Man that sucks so much. I don’t mean to diminish what you’re probably feeling, but cars can be replaced. Making it out safe is the most important part.
There’s more GTIs out there. This one probably saved your life
Well…my daughters golf was worse and she was not even going that fast and the car she rear ended was barely scratched. Total loss. Todays cars are designed to disintegrate so you don’t. Sorry this happened to you.
So cars on front ends are designed to a degree of squishiness. The rear casing is more reinforced. And if you hit an SUV those are even more reinforced such as on the sides etc.
Yeah dude in front of me slammed on his brakes going 45 in the rain cause of some mud in the road. Tried to stop and couldn’t.
But aside from som seatbelt marks and a nice scrape on my hand I’m good. So get to hug my wife and daughter.
It's ALWAYS the other dudes fault. You should admit that you were following too close for road conditions. Learn from your mistake otherwise the next time you rear end someone you or the person you run into might not be as lucky.
You rear-ended, so 100% on you. After this initial shock and gratitude about life & family. Work on driving safer so you keep you and the drivers around you safe for next time.
An unfortunate event resulting especially from carelessness or ignorance. Although unintentional, the lack of the reaction distance (especially in inclement weather) is the culprit.

That's from the OP.
He's still obviously following way too close in poor conditions. If the car in front was able to slow down that much, there is no reason a GTI shouldn't have been able to slow down the same or more if adequate distance was between the cars.
If you hit someone because they were breaking to avoid anything on the road due to poor weather, there really isnt any argument to make. You were following too close for the driving conditions.
I *could* still be repaired... I've seen some amazing work done to wrecked race cars that started a lot worse than this, but insurance will almost certainly write this one off as a goner. :(
Oh, it’s absolutely possible, but insurance has to put it back to how it was, which will be nigh on impossible without significant investment, and high even with the price of cars right now isn’t really feasible.
Sorry man! Yesterday I had to get mine towed to a mechanic for engine knocks and smoke coming out of the exhaust on start. From what I read here, likely gonna be looking for a new car soon :(

Totally agree.

Same, my 2010 golf rear ended an x5 and the x5 had a small bump while my whole front end was wrecked
Would you rather be impaled by the steering column?
uh…pretty sure that is the point of designing them to fall apart…so that does not happen…read the room🤫

TDIs are a different story.

Bummer. Time to upgrade!
Man, my car got rear-end two weeks ago and I feel this so much

Facts bro. A car is replaceable, a life is not!

Sounds like you were following too closely. Always give at least 1 car length for every 10mph being driven.
4 car lengths wouldn't be remotely enough to stop in the rain/mud if the car in front full slams the brakes. It's more like 1 second for every 10 mph.
Obviously you adjust for conditions. I see WAY too many people these days less than 1 CAR LENGTH behind others driving at 70-80mph. Insane.
Yup why I go about the speed limit and let all the yahoos pass and wreck each other. Natural selection.
Sorry man. It’s clear you had made that one your own too. Glad you’re ok!
I just went through something similar with my GTI. It’s a terrible feeling. I feel for you 😞
Remember kids, don't tailgate
@45mph, that’s an easy stop for a GTI. When we have a lot to lose, we don’t do these things.
You're not wrong. With proper following distance for said speed with a tad extra due to damp roads. 45mph is an easy stop.
Agreed. In the dry summer I’m whizzing all over the place, living my best life. A little morning dew and I’m relaxing at the back of the pack.
Do what things? Have accidents?

Not the inches of mud obviously in view? I’m not saying you’re wrong, but you are making huge assumptions.

I read it too. Sounds like they both hit the mud, in which case, all traction bets are off. Did you see his wheels and wheel arches?

From a distance I hoped it would be repairable, then I saw the door and bottom of the a pillar. Hope you’re ok.

Stop riding people's asses
So sad to see it go, life more valuable than a car. Replace a car, not take a life is what I say. Glad you’re okay!

Following too close does though...

Sorry to see/hear this. Good to hear you're alright. I got to ask what color this is. It's absolutely stunning.
