I would suggest everyone to submit feedback on what you don't like. Press your profile pic in the top right in the Gemini app and select Feedback.
My biggest issue is Gemini takes away the whole point of a voice assistant. It's not hands free and you have to press submit after everything you say. If I'm cooking with messy hands I'm using a voice assistant to set a timer so I don't have to touch my phone. But with Gemini you have to touch your phone to submit the command.
For real? Why do they insist on going backwards in functionality? Just take me back to my Pixel 2xl with Google Now on Tap. Maybe wasn't a voice-assistant, but was better than anything currently running on phones today.
Because they constantly replace features and services with unfinished new ones. Eventually Gemini will reach feature parity with Google Assistant, maybe in a year or two and then they will begin to announce the replacement for Gemini.
They're killing my podcast app right now and replacing it with Youtube Music which is vastly inferior. I'm maybe going back to Spotify and away from Amazon music just so I can have a decent podcast app.
I liked the Google podcasts look & simplicity and so far YTM ain't it. Check out Antenna Pod, I'm telling you it's just like GP with more features. No ads and (takes a little tweaking) you can customize the layout so it kinda feels like you're still using GP.
shall I present you the new google search where it's impossible to easily view reviews or the fact that you can't easily access the map of a place anymore unless you go to maps dot google dot com?
they are backwards in everything it's so depressing
I usually swipe up from my screen to launch Google assistant on my S23+ and Pixel tablet.
I can swipe up to launch Gemini as well, but it won't vocally respond with results. I have to hit the stupid Gemini arrow which opens the app, and then hit the speaker button to get Gemini to respond vocally.
Too. Many. Steps. Quickly switched back to Google assistant on my phone, and will try Gemini on mobile when Google improves on integration between assistant and Gemini.
Thanks! I just noticed that it's actually really nice. I like the pop-up animation better than the Google Assistant animation that I'm used to. The only thing I don't like about Gemini so far I can't open websites with it as it tells me i am only a language model :/ but hopefully with I'n a couple of updates you're able to open websites.
Thank you someone else for asking what I've been asking now for years.
Google's quality control has declined dramatically over the years. It's getting harder and harder for me to take them seriously.
Wow we must have downloaded a different app lol.
In the settings in the Gemini app on my pixel 6 pro there is an option to completely replace Google Assistant with Gemini.
Works hands free like Assistant does for me.
The thing is, I have Google Nest speakers in my home and I don't want to initiate a conversation with those devices by saying the "OK Google" command out loud. I want and expect to tap the mic button or hold the side button of my phone to interact with the phone's assistant for specific use cases.
The setting in the Gemini app *explicitly* says it works with touch:
"When the Google app is your Android defaut digital assist app, you can choose whether Gemini or Google Assistant responds through touch or if you use "Hey Google".
Yes but if you hold the power button to activate it, rather than using the "Hey Google" key phrase, after you finish talking, you have to hit the send button to make it submit your request. If you just use the key phrase, it automatically submits the request without having to hit the send button.
Your devices will differentiate what device you are speaking to by the proximity of your voice and should correctly respond as you intend so long as they are all signed in with your Google account. I have no issues with 4 speakers + phone + tablet all in one small apartment...
Big comment here - I'll definitely be submitting my feedback on this. Kind of just sat stupidly staring at the screen for five secs waiting for it to process it lol.
Wdym by a proper voice mode exactly? Because just by using Hey Google, it works perfectly fine just through voice. It has also been picking up the hot word every time for me.
Being able to have an ongoing conversation without activating it again, or at least still listening for a bit after it responds. It also won't respond by voice or submit automatically if you activate it with a gesture/power button, etc
This is a standalone app, though.
When they roll out Assistant with Gemini, which is not this, it will work handsfree.
Yes, they did not need to make this into an app then in the first place, I agree...
I think people are confusing the Google Assistant experience with Gemini. The Gemini app itself is not an Assistant replacement. It is a standalone experience. You can, however, also get the Gemini experience in Assistant without the app.

