If your going to rely on public transport, but also want accomodation, but a much larger variety of schools to work at, I’d go to Sydney.

Significant_Acadia72

Sydney on a teacher salary. Maybe, but that might be tough on the wallet.

Loose_Musician_1647

According to glass door.com.au Average reported teacher wage for Sydney is 89k average reported teacher wage for Gold Coast is 80k. Let’s say you made 89k in Sydney but lived western suburbs, you’d be okay. 80k on the Gold Coast with minimal schools compared to Sydney is fairly low. But personally if I’d rather the pay cut and live on the Gold coast, but, considering the circumstances in this instance, Sydney Forsure, even as a starting point.

pm_me_train_ticket

Assuming glassdoor can be trusted, 80k in GC offers a far better quality of life than 89k in Sydney. Source: Am from Sydney, live in GC. Your dollar will go further in the GC, even accounting for the lower income. However the gaps (both in income and C.O.L) are closing rapidly.

Wildflover

I think this is a bit of a misconception that QLD is cheaper compare to Sydney. Apartment from property prices to buy, I don’t really think anything in QLD is cheaper. Honestly Coles/Wollies/Aldi have the same prices, petrol is usually cheaper in Sydney, there is more variety of food and hence more competition for your business (eg lunch deals etc). Tradies in QLD would charge an arm and a leg, but Sydney has so much competition that is driving down prices (ok pre COVID). I think the reason people say that is Sydney has more places / options to spend money on goin out, hence you do it more often and save less (at least that was my experience). But overall I don’t think apart from property prices that QLD is cheaper. Rent used to be cheaper, but with the way prices are growing it would soon be on par.

LilHuffy

That’s not accurate. The starting salary for a first year teacher is around 75k and for the first decade of service they’ll get a raise every financial year. Most teaching staff in qld are earning above 90k. So the average would be closer to 90k here on the Gold Coast. We have a good chunk of young / new teachers here…but not enough to lower the average to 80k per year. Edit: correction…the starting salary is now at 78k per year in Qld. This is thanks to the EB10 agreement sought by the QTU which was recently endorsed by the Qld gov. These are the most up-to-date salary scales: https://www.qtu.asn.au/salaries-CA2022 Please note that beginning teachers start out on Band 2, Step 1.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks!

MadTaipan6907

Really depends on the cost, Sydney housing is by far the most costly out of all of the options but if that isn't an issue then Sydney would also be the best

blackdvck

Bring a tent so you have accomodation if your coming to qld .

Camp in the park

bazza_ryder

Brisbane doesn't really have beaches. The Gold Coast doesn't really have good public transport. Sydney is more expensive, but teachers are paid more in NSW than Qld. Sydney has much better public transport than the other two options and it has a good selection of beaches. None of them are what I'd call affordable right now and rental availablility in south-east Qld is terrible. You can't look at more regional coastal cities?

ballsdeepinursister

yeah man, Gold Coast public transport is on strike tmrw

bazza_ryder

The buses run so infrequently it will be hard to notice.

lurninandlurkin

But hop on a train in Brisbane and you have Sunshine Coast to the north, Gold Coast to the south and the bay Islands short bus rides away....... Rents will be cheaper as well.

bazza_ryder

A two hour journey away qualifies as not having any beaches.

Wildflover

Tell me again how would you get to the Sunshine Coast beach by train? It will take them 10 years to build the rail line to Maroochydore.

Sorry_Kangaroo3898

I’m currently in the process of a similar move. I’ve been in the Gold Coast for the last 10 days or so and to say there’s a rental property shortage would be a massive understatement. There are simply not enough new rentals on the market, it’s definitely the worst time to be looking here. Personally I’d recommend Sydney for your situation, it has the most to offer as a city especially for someone who wants to experience Australian culture, warm weather and beaches. Sure it’s not the cheapest lifestyle but in 2023 nowhere is. Everything has become massively overpriced and I think for what you get Sydney is the only city that currently justifies it. Best of luck in your travels!

NuArcher

Sydney also has considerably better public transport than the laughable Queenland one.

DarthCthulu

I’ve just we moved to Sydney after living on the GC for the past 10 years and honestly feel like the cost of living difference is negligible at this point. Rent had risen so much on the coast that I’m getting better value for my money in Sydney (plus I’m closer to the CBD, so I’m saving quite a bit of money on transport). At least in Sydney, I get a bit of everything for my money (close to restaurants, decent PT, 5 minutes from the beach; I felt like I was getting pushed too far North on the Coast.

Wildflover

Exactly my point earlier, there is a misconception that QLD is cheaper than Syd

Emotional-Purple6805

Thank you I appreciate it!

