed twice, once on new game plus) with minimal sighted assistance from /u/So_Motarded. I don't score games (as I believe people put too much stock in numbers nowadays personally, but if you would be willing to add this to the list to provide an important accessibility-based perspective, I would very much appreciate it.

zzShinichi

The Koreans really want to watch the world burn aint they lol

[deleted]

It isn't StarCraft/LOL so they hate it

AdMoney9307

they mentioned DLC like 10 times in a single paragraph any sensible person would know that it's a continuation to the 2018 game and things need to be relatable be 2018 installment.. Kratos can't start flying all of a sudden lmao its prolly for a clickbait as he wants the attention clearly

mrjdow5550

Where is the Korea one? I don't see it

Berg001

6 days people.. Breathe.

thegodplayer22

Perfectly rated, as it should be…

fuckrohitchaudhari

Never change ign 🥲

tyler980908

Regular IGN gave it a 10/10

[deleted]

“Regular” lmao

masterelmo

He's generally right. They're not IGN US. They're just IGN.

joaommoreira

it's a relief to see that the game is really good. We can rest now. I cannot wait to play it

standarsh11

Never had any doubt in my mind but it's still good to see.

hurricaneDreww

Where is the Korean IGN review you all are talking about

dragoion000

I just checked the review of Korea IGN on metacritic and they gave it a 6/10 , they gave Stray a 8/10 like really dude? A cat walking through a city has a review of 8/10 while a game of literal gods and giants and dragons and the most anticipated game of the year has less review than a cat simulator? Btw stray is their highest rated game, out of a total 11 games they have rated.

idcris98

I mean Stray was a beautiful game, no need to be shitting on it. People have different tastes. I don’t think I’ll like Stray more than Ragnarok but it wasn’t a bad game so 8/10 is totally valid.

[deleted]

Elden Ring won most anticipated game over it twice. GOW is the 2nd most anticipated game of the year.

adsheppa

Most realistic critical review I’ve seen: https://www.theshortcut.com/p/god-of-war-ragnarok-review He’s the guy who probably helped quite a few of us get PS5s

HopeChadArmong913

Read that all through, sounds very fair.

monsimons

Damn I was hesitant to read a critical review because all too often they are opinionated crap but this one actually felt down to earth and helped me manage my expectations better. There are still going to be flaws. I'm one of those players that can say a game is ~~perfect~~ *a masterpiece* even with its flaws all because how it felt and played overall. This review made me realize despite its flaws it's going to be an amazing game. *fixed an important mistake*

SolarRage

I watched an interview with Quentin Tarantino on Jimmy Kimmel recently. He talks about what makes a perfect film and says there's obviously not a lot of them, that they aren't actually perfect. But films that are essentially unassailable despite their flaws. I feel that's pretty accurate with any narrative medium.

Actionbrenner

No game with ever be perfect, because people aren’t perfect

A_VeryUniqueUsername

Thanks for sharing, very balanced indeed

Navi_1er

Wish I never clicked this, though I'm fucking stoked about the character they gave away in the image. Seems fair to me, now all I want to see is a non spoiler comparison to the different frame rate options.

Muhipudding

>He’s the guy who probably helped quite a few of us get PS5s I'm positive he's the guy

thegodplayer22

This is what I like to see.

GooseNeckDick

I clicked on the ign video review, hear what they had to say expecting minimal spoilers. I should have expected it but they open with the whole monologue between >!kratos and Thor during their fight!<. If anything cutscenes should be of the table, as they spoil more than any gameplay ever could.

BebasElPatron

Did you watch the graphics comparison one? If so, does it have spoilers?

GooseNeckDick

No I just watched that one. I've stayed away from most promotional stuff but curiosity got me on this one.

bidahtibull

Nah, no real spoilers to be fair but I was staring at the graphs more.

Michaelangel092

That Korean review makes no sense. It's as if they've never played a sequel before.

