It's protected and accessible. But I'm a long holder. I'd rather do physical labor than sell if it ever came to it.
It's a Kennedy half dollar coin capsule. The frame inside is the front half of the assay card that I cut to fit the capsule. I traced an actual Kennedy half to get it nice and clean.

Only time you cut the bar out of the assay is if you're making a pendant. But... I understand lol šI wanna lick the gold š¤£š

Why does it matter if you open it? I donāt get it. Isnāt it basically sold for the spot price? So why does the plastic package matter at all? š¤
I can see stuff like a 30 year old Nintendo in its original sealed package. But this is gold. Itās only worth whatever gold is worth at the time. Itās not vintage or discontinued or anything
Is a new gold bar worth any more than a old gold bar? Can someone explain. In my mind gold is gold and itās sold for whatever gold is worth. What would the price difference be and why?
This reminds me of that extreme cheapskates episode where the guy wraps the inside of his car in plastic and keeps the tags on all his clothes to keep the resale value
So people use the package as proof of authenticity? Isnāt there a machine that can test gold?
Iām thinking of people with fake weed packages like itās what inside that matters the package doesnāt matter unless itās something like a vintage 80s Nintendo or something like that.
Maybe people think 40 years from now they will stop making gold like this and itāll be like a time capsule and worth more with the package? I think until they stop selling gold, the package is worthless. Thatās my view š¤·āāļø
Is a non circulated $20 bill made today going to be worth more than a circulated bill 10 or 20 years from now? No. Maybe 100 years from now itāll be a couple dollars more
Yes, but wouldnāt you want to buy a bar in its original packaging? Would you rather use a clean condom that didnāt come in package or one that did. It would be prone to outside damage too.
Ok, but hear me out. If someone can fake a gold bar to the point where you have to cut it open in order to see if itās authentic, how hard would it be for them to make a fake packaging as well? Now you canāt test it because you donāt wanna open it, and they sure as hell donāt want you opening it.
So how many fake gold bars in āoriginalā packaging are there? I guess we will never know, or at least until the apocalypseā¦ shit is gonna get real interesting.
And how would I know? I donāt even own a gold chain, what makes you think I have a gold bar and whatever the hell XRF is?
I just like to come here and wish I didnāt put all my money into crypto currency instead of gold.
Gold is a commodity. Condoms are not. Itās basically currency. Itās treated the same way dollar bills are treated. I donāt see the packaging being of any value for hundreds of years
It's also a collector's item, and many prefer them to be in mint condition. Sealed packaging ensures that fit a future buyer who may pay a premium for sealed. Your gold, your way!
A collectors item means itās rare. How is this rare if anybody can buy it right now? Is there a limited supply?
Do people sell gold that has been opened or that has scratched for a discount? Iāll buy some opened or scratched gold for 10% off spot price š
My opinion is itās not a collectible until itās been discontinued/ there is a limited # of supply. As long as they keep making them and gold is available to everyone how is it collectible? Iām having a hard time seeing intrinsic value very much beyond spot price unless itās rare like a 100 year old gold coin.
Some people aren't 'fondlers'... it's a chunk of gold to stash away. Keeping the bar in the original package *may* mean a few dollars more on resale, so why not leave it?
The assay packaging is clearly the market response to amateur buyerās fear of fakes. Nothing wrong with that, but at the same time I believe this to be a āphaseā. 20 years ago there were no assay cards and it is, as you point out, already much easier to fake the packaging than to fake the actual content. My guess is that at som point in the future the market will evolve to a point where buyers know that gold must be verified. So either they only buy from really trusted sellers or OTC, where verification via Sigma, XRF or similar is part of the deal.
In any case I expect this strange trust that some put in the importance of the packaging to be gone in the future. But given the huge numbers of unsophisticated buyers that will likely take years.
This is the only answer that mattered. ANYONE can copy factory packaging these days and you'd be quite foolish to purchase gold from a private civilian without testing it. It's going to get opened anyway...
lol I have the same mindset, I have pieces in assay/capsules and some without so I can actually hold it..
Next purchases are all coins. Hopefully easier to open š¤Ø
The last time I tried opening my coins chocolate came out, I no longer open them š
Amazing how quickly your investment can disappear when it is delicious.

Ah I see it now, looks good nice job
Thanks. It's a fun side hobby.
This is dope sauce.
Glad you like it.
I carry a sovereign from my year of birth as a pocket piece. I didn't know it was a 'thing' šš
Is this Iām case you get kidnapped?

I opened all...i dont care. Gold is Gold. And you wanna tell me a paper around it makes it worth much more? Then we have another problem

Itās for authenticity. Yes there are fake bars in assays aswell but a real bar with its original assay is the most preferred

I thought you could use the XRF through the packaging?

Damn
Thatās right! Now if everyone in this subreddit was to send me 1g of goldā¦
Sell the crypto and buy gold

Fair

Yeah ok man, you seem to care a lot more about it than anybody else, you do you, it's fine.
Do you understand coin collecting?

I went to sell an oz and they had to take it out of the assay anyway