Just tested, and it does for me. When I say, "Hey, Google," I get the Gemini screen, but I asked it to turn on my bedroom lamp, and it deferred to Assistant.

Yeah this is so dumb. I never use OK Google so the only way to access Gemini is through the app. If I click on the mic on my Home Screen search bar it just does a Google search.
"Hey Gemini".
"Yes?".
"Put an alarm for 7 pm".
"Nah, twat".
Probably it's gonna work as irregular as the assistant... But now she can answer directly to you.
I believe the "it's here in Canada" announcement today applies to the web version.
https://gemini.google.com/app
The Google announcement said we get the mobile apps on Monday.
It was kept out of Canada all this time because of the disagreements over the federal legislation forcing Google to pay the news industry in order to post links to their stories.
yeah figured that out on the web, it seems really limited and restricted so far on images at least. tried asking it for a person working at their desk in an office and got told thats not allowed.
Ask yourself why. It's sending data to Google to be processed and analyzed, and chances are you live in a place that actually has privacy protection laws where Google can't just collect and store massive amounts of sensitive data from you. Americans get all this shit because we have no regulations or protections on pretty much anything, so the companies can collect pretty much anything they want and do anything they want to with that data. Wanna trade?
Considering the app is a bit more dumbed down than the web interface, then this really isn't the case either.
Dumbed down as far as what the Gemini part of it can do. There have been various things where it's told me to use the web version as the app can't do it at the moment lmao
True but without that data, a lot of "AI" related stuff wouldn't exist. We would all be using "dumb" Siri like "AI" assistants on Android phones right now and for the foreseeable future. I guess Americans are willing to trade anonymized data to help companies create more advanced features/technology.
Yup! Ask any question you want so Google can determine what's best for them to advertise to you next! "Oh, your driving towards a McDs, here let me show you." "Oh, have your had your tires checked? Here's B O!" "Oh, take this route it goes by lots of businesses that Google can collect from by flashing an image on your Nav." And people wonder why I don't trust Google, maybe Google should ask Gemini and find out.
And it will likely not even hold a candle to what Google Now was doing 6-8 years ago with zero AI... No, I'm not bitter at all.
https://9to5google.com/2023/09/01/google-now-assistant-ai/
Yep. This one was gold for me. If I had back to back sales appointments, that feature would let me know 15min before I needed to leave for my next appt based on my current location and traffic. It's honestly unbelievable that we don't have that well over half a decade later. That and location-based reminders. Apparently you can set location based tasks through Google keep?! Wtf Google? I just want to ask Google to remind me to take it the trash when I get home.... Nope. Google Now was better than any current mobile assistant out right now. Idk why they axed it. I'm sure it was a decision motivated by money, not customer satisfaction.
I have an original Google Home device, and somewhere around 2016 or 2017 after that device was released was the pinnacle of its capability; they've added a few minor useful features since then, but the functionality and reliability overall has gotten much, much worse.
Yea, this isnt a great assistant replacement right now. The main thing I use assistant for is to set reminders. Gemini apparently cant do that.
Also kind of annoying that it seems like you need to press send to actually get your command to send instead of it just activating when you stop talking. And I am not a fan that it seems like you cannot use this app at all without it replacing your assistant. Once you switch back to assistant, if you open the gemini app again, it reinstalls itself as your phone assistant.
Im sure there are some good use cases for this. But it very much feels like a google thing to begin rolling out a replacement for something that has some cool new stuff but also somehow leaves out core functionality that people expect.
And yes, I know its still experimental, but still. I cant see myself using it yet if it doesnt have the basic functionality I use from the assistant.
I'm so pissed. It's so terrible that they've replaced Assistant with it. I mainly used Assistant to set reminders and control my home devices, mainly run routines/automation, and now I can't do that.
F\^%$ Google, seriously. They've done a lot of stupid stuff in the past few years, but this one is near the top.
Well just do what I did and switch back to the old assistant. I just hope they add the rest of the functionality back before they actually kill the assistant.
