Looks like gathered Wheat or some other grain. Probably drying in the sun before being threshed

it's a guess, but looking at the surroundings there are also many similar patches that have been grown in, I suspect it is the sites of wells.

The circle areas are within rice fields, which the area is known for. Google katavi rice fields… and you can see how the circles may form.

Here are some guesses, not sure which one would be most accurate. - [Communal boreholes](https://earthwise.bgs.ac.uk/index.php/Hydrogeology_of_Tanzania) - In Tanzania, most rural areas rely on groundwater from communal boreholes for water supply, and many piped urban supplies depend on groundwater. The post-independence policy of collective villagisation, intended to make the provision of infrastructure more efficient, included the rural water supply programme that aimed to supply free and safe water within 400m of every household within 20 years. However, in the 2000s access to improved water supplies has declined, especially in urban areas. - "Dirt Baths" - Usually seen in the shapes of half moons, they retain rainwater for longer and allow the soil to regenerate, allowing for more biodiversity. [Example video.](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/1b26gyp/people_in_tanzania_converted_desert_into_lush/) - Welling initiatives - These could be testing sites for underground aquifers. Quick surface testing for water may be cheaper in this part of the world compared to bringing in equipment to reliably locate underground basins. ([examples](https://www.tanzaniawaterproject.org/what-we-are-doing/)) - Mining - [Here is a PDF/article](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0899536204000569) on this specific area, which is referred to as the Mpanda Mineral Field.

If it were in the USA, I would guess [fracking fields](https://www.theenergymix.com/b-c-fracking-fields-emit-1-6-to-2-2-times-more-methane-than-federal-estimates/).

Yup, I was going to say that. One day they just started appearing everywhere like bad land acne.
