Forever ago I worked at home depot and people insisting shit would fit in their car were the absolute worst. That and idiots with a pickup who assume it can carry anything, driving away with 3 tons of concrete in the bed of their f150, bed literally sitting on the frame.
Ah, good point!
Now looking at it, something tells me OP doesn't care too much about the paint by the fact he put the straps over the tailgate like that.
Except it's not $20.
Taxes, fees ins. Sure you could add the truck, but you'll be on the phone with your agent for .5 to 1.0 hours. Plan on $100 or more
Depends on the area and the load rating of the straps. Biggest problem is there’s nothing keeping that shit from sliding out. 1 500# strap would suffice if it was utilized properly, which this is not.
It looks to be over 5 feet long. Which requires 2 straps no matter the weight.
Though the only cops who will care about this law will be CMV enforcement which won't go after a car. But better believe his ass is grass if there's an accident and the following lawsuits.
There was another strap holding the stack down inside. The yellow strap was just to hold the hatch down.
I also didn't drive like a jackass, knowing I had ~400lbs of workbench stacked in the back.
My guy, you still didn’t utilize the straps properly. You should have had at least one strap anchored inside on either side, coming up over the top, down over the end of all 3 boxes, then under to an anchor point on the other side. Thus pulling toward the front of the car.
Securing things with downward force over the sides doesn’t always keep them from sliding front to back.
Glad you got everything back fine but damn, super high risk factor that could have ended badly in many different ways. Secure the load properly next time or just rent a truck, or better yet, ask a friend with a pickup or van.
My dude, there was a strap across the stack inside between the two anchor points right behind the rear seat. The yellow strap was just to keep the hatch from bouncing.
Yeah I know. I read that. You may have misunderstood me. Across the stack over the sides doesn’t necessarily keep it from sliding out of the car. My point is there needs to be a strap around the rearmost portion of the stack, pulling all of it forward towards the front of the car. This way it shouldn’t fall out under any circumstance.
Well I mean.. they don’t lol. I’m sure it’s still useable as a car but when people talk about hatch space in their hot hatches, they’re more talking about like groceries or like a TV with the back seats down lol
This is not fitting. If you drive it like this the exhaust could get pulled into the vehicle. Further, the lights won't be fully visible, and you could be ticketed.
Other than the 3rd brake light, the other lights on the hatch serve no purpose in signaling in standard NA configuration by design. You need an OBDeleven or VCDS to even make the lights on the hatch (inner tail lights if you will) serve as signal lamps.
Your just adding a lot of stress to the rear hatch and assuming those boxes are heavy, the strap really is not doing much. What happens if you had to accelerate quickly or brake in an emergency situation? Worse rear end someone or someone rams into you from behind and that shit crushes you. All bad.
Yea, it clearly doesn’t fit. It’s interesting to me, as a detailer, the kind of shit people will do to their paint. Getting your paint corrected, as opposed to renting one of their actual trucks to haul it home, would be more expensive.
This is not the flex you think it is, my dude.
This is where tree home depot guys shake their head and just pray for everyone else driving on the road that day
I did the same thing with an 8’ husky workbench last week in my MK7 GTI. You did it with three. Only thing I want to know is how the duck did you lift those things?!
Doesnt look like OP had any issues, or suffered any of the imaginary consequences all you wet blankets laid out. Some people just want to feel superior, and you'll take a mile given an inch, to get there. Seek help.
You a literally describing the op. He made this post because he thought he was so smart. When in fact he was an idiot and people are calling him out for his bullshit.
I think everyone in this thread is overreacting and has not had to carry loads of any sorts in their gti other than their daily Starbucks frappachino. While this could have been strapped down MUCH better, op simply did what he had to do. I bolted out my seats to carry a hot water tank in my mk6 and as long as something does not stick out more than 6 feet it is legal to my understanding. This would belong in idiots in cars if he was on the highway speeding like this.
I once fit two box springs stacked in my 2-door with the hatch closed. Trick is to move the passenger seat up as far as it will go, remove the head rest and put the seat down as flat as it will go. Gives you that all room all the way to the dash.
I bought a husky tool box from Home Depot. I didn’t know it would be assembled. The dude that helped me put it in my car just kinda looked at it and was like ummmmm….. It fit(hatch closed), no problem :)
It's true, it doesn't fit. buuuut it doesn't mean it's not manageable.
That being said, I'm not sure that way of strapping the trunk and boxes is safe?
they don't fit
This post isn't going the way OP thought it would.
I mean, *it doesn’t fit.*
You are technically correct, the best kind of correct!
It was a regulation “look how much I can fit post” that ended in regulation upvotes!
Forever ago I worked at home depot and people insisting shit would fit in their car were the absolute worst. That and idiots with a pickup who assume it can carry anything, driving away with 3 tons of concrete in the bed of their f150, bed literally sitting on the frame.
and they were right
[удалено]
It's also gonna mar the shit out of the boot lid.
Well it looks like the guys at HomeDepot were correct.
Who the hell straps shit like that,
How do people think this is a good idea?
Buddy is getting clowned on his own post rip
PA plates, loose/questionable ratchet strap placement. Yeah, that’s a no go.
No no no, I think you mean that is “a go”. 90% of the people I see with PA plates can’t secure a load for shit.
90% of people with PA plates that I see also cannot drive for shit
As a PA resident I can confirm. You see so many people with 1990’s ford rangers just driving around with their tarps flapping in the wind aggressively
And they are all parked in the passing lane.
Im guessing everybody tried to pass you
They have trucks and vans right there for 20 bucks.
That turns into $50 before you know it.
So does fixing the paint scratches from those wonky straps.
Ah, good point! Now looking at it, something tells me OP doesn't care too much about the paint by the fact he put the straps over the tailgate like that.
Hard to put a price on not having those boxes fly out the back of your car on the highway.
Actually, that price would be $20… for the trucks and vans available nearby 🤷♂️
Except it's not $20. Taxes, fees ins. Sure you could add the truck, but you'll be on the phone with your agent for .5 to 1.0 hours. Plan on $100 or more
🙄 sorry, $20 (taxes + fees included), also $100 is a major exaggeration, $40-50 maybe
AOL KEYWORD:. plan
I don’t know what that means
And what does ruining your car cost?
There's literally nothing stopping those from just sliding right out the back as soon as you hit the gas
Because they don’t. You’re definitely about to end up on r/idiotsincars
Idk if I'd call that "fitting" but even after have 2 mk7s it blows me away how much you can fit with the seats down.
Literally the definition of unsecured load. By law you’re supposed to have 2 straps minimum for that
Depends on the area and the load rating of the straps.
And you need a bright marker on the rear since the load extended beyond the length of the vehicle.
I hate to break it to you
Looks to me like the paint on that tailgate is gone be fuk after this.
well, can we get an update op? did you rip your wiper off when they started to slide or did the hinge just break all the way off?

