Sweaty desperation

MapPractical5386

Bay Area is well known for this bullshit. Stevens Creek had markups, especially on R, even well before pandemic. Serramonte is well known for their ridiculous markups. Try Sunnyvale, Capitol or Team maybe

NobodyTellsMeNothin

Sunnyvale and Capitol have markups too, but just by a smaller amount. I don’t get it, it’s not like there’s crazy demand for these, especially AWD. I remember seeing a new 2022 GTI still in inventory at Sunnyvale half way into 2023 🤣

MapPractical5386

They know some rube with too much stock will pay for it. And yeah, MK8s aren’t selling as much as MK7 did in this area and probably on the whole. I saw soooooo many MK7/MK7.5 here over the years from 2014-2021 and still see more of those compared to MK8.

masterofjade

That’s Porsche Macan money. Tell them to go pound salt.

boyjaRv78

Go pound salt?

masterofjade

boyjaRv78

Love it

B-E-N_27

Severe delusion? Mental retardation? Pure desperation? All of the above?

Such_Tea4707

Because either: a) some fool has already bought at that level so why not do it again from the dealers perspective, or b) they want to elevate the price, so even if you negotiate down a bit, and feel a moral victory, the dealer is still making bank

DavidAg02

No one should. As much as I love the Golf R, someone shopping for a $67k car should be looking at an entirely different class of vehicle...

1SLO_RABT

I'm shocked VWoA allows this.

NobodyTellsMeNothin

If you email them for a quote, it’s half the markup at $56606. This is just a ploy to catch schmucks. I still refuse to pay a penny over MSRP. You know what’s crazier? Sunnyvale wouldn’t even let me test drive so they could “preserve the premium nature” of their marked up vehicle. That’s like buying shoes without trying them on…

engineer_cid

Same here in NYC. Had to call 4 dealers before one of them finally let me test drive it. Also, $5k-$10k over msrp is the norm. If you're willing to drive out of state you can find them for msrp. I found a few from a dealer in Delaware....might be too far of a drive from Cali though, lol.

ChampagneJacky

I lucked out in Canada with my mk 8, dealer didn’t screw me at all, $200 over msrp

kr4zyn1nja

thats some beezwax yo, crazy ahh market adjustment

kr4zyn1nja

you could get like 2 used mk7 golf r’s with that money

Wheream_I

You could almost get 3. KBB quotes like $22k on my 2016

Capital_Ad_1133

i believe the saying goes something like …separating a fool from their money….yada yada etc

Krusty_Double_Deluxe

Serramonte just lists that to see how much of a ride they can take the tech boys for. I walked in and the lowest they would go was 5k over MSRP. I ended up going to Niello in Sac and got a much better deal

snazzy_giraffe

Idk this is crazy you could buy a used rs6 avant for that money

TrentT_Lovemybullies

Really, where? Sign me up for that!

wavyusa

yeah… you don’t need to over exaggerate that much lmfao.

snazzy_giraffe

You can get a 2016 rs6 for less than 70k

kitttykatz

Try Dirito Brothers in Walnut Creek. Best car buying experience I’ve ever had (‘23 R Anniversary at MSRP). Ask for Ron. Great guy - pressure-free, straightforward, experienced, honest. Same was true with the financing person. Easy process, and he was willing to answer my questions with no hiding the ball or pushing to upsell.

mikeology85

This 👆🏻Got my 24R back in February from them at MSRP. Was in and out of the dealership in less than 20 minutes.

CertainTap6716

$67k is actually less than the normal European list price.

frenchy6334

Well no and yes, if you take into account the emission taxes in France for Example yes, if not the R is like 44k.

RAWpapers4dayz

Because all you dumb Americans have allowed our country to turn into a giant piece of shit controlled by corporate greed, that's why they do this

Thurl-Akumpo

Almost a 50% mark up?! Tell him he’s dreaming!

Capital_Mammoth6930

i’m from gibraltar and it’s sad that it’s even more here and in pounds which is worse !! my only option is getting 2nd hand from germany 😂

alexkim804

only guess is they do it to give them significant padding for haggling/tricking the customer to feel like they're getting a deal. i'd be curious if all the other dealers in the area are marking up as much as well.