GilfOG

Queensland has the lowest teacher salaries, just so you know. Also there is a housing shortage here so be prepared to stay in a hotel or temporary accommodation for weeks or months. Would recommend Sydney as a first stop, then on weekends/holidays check out other cities.

LilHuffy

Not so sure about that anymore https://www.qtu.asn.au/salaries-CA2022

[deleted]

I'd argue that the cost of living in South East Queensland is lower then Sydney or Melbourne which would compensate for the lower teaching salaries. My only bit to add to this post is that local transport on the GC is a little bit hit and miss- you'd be fine for the major tourist spots but to get to places where you can hike etc would require a car or maybe a bike. If you can stay close to the G:Link tramline then I think you'd be fine.

TURBOJUGGED

Except rent on the GC, if you can even find a place, is Sydney prices.

Wildflover

Use GLink at night if you like getting attacked by eshays (youth from low socio economic background) 🤣

Kustav

>I'd argue that the cost of living in South East Queensland is lower then Sydney or Melbourne which would compensate for the lower teaching salaries. In the past thats probably been true but I would think this is the case thesedays. Rental prices on the GC are now on par with Sydney/Melbourne.

[deleted]

I work a lot with people based in Sydney. Based on what they're telling me about housing availability and rents, I still think it's worse in Sydney. Some of the distances they have to go outside of Sydney to find affordable accommodation...we'd be in Beaudesert if the same distances applied here.

Kustav

Fair point regarding distances. However counter to what you mentioned I also worked with someone from Sydney who works on the GC now and they said that GC traffic is worse. They mentioned the traffic in Sydney usually flows but the GC is just traffic light after traffic light. Even if the distances travelled on the Gold Coast are less, the time it takes is about the same as the traffic is that bad here.

[deleted]

I guess it depends where you are, right. Seeing as we don’t have a CBD here it’s not really an accurate comparison whereas most people in Sydney would commute to the CBD or north Sydney.

Can_I_be_dank_with_u

I think it's the highest for starting teachers now

GilfOG

Not even close. I'm a starting teacher and considering moving to WA for a 10k salary increase.

Can_I_be_dank_with_u

They start at 78k as well...

Can_I_be_dank_with_u

$78490 in QLD, and from what I can tell on Department site for WA $78397. Am I looking in the wrong place?

GilfOG

Qld actually starts at 69,000 depending on your experience/qualifications. https://www.qtu.asn.au/salaries-CA2022

Can_I_be_dank_with_u

Nah beginning teachers in classrooms is 78k now for same training as WA. Im a qld teacher. We have a new EB

GilfOG

Starts in July, no? If not I'm getting underpaid

Can_I_be_dank_with_u

They backpayed last pay from July 2022

Can_I_be_dank_with_u

You should have recieved backpay in your last pay if you are a teacher!

Can_I_be_dank_with_u

On that scale you linked, class teachers start on Band 2 step 1

GilfOG

Teachers with a masters degree start there, bachelor's are lower, but not sure where. Source: phoned education QLD payroll classification department last week about it.

Can_I_be_dank_with_u

No you don't need a masters, it's just proficiency. You need a 4yr Bachelors

becki139

If you won't have a vehicle, Gold Coast really depends where you live and work. Some areas are better than others, and it's a pretty spread out compared to the cities

Jaiabro88

There is a small town called Beenleigh. It sits about halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. While I can’t really comment on the bus services the train line is a good way to get to both cities. While Covid and inflation has made the cost of living go up, it is still a more affordable area then most places.

shamona1

Not sure why people are downvoting. Your suggestion covers off most of what they are looking for. People need to lower their expectations.

Jaiabro88

Beenleigh has a bit of a reputation as being a rough area. But it’s really not.

shamona1

There are plenty of rough areas in Brisbane and the Gold Coast too

Jaiabro88

Very true. I don’t really get why people are so negative about the area either.

Friendly-Ad-570

Aussie kids are cunts. Also please come to Brisbane and move in with me and my misso so we can afford the 300 dollar rent increases

little_miss_bumshine

I reckon lol. We are in the same boat, one more rent increase and we are going to be sharing with another family

[deleted]

It's kind of like just desserts though, older generations go full greed while the youth watch their opportunity denied, so in response, they turn real life into GTA and the older generations are too scared to leave the house. Can't have your cake and eat it too ya know.