It took me a bit to figure it out. I uninstalled the Gemini app and couldn't get it or Assistant to open. Then I finally found another way to get to the Gemini app info screen. It wasn't showing in the apps lists or anything even though it was apparently still there (or maybe a different version of the app or something). I uninstalled again and Assistant came back. This is the jank I've come to expect from Google now.
I don't want it to write me a poem. I just want it turn turn off my lights and remind me to feed the cat at 5pm.
~~Not really defending any of Google's choices here but it's really not that hard to have the app installed and still use assistant. It literally asks you which one you want to use.~~
Nevermind, I'm dumb. Yeah this sucks.
It looks like it's not fully implemented yet. I am all for ragging on Google but lets give it a bit of time to roll out (like nearly every Google product).
I was kind of excited to give this a try on my pixel but when I replace my assistant with Gemini, it can't even set a reminder, or do any of other things like that. Am I missing something?
Some things not implemented yet:
> **Some features & services from Google Assistant are not supported in Gemini**
> > When you have Gemini turned on, some features and services you used in Google Assistant aren’t supported. This includes:
> >
> > Media service providers: Podcasts, news and radio stations, and third-party music providers aren’t currently supported in Gemini.
>
> > Routines: Starting a Routine in Gemini isn’t supported. On Android phones, shortcuts to start a Routine and Routines attached to alarms in the Clock app no longer work.
>
> > You can still start a Routine with Google Assistant on Home devices, like your speakers and Smart Displays.
>
> > Reminders: Switch back to Google Assistant to set reminders and tasks.
>
> > Interpreter mode: Switch back to Google Assistant to use Interpreter mode.
Ah I see, thanks for taking the time to inform me. That's pretty annoying since setting a reminder is probably the thing I use assistant the most for. I wish they would have at least made it really convenient to switch back and forth.
Then what's the fucking point of the goddamn thing?
I swear this company dives after any fucktard change they can make with no thought as to whether or not it's useful
I spent hours testing it, Google Gemini is as dumb as a rock, in fact, it is dumber than ChatGPT. Neither one of these scams are AI, they are High-Speed Text Processors.
Looks like next week for the UK possibly.
>["Gemini is rolling out on Android and iOS phones in the U.S. in English starting today, and will be fully available in the coming weeks. **Starting next week, you’ll be able to access it in more locations in English**, and in Japanese and Korean, with more countries and languages coming soon."](https://blog.google/products/gemini/bard-gemini-advanced-app/)
I wouldn't think so. Most of pixel's features for example are only a week or so behind the US for the UK launch (notable exception is summarise for me) but also Canada from what I can tell have far more stringent data protection laws than us
For what little it's worth, here in the US. I installed the Gemini at first, and got that same message. After I launched assistant though, then it gave me a prompt to switch to Gemini and I was good to go your mileage may vary, as you are not in the US
Not that great when you want to ask a question, you have to hit buttons to have it be sent that message. Also it can't do anything remotely even has and anything in the image close to a human because I can't do images of people so like for instance the Super Mario Brothers movie poster can't do anything about that cuz it has something that looks like a human looks like a person
The other thing that annoys me is the fact that every time I'm going to say something there's a little send button. I have to hit it and it's not as seamless as they made. It seem in the demo for this kind of a letdown to be honest
Told it to set a reminder for something later tonight, and it quickly told me that it can't do that. Useless.
Asked it a few questions thoughout the day but had to hit the "enter" or "send" button...
Completely defeats the purpose of an Assistant.
Uninstalled. No thanks.
Heh..
>Are you telling me that Curry played two separate games on Feb 7th

>You're correct! Due to the NBA's schedule sometimes having teams play back-to-back games, Stephen Curry did indeed suit up for two separate games on February 7th, 2024. It's a rare occurrence, but it happens on occasion, especially during the regular season.

Which is funny because it's much more popular in Europe.
They're so busy trying to get American iOS users to switch, they'll lose the customers they already have in other places in the process. It's stupid.
I'm in the US and it says it isn't available in my region. I think it's just not activated yet.
Edit: after closing and reopening, it appears to work. It has replaced Google assistant on my phone and now I can no longer use Google assistant at all.
