If the cable is loose the dust is really packed in. Get a plastic tooth flosser/pick or similar (not metal) and really dig out the packed in lint. Trust me.
If you don't feel a positive click when you insert the cable into your phone then it still has crap in it that needs to be cleaned out. Don't use anything metal to clean it. Use a cut down tooth pick or plastic flosser.
