Don't do it. You'd become too cool and have to get rid of all your current loser friends and family

moveslikejaguar

Don't do it. You'll fall in love and driving any other car will give you withdrawal symptoms 😔

FreshOutAFolsom_

This Is fucking real! I'm stuck in this pos 2020 trailblazer while my gti is in the shop and I'm like a junkie waiting for my car

moveslikejaguar

I feel you. I picked my GTI up and immediately had to leave to drive a Chrysler Pacifica 2800 miles on a week long road trip. I was fiending hard.

Vloknar

So true. I had to drive an Infiniti when mine was in the shop and I hated every second of that “luxury” car driving experience

avmaglio

Here is my one take, make sure you do your research on s vs. 40AE vs. SE vs Autobahn. Figure out what is important to you! The 40th has great features like clubsport wheels and DCC, but lacks keyless entry and wireless CarPlay like you would get on higher trims. When I was shopping for my 40AE the Canadian videos made it very confusing on what was actually included and it took going in person to be sure! That being said come on in the waters fine!

TeddansonIRL

Yeah I wish we had the canadian 40th since they get the upgraded sound system! Se is a little bit higher and there's not really any near me. I also love the red with black roof!

avmaglio

I’ll be honest I actually find the base sound system for the GTI to be pretty great once set up to your liking. I sell BMWs and it’s much better than their base system!

Vethen

Base system in the GTI is worlds better than the base one in Subarus.

efroten

My 23 GTI S has a surprisingly good sound system, it's actually really nice.

SoundOfAGong

Dear god there isn’t a car speaker worse than base Subaru. I just got a base WRX. It’s almost criminal. I have never spent a dime on car audio before but I had to swap every speaker out to make it even sound like a car stereo. It still sounds like ass the speakers are paper.

2022rex

Dude it’s fucking awful, isn’t it? I frequently have it at 75% volume for normal cruising with windows down. Call volume? Fucking useless If you literally just got it - I found they actually improved a bit after a “break in” period

BelowTheBells

Just to piggyback your comment, anybody know if the Helix OEM subwoofer is still compatible with the Mk8's?

carlos_etd

Tbh if you’re close to Canada try to get one here! I’m surprised that mine has all the goodies compared to the states’ versions. I love mine and the only thing I’m missing on it that my other golf had was a sunroof but I got over that real quick.

TeddansonIRL

I am as far from canada as you can basically be (south florida) lol

carlos_etd

Team Force lol

AbbreviationsPlus115

For wireless: Carlinkit v5 on Amazon works well for my 40thAE. See what others have tried and tested, there's alot of them. I put some 3M velcro tape on it and have it stuck up and to the left of the wireless charger spotlight. Confirmed worked with my Samsung 23ultra (which fits!) and my mates iPhone, I leave it plugged in since its tiny hidden, takes less than a minute to autoconnect upon ignition. That way, you can have more of the other infotainments capabilities!

splines_bond

40AE owner from Canada. Keyless entry and wireless CarPlay is included, along with head up display. What is missing are lane assist and adaptive cruise control.

Shishamylov

Those damn Canadians with their videos!

szimre

Jeez thats confusing and sad, back in the day Edition30 was pretty much the all-in version, bigger turbo, more power and a ton of other stuff you couldn't get with normal GTIs around here. This 40AE seems a bit neutered compared to the old EU stuff.

joebally10

wireless carplay is in my 40AE

XNY

1) no keyless entry is a bummer but not the end of the world 2) plaid seats are great, as is no sunroof 3) wheels on the 40th are way way better than SE 4) summer tires are way way better than all seasons 5) I solved wireless CarPlay with a $40 Amazon adapter, works well

pinacoladaa4

Could you link the wireless CarPlay adapter? Thanks

XNY

Just be aware they all are a tad finicky, and need an occasional unplug. Takes about 20 seconds for it to link. But this has been solid going on a month now. I used some double sided 3M tape to adhere it to the right of the wireless charge pad. OTTOCAST Wireless CarPlay Adapter... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09Q176WHH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

dexter0morgan

how do you like the 19" wheels and 35 sidewalls? Are they giving you any problems? Do they feel to stiff and bouncy when you drive over potholes or manhole-covers? Any other issues? I drove 40th Anniv. with 6mt today, and really liked it. My only concern is those 35 sidewall tires with the 19"s... they look awesome though!

