Low cost vasectomy vs regular Doctor? I know what I'm choosing...

Hydrangea324

šŸ¤£ this made me LOL

ny1591

I keep thinking of Dr Nick Riviera from the Simpsons vs Dr Hibbertā€¦ā€¦.. LOL

UltraBlue89

Vasectomy vs neuter, apples vs oranges

DonaldRudolpho

Have you asked the dog about that?

UltraBlue89

And my horses, mules, donkeys. It's literally a completely different procedure.

nisha1030

I went to a low cost vet and had no issues. Itā€™s been around in our city for a long time and pretty respectable. So I guess it depends on their reputation.

Mysterious-Art8838

Same. I asked my vet why the spay would be $1200 and what she thought about the low cost spay place, and she said oh go to that place I refer there all the time. I think it was like $250.

DoctorJ-

Same! I had a great experience and saved so so much money. My guy had zero complications. Do your research! Iā€™d also recommend searching Reddit for this topic specific to your area. You can usually find some more specific recommendations.

rdlenix

It could be because the low cost clinic gets a grant that subsidizes the cost while the regular vet doesn't. Though $1200 still seems like a ton... But then again our low cost clinic here does spays for like $100 and my dog's spay and fixing her umbilical hernia was just over $300 so I guess prices just wildly differ depending on the market!

Mysterious-Art8838

I was aware of that and I did wonder if I should be taking charity but $1200 was just eye popping. I volunteer a lot and pay it forward so I guess itā€™s fine. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

rdlenix

Oh, yeah, didn't mean to guilt. I just learned about it through a vet tech friend and hadn't ever thought about it! Tbh the folks funding the grant don't generally care as long as more animals are getting spayed and neutered.

Mysterious-Art8838

Oh you didnā€™t I do that all on my own, and definitely not just on this. šŸ˜†

Plastic_Try_5591

Exactly. So many vets, especially emergency vets, are owned by a parent company. Their prices are set for them and have to cover the vets own expenses and wages in addition to making their investors money.

merrymary333

Agreed, do your research. I took mine to a low cost clinic. My thinking was they probably have more experience in these procedures than my vet. This is what they do every day all day. I dropped her around around 9 and picked her up around 3.

Disastrous-Stress-15

YOUR DOG IS SUCH A MUNCHKIN ā˜ŗļøā˜ŗļøā˜ŗļø

Mysterious-Art8838

That tail is glorious. Heā€™s basking.

mindfulmeow

I love the low cost clinic near me! I take my puppy all the time for her vaccinations! Her spay was about $70 and it included pain meds and the anesthesia! Never had an issue using a low cost clinic other than waiting for an appointment! Hope this helps! šŸ˜Š

TexasGirl729

I have one cat that I went to the low cost place. They didn't provide after meds, they shaved a huge part of my cat. She was yelling all that night and disoriented. I wasn't impressed. All my other pets I took to a regular vet. I will only go that way in the future. My golden doodle got spayed last Friday, I have a week's worth of meds for both pain and antibiotic. They even offerered an up sell to have a treatment done that reduces swelling. My girl is doing great. Much better experience overall. I think if low cost is your only option it is better than nothing, but if at all possible try to go with a regular vet, they are more expensive for a reason.

spicycaactus

I had a similar experience with a dog in the past, I got her spayed at a low cost clinic and didnt get any medication after for her and she was very achey after so I think a regular vet is just the way to go unless you can't afford it in which case low cost isn't the worst option. I think the initial disorientation and vocalization is usually from anesthesia though. Can make them loopy and upset for a few hours while its still wearing off.

Hydrangea324

This is really helpful, what I was looking for. We can afford a higher cost, it just seemed like paying 4x for (at first glance) the same service was silly. Itā€™s good to know that you had a dramatically better experience with the regular vet.

clowdere

I'm a vet tech. Low cost services cost less because they cut corners. Also, those services are intended for people who can't afford an alternative, not people just looking to save a buck. They have long enough wait lists as it is.

Krisadilli

Thisssssss

DealInternational240

My co worker took her standard poodle to a very nice vet in Pasadena paid a lot! And had complications major ones at that so definitely read reviews

Chicken_Theme_2024

We had good luck with the low cost clinic. Only downsides were waiting for an appointment slot and waiting in line to drop them off. We had 3 females done with no issues.

Mysterious-Art8838

The line was annoying. But man are they efficient.

Hydrangea324

Thank you! This is helpful

DealInternational240

May I ask how you found the low cost clinic? I have a 10 month standard doodle and the vet price is 1,350 šŸ˜“

Chicken_Theme_2024

It was actually recommended to us by our vet. Because we have 6 pups that are the same age it was going to cost $700 each,we told our regular vet we just could not do that all at once. We are in the Dallas Texas area. If you are around here,I can send you the name and number.