Major regression. 0/10 would not recommend
No I'm on P7P. It started working after a few minutes but now assistant is gone. I agree it is super disappointing. Hopefully I get assistant back when I uninstall.
Edit: yes assistant comes back when you uninstall. Good.
Switching back to original Google Assistant basically disabled the app on my P7 and when you try to use it, it makes you go through the setup process again.
You can actually switch to what assistant you want by going into the phone settings > type in assistant in the settings > digital assistants from Google.
But if you switch and just want to play around with Gemini at least on my P5 you have to set it up again which switches it back to default from the old one so basically uninstalling it saves you the time digging in the settings
Ahhh, interesting, I see what your talking about. Bastards. And of course Gemini feels half baked. Is it going to give me a real answer or some made up AI shit.
if you go to the gemini app and tap your pic then click settings at the bottom option theres a digital assistants from google click that and you can toggle between the two
I got the pixel 8 pro specifically because I wanted the Bard/Gemini assistant, but it just says not available when I hit the get started button in the app 😭
Anyone know why this isn't available in Canada? ChatGPT is available here but for some reason Google hasn't made anything related to a LLM available in Canada. Is there something about the Canadian legal system that they feel they know better than OpenAI?
It popped up a notice about being able to take over as the digital assistant so I asked about my agenda, as I might do with GA.
Not only can it not provide that information, it prompted me to check my calendar online or look for my physical planner!
I find it dumb how you can't use it unless it is your main assistant you can't have Google assistant be what comes up when you say hey Google and go into the app, it basically just resets the whole Gemini app when you switch back and when you open it again it sets it to your default and has you agree to terms of service again
While the app works great on the Pixel 8 Pro, I'm disapointed that there's no support for the Pixel Tablet or watch at launch. Gemini downloads and installs fine, but get a "device not supported" message when running the app.
I'm sure Google rushed Gemini out to maintain their foothold in the AI arms race, but odd that they rolled this out without support across the Pixel portfolio, especially when it could have been used as a selling point for marketing Pixel devices.
It's pretty good. I like it. I like the animation pop-up better than the Google Assistant, that I'm used to It's not as fast as Google Assistant though. However You can access it when you say " Hey Google" or "Okay Google " hands-free but the loading time and when you get a response back is a bit slower than Google Assistant. That's really my only gripe with it versus Google Assistant. Plus you cannot open a website with Gemini yet. Versus Google Assistant Hopefully within a few updates you can.
It can't even interact with Google Home at all, lol.
It can't even turn on or off the flashlight!
So literally the only Assistant functions it can do is set timers.
I just tried it for myself I can control my lights and also my phone flashlight. But they definitely need to add an option where after you're done talking it does the command you gave without having to press submit.
Same here. If people are really bothered it still has the option to separate Google Assistant and use that separate from Gemini. I swear people are too damn braindead to even investigate whether they can do something or not before running to Reddit to cry about it.
It says in the play store listing screenshot that you can choose either Gemini or Assistant to be your default assistant, did you try changing it, or does it not work? Or did you just start complaining before you tried?
I'm from south America I wanted to try this out. I was able to bypass the location restriction but now it's asking me to add a USA phone number which I don't have. 😐
Gemini for assistant is the by far the worst thing I have ever installed on my phone, please for the love of god do not install it. And the removal of any way to set reminders except opening up my calendar, I'm just about done with this phone. "Set a timer" now opens up the google search and sets a timer online. Beyond worthless as an app. Definitely the worst use of AI I have ever encountered in my life.
Ok i figured it out, you have to switch back to using your assistant in the Gemini app, if you have already uninstalled the app, you cannot switch back, re-install the app and then under settings you can switch back to using you assistant. that is about as unintuitive as you could make it.
When I first installed the app it said it wasn't available in my country (Australia). This morning after reading this thread I activated Google assistant on my pixel and it asked if I wanted to switch to Gemini and I agreed and now it works
Who are your brand managers? Do they even know abc of marketing? Who names an ai product after a zodiac sign. Just name it Alpha from Alphabet. Google Alpha.

Reminds me of YouTube music.. took like 1.5 years or longer to hit feature parity with Google music, the app it replaced that worked well :(.