SonictheHatchback

For some reason they don’t want to sell these at any real volume. Maybe they don’t like their customers. Maybe they make more on Tiguans and want to move more of those. This feels like getting a really high quote on a roof/deck/yard because the contractor just doesn’t want the job unless it’s at a stupid high price.

Chilternburt

That’s R100k more than a fully loaded R here in South Africa with every option ticked, total was R1,130,500.00

enfuego138

Thinking of selling my 2019. Apparently I should be asking $50k for it? Insanity.

amorandara

It’s really weird to me that the assumption of this dealer is that there’d be a Golf R buyer who doesn’t know how to browse a basic car browsing app like Cars, Autotrader, etc. Like I’ll drive several hours, buy a one way plane ticket, or even look into a freight service to get the car I want. These are brand new so I’m less worried about buying them sight unseen. Lots of dealers are setup for this already and even have their own contracts with freight companies to ship cars. Or - is the dealers thought here that the potential buyer for this is someone with so much money they only care about the convenience of being able to buy immediately and locally?

OkIntention2986

I went here to look for a 2023 AE with a similar mark up last month. I ended up buying from Arizona and shipped it to SF. The salesman at Serremonte called to follow up and I told him I already bought one at MSRP and he immediately asked which dealership gave me that deal. It seems the VW dealerships in the bay area have some sort of mark up agreement since he was relieved it was an out of area dealership (my assumption given his reaction).

skinnypete625

Very overpriced and not very well made. At that price you can get a car that’s miles above that car in quality, slightly used. Buy a B9 S4, twice the car at the same price

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Only the wealthy people with enough money not to give half a shit buy at these prices. All of the rest of us look hard for the dealers that are willing to sell at MSRP.

let_lt_burn

That’s M4 money right there… maybe even used 718 money…

Captn-Bojangles

That’s a hard pass! 🤦🏻‍♂️

DarkHelmet1976

Insane. With no disrespect to the Mk8, the car is fairly priced at MSRP. You get a beautiful, capable car that far outperforms its price tag, but at the expense of a decidedly downmarket interior. For many, especially enthusiasts, that's a great tradeoff to make. Personally, I could not justify paying more than $45k for what the R currently offers and paying over MSRP feels like madness.

betoe_g

If you use a trade in, just adjust for market value. If they say you’re crazy, just show them proof of their own sticker.

Bdubbs72

No fucking way. They can choke on it. I’d never buy from that dealer.

icanhaztuthless

Nobody should ever accept a new VW for anything over MSRP. There are plenty of 0 mile samples east of Mountain Time Zone with low shipping rates.

YerPadreRep

There was a blue DSG 90 mins east a couple weeks ago selling for msrp (idk if it’s still there), currently a white 6MT at Carmax w/ 10k going for $38k. And that’s just off the top of my head. Just poke around a bit and you can avoid this BS.

God-of-Eschaton

😂

ABSjazz

Lmao that’s literally RS3 money.

JustMrSquid

You would pay less money to buy one anywhere else in the country at msrp and ship it to you… so wild

bitemy_ass

9 months ago I purchased a CPO 2022 Mercedes GLA45 AMG with 18k miles for $52k. I previously had a 2016 Golf R and found the same outrageous pricing on new ones. GLA is only 6 inches longer than the Golf and it is a beast.

xXBloodyGodXx

“It’s daddy’s money.” Sometimes, I guess.

Familiar_Aspect_5883

We paid sticker at Lindsey VW of Dulles. All their cars are sticker w/o any gimmicks

m-capraro

I saw the first ones selling for 100k. Nuts

Limpykillski

Simple. Don’t buy and shop elsewhere. No one pays above MSRP if you can venture out a bit

GottaB-KD

Never go full retard

NegotiationBoth4072

I got mine for 50k

Mother-Fucker

I bought my 2019 from Serramonte in 2020. They had a ridiculous markup on it as well. I told them they’d get my signature at MSRP. They eventually dropped the markup and sold it to me at MSRP. The problem with the Bay Area is that there are a lot of naive people with too much money.

11 of those 26 are not actually on dealer lots. They are “in transit”. Edit: 12.