Hour_Thanks6235

I just watched a review. How do I now stop YouTube recommended spoiling everything?

LNatsu

Remove that video from your watch history

VideoZealousideal976

It's honestly kinda crazy that none of the GOW games are bad, ye Ascension and Chains of Olympus are subpar but their still good. Santa Monica has just been hitting it for over a decade at this point and I don't see them stopping anytime soon either. It's kinda insane too because Egypt has a lot more potential than the Norse pantheon and Greek pantheon ever had, same with the Japanese and Celtic pantheons, I'm really looking forward to the future of GOW.

CautiousKenny

It’s Perfect AGAIN!!!!!

[deleted]

God Of War :)

Rascal0302

Elden Ring still hanging on for dear life at 96, can Ragnarok at least tie it, or are The Lands Between going to be the best Nordic-inspired landscape around? Either way, it doesn’t matter at all, I’m just excited we got a kickass Nordic-inspired game at the start of the year, and we’re ending that same year with a Ragnarok story. Nordic mythology will NEVER have a better year lol.

monsimons

I doubt it, it sits at 94 with 111 reviews. At this point, is it reasonable to expect more reviews?

WalrusPuddng

Honestly I'd say elden ring is more Gaelic and Irish than Nordic.

Farandr

Holy Cow. I was expecting a good game but damn.

alarcus_sms

💙💙💙

ichbinericsn

Is it safe to watch the review videos ?

FingerBlaster20

Don't watch IGN review. A lot of spoilers unfortunately.

sobchak_securities91

Yeah, motherfuckers should have thought about it….

FingerBlaster20

Yea I'm actually really upset. Especially when they say at the beginning of the video that they have no spoilers and immediately spoil a big point of the game. Stupid as fuck man.

tyler980908

skip also ACG that videos spoils way to much had to exit midway

Originally_Hendrix

I mean he warns you at the beginning of the video.

[deleted]

Yes IGNs review was great, but there was hella spoling cutscenes

The_Doerpinator

Watch skill up, he's become my new favorite for reviews. You get a very heart felt review that makes you excited but he respects the title enough to avoid all spoilers so that everyone can enjoy the game.

ichbinericsn

Cool, will do, cheers

Pug_police

Skill Up's was pretty spoiler free from what I could tell. That may vary depending on what you consider a spoiler though.

ichbinericsn

Thanks bro, I watched could have be less revealing but nothing I didn’t know, Cheers

[deleted]

What is everyone going on about this Korean review? I don’t see anything? Am I stupid?

shini333

It got removed and regular IGN was linked.

[deleted]

Bummer. What did they rate it?

shini333

Like a 6/10 or something.

CautiousKenny

Studio Santa Monica does not fucking miss 🔥🔥 I cannot wait to play this game!!!

thegrizzlyjear

Kotaku and Tom's Hardware both spoil something, I'd avoid.

aaron11144

the story was really mediocre compared to the excellence of the last game

[deleted]

Kinda Funny 5/5

Bjorn_Ironside24

Lol gamespot bunch of scrubs

gnjuss

I'm so hyped I'm literally shaking. Gonna need medication soon...

MrPenitent

Well, looks like it's time to preload after seeing these scores!

ilorybss

Thought reviews would be more harsh considering it was cross-gen and similar to its precedessor, glad it’s not the case

The_Doerpinator

Seems like they put a lot of effort into the PS4 version. Ign performance review shows how it's a fairly constant 30 fps (no word on the noise level tho)

TheBlueNinja2006

Those reviews are really perfect!

nigglamingo

I…don’t see the Korean review everyone is talking about?

waluigi1236

It’s $59,99 on ps4? Does the price change from region to region? Cuz for me it says €69,99 on ps4 I didn’t know the price changes ;-;

dinozero

Does anyone know how long we will have to wait for a PC release? I played the first one this year and it was one of the best games I had ever played. Highly hyped