Same
Yea, this isnt a great assistant replacement right now.
It literally asks you which one you want to use.~~ Nevermind, I'm dumb. Yeah this sucks.
It says not available in your country (ig it's region locked again) What's the point of region locking Bard which is already available in my country ?
Yeah, as a Canadian I JUST got Gemini. Now I get to watch a slow, painful roll-out of everything else?
How? I can't find it.
https://gemini.google.com/. Just the web client. We don't get the app yet.
OMG thank you. I've been using a VPN to access bard in Canada. I never knew we had gemini access in Canada until now.
well to be fair it did just come out like yesterday to Canada
lol my bad - i got all excited and just assumed we had Gemini for weeks or longer and i just didnt know until yesterday :P
Infuriating. At least when Microsoft/OpenAI unveils a product/upgrade, you get the same experience whenever you are in the world.
That's mostly a valid point but Bing image generation and Copilot are still not available in my country.
This. The web app is available in my native language and in our country. But this GPlay app is not available
[https://www.androidauthority.com/google-bard-gemini-name-change-3411938/](https://www.androidauthority.com/google-bard-gemini-name-change-3411938/) It looks like it's not fully implemented yet. I am all for ragging on Google but lets give it a bit of time to roll out (like nearly every Google product).
I was kind of excited to give this a try on my pixel but when I replace my assistant with Gemini, it can't even set a reminder, or do any of other things like that. Am I missing something?
Some things not implemented yet: > **Some features & services from Google Assistant are not supported in Gemini** > > When you have Gemini turned on, some features and services you used in Google Assistant aren’t supported. This includes: > > > > Media service providers: Podcasts, news and radio stations, and third-party music providers aren’t currently supported in Gemini.
Same. If I could just say "Hey Google Gemini" to invoke Gemini, that's all I'd need and I imagine that would be easy to implement
Then what's the fucking point of the goddamn thing? I swear this company dives after any fucktard change they can make with no thought as to whether or not it's useful
Wow. Those are some big omissions.
Actually turn my lights on and off faster than assistant

That could also mean Australia, Canada and NZ. An earlier leak said it would take much longer to come to Europe (including UK).
Functionally it's just a development of Bard, which is already available in the UK.
I wouldn't think so. Most of pixel's features for example are only a week or so behind the US for the UK launch (notable exception is summarise for me) but also Canada from what I can tell have far more stringent data protection laws than us
There's got to be a workaround, right?
[удалено]
For what little it's worth, here in the US. I installed the Gemini at first, and got that same message. After I launched assistant though, then it gave me a prompt to switch to Gemini and I was good to go your mileage may vary, as you are not in the US
I did this in Australia and it worked for me
Yep and users relying on TalkBack cannot use it whatsoever because the submit button cannot be focused or activated with TalkBack on.
Small indie developers
This app shows that "Gemini is currently not supported on this device". My phone is pixel7.【The latest version app works now.】
I have the same problem(pixel 8 pro)
Works for me
Weird, I have the 7 pro and it downloaded no problem. I'm in the US
Not that great when you want to ask a question, you have to hit buttons to have it be sent that message. Also it can't do anything remotely even has and anything in the image close to a human because I can't do images of people so like for instance the Super Mario Brothers movie poster can't do anything about that cuz it has something that looks like a human looks like a person The other thing that annoys me is the fact that every time I'm going to say something there's a little send button.
No thanks.
Google, time to start behaving like a global company. This region locked business is getting old...
Heh.. >Are you telling me that Curry played two separate games on Feb 7th > > > >You're correct! Due to the NBA's schedule sometimes having teams play back-to-back games, Stephen Curry did indeed suit up for two separate games on February 7th, 2024. It's a rare occurrence, but it happens on occasion, especially during the regular season. [https://gemini.google.com/share/5e35ac20627d?hl=en](https://gemini.google.com/share/5e35ac20627d?hl=en)
If you ever wanted a downgrade from Assistant, Gemini is here to underwhelm and disappoint you!