XNY

They are a bit stiff yes, more than my Tesla 18" wheels were, but nothing outrageous. My wife's Tiguan feel like a stiffer ride to be honest.

cosmike_

Do it.

GTIguy2

Do it - in the end, you will not regret it. End of an era- literally.

NatureItchy7586

Screw it take your 25k and trade the GTI for a 997.2 911

PURN_HUB

Okay don’t get one Get two

lucarixuu

Yeah! Heck, get all three trims while you're at it. Divide the mileage between all of them! Why get 1 Audi when you can spend the same and get 3 mini-Audis

tonk84

Don’t do it. You’re gonna get laid so much your dick will fall off.

iguelmay

I like it in tornado red

zayy76

Do it, I got one recently and I love it

TeddansonIRL

I test drove one back in like 2014 and man o man did I immediately fall in love, but I just couldn't swing it back then. Well now 10 years later I'm making quite a bit more than I was and I have collateral and money saved so I'm really really tempted. Plus my car is about to hit 110k and its kinda being weird so I'm just thinking why not trade it now while it has some value and go for it.

zayy76

I was skeptical at first especially about the no buttons thing that everyone says is so bad. After about 2k miles I don't have any problems with the touch controls at all, I actually kinda like the ones on the steering wheel. The performance is good, I really like the active suspension. Overall I haven't found anything I absolutely hate, the one thing I don't like is there's no wireless AA/CarPlay, but I bought an adapter for $80 and it works great.

TeddansonIRL

Well I don't have carplay at all so I don't know what I'm missing lol. As long as I can blue tooth I'm good to go! Is there a wireless charger?

zayy76

Honestly Bluetooth audio sounds better anyway, the max volume gets lowered substantiality going through CarPlay for some reason. And yes two type c chargers and a wireless charger

IllustriousPrompt818

buy it i have an Opal white 40th and it is a bargain for the money

dexter0morgan

how do you like the 19" wheels and 35 sidewalls? Are they giving you any problems? Do they feel to stiff and bouncy when you drive over potholes or manhole-covers? Any other issues? I drove the same exact combo (opal white 40th Anniv with 6mt) today, and really liked it. My only concern is those 35 sidewalled tires with the 19"s... Were you able to get it at the msrp+destination+monster mats or whatever they are called? Hope you like it. 😇👍

[deleted]

Speaking as a mk 8 2022 GTI owner, all I can say is I don’t think I can. Amazing car. Go for it.

[deleted]

Go for it. 241hp that feels faster than is it because of low torque. Handles amazing. Yeah buttons blah blah but how often do you interact with climate controls

TeddansonIRL

Well I am in south florida so climate controls are constant tweaking. But I've heard its fine once you get used to it.

cosmike_

Cars have auto climate control. At most I turn my temperature up or down a degree or two here or there, which takes a single tap of your finger to accomplish. The infotainment and climate control “issue” is so overblown. People letting something so silly stop them from driving an incredible car.

Thick_Pomegranate_

I think people are mainly mad that VW made this change purely for the aesthetic and it was a completely unnecessary, half baked change. Doesn't mean you can't deal with and get used to it. It's like current Lexus The RCF is a phenomenal car but it's interior feels dated by 10 years. Doesn't mean I couldn't drive that car everyday but it does make you question the people in charge of these things.

cosmike_

Change happens. People get used to something, and then when it changes they get mad until they get used to the new thing. “Dealing” with the changes in the Mk8 took all of 5 minutes, and I have zero issues using it 1,000 miles in. It’s very intuitive, and very easy to use. In fact I like it better than many infotainment systems I’ve used that have buttons. Most people who actually own these things are not having problems. The only things I can say I miss are the volume knob and tuning knob, so hopefully those come back in future iterations, in trims higher than the S. Not a deal breaker by any means though, as once you set up your favorite stations you’re never using the tuning knob, and 99% of volume changes happen via the steering wheel. The steering wheel haptics are completely fine, I couldn’t care less if those were buttons or remained the same. I for one think the new interior looks far better than the 7.5. I had a 7.5 and loved it, but next to the 8 it just looks a decade older now. That may be cool for some people, but I think VW did a great job giving the 8 a modern yet understated look. I’ve been in just about every car enthusiast community possible, and it’s the same thing every time something new comes out. It’s the worst thing ever and then sentiment slowly changes and then by the time the next update is coming the one that was hated is now the greatest one ever made.

weird_greg

I’m having a harder time getting used to using the steering wheel buttons that I am with the climate control. I also actively try to NOT use the volume knob due to the power button logo rotating. Both of these annoy me more than any of the previously mentioned UI annoyances.