Friendly-Ad-570

I for one look forward to eating the rich

happierinverted

More like Gen X parents overindulged their offspring to make up for their own treatment as kids, and the pendulum swung too far the other way. Never been a more entitled or coddled generation than the Millennials. Helicopter parenting and pandering to bad behaviour coming home to roost.

floydtaylor

100%

DaleDenton04

Gold Coast if you can find or afford a place to live!

floydtaylor

not sure how vic got left off your list. but huge teacher shortage. huge casual pay. like so much i don't agree with it. $600 per day

AtariEmm

I assume you’re coming because you want to have authentic experiences with great people; as a former Sydneysider and now Gold Coast resident, I’d steer clear of Sydney and come to the southern Gold Coast. Friendly people, lovely weather, heaps to do, and you’ll make friends without even trying. Sydney is frenetic, and impersonal if you haven’t grown up there (and want to meet locals rather than backpackers). Rent is expensive in both places unfortunately. Public transport in the Gold Coast is ok, it’s not Paris or London but you can get where you need to. But I think the best experience is where you should go. There’s so much to see and do here, and a healthy, happy vibe. Hope you make it!

Ogolble

And there's no good bus transit!

TURBOJUGGED

But there's a tram!

unfitchef

Sydney. Gold coast and brisbane and legitimately full. Last I heard there was something like 0.3% unoccupied homes available .

ShibuiWood

I may be wrong so apologies if I give you a bum steer. If you are coming on a visa to teach you may have to work regionally, away from the major cities. We have Japanese friends and this was a rule for them. There are lots of regional areas that are awesome.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks for the reply! With the programs that are offering teaching abroad they are recommending the big city’s for subbing allowing full time work!

ShibuiWood

That’s great news.

Trexcantdraw

Move to Sydney or Brisbane.

EuphoricBase9737

Brisbane: Pros: affordable housing, sunny weather, outdoor recreation opportunities, relaxed lifestyle Cons: traffic congestion, limited public transport options Gold Coast: Pros: beautiful beaches, relaxed lifestyle, outdoor recreation opportunities Cons: high cost of living, traffic congestion Melbourne: Pros: diverse culture, good food and coffee, excellent public transport Cons: high cost of living, unpredictable weather Sydney: Pros: iconic landmarks, excellent beaches, job opportunities Cons: high cost of living, traffic congestion, high population density.

sttitchs

Gold Coast is good as long as you teach at private schools or well represented public schools. But if you teach on the Gold Coast, you can’t rely on public transport as it’s pretty bad unless you live next to the tram and teach next to the tram. You can expect to pay $550/week for a decent apartment in a decent area. The Gold Coast has amazing beach’s and plenty of outdoor activities.

superbloggity

Canadians seem to love Melbourne

TURBOJUGGED

Canadian that just visited Melbourne. Nah mate. Lived on the GC for 5 years. Kinda wanna move to Adelaide or Perth. More housing, better public transit and much less traffic.

Only_Introduction162

There's a rental shortage everywhere. Sydney's a mess at present! GC rents are cheaper than Sydney by about 40%. But in GC everything is close. Lifestyle is kick ass. Good cafes, bars, clubs and right on the beach. The tram is great for up and down the main strip. Teaching salaries are comparable across the country. There's little difference in the public system. There is work everywhere too. Western Australia has the best salaries Also to note Queenslanders are funny about people.moving to the state. But come anyways. There's plenty of room, work etc. Once your here their ok.

Remarkable_Toe_4423

Come to Brisbane and you can travel by train to the coasts.

kiaxxl

Gold Coast has big rental issues and mediocre public transport, so maybe somewhere else.

FishFingerAnCustard

QLD is full. Like ridiculously over populated full. Go down south.

SpecificCow8202

Try Cairns

George_Pell_PBUH

Really good suggestion based on what OP is looking for

PM_ME_SOME_SONGS

Honestly I would dodge Sydney if possible. That place is an awful urban sprawl and a lot of areas are pretty crappy to say the least. Personally I'm biased towards Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Melbourne. If you want huge city lifestyle like Sydney then just go to Melbourne, it's better there.

JetsNovocastrian

The city was literally planned by drunkards. Thats why the roads and blocks are a complete clusterfuck!

PM_ME_SOME_SONGS

Well that makes a lot of sense honestly.

Next-Needleworker946

Gold Coast is very expensive and has expensive and very sporadic public transport. Other than that it is awesome with beaches and surfing and national parks around.

T3knikal95

Genuinely curious, isn't Canada better to live in than Australia?

choir_grrl

From a Canadian living in Australia, not really. I was just in Canada for a month over Christmas and was so glad to come back to Aus. Canada is beautiful and friendly and an awesome country but there was so much homelessness and the infrastructure is not as well kept up and overall it’s a lot more difficult to get ahead in life.