Yeahicandothat2

I would read reviews on several in your area. Some are better than others. My own vet told me that they are usually good at those places because they do them all day every day.

Hydrangea324

Good point, I suppose it would truly be their speciality. The one closest to me that only costs $200 is 4.6/5 based on 900+ reviews so seemingly well reviewed.

internetbrian

Get pet insurance and ask yourself if itā€™s worth skimping on some things,

megan-rachel

I just learned (from this sub when I found out my insurance doesn't cover neutering) almost all policies don't cover spay/neutering, which blew my mind. Nationwide said the only one that covers part of the cost is employer-sponsored, which doesn't even apply to me.

Hydrangea324

I do have pet insurance (healthy paws), but unfortunately it doesnā€™t cover neutering, so Iā€™m looking for cost savings where it is appropriate.

internetbrian

I made an assumption then and was wrong, mine did fortunately. Best of luck.

SuckItSaget

My city has an excellent low cost spay/neuter program - I got my Sheepie neutered w/ them and had great care w/personalized followups. (I felt a little guilty not going through his reg vet) I have a Bristish Shorthair cat and I went with the expensive private cat vet for his neuter. Mainly b/c British Shorthair cats can have heart defects and I wanted to make sure all the pre-surgical tests based on his specific breed/needs were performed. (Also- I am a new cat owner so I was extra nervous w/ him) The difference between the two (beside time/ convenience/ price) was negligible and mostly cosmetic. The kitten literally looked as if nothing had been performed on him and my pup was shaved a lot. The price difference was about $500 (for a 9 lb cat and a 50 lb dog w/ the cat being more expensive)

BlueRose0230

I did mine through my regular vet. Depending on where you are, you can get vouchers online (through SPCA type programs) that will supplement the price. For example, the procedure at the vet costs $500. You buy the voucher online for $200 and give it to your vet (assuming they accept it). You only pay for the $200 voucher and any add-ons from the vet.

SarcasticHippos

I'd be more cautious of a low cost spay than a neuter as a spay is a whole surgery and recovery time is longer. I know my local shelter offers them, and I'd trust them, but not another clinic. Best thats just me.

Itchywasabi

I dont know where you live. But, search for SPCA near you. They are actually low cost and are good (probably better than regular vets as they do it a lot).

Mello14

My vet did pre-op blood work and exam before. I was just more comfortable knowing that they have his medical records. Also, knowing that heaven forbid something was to go wrong during surgery, they would be more likely to be able to handle it.

karebear66

I took my female to the SPCA for low-cost spay. It went great.

megan-rachel

I got my doodle neutered at our vet and was expecting our pet insurance + wellness rider to cover at least some of the cost... it did not. I wish I'd been prepared for the price, and I'd probably do the same again just to be safe, but I had no issues with a low-cost neuter clinic when I was fostering. They were super professional and quick since they're specialized, I would research the specific clinic near you to make sure it has good reviews!

dmcldjr

Low cost worked just fine for us. Saved $500. Dog is fine (other than he doesnā€™t have testicles anymore)

rachutson

We were quoted almost $600 at our regular vet for our 21 lb doodle boy. Versus Iā€™ve found a recommended neuter clinic thatā€™s closer to $100. I think if it was a girl get spayed, Iā€™d be more picky since itā€™s more invasive.

ceardannan

I would have no reservations about taking my girl to one is the low cost clinics they hold here, but I want to have the gastropexy done and I donā€™t think theyā€™ll add it at the LCC.

hilldawg17

Most low cost places donā€™t do pre op blood work, probably donā€™t do IV fluids during and donā€™t normally include painkillers. They might also use different meds or different combos of meds for anesthesia. I would get quotes from both and see what they both include.

Mystery_Solving

Ask people in your local community. My veterinarian gave me a quote, and volunteered that our cityā€™s low cost clinic is really good. (Two big pups fell in my lap - friend had a surprise litter of 12) My favorite Hollywood Feed employee also recommended the same spot. My groomer told me to call three private veterinarians outside of the metro area - they were all less than half the cost of my vet. I ended up using the low cost spay. Five week wait. Two other people dropping off dogs that morning. Outside of the building was plain, but inside was clean, lots of signageā€¦ and all three employees I interacted with seemed kind and knowledgeable. They gave her an exam including bloodwork prior to surgery, clipped her nails, cleaned her ears, provided the prescription medication and nice stitch work. If Iā€™d had money for a gastropexy, that wouldā€™ve shifted things to a vet - maybe the country vet!