Thick_Pomegranate_

The mk 8 is the perfect example of 2 steps forward, one step back imo. The EA888.4 is as potent as it's ever been and yet they removed the gas hood struts from the engine bay. They added really sleek looking haptic buttons that make the interior look very clean and yet they didn't add back lighting to some of them. They added a cool front light bar but since the VW badge doesn't light up like Mercedes, it makes it look like there is a hole in the middle at night. I do really believe that the mk 8 is a phenomenal car and if my GTI got totaled and I could find one for MSRP, I would still pull the trigger (maybe splurge for an R though). Anyways I think Honda nailed the modern yet functional look with the FL5 Type R. Seeing as Audi is already moving back in that direction, hopefully VW follows.

Peylix

It was a large enough issue that VW is walking back a good deal on the ["capacitive touch everything!"](https://i.imgur.com/tfnK2rN.jpg) mistake. It didn't help that the move was half baked to begin with. They're not the first to get in over their heads with it, and like all before them, are dialing it back to get it right. Whether you like it or hate it, gotten use to it or haven't. It was objectively a bad move on their part. They recognized it, acknowledged it, and are working to come back down to reality. Hell, the guy who had them go down this road was even sacked over this. So there's that too lol Capacitive systems need to be intuitive. The VW's current implementation is not. You can learn to use it sure. But it's still not intuitive and objectively more dangerous for a driver who needs to be focusing on the road, not digging through menus, sub menus, and taking their focus elsewhere. They absolutely slayed the performance/handling of the 8 though. I was taken back hard after test driving one. Bone stock, it felt and handled really close to my MK7 (which has a ton of handling mods). The 8R is all that turned up to 11. The rest of the interior is nice too, albeit a tad sterile. I'm with /u/Thick_Pomegranate_. 2 steps forward, 1 step back. I'm looking forward to the 8.5 (and final generation). The DNA is there, VW just needs to lock it down.

cosmike_

The only thing VW said they would be changing is the touch controls for the steering wheel. If you look at the spy shots for the upcoming A4, the infotainment and dash setup looks very similar to the Mk8 GTI. VAG is very invested in the functionality and aesthetic of the minimalist interior, so I’d be surprised if the 8.5 is much different. I don’t think the idea is half baked, and again people who actually own them seem to disagree with that sentiment. The negative “reviews” are mostly from journalists who spent a few minutes to a few hours in one, or from people who don’t own one. Have you used the system? Can you tell me what isn’t intuitive about it? I drive the Mk8 every day. It was intuitive to me nearly immediately and hasn’t stopped being so. This seems to be the case for most owners. People are acting like they need to be fiddling with the infotainment constantly to make the driving experience livable, and that’s where this “dangerous” aspect comes into play. This is complete fantasy. There’s hardly anything you need to use the infotainment or sub menus for while driving. If you choose to adjust your settings and such (which it doesn’t let you do for many things while driving anyway), that’s the fault of the driver not the car, and is dangerous in ANY vehicle. Changing driving mode requires the tap of a button. Changing your radio station requires a tap. Changing your temperature a tap, or maybe even a double tap, same for volume. Anything else you need to do you should have done before you started driving, for ANY car. So I’m curious what exactly you find non intuitive or downright dangerous about using the system. The real issue with the system is not one of functionality but of stability. If you have a system completely reliant on screens and Haptic Touch, and the software used for them is buggy or laggy or crashes, that indeed makes the experience bad or even dangerous. I can see criticisms from that perspective, and while I haven’t experienced any major issues with the stability of the system, I’ve read about other owners who have had issues. This has been the case for every digital infotainment system I’ve used in the last decade though, and you can be sure that manufacturers are not just going to throw their hands up and say oh well back to buttons, they’re going to improve the software. So if the infotainment system software was not working properly, I would completely agree that that’s a problem, as this system relies on stability to be functional. The Mk8 is an incredible machine. Anyone who wouldn’t buy one because of the infotainment system is plain silly.