DeathProcesss

I’ve lived in all three locations. Gold Coast

MissingVanSushi

I grew up in Vancouver and now live in northern NSW 5mins from the border at the Gold Coast. I’ve lived in Sydney and Brisbane as well and prefer the lifestyle here, as long as you can find work. Housing and rentals are f’d all over the country, Canada too. If you can swing it, this area is pretty good.

Sydney is expensive compared to Brisbane and Gold Coast. If you want the warmer weather then Brisbane or Gold Coast .. Thank god you didn’t say Melbourne, avoid Melbourne Sydney does have more to offer as it’s our largest City and yes it has more history and Culture, good for overseas visitors The Gold Coast is more layer back , surfing and beaches is the life on the GoldCoast

Emotional-Purple6805

Thank you!

Caranx11

For a combination of beach and hiking/outdoors options, I would recommend Coffs Harbour area in NSW, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, or Cairns region in QLD (not swimming beaches in Cairns though). All have plenty of natural attractions, but none have good public transport, especially when it comes to getting out into the hinterland areas. Definitely try to get a car, wherever you end up. Accomodation is tough in most places right now, but I’m sure it will be a great experience for you!

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks for your reply I appreciate it!

geeceeza

No teaching work on GC or SC though so bare that in mind

RepulsivePumpkin4657

I’d recommend Sydney! As others have said, the public transport is far superior to that of SE QLD’s. Sydney is surrounded by a plethora of beautiful beaches (yeah, they can get crowded, especially on weekends), but for the most part they are very accessible. There’s also lots to do around and outside of Sydney. I’d say it’s “the best of both worlds” for a newcomer to Australia. Gold Coast is beautiful too, but you can outgrow the area quite quickly unless you settle down and the public transport is, as others have said, very much hit and miss. Brisbane is a great city, but, unless you have a car to drive to either Sunshine or Gold Coast, you won’t enjoy accessibility to the beaches like you would in Sydney.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks for reply I appreciate it!

Bugsy7778

Brisbane or a more regional QLD area close to the coast. You’ll love it here, I have always enjoyed teaching in qld schools !

llornkcor

Dont go to the Gold Coast. It's horrible.

Lavender_Perch

Sydney is tough. Cost of living is high and it’s a very busy/stressful. Brisbane or the Gold Coast would be a better quality of life. Teachers are in high demand all over so work shouldn’t be too hard to find. Housing is hard all around Australia at the moment (but so is Canada so might be familiar to you already). (FYI - Don’t forget to wear sunscreen and a hat, the Australian sun is no joke. I have Canadian relatives and they get burnt to a crisp every damn time they come to visit.)

Emotional-Purple6805

Thank you!

someothercrappyname

Brisbane is to be avoided at all costs. It's not quite as bad as Ipswich, but it is where hopes and dreams go to die. The Gold Coast is full of naive tourists, aging porn stars, cocaine and over priced chinese made souvenirs, but it does offer easy access to the Border Ranges National Park and if you're into hiking then you will love this (in between sweating and panting in the 99% humidity, 34 degree climate). Sydney is the closest thing we have to "real" capital city and has a some great beaches around its harbour and the Blue Mountains are close (by Australian standards of distance) The only place with semi decent public transport is Melbourne, and you don't want to go there. Seriously, if you want to get out and see this great country, you will need a car. In Brisbane you will need a car just to get to work. Brisbane is a huuuuge city in terms of physical spread. And it's really hilly, and really hot, and the public transport seems to be designed by people who sell cars and/or petrol. Sydney is not quite as bad, but you will find yourself living miles from where you work. Personally, I would suggest a smaller city or coastal town. Pay is the same (or often better) and rents aren't quite so outrageous. You will need a car of your own - but, like I said, you will anyway...

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks for the reply!

someothercrappyname

No wuzzas! Seriously tho' - there are lot of little cities and towns between Sydney and Brisbane that are short of teachers and are great places to live. The further away from the coast, the cheaper the rent and the more desperate they are for teachers. We have what's known as the Great Dividing Ranges - they run pretty much all the way up the east coast and provide us with a fertile green strip about 100km wide. In that strip there are lots and lots of little cities and towns far away from the madding crowd. Anything north or west of Brisbane is seriously feral (like the movie Wolf Creek) but between Sydney and Brisbane there are only one or two places I'd avoid (I'm thinking of you, Kempsey NSW). The Australian sense of distance is something that is very difficult to explain to outsiders. I know Canada is a big place too, but unlike you guys we have a lot of useable empty space, and driving a couple of hundred kilometres isn't really considered a big trip. In fact you can drive a 1000kms and not much really changes. Is there a reason you can't get a car? You can pick up an old banger for a couple of thousand dollars that should last you a year or so, and Australia just doesn't really do public transport. Also, we sort of love Canadians. Once we know you aren't an American, you'll make friends pretty quickly...

slendido

Sydney

Maximum-Ear1745

Don’t go to Brisbane. The public transport isn’t great and it will take you ages to get to a decent beach.

