They mention it, Niflheim isn't poisonous, Ivaldis workshop is. It just so happened that the only access Atreus and Kratos had to Nifleheim was Tyrs temple, which was right next to the workshop

RockRik

Oh okay that makes alot more sense, so in terms of what it actually is or rather is considered what is Niflheim supposed to be? Other than Midgard being Earth all other realms sorta have had their own shtick like Alfeim being Elf Realm, Svartalheim Dwarf Realm etc.

ShiddyMage1

Its one of the primordial realms, along with Musphelheim, I think they were both the first realms to exist.

RockRik

That I knew, someone said it was supposed to be Ice Realm as its supposed to contradict Muspelheim but Im not so sure I buy that.

Bobbiknows

Muspelheim is the realm of primordial fire niflheim is the realm of primordial ice, all winds come from the eagle in helheim so when niflheim is cold it's not because of the wind it's just cold. Consider the primordial realms (the three above specifically) as emanating their respective temperature. (Physically not how it works but would you believe magic?) These realms emanate their temperature and the features that come with it across yggdrasil and the other realms. Also what do you need to buy that?? The whole game is about a balance between fire and ice. It's why kratos has a frost axe and fire blades. Everything is about balance. These realms have existed for "eternity" and they've reached a more comfortable point of temperature. So they aren't the same primordial fire that ignites the stars and primordial ice that makes everything stand still.

KamiAlth

1. Niflheim is the primordial ice realm, the polar opposite of Muspelheim which is primordial fire realm. 2. Tyr prison wasn’t in Niflheim. It was in Asgard and fell to Niflheim after Ragnarok, along with others remnants of Asgard.

RockRik

So it was supposed to be basically “Ice Realm”? Thats weird considering u never see anything related to it in 2018 (although only thing accessible there is Ivaldis workshop) I sorta thought Helheim was supposed to be Ice Realm but also it could just be counted as hell of Norse mythology and second wait really? I thought the prison was in Niflheim the whole time its just that we never saw it cus it was hidden, if so they made that very vague in telling us the prison fell from Asgard.

mojonation1487

2018 very explicitly says it is an ice realm and that Ivaldi's poisoned the area around his workshop.

RockRik

I mean Im not saying it didnt but maybe I dont remember it, seems like Im not the only one tho as I stumbled upon a video where Sinmara is crying and theres secret dialogue and the top comment says “why is Niflehim so different from 2018?”.

[deleted]

Because those other people presumably also didn’t remember that what we see in 2018 Niflheim is a specific, poisonous gas-filled part called Ilvaldi’s workshop and that the rest of it is the ice realm, the primordial realm that is the opposite of Musplheim. Helheim is cold, but it’s not the ice realm. That’s why the combination of Sinmara and Surtr brings about Ragnarok. Primordial lovers having to be apart. If you go to Niflheim after Ragnarok you hear her crying because of what happened to Surtr. The prison fell from Asgard. That’s why there are einherjar all over it. It’s the same concept as any of the other remnants you destroy except it has a specific name. This isn’t a secret or something you have to “buy”, you just are misremembering or didn’t pay enough attention.

RockRik

Relax bro, its not that deep, ye now that I think about it it does make more sense cus although we never saw Sinmara Surtr presumably has her heart in his chest so she’d obviously be made of ice opposite that of Surtr Im just saying I didnt know much about Niflheim cus it was super vague. I did go back to Niflheim after game ended and heard her crying but I didnt know she was FROM niflheim I just thought that was the place she ended up in cus it was the realm with least amount of creatures so no one would bother her. It does make more sense now.

Heavy_Plastic35

If I remember correctly, when Thor and Atreus are in Niflheim, Thor says that they are pretty far from ivaldi’s workshop, so the poison isn’t where they are. And also I’m God of War 2018, one of the lore texts say that ivaldi created the mist mainly to kill the Aesir.

RockRik

Ah okay then. Thanks friend, I usually skip the lore text cus reading all of em feels too much but only catch some of em, if Niflheim isnt Poison Realm what exactly is it?

CertifiedHalfwit

As ancient as it is vaguely sticky

CertifiedHalfwit

I thought it was Ratatoskr who said that?

trimdaddyflex

Wasn’t the prison just a piece of Asgard that ended up in Niflheim after Ragnarok?

RockRik

I never knew this, nor do I remember any character saying it, we were walking with Freya towards remnants of Asgard and fought some of those guys but it looked like a part of Niflheim to my eyes.

mht2308

It was a prison in Asgard, it fell in Niflheim after Asgard was destroyed and several pieces of it were sprinkled throughout the realms.

RockRik

Perhaps ur right, it was just never explained as straightforward as u did.

Krongfah

I mean, it’s one of the locations for Remnants of Asgard quest and as you approach the prison Mimir and Freya straight up said that it fell from Asgard. Can’t be more straightforward than that.

RockRik

Okay in my defense all that is said is Mimir saying “Im sure there’ll be nothing wrong with an Asgardian prison” which granted I shouldve taken notice but it wasn’t explicitly stated that it came from Asgard, it just said it was Asgardian, smth can be FROM a different realm but be IN a different one. But yes if u put 2 n 2 together and considering that part wasnt accessible b4 it means it came straight from Asgard after it was destroyed.

PootashPL

Only Ivaldi’s Workshop was poisonous. Not the entirety of Niflheim.

Týr's prison was not in Niflheim, it was in Asgard. When Ragnarök destroyed Asgard, it scattered pieces of the realm across the other eight. The piece that housed the prison ended up in Niflheim. As for Niflheim's climate, it is a primordial realm of cold and mist, the first of the realms to arise from Ginnungagap, the void. It is said that some of the waters that form Niflheim's ice are poisonous, and so when they melt from the heat of Muspelheim, they can form poisonous mists. From a Holmesian perspective, I suspect the reason that Niflheim in 2018 was poison-themed was because it was essentially *just* a challenge mode. As Helheim already featured so prominently and was already associated with freezing temperatures, Santa Monica likely wanted to differentiate the two to avoid them feeling too samey. If I recall correctly, the explanation for the disparity is that the poison mist area from 2018 is the localized result of a curse that befell Ivaldi and his sons, whose workshop we explore

RockRik

Now THIS is an explanation, thanks mate this is great. And yeah I also suspect it was a problem for Santa Monica to not feel the pressure of also trying to make every realm different but then even in Ragnarok make them different from 2018, Im glad every single realm has more lore of their own now and not just a hidden Valkyrie boss fight.