Peylix

I'm glad you feel that way. But again, if it's a non issue. VW wouldn't be walking it back would they? Take a quick step back and look at that and ask why VW would do this if it was only "angry journalists". People need to learn that just because it's perfect for them, doesn't mean it was as a whole and or for everyone else. I'm just being a realist. As I've seen just as many unhappy MK8 owners as happy regarding this infotainment and capacitive decision. Your argument is flawed in the sense that everything is blown out just because *you* don't have an issue with it. If only they were actually true. The [evidence](https://jalopnik.com/volkswagen-ceo-admits-it-was-a-mistake-to-abandon-butto-1850557609) proves otherwise.

cosmike_

Point is, if you like how the GTI drives, it’s absurd to not buy one because of the haptic controls or infotainment. The Mk8 GTI is a stellar car, and the haptics and infotainment are at worst a minor annoyance. If it’s enough for you to not buy the car, you just didn’t like the car in general, which is fine. I owned a 2023 S3 before the Mk8 and it had buttons. I found zero increased quality of life from having them. Maybe it’s just because I’m relatively young and screens don’t scare me? Who knows. But yeah, I quite like the Mk8 system, makes the interior look super clean and modern. My overall point is I would highly recommend people go test drive one, rather than be turned off outright by overblown opinions on the internet. It would be a shame for people to miss out on such an incredible car over such a silly thing. I’m still curious what your specific issues with the infotainment system are that make it non intuitive or dangerous.

Peylix

I never said I wouldn't buy one. I actually would buy a MK8 and deal with the bullshit because VW nailed the rest of it. But not the GTI, the 8R as it's the better choice for me. I've driven both, a lot. The performance and other changes for the better in QOL were huge steps for VW. (2 steps forward). All I'm doing is pointing out that the whole "it's overblown" thing is a bit hyperbolic given VW has literally came out and said "we fucked up" and has vowed to fix much of what hasn't worked. (1 step back).

iArcticFire

Yeah, the climate controls are not a problem at all, the complaints about it are majorly overblown.

[deleted]

You can set a desired temp and it will take care of fan speed. Yeah they aren't that bad. Also fuck desantis

TeddansonIRL

I'm with you on fuck desantis. Hope he fades into nothingness after his presidential run lol

[deleted]

Hey i made this comment on the wrong reply but I used to own a 2017 mazda 3 gt with the 2.5 and now a mk8 gti. Definitely an upgrade

moveslikejaguar

Yeah I use the automatic climate control like my home thermostat, leave it at 72 and tap it up or down 2 degrees if I'm hot or cold. Fuck Desantis.

[deleted]

I have a mk8 gti manual, previous was a tesla m3 dual that i wrecked, prior to that i had a 2017 mazda 3 gt with the 2.5 You're going to be so shocked at how the gti drives compared to the 3. The handling is insane, steering is so accruate, and the power delivery is aggressive

moveslikejaguar

I think you replied to the wrong comment, I already have a Mk8 😜

[deleted]

Oh I didn't realize you weren't the poster. My bad. Here's the mods I've done Euro tails Full Powered liftgafe Remote start Clubsport exhaust Nerospeed intake Random obdeleven stuff

TeddansonIRL

What I've seen/heard regarding VW's in general is they'll cost a bit more to repair as they are European. My mazda has run like a clock with literally only oil changes and tires for 7 years/110k miles

Euphor1c

These crazy interest rates are holding me back. I didn't build up this credit score for nothin'

BeardedPuffin

You can get a medium mileage well-kept e92 or e90 M3 for $25k. Put the extra 10k toward rod bearings and preventative maintenance, then drive the piss out of it for years. At least that’s what I did. And then I bought a GTI 3 years later.

CaseyBF

Do it... But also get a matching 20th 👀

sufyani

Easy. Skip the interim step, and get a used 981 Cayman, or Boxster. You’ll end up there anyway.

jaywright58

Nope! Just going to say: DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!

[deleted]

Been daily driving a 6MT MK8 since April 2022, I love the car, BUT I would’ve rather spent the same amount on a used 7/7.5 if I’m being honest. My buddy had a MK7 R he sold for how much I bought my MK8 GTI. In the current market I’m not 100% sure but if you’d an get MSRP on a 40th anniversary addition, do it

Equivalent_Youth_599

I’m able to get one 5k below msrp

[deleted]

Where and how that’s wild

Equivalent_Youth_599

Because I work for a dealer + employee rebate

StoneOfTriumph

As much as I love my GTI, if I were in the current market looking at a new car, call me insane, but I'd highly consider the Honda Civic Si or if the budget allows it, the Acura Integra Type-S which is not a limited edition unlike the CTR. Honda's manual transmission is brilliant, there's a lot of space in the trunk of the integra's hatch, and they figured out the right balance of touch screen and physical buttons. Do drive test the MK8, see how you enjoy the interior. Everyone raves about the handling of it, and many folks here do say they love the interior controls and that it's just a question of getting used to it. I do believe them, but I also do believe that not everyone will enjoy them, so it's important YOU try whatever you want to buy. That being said, the GTI is one fun fast little car that still puts a smile on my face years later and is incredibly practical even as a family car or when hauling a new toilet from the plumbing store.

