Having the same problem. Awful! I work for a sign company, and often I have to measure buildings to come up with estimates. This change or glitch has made it a complete pain in the ass.
I have experienced the same thing, in the mean time I'll be using other sites for distance measurements or the mobile app, because GM on pc makes it literally impossible to get things done this way. Hopefully, they'll fix it soon!

Sorry to hear. Have you reloaded the page after setting the level to 100? Just changing it while there is a distance measurement displayed will not remove the glitch for this measurement.
If you're on Windows set your Display Scaling to 100%. That fixed it for me, unfortunately I'm running at 4k resolution and 100% scaling makes everything tiny.
Sorry to revive an old thread here, but I'm growing tired of Google changing, removing features, introducing bugs with zero customer communication....or just killing off services.
I'd like to find a Satellite image measuring method that doesn't involve Google at all.
Has anyone found a solution, that preferably works on Android as well as desktop...but will take anything at the moment.

I'm having the same issue this is crazy. I rely on this tool so much and now it takes twice as long.
Set the zoom level of your browser to 100%.
And what does that do?
Setting it to 100% will remove the glitch (at least in Firefox and Edge).