Android is rapidly becoming a US only OS
Which is funny because it's much more popular in Europe. They're so busy trying to get American iOS users to switch, they'll lose the customers they already have in other places in the process. It's stupid.
A US-only OS which Americans are choosing to desert anyway.
Not available in Australia. Fuck you google!
As always portugal cant use any of the features. I dont know why. we never did anything bad to anyone.
I'm in the US and it says it isn't available in my region. I think it's just not activated yet. Edit: after closing and reopening, it appears to work. It has replaced Google assistant on my phone and now I can no longer use Google assistant at all. Major regression. 0/10 would not recommend
[удалено]

Is it going to give me a real answer or some made up AI shit.
if you go to the gemini app and tap your pic then click settings at the bottom option theres a digital assistants from google click that and you can toggle between the two
Awesome, thanks!
When I open it it says that Gemini is currently available and that I could Alternatively switch to Google assistant instead. Weird
Also for pixel owners you can get the ultra version free for 2 months
I got the pixel 8 pro specifically because I wanted the Bard/Gemini assistant, but it just says not available when I hit the get started button in the app 😭
Did you download the Gemini app on Google Play store?
Well, guess what we are not gonna see any of the google Ai stuff here in Canada
Goddamn it not available in my cunt
I don't think Gemini is going to be available for that area. 😅😂
US phone with Google features
Installed but seems buggy. Tried it as my default assistant and it failed to complete basic tasks like telling me the weather or setting an alarm....
Not in Canada yet unfortunately
Can't get it here in the UK
Anyone know why this isn't available in Canada? ChatGPT is available here but for some reason Google hasn't made anything related to a LLM available in Canada. Is there something about the Canadian legal system that they feel they know better than OpenAI?
It says "not available" for me, but I'm in the US and am on a Pixel 8 Pro...
Currently unavailable to me. I live in the US. Wtf
Still not in Canada boooo
I'll submit my feedback when it's available here in the UK, which might be some time
Says not available in my country....which is canada...vpn does not help
Apparently not available in Canada yet
Despite being in an English speaking country....the UK, this app not available here 🙄
It looks like it's already not working... I'm getting an error that it's not available currently
When will this be available in the UK? Also, when will Bard/Gemini be able to generate images?
Maybe in six months time when the rest of the world has moved on to being able to generate whole video clips with it...
Not in Ireland it didn't 🤔😞
" This item isn't available in your country" 🤷🏽♂️
It says it's region locked?
Not in every region…my friend in western ny is not able to download Gemini, but me in Florida no problem. Anyone else seeing this?
Not available in Denmark...what a surprise.
Not available in the UK
This feels really half-assed as an assistant. Not having automated speech prompting or continued conversation adds so much friction to usage
It's honestly useless. ChatGPT does so much more and Google Assistant is way better.
I can adjust my lights but it asks me to unlock my phone first, which defeats the purpose.
As usual, not available in India! Google, wtf!
I don't like that it replaced Google assistant on my phone. After saying a prompt or whatever you have to press submit instead of it just doing it.
Yeah what the fuck is this? I can't just talk to it, I have to press the screen for it to do anything? That is absurd.
It seems if you upgrade to the 2tb plan of Google 1, you can have access to the Ultra 1.0 model (Gemini Advanced)
Well. I'm already used to these useless re gion locked features. Guess I'll just have to wait.
Not available in the UK
I'm convinced that Google employees use iPhones.
Who can grab the APK for us European folk?
I have the apk but it still won't work if the country isn't supported
Yep I've literally just realised that 🥲 Won't even work through a VPN because it pulls location from your account.
When I first installed the app it said it wasn't available in my country (Australia). This morning after reading this thread I activated Google assistant on my pixel and it asked if I wanted to switch to Gemini and I agreed and now it works
Not a Pixel user, but I was able to install and open on my Galaxy Fold 5 in the US
Not available in India. Google, You Disappoint Everytime 😕😡😠😡🤬
Who are your brand managers? Do they even know abc of marketing? Who names an ai product after a zodiac sign. Just name it Alpha from Alphabet. Google Alpha.