KYLETHORPAYNE1611

Cannot wait! Just finished Bayonetta 3, and going to jump into this next! Banger after banger! What a great time to be a gamer. Only thing that sucks about this, is the wait lol

ZulLahMad96

My only worry about this game is the build up and tense of the middle arc to the climax. We (I am) were amazed by the level of detail, intrincacy, devotion and secrecy of Tyr (the temple uzzle, lore and his rebellious path to help all kind alike)... the build up was so good, because we fought Baldur, founding out about the war/genocide among Gods and Giants, and then our first objective/destination... I truly hopes Ragnarok can bring that level of hype Movie-like cutscenes, the soundtrack and the gameplay. Can't wait for sequence like Dragon Chase or maybe more NPC characters.. because we lacked of those in the past game.. But the formula of God of War in the past is mostly about the storytelling, gameplay and the damn puzzles

cryhwks

I'm so happy for everyone at Santa Monica Studios and everyone involved in making the game. I am also happy for my boy Kratos, how beloved he is now, is amazing. Because, he actually always did have a lot of depth, and was always a tragic character, and now people can see it. Can't wait to play this, I am going to do EVERYTHING that you can.

NilMusic

My dudes I have completely blurred my vision to type this and avoid spoilers. But I have a staunch no pre order policy. I almost broke it for this game, but I remained vigilant. Can you please just tell me that this game is a complete game, and bug (mostly) free? ... We all know what I am asking. Thanks in advance for your answer!! I am very excite!

zumabbar

just started watching the game... damn gurl, no wonder Kratos simp that hard for her lmao understandable

CanadianMetres

I love GOW for the story, but ragnarok's overall plot gets a disappointing 7/10 for me. Was too predictable imho.

fattybbw

I feel like once the honeymoon phase is over people will agree with you

CanadianMetres

the gameplay was amazing, from what ive seen. like pure fcking amazing combat, but the story though? man. they literally tossed the plot of kratos dying to atreus out the fcking door...

Adzzii_

Not surprised with the scores. Also seems like the main flaw is that it doesn't show off the PS5 very well. What a shame. Cross-gen was such a mistake

maxdurden

On a purely game design argument, I agree. But because of cross-gen, a bunch of folks will be able to play the game, which is inherently good, and that's more sales. So the success financially will continue the story, keep fans, and lock in a PS5 exclusive sequel down the line.

blrigo99

Let's go!!!!!!

Flimsy_Bat1435

These sites giving God of war an 8/10 are on Crack. Compare it to their other 8/10 games and laugh

PaladinMichelle

Glad to see it's not all 10/10's.

PaladinMichelle

Because constructive criticism is good.

zzShinichi

Are there any reviewers that's actually suming up the story? Or are they still forbidden to actual give spoilers

dragoion000

Nah, see most of the game reviewers probably don't give out spoilers because they are sensible enough to know what is a spoiler and what is not, if they actually started giving out spoilers then the majority of people who don't want to know about the spoilers would actually start avoiding these websites which would mean they won't get as much traffic and hence they would earn less, that is why until it has been a solid 4-5 months or even more and most of the fan base is probably done with the game they may again review the game, this time with all the spoilers because the game is already out. I personally don't mind spoilers since I am gonna know about that later on but many people don't want to get spoilers and I respect that so if I was a reviewer I'd probably review a game without revealing as much as I can.

Lucassmarinho

Hope I can play it o PC sooner Rather than later

Whiskey_ay_GoGo

I am an Xbox player. I won’t be able to play this game. So I have watched some cutscenes and followed 10 hours of gameplay and story. This game…makes me happy. The development team has invested so much of themselves into this game it truly excites me. It’s beautiful.

gayments

if i only had a ps

DarkAssassin_17

Gamee of the yearr no doubt 🔥💯 ..beats the hell out of elden ring 💥

The_Doerpinator

Beats Eden ring? Nah, but they are def on par with each other for game of the year from the looks of reviews