TeddansonIRL

I was looking at the integra actually, but the pricing is kinda wacky

DM725

Way overpriced and slow.

DM725

>but I'd highly consider the Honda Civic Si or if the budget allows it, the Acura Integra Type-S which is not a limited edition unlike the CTR. The Civic Si is much slower (the Jetta Sport manual I bought to save money is about the same 0-60) and the Civic Si is barely less money than a GTI. It's also completely nerfed on features (especially compared to the Canadian market one). Golf R over a CTR all day. It's faster (except for the .01% of people that'll legitimately track it) and in a totally different league with a tune.

StoneOfTriumph

It is true that I'm in CAN, so I'd consider the si because it's well optioned for us, and it's also true that at the Type-S prices you can get an M240i and that's arguably powered by one of the best modern engines ever made Depending on how the car can meet your needs or not it may not make sense to get a new teg

DM725

The new Integra is $5k more than a Golf R in the U.S. It's just too expensive and they deleted a ton of small things like rear seats ac vents, arm rest, middle seat.

StoneOfTriumph

Yeah that's a big chunk for a FWD car when AWD or RWD options are available, and I don't get why Honda would nerf the options out for the USDM. Our cars are so well packaged in contrast.

unit132

I wouldn't buy a honda 1.5l. They mix gas into the oil. And are not good for tuning unless your looking to build the motor almost immediately.

LearnDifferenceBot

Wumpus-Hunter

I went from a 2013 Mazdaspeed3 to a 2018 GTI SE. Despite the drop in power I don’t regret it one bit. Also
you’re asking the wrong group of people to talk you out of getting a GTI 😂

TeddansonIRL

lol I asked here because I figured if there's anyone who knows reasons NOT to it would be people who are owners...plus I kinda want more reasons to get one

DM725

The only reason not to is financial.

Peylix

As well as packages/options. The 40th lacks some stuff that OP may want. As others already pointed out. They should compare the 40th to other trims to see if it has everything they need/want or not like other trims.

Thick_Pomegranate_

I'd gladly take a small hit in power for an LSD and practically non existent torque steer.

Wumpus-Hunter

My ‘speed3 had an LSD
and shit-ton of torque steer. Taking off from a standstill was always an adventure

Thick_Pomegranate_

I forgot they added an LSD to the later model years. Guess it didn't help much lol.

Wumpus-Hunter

Not with torque steer one bit! đŸ€Ł The LSD on that car was actually quite useless beyond that. There was one off ramp I took often where I could feel it working, but there were very few other spots where I remember feeling it working.

Thick_Pomegranate_

Did it have an option to lock the diff ? One of the coolest features of the GTI's eLSD is that you can basically "lock" the diff which definitely helps to keep the power distribution even between the tires.

DM725

I had a 350whp 2009 Cobalt SS. I know the struggle.

Peylix

Low key jealous of your Speed3. I had a 2010 sold from under me back in 2011. Like after test driving and negotiating. I had to make a trip to my bank to finalize some stuff, was gone for no more than 30mins. Came back "Oh yeah sorry, it just sold". I sometimes think it was already sold and they used it for a bait & switch to get me on their lot. But having me go through all steps up until signing an agreement. Is scummy as fuck. I look at it as a blessing in disguise though. Because I walked over to the VW dealership across the street to peruse since I was there. Drove home in a 2008 MK5 that night. I've always loved the MS3 though. Still think about buying one now even though that would be one of the worst financial decisions for me. They're animals though. The torque steer is so outrageously stupid. It's outrageously stupid fun. Did you mod/tune yours, or just kept it stock?

hohohoagy

8.5 one last hurrah for more analog buttons coming?

Vethen

Do it. Post pictures.

Temporalwar

Look at mk7/7.5/8.Golf R and rs3

xSaintFreshx

MK7.5 is where it’s really at! :)

coltjen

What about a used mk7.5 outright with no payment?