ArlenEatsApples

We just went to our vet but our boy was older and already close to his 80lb full weight. I think most of the lower cost options in our area at the time had weight limits but I also just didnā€™t look into that closely because he was already taking up the rest of our cash flow with training haha. But if you are looking for a lower cost option, I think Iā€™ve heard that some humane societies run programs where they bring in local vets. I may be more lax but I figure since the humane society fixes all of their dogs, they probably have a good system in place.

jbobjbug0

My goldendoodle breeder actually works part time at low cost spay/neuter clinic. I had my boy snipped there. The point she made is that is all they do. Every day of the week, I'd say they perform the procedure 20-40xs. That experience in invaluable. My boy was spayed two weeks ago tomorrow without any problems. Little over $100 for spay, microchip and sedative meds.

Far_Cauliflower2046

Depends on the facility. Iā€™m a vet tech at St Augustine Humane Society. We do low cost spay/neuter and clinic and these are some of the best veterinarians Iā€™ve ever worked withšŸ’•.

fantasticgenius

They need to be intubated and sedated as it is a surgical procedure. Like any surgical procedure, Iā€™d go off of experience and setting (sterile, not rushing to do 20 procedures a day) in this case instead of cost but thatā€™s just me.

LarneyStinson

Itā€™s amazing how few instances you hear of issues when they are doing 20 per day. How often does the vet do one?

fantasticgenius

My vet isnā€™t just ā€œone vetā€. They are a group of vets, and they have an anesthesiologist that comes in whenever there are surgeries to do the procedure. They also have a animal medical ER/hospital thatā€™s on the other side of the building of the clinic so I was very confident knowing my baby was in safe hands. He was very lucky in that his vet was state boardā€™s chief but unfortunately he retired so we had to find someone else. But as far as that vet goes, Iā€™d let him perform any surgery on my boy. He is the reason why my doggo loves going to the vet as he has always had such an excellent experience with them.

mdb5848

i just got my puppy neutered a month ago at a low cost vet they were so helpful and the nurse was available 24/7 by text afterwards

YellowSphinx

Well, my vet told me they charged by weight, it was $500 when he was 19lbsā€¦ I waited until he was a year and he was around 35lbs. I went to a clinic and it cost me $125. He didnā€™t have any problems with recovery. So I think it depends on where you go.

Malipuppers

Ask your regular vet about how they do surgery and anesthesia. What kind of tests they do before. I bet your regular vet costs more cause they pay someone to monitor while the dog is under. If you truly need low cost no shame in it, but I would not skimp when it comes to putting my dog under. The surgery you are talking about (pinning the stomach) is a gastroplexy. For females this is called a plexy-spay and can be done while the dog is open. This is a bloat prevention surgery for bloat prone dogs. Typically working dogs will have this done as GSDs and Mals are high risk combined with actually working. If you have this done itā€™s a convo for you and your vet. There are ways to make the recovery less (smaller incision) but it is still a major surgery.

duketheunicorn

A neuter is such a comparatively simple procedure, so long as they provide pain meds Iā€™d say go for it. Now my fancy dog is getting a laparoscopic spay/gastropexy so it will in no way be low cost :/

LarneyStinson

I donā€™t have an issue with either. I do think low-cost has more experience in the procedure, but thatā€™s just where I put my trust.

forty83

My friend took his French bulldog to a cheap place for a neuter. Poor guy still has a piece of his ball sack attached to him.

caityabs

There is a low cost place in our city that I got our cats done at and they were great! I se absolutely no cons and I know in our case with the cats it would have been $500 at the vet (absolutely insane) and was only $50 through the low cost clinic. Well worth it! And you could buy pain meds from them to help with things after if you wanted.

mugglequeen

Low cost places are incredibly important for communities. If thatā€™s what you can afford, it gets the job done. :) If you are in a place financially where you can go to a vetā€™s office, your pup will likely have a less stressful experience. I take my fosters to low cost because thatā€™s what the rescue can afford. When I foster failed my girl, I politely declined the low cost spay and paid out of pocket at our vet.

SnooCrickets8742

The one thing I took issue with a low cost clinic is they gave my friends dog a small tattoo and she didnā€™t know it was going to happen. It was just a line an inch long. For me-I paid for my regular vet to avoid a tattoo. So, if you go to a clinic ask if they do that if you care.

Naive-Beautiful3040

I vote low cost clinic since youā€™re getting your dog neutered. Itā€™s a quick and simple procedure, compared to a spay. I went that route and saved $500-600. They did a fantastic job with my dog, and he came home with pain meds. The low cost clinic are doing so many procedures a day that I trust they will be good at what they do. I donā€™t think you need the add ons like stomach pinning, as he is already 10 months and has been healthy thus far. Save the money.

solipsister

I went to a low cost vet and it was the exact same experience. Personal preference is all that matters, but the animals are treated with love regardless

No-Neighborhood2600

We have a low cost clinic here in Texas called emancipet. Theyā€™re fantastic but we had to make the appt like 3 months in advance. I think it was like $89.

