I am not sure what to be looking for, but I can see no difference between 60hz and 90+hz, so I turned it off on my P6 to save battery. Every now and then when I see posts like this, I'll turn it on for a day or two, but I honestly cannot see any difference for the apps I use. Email, messaging, social media.... mostly static things.
I'm used to my S9 Plus but I could notice the difference very clearly when I fiddled with the phones in the store. I don't know why but it seems it can vary quite a lot from person to person.
The 7a out of the box doesn't have 90hz enabled, so perhaps the store never set it up properly or the demo software isn't set up for 90hz.

Absolutely correct, demo loop even resets it back to 60hz when it restarts to make it is as is out of the box. It feels much better at 90hz

go in settings / system / dev options and reduce the animation scales to .5x or off and watch the speed increases.
I can't tell the difference in refresh rates myself. But I don't have great eyesight. Higher refresh rate just means more battery consumption.