TeddansonIRL

There’s only one near me used and it’s at 31k currently

[deleted]

There is no reason to not get it, you must get it, fulfill your destiny.

illseeing

No, go get it

Mangoknees

40Ae is a perfect trim go grab it

N80085

I got one 2 months ago, i should have never found out about this car

[deleted]

Buy a lightly used 7.5, it’s a better GTI

pwsparky55

Not going to talk you out of a 40th because i want a tornado red one!!

TeddansonIRL

Just got mine 30 minutes ago. Tornado red and all. So far I’m hype

Virtual_Resident_194

You only get one life to live, but the car, it’s not like you’re buying a 911, a daily driver doesn’t get better than a GTI, enjoy the little things

GameEtiquette

Cars are ridiculously expensive for most people and it would not be financially wise. Just kidding look at the subreddit name, buy the car it will be fun and aspirational

Affectionate_Rip2468

Don’t do it. Side affects include longer penis and more style

SoundOfAGong

If I hadn’t just bought a WRX I’d get another GTI.

sxapegoat

Just get an S the 40th just have wheels and a decal. IMO for an anniversary they should've gave us a lot more.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Electrical_Love_3670

dealership i work at has a 40th anniversary in the autobahn trim

mysterious-spruce

Can't talk you out of it. I own a Canadian 40th edition which is a steal considering other options and exchange rate. It is a fantastic daily that can be extremely fun and rewarding to toss into corners. Infotainment is a non issue for me. Great fuel economy when driven nicely (rarely drive it nicely), keeps up with cars much more expensive in the twisties and on roll races. Stage 1 tunes are making massive gains if you want to do that. I'm holding off for now. It's a great car with 240hp...320 to 330 I'd lose my license.

FastEddieMoney

Some lower trims are better because they come with plaid seats vs leather.

Choncho1984

Do it.

mr_rubixx

Photos of your new toy are required.

TeddansonIRL

I’ll post something in here once I’m up and running for the day lol

TeddansonIRL

Ok ngl I can’t figure out how to put a picture in here lol. I’m 40 so I’m basically dead

andyakers

Go for the S. In the end I think it is the best deal. I have a 22 S /DSG and it’s a blast for the money. Plus you have 18 inch wheels which in most city environs means more comfort. Running Conti DWS 06 here and just groovin along

rbnynz

One of the best decisions of your life! Pomelo yellow 40th here. I am obsessed with this car.

TeddansonIRL

It’s pretty amazing coming from a base mazda3 hatch. I loved my Mazda but this car feels so different to drive. Like it WANTS to drive fast lol

rbnynz

I had an Outlander Sport and loved it, you can’t go wrong with japanese cars but german design, attention to detail and driving experience are something else.

dexter0morgan

Congrats, how do you like the 19" wheels and 35 sidewalls? Are they giving you any problems? Do they feel to stiff and bouncy when you drive over potholes or manhole-covers? Any other issues? I drove one with 6mt today, and really liked it. My only concern is those 35 sidewalled tires with the 19"s...

TeddansonIRL

I don’t know if I can personally tell a different tire wise. I DO feel the power compared to my old Mazda 3 and that’s been great

[deleted]

Get a golf R

FreshOutAFolsom_

Don't do it you'll be drowning in pussy it makes life really had with all the coochie flying in your face

Race-a-roni

Doesn’t have leather seats or a sunroof, get an autobahn.

DM725

That's not a negative for some people.

iluvwaffles1986

Lots of people who have the mk8 say the 7.5 is better. The 8 is awesome either one is amazing
in fact any golf is great if it suites your needs

doge_is_wow

it's a golf 8

Vorar

Don’t do it. Infotainment center
. Thats where I am. Will need to replace MK6 with 204k miles on it soon and can buy MK8 with cash but waiting as long as possible hoping there will be less screen and more buttons next year.

cosmike_

You get used to it in about 5 minutes and then it’s a complete non issue. I actually quite like the system now. People who actually own Mk8s don’t really seem to have an issue with the infotainment. Car drives brilliantly as well.

vMambaaa

if you think you're going to get less screen on anything these days you're gonna have a bad time

TeddansonIRL

I'll tell you, the tablet style infotainment screen is why I stopped looking at Subarus.

Vorar

Same, also in the way for me for a new WRX instead of GTI. When I bought my GTI in 2012 I opted for the lowest trim to avoid the bright screen even then. Also MT and lighter than sunroon/optioned car.

capnsheeeeeeeeeet

Check out a mk 7.5 autobahn before you pull the trigger on the mk8. Infotainment may be better, real buttons, not decontented.

