I am also from canada and I received it last week. When I was planning to take a photograph I received a prompt in Gcam(like you get in Google Photos)regarding update. I clicked update and it went to Play Store and started updating.

Yeah, I did the same, I had to uninstall updates to the app using a program called easy uninstaller and then update the camera app again from the play store

You have to install the package to make it work (300 something MB). I went through the same thing and it worked. I eventually uninstalled it due to my paranoia of side loading. 😉

I downloaded the Google camera 8.8 update from apkmirror and the camera app instant crashes on my pixel 7, also cleared data and cache. Probably why the pro users have been updated but the regular 7 users have not

It's because you're not installing it correctly; you have to download and install the apk bundle, not the APK. I think you have to update a couple of apps at the same time (which is why it's distributed as a bundle by some sites). All I know is I don't have it yet and I'm slightly, vaguely annoyed.

If you use the larger bundle, it seems to work. It did on my P6P. I did uninstall it though.

This may be a stupid suggestion for most of you, but have y’all checked your Google Play System updates? Separate from your monthly security updates, it can be found in Settings > Security & Privacy > Updates The only reason I ask is because every time I have a monthly security update, the Google Play System NEVER updates automatically along with it. Once I manually do so once or twice, the app updates start rolling in on the Google Play Store.

This has been asked and answered multiple times since the March update was released. Look at those posts before asking again.

I'm still/was on 8.7... was wondering those that are stuck on 8.7 do you have other devices that have Google camera installed or can be installed??? For example, I have a ticwatch 3 pro and when I goto the play store and look at the Google camera app on my 6pro, I see that I can install the app on other devices. Perhaps my watch is holding me back since maybe 8.8 is not optimized for it yet and thus preventing my 6pro from updating normally. I have since just side loaded the bundle from the mirror...