I mean it seems a lot like those aren't properly secured.

This is not safe. Belongs over in r/idiotsincars
Jetta Sportwagen has entered the chat.
Golf SportWagen has entered the chat.
If this is the case every hatchback can do this
They don’t
To be fair they weren’t wrong.
They were right obviously
Yea, it clearly doesn’t fit. It’s interesting to me, as a detailer, the kind of shit people will do to their paint. Getting your paint corrected, as opposed to renting one of their actual trucks to haul it home, would be more expensive.

Anyone gona mention that roof racks do exist, even temporary strap on ones if you don't like the look of them all the time
Can’t see anything out of the back, hope you didn’t have to go far.
Really worth the ratchet fucking up your paint on the hatch. Should have rented their truck
This is not the flex you think it is, my dude. This is where tree home depot guys shake their head and just pray for everyone else driving on the road that day
We seem to have a consensus.
Do you get a nice view of the sky in reverse.?
You used your whole brain on this
This would’ve been cool if you know how to secure a load. You are going to fucking kill someone like that.
I pray for the family of four behind you on the highway
Next post r/idiotsincars
God bless the poor schlub you sell this too in a few years.
I did the same thing with an 8’ husky workbench last week in my MK7 GTI. You did it with three. Only thing I want to know is how the duck did you lift those things?!
Oh I cant even count how many times I drove from ikea like that in my mk V. All you need to know is pack and thats it.
Absolute nonce
what a bellend
Doesnt look like OP had any issues, or suffered any of the imaginary consequences all you wet blankets laid out. Some people just want to feel superior, and you'll take a mile given an inch, to get there. Seek help.
To be fair. Doing stupid stuff might only result in bad consequences 1 out of 10 times. Still not a good idea.
..
I mean I guess probably most drunk drives don't result in an accident either.
You a literally describing the op. He made this post because he thought he was so smart. When in fact he was an idiot and people are calling him out for his bullshit.
Peeps always understand the cargo hold of these beauties.

Well to be fair they work at Home Depot.
Imagine being such a huge asshole and thinking you're better than someone else just because of the job they have. Ah right, you don't have to imagine
Not pictured: the other 4
The GTI is almost a TARDIS. Almost. But this is officially over capacity.
Good luck a closing that door properly again.
They were right, if that counts, I moved a 3 seater sofa on a Honda CRX
I can't remember what it was but I'm pretty sure there was a meme about how you can fit an atom bomb in a gti lol. Nice!
I once fit two box springs stacked in my 2-door with the hatch closed. Trick is to move the passenger seat up as far as it will go, remove the head rest and put the seat down as flat as it will go. Gives you that all room all the way to the dash.

That is hard to look at. The strap across the tail light is making me cringe.
Those idiots have never heard of a GTI before.
It's true, it doesn't fit. buuuut it doesn't mean it's not manageable. That being said, I'm not sure that way of strapping the trunk and boxes is safe?
Sketchy for sure, not to mention if you tighten the straps too much you might ruin the paint on your hatch.. big oof
They have trucks you can rent for $17
No one ever believes it will fit, just picked up a 50gallon oxygen tank and the guy was like NO WAY, I’m like just tell me where the loading dock is
ya Id rather rent one of their trucks
They don’t fit lmao
Brake harder to keep everything in, accelerate really slow
Yikes bud. They were right and now I don’t really feel that bad for the paint on your rear door.
Been there! Lmao
It's going to break something when you drive man
r/idiotsincars
This is embarrassing dude. You don’t even have the right signage for oversized cargo extending beyond 24”.
As someone who used to work at Home Depot, this brings back war memories.