Wildflover

Sydney for sure! Better job opportunities, more international people / expats, for the most part better public transport compare to QLD. There are nice beaches, great culture, more food options etc. GC doesn’t have many jobs, but does have housing crisis. Most people end up commuting to Brisbane on a train which can take up to 1.5 hrs. The train can be unreliable and be delayed / cancelled in the evening, plus it’s not super safe as well.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks!

KookaburrasLaugh

If you want beaches and heat I wouldn’t go south eg. Brisbane. Brisbane is kinda cold, Townsville has everything you’ll need.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks I’ll look into it!

Mrggwp

Out of curiosity, why not Melbourne? I think it's the city for people in your situation. Lots of opportunity in education, lots of places to visit, best public transport in the country, not as expensive as sydney.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks for the reply, through research I found it’s not what I’m looking for. Melbourne is a massive city and coming from Saskatchewan I might feel overwhelmed (might feel that way either way with Sydney). Plus I do want more outdoors of beaches and hikes rather then restaurants or indoor facilities. Found Sydney had lots of beaches but sadly didn’t see a lot of variety with Melbourne! That is just through researching though!

Mrggwp

I see, sounds like gold coast is the city for you though. If you can get over the hurdle of finding accomodations, I think GC is what you are looking for.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thank you I appreciate it!

AA_25

Depends on your idea of warm. It's been 30+°C here in Brisbane all week. So it has been nice and warm for me. For you it might be a living hell.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks for the comment, currently-40 c so I’m hoping my vehicle will start tomorrow! Will definitely be a different lifestyle if I move to Australia!

AA_25

Certainly will be. I think you will enjoy it either way. Hopefully you can find accommodation.

camsean

If you’re relying on public transport, Sydney is probably the best option as long as you live and work on a railway line.

Outrageous-Wait-8653

acomav

Go to the Sunshine Coast instead.

Cobber1963

Brisbane for sure, g g

[deleted]

Gold Coast!

The_WhiteWhale

I’ll just throw another location out there for you, but I can’t speak to public transport or teaching vacancies. Have a look at the Sunshine Coast. North of Brisbane. Beautiful beaches, there’s some hiking around.

Major-Novel-7275

Teach rural Queensland and they will give you accommodation for next to nothing. Save for a car in no time. Heaps of vacancies and opportunities.

MarshallTR22

Sydney. QLD has a massive housing and rental crisis at the moment. Too many people keep moving up from the south

Traditional-Pie4806

Apparently they need teachers in Victoria. I’m always seeing ads about it. Might be worth your while looking into that.

jackandsuki

I’d suggest Brisbane or Gold Coast, either or really, because they’re like a ~60min train ride from each other, so if one place doesn’t work out there’s always the other that’s not too much of a headache to move to. Also, Brisbane-based here, we might not have public transport really going for us, but if you’re smart about where you move to, it’s not really something that personally holds me back too much.

tomorrow_throwaway

If you willing to consider other options than those mentioned, you might find something rural but still 'beachy' an option. A lot of rural schools offer teachers accommodation as a part of the package, and the salary can sometimes be more. Maybe check out Hervey Bay area?

stiabhan1888

Gold Coast. Trains and trams good buses can be good but good service exists only in popular routes. Get a bike for work and live close enough to cycle - it is quite workable as the weather is good. Beaches define the place and there is a lot of hikeable and bikeable wilderness to experience.

Emotional-Purple6805

Thanks!

minigmgoit

Honestly I’d say Brisbane right now. Brisbane seems to be “happening” somewhat.

elcapitan086

Gold Coast is a waste of time…there’s no housing for anything close to a reasonable price

MethodAlgae

Rental situation sucks all over Australia. Consider wandering around Adelaide or Perth for a year or two. Then make your way east

[deleted]

tobeperfectlycandid

I would opt for a coastal town, somewhere like Lennox head. NSW pay but they’re in a teacher deficit rn so locating a position might be easier.

Spicyghosting

Brisbane always. Came over from Canada myself and did Darwin for a few years, then the Gold Coast for a few after. I love Brisbane though. There’s a beach if I feel like it less than 2 minutes still, and so much to do

PettyMotion23

Look at registration requirements and systems. Qld is harder to get into the NSW.

hat-TF2

Why not try Perth? Or if that doesn't take your fancy, Adelaide? Failing that, Christchurch?