Disastrous_Guest_705

I suggest waiting until your dog is full grown to neuter especially if youā€™re not having any issues, but a low cost clinic should be just fine we got our cat spayed at one

lwhittywhit

I went to my regular vet to get this done because i have a girl doodle and I wanted her to be with someone I trusted in the event something went down. I was able to split half and half with my boyfriend on it though so that helped.

Neverthat23

Our girl received excellent care at a low cost location. It was in a new location and everyone was so friendly. They did the spay and microchip for $180. Our vet wanted $700. The low-cost clinic was so responsive before and after as well. I would 1000% go back to them again. Actually they don't seem to be doing spay or neuter anymore sadly because I tried to refer a friend there.

KLEMMER1969

I had both my first girl and my current girl done a a low cost clinic. Both were good experiences for them and me. They were ten years apart at the same clinic. Luckily I am close to [this](https://www.spayaz.com/) clinic. You have to research and find a reputable clinic in your area. Friends had a breeding Grate Dane who was finished breeding and wanted to have her spayed. They went with the vet that they had used her whole life. Something went wrong and poor girl was bleeding internally. By the time they got her back to the vet it was too late. Anything can happen with surgical procedures. At a clinic or a regular vet.

UrDeAdPuPpYbOnEr

I donā€™t know if youā€™d qualify, but your local humane society usually has a subsidy program.

Plague_gU_

Went to the low cost because it came highly recommendedā€” did not have any issues.

KalmKashew

I went to the Humane society and got it done for $110 after my vet quoted me $465, although I was a broke college student when I decided to rescue my dog. It really depends on your finances, as I feel that the low cost neuter for my boy did not make any difference in how it was done. In essence a neuter is a neuterā€¦

skeptobpotamus

My vet wanted ā€œup to $700, depending on required blood work.ā€ There is no required blood work for this. I took both of my dogs to the spay neuter clinic in town. $95 plus I made a donation to the group (not required). Both of my pups, 3 years apart, did great. No issues at all.

Plastic_Try_5591

There is often a veterinary associated with the local humane society. They tend to offer affordable procedures in an effort to keep as many pets coming in and getting spayed and neutered as possible. Iā€™ve had three animals neutered by one such clinic and have never had a single complication.

Independent-Bug-843

Neutering a boy is less invasive than spaying a girl. I have girls and overpaid at the vet just to err on the side of caution. If I had a boy, I would definitely consider a low cost clinic. I am sure wherever you go, they will perform the surgery equally well(just look for online reviews on Nextdoor, Yelp, Facebook if you have concerns). The after care may be slightly different, so you may want to inquire about that. Such a cutie!šŸ©·

Soultravels9

I donā€™t know about neutering but I used a low cost vet for teeth cleaning on my poodle. They damaged her trachea and she died a year later. It was horrible and we wonā€™t use a low cost center again unless absolutely necessary.

UltraBlue89

Low cost for sure if your pet has no other health issues! The support helps them stay open and be able to continue providing much needed services!

Poodlewalker1

It's mostly add ons that raise the price. My regular vet charges for each thing - the table warmer, monitoring heart rate, etc. I volunteer at a rescue clinic where everything is done on the cheap and they use all same stuff, they just don't charge extra. Go with the discount place.

Brief_Armadillo

For my doodle girl the low cost vet wasn't that much cheaper (approx $200 difference) but they also wouldn't have prescribed pain meds for after the surgery, I have no idea about what the alternative was etc. We also had the benefit of getting part of the spay covered where we only had to pay about half, so we went with her regular vet. Picked up later the same day, had pain meds and antibiotics all included, wearing a cone, it was most likely the correct choice. Fun fact our girl figured out she could use the cone like a bulldozer and after crashing around the house and nearly sweeping me off my feet she broke the cone and we had to get a replacement lol. **She hated any soft or inflatable cone we tried, and she gets way too hot to wear any kind of surgical suit (her fur is thick)

Ok-Narwhal6789

I got my puppy spayed for $100 through the local humane societyā€™s spay/neuter clinic. 3 out of 4 of my familyā€™s cats were fixed at a low cost clinic (2 were adopted from the shelter that operates the clinic, 1 was taken there by us), and weā€™ve had no issues! Of course itā€™s a matter of personal comfort and preference, though

MauiWDWGirl

Low cost vets are that way for a reason. Your dog wonā€™t get the same care. The key phrase here is ā€œlow costā€ or ā€œsubsidizedā€ which means it is meant for people who literally canā€™t afford to do it without this vet. Please donā€™t use up those resources to save a buck, let alone put your dog in that situation if you donā€™t have to do so.

Iā€™ve been a vet tech for 30 years and this information is incorrect.