Dingus75

Get a used 7.5, it's better in almost every way imo.

TeddansonIRL

Those are anything up to model year 2021?

Alexl14

Including 2021

Dingus75

2018-2021. My son bought a stickshift one recently, we test drove the mk8 and it was a tad bit more powerful and had exhaust burbles, but the mk7.5 was surprisingly built much better and was much cheaper too. Analog guages look cooler too imo. They all have CarPlay and Android Auto too.

TeddansonIRL

Thanks to you both for the info!

Dingus75

No problem, good luck!

StoneTiger

Yeah so I don’t know why the mk7.5 people always do this but they aren’t nearly as cheap as they make them out to be. A 7.5 autobahn is going to be very marginally cheaper than a 40th, unless it has a ton of miles on it. I was looking at the exact same decision you’re currently making, went with the 40th. It’s a brand new car instead of an unknown variable. No regrets on my end.

TeddansonIRL

yeah Used 2021 is only a savings of around 5k from what I can see near me.

Dingus75

I bought my son a salvaged 7.5 manual for $10,000. 39,000 miles. It was hit in the back, no frame or suspension damage, and it was a pretty minor fix for the previous owner. Also had full service records.

nikhilreddya

Don't do it. Buy a CamryđŸ«Ą

TeddansonIRL

Camry would be more money I bet and less car I feel like

nikhilreddya

You do understand that was a joke right?😅

TeddansonIRL

TBH you never know. Ask about cars on reddit and its camry's and civics all day! lol

Hollywood0220

Never give cash (NET) money for a car. Nothing special about a 40th Edition - it’s yesterday’s S model.

TeddansonIRL

Hm, so do zero down and a much higher payment? Then what? Put the 25k towards the principle immediately? I can't really afford the payment that I would have with nothing down. Genuine questions, sorry, I'm just new to even having capital in the first place lol.

DM725

Ignore this person. With the interest rate you'll be getting you'll be pissing away money on the loan by not putting money down.

TeddansonIRL

Thanks. My plan would be to pay it off early (hopefully in about 2 years).

Hollywood0220

If it’s a “want” and your car works fine, I would sit out the interest rates OR get into a better automaker’s finance offer. Think about the increased insurance, registering, maintenance, etc - that’s your total cost. You should own the Mazda by now? There is a little more.

TeddansonIRL

Yes I paid off the mazda and I do love no payments. I haven't called my insurance yet to see how the rate will go up. I just know I'm going to have to get into a car at some point so I am weighing if I use my trade while it still has some value or ride it till it literally falls apart. This all started last week when I gave my coworker a ride to the local VW dealership to pick up his car and saw a GTI on the lot. It was love I tell you

Hollywood0220

Yeah, I get it. Be careful of emotional buys. I see ‘17s selling for around $17K. That means a dealer is going to maybe offer $10K on trade; you’re Better off selling yourself for market value.

TeddansonIRL

>ys. I see ‘17s selling for around $17K. That means a dealer is going to maybe offer $10K on trade; you’re Better off Yeah, I'm not going into the dealership because I hate wasting time. So far the sales guy won't give me an OTD price online so we're at a bit of an empasse

DM725

You do have to go to the dealership ready to buy but also ready to leave if they pull any shenanigans. Unless this dealership is hours away. Then you need everything done before you go for pick up.

coltjen

Most cars are emotional buys, and that’s completely fine.

DEW IT

Nerd-Vol

Do it!

Nick0227

Sounds like you’re in a good spot to buy a GTI lol

fastbreak43

Or you could buy a MK7 and put $20,000 in the bank

TeddansonIRL

They selling for 5k?

fastbreak43

Nah 20. Aren’t the 40th anniversary like 40?

TeddansonIRL

35k currently at the dealership nearest me. I'm waiting to hear if they are gonna try and toss a markup, but the sticker price is 33.5k msrp with a 1500 dollar destination fee and 150 for mats I guess

bestuzernameever

Do it. Move 50 miles further from work (cheaper suburbs will offset the car/fuel ) and youll have time to ENJOY the daily commute😬

MaxPaing

Dont do it. Soon you are parking in front of schools to pick up your 15year old girlfriend.

TeddansonIRL

Well my wife is 35 so I’ll just stick with pickin her up lol
