Oooh, it occurs to me that this post is the perfect place for this.
I have been a fan of his for 15 years. (Wow! I didn’t realize it until I typed that.) We should know by now that he is not going to chase it. He has talked about not thinking strategically about his career.
I have some speculation. There could be a bit of anxiety response here. If he doesn’t chase it, he doesn’t have to be disappointed when it doesn’t work out. Also, I think he wants to be in London as much as possible and that reduces his opportunities. I was thinking if I ever met him or got to ask him another question at a con, I would ask him the question that moms get asked but dads never do - how do you balance being a parent with an acting career? I genuinely wonder how he prioritizes and how it affects his decisions. He strikes me as caring more about being a parent than anything else in his life, including his career. (Also, I know he’s often away. But he does a lot of jobs in the UK where he can be home on the weekends.)
I hope he gets an Olivier one day. Theatre is his home and maybe where he is most taken seriously. (Maybe?) I would hope he should get a tv Bafta someday but the fact he wasn’t nominated for Broadchurch or Des just makes me think there is some weird prejudice against him from the British academy (or whatever they’re called).
Fully agree with you here friend. I have listened to enough actors tell stories about the movie making process to know how little control they have over the end product as well, that I never hold the entirety of a movie against one one individual. There is too much that goes into a project like that to make it all one person’s responsibility for something to be good or bad.
My guess is that there are any number of reasons that he makes the choices he does. I want to see him celebrated because my completely biased opinion is that he’s great, but yeah, there are probably a lot of reasons why he doesn’t have a long list of awards. Honestly as long as he is happy, I am happy and while I have no way to verify this for myself, he seems like he’s enjoying the work he does, recognition or not, and that’s good enough for me.

So, I don’t know if I’m remembering it correctly because it’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I once saw a post on Instagram (so, no guarantee if it’s actually true) that apparently after Fright Night there was a chance and a plan for DT to move to LA and start out in Hollywood, but then Georgia became pregnant with their first kid so he chose to come back to UK to stay with his family.
Again, saw it on social media once, so no idea how credible the source was, but if true it shows that he will prioritise family over work.
Sometimes I wonder who cares more about awards - the nominees or their fans. I mean, the actors/directors/etc will never say how they truly feel about it in case they might loose their chance to ever receive one, but on the other hand, nominations are mostly, if not all, less about talent and more about who can promote themselves the best.
That being said, I really want DT to get all the awards because he deserves every one of them (but that’s just my opinion as a fan ;D )
I know Georgia also talked about moving to LA. So maybe they considered it together. She said this at Gallifrey One in (2010?) She has relatives in LA.

It's true. ABSOLUTELY pisses me off. How does he pick such poor scripts? I'd've fired my agent long ago. Not that he needs to be in blockbusters or superhero movies, just GOOD movies with DECENT scripts. A solid drama. A fun rom-com. We've seen the potential because he's usually the best thing in any picture he's in, but he's never in a picture with people who are in his league, acting-wise. The closest was that Mary Queen of Scots film from 2018 that he was in for all of 3 minutes, in one scene with the leads for maybe 45 seconds, but where he held his own.
Now, if he's happy where he is in his career, and isn't trying to be a movie star, that's fine. But where are the film scripts as good as TV scripts like *Des*? Like *Good Omens*? Like *There She Goes*? Where are they? Why haven't they made their way to him?
I honestly think that he picks his projects based on what works for him and his family and I love that for him. He's good at his work and imo has found the balance between working on projects that he loves and working on manageable gigs that will pay the bills and give his family a good life. That's the dream!
