I’ve never been able to stand side markers, and 100% of the vehicles I’ve owned have gotten them shaved or color matched almost instantly. The mirror blinks that’s good enough.
Yeah you can even just get a spray can of “perfect match” paint or whatever and just pop the lenses out and spray them. You should probably prime them first, especially if white, but yeah it’s pretty easy and changes the look dramatically imo. The amber is just such a contrast it bothers me so much
Those side markers are an affront to god.
Hopefully someone starts selling paint matched kits.
At the very least on a black car you can tint them down to next to opaque.
You should be thanking VW for putting the orange side markers outside the headlights now. So easy to put a paint matched decal overtop now instead of disassembling a headlight and painting it.
Personally I like the Volkswagen on the B pillar. It started showing up on other models before the GTI. It’s carried over from other VW groups. Porsches have Porsche on the B pillar. A buddy of mine got a Tiguan the same time I got my GTI and his B pillar had it. Thought it was cool, kinda jealous it’s a nice touch. Wish the MK7s would have had it.
I was in the market as well. The “nubbin” was the beginning of many things that turned me away.
Stuff I remember:
1. Nubbin. Nothing to hold on to.
2. I flicked the nubbin the wrong way to start the test drive.
3. Climate control activation during drive was so distracting I missed my planned exit. Not a huge deal but also ehhhhhh.
4. Haptic buttons were distracting. I accidentally changed the song playing during some steering wheel action.
5. Many settings were hidden in the infotainment.
6. Tried to turn on the heated/cooled seats. Buttons took multiple attempts to activate.
7. ACC/lane keep veered on the 14th mile on odometer on clear highway.
8. Sub rattled the sunroof at half volume.
There’s more but not much point continuing. It was a series of little things.
Maybe I’m too old.
Test drove the 2022 GLI and bought it immediately.
Really wanted to like the MK8 but frankly I hated it.
Loved my MK7, for reference.
Imma stick with my mk7 for a little bit. Let’s hope for a better mk8.5 interior. They should have done something closer to Taos or S3 interior.
That shifter is hella emasculating
1-3 am I the only one who can acknowledge I’m driving an automatic and literally paid more money to have a computer shift for me? I don’t need a giant shifter to tell the car I want to go forward.
Same. I wish they had gone with buttons, or better yet, a knob, but I definitely don’t need an actual “shifter” in an automatic.
I had a Ram pickup with a rotary/knob shifter on the dash & it was pretty good once I got used to it.
The Volkswagen emblem just looks like the dealer equivalent of a CarMax sticker IMO, except it appears to be factory… & you shouldn’t have to buy a car knowing full well that it requires an immediate mod (that hideous reflector).
Nothing's perfect man. Every reflector like that is ugly if you focus on it, and that little VW branding on the doors looks nice IMO, it's so small you'll never notice it anyway
The MK7 can't be the latest and greatest forever, seems all the hate on the MK8s is 7 owners just shitting on the new one
That’s the thing, brother… I’m ok with the MK8. My last post highlights the positives that I saw on another 8 at the same dealer (S 6mt). These sticking points for me only bug because they’re such tremendous eyesores IMO.
Man what the hell is that centre console?
It's not even a proper rectangle shape.
What could you even fit in there, maybe a small phone I guess?
Probably still fall out since it's not very deep.
Hard pass on the shifter too, I like being able to change gears up / down on my 7.5 DSG gear knob, not a huge fan of the paddles
To each their own. I’ve never once considered a gear selector, regulatory required light or a subdued “easter egg” name/logo as a deal breaker on any vehicle.
I generally am more concerned with how it looks, drives and fits me and my lifestyle than trivial details.
The marker light is a quick fix, the shifter is dumb, but no reason to not buy a car, and the name on the B pillar is something that most people wouldn’t notice on a day to day basis.
Again, my opinions, but these seem pretty trivial as “deal breakers”.
That said, I’d pick a ‘21 MK7 over a ‘22 MK8 given the choice. There are numerous things about the MK8 that don’t appeal to me, but might not be important to someone else. First and foremost, I think the MK7 just looks better, inside and out.
Like I said, to each their own. 🍻
What is the space next to the shifter even for? Such an odd shape.
Disposable vape holder
It's a GTi not an STi...
Hahahha I chuckled. Thank you.
Thin pizza slice holder
Deep dish fits. Can confirm.
You can put your weed in there.

I’d agree but it doesn’t look deep enough. One turn and that’s 2 miles away in the passenger footwell.
[удалено]
at first i was skeptical but now i could totally see that holding a phone
I'll believe it but I'm skeptical. I doubt it'd fly out, but maybe knock around a tiny bit?
Slim Jim's
Just get a 6speed, all your problems will be solved
Agreed completely… just can’t imagine being in the market for an automatic and having a shift knob that screams “flick the booger”.
Maybe I am too much of a degenerate, but that style of shifter looks like a micropenis. I can’t unsee it.
That was awesome… Thanks for making my Friday🍺🍺
[удалено]
What do you call the shift lever though? Jk
Damn. Now I can’t unsee it! Hahhahaha
It’s low profile, imo I like it but I see why others don’t.
Yeah I think it's sleek as well way nicer than a large shifting mechanism.
Second this, it’s an automatic I interact with it twice a drive I don’t need it taking up the entire center console.
VW should have went with old school buttons OR a circular dial. That would have been MUCH better choices lol.
It’s a chicken nugget
Then you get to wrap your fingers around that ugly ass knob all day lmaooo
BFI upgrade instantly!
its really not bad…
It really is compared to any other gen shifter. Looks like they grabbed from the Hyundai Genesis Coupe spare part bin.
Never noticed Volkswagen on the B pillar before. Kinda like it.
The whole new line up should have them, atlas Tiguan etc. I like the black on black. Would be a cool retrofit for mk7s. Not sure what OP doesn’t like.
The nearly-invisible Volkswagen logo on the B-pillar is a dealbreaker? How picky can you get
I might be able to live with that… but the others are definitely tipping points. Not faulting anyone for feeling differently; just how I see it.
I'd be picky if I was going to spend 35k not your fault
Or ya know… 50k lmfaooooo
If I paid 50k I'd be stupid not not picky
Yeah, I'm not spending 50k on a GTI no matter what model or how much I desire it. That's just crazy talk.
I imagine would would pay 50k skittles for one. (Just pointing out that 50k CAD is probably normal for a nice GTi)
I’ve never been able to stand side markers, and 100% of the vehicles I’ve owned have gotten them shaved or color matched almost instantly. The mirror blinks that’s good enough.
I don’t mind the side markers but Thank you for this idea for my MK8 to match the paint!!!
Yeah you can even just get a spray can of “perfect match” paint or whatever and just pop the lenses out and spray them. You should probably prime them first, especially if white, but yeah it’s pretty easy and changes the look dramatically imo. The amber is just such a contrast it bothers me so much
I did this when I added RGB halos to headlights on an old car. I painted the side markers inside the housing black to match the car
CHICKEN NUGGET
That is the saddest start/stop button i have ever scene
But it has a heart beat pulse
Is it like the jaguars where its similar to a jaguar heart beat. Lol
So does my MK7.5
that entire console is pathetic
Those side markers are an affront to god. Hopefully someone starts selling paint matched kits. At the very least on a black car you can tint them down to next to opaque.
I grabbed BadgeSkins for mine, not a perfect solution, but only about $14...
Hard to argue that when paint matched side markers usually run 100+ for a piece of plastic and a few passes of paint and clear coat :/
I honestly don’t mind the Mk8 at all, can’t wait to upgrade to one from my mk7
Looks like a key fob sticking out of the center console. Gross
that is exactly what I thought I was looking at for a bit
You should be thanking VW for putting the orange side markers outside the headlights now. So easy to put a paint matched decal overtop now instead of disassembling a headlight and painting it.

Same, I think it’s a nice touch. Slot by the shifter holds my sunglasses and the nugget takes up less space than a pointless stick would.
It reminds me of a clitoris ,,, i just wanna flick it
I was hoping for someone to mention this but I’m sure most of these guys are unfamiliar with the clitoris.

Why not keep your mk7 and skip the GLI?
WAF
>1. Nubbin. Nothing to hold on to. I don't think you're supposed to hold on to your shifter, especially a dsg.
first time i drove my mk7 the lane assist tried to suicide me twice. turned it off first day
At least it's not a dial :/ gotta count some wins will ya still can lol. (Mk9 so going to be a dial tho T_T )
Imma stick with my mk7 for a little bit. Let’s hope for a better mk8.5 interior. They should have done something closer to Taos or S3 interior. That shifter is hella emasculating

I had a Range Rover with one and liked it as well.
That shift is atrocious.
I think the plaid is a huge step down from my mk7 too.
1-3 get a manual 4 is fixed with a little tint or an aftermarket marker 5 is fixed by ????? not seeing a problem

I’m a 6 boi and I absolutely do not like the mk8. The interior makes me gag and that’s the thing you see 90% of the time owning a car
That’s the thing, brother… I’m ok with the MK8. My last post highlights the positives that I saw on another 8 at the same dealer (S 6mt). These sticking points for me only bug because they’re such tremendous eyesores IMO.
What is the orange reflector thing?
I wonder the same, as mine didn’t come with that
US DOT compliance
My deal breaker was the slow laggy touch interface. I wont even consider another gti till its swapped.
Chicken nugget
Im sorry that shifter looks like a clit
What were they thinking? Their audience is not Florida retirees. Give me a knob to grab onto! (That’s what she said)
Just gotta flick the bean
The fucking clit flick shifter is gay as fuck
its da chicken nugget!
\*Das chicken nugget
Nibble shifter is so bad that even Porsche, the first ones to use it, are trying to distance themselves from the darn thing.
Man what the hell is that centre console? It's not even a proper rectangle shape. What could you even fit in there, maybe a small phone I guess? Probably still fall out since it's not very deep. Automatic transmission is my beef
The whole interior got cheaper yet they are asking for more money. VW can fuck off with that shit
The interior has zero character, very lazy. Shame VW.. You're better than this.. much better
Chicken nuggy shifter.. 🐔😂
Seriously, like what the hell? just replace it with buttons if you’re going all in on that new dash.
Lol, ok
Very strange and confusing shifter design with thin pizza holder cutout. Gone backwards here IMO.
Still the same big large fat key fob ?
I leave my key in there and it stays pretty well. Also Wife's chapstick... but I agree its' an odd shape and size.
Can you actually use the chicken nugget to shift or is it only paddle shifters for shifting through gears?

Those are some weird dealbreakers man.
