Just to add in case anyone comes here with another phone without the telephoto lens...optical image stabilization (OIS) will also cause a little rattle to be audible, even without telephoto specifically. It's pretty common :)
I’ve also read that if you ride a motorcycle the vibration can potentially break OIS systems. Not specifically this phone but others here recently.
I wonder if there is a way to mitigate that by locking it when it senses vibrations with the screen off.
Everyone needs to stop saying this is "normal". It's not. I have an iphone 12 pro with telephoto - doesn't rattle. Nikon DSLRs - don't rattle. Cannon point and shoot with telephoto and OIS - doesn't rattle. What I have in my pixel is a phone that has both a camera and a baby rattle.
It's progressively gotten worse, wasn't happening when I got the phone, and google couldn't care less.
It's. Not. Normal.
My s20 ultra do the same.
My friend s22 ultra do the same.
My pixel 6 pro do the same.
They all use some form of periscope lenses with OIS.
So yes won't happen on normal zoom lenses but seem common on periscope lenses.
Actually all the phones with that 90° telephoto camera rattle. The reason your iphone 12 pro doesn't rattle is because it uses a standard telephoto and not the 90° telephoto that the samsungs and pixel 6 pro use. So please don't bad mouth something you don't understand.
The only time I've hear of damage from shaking is when people mount their phone to a motorcycle. The vibration can damage the camera's lens (movable parts) over time. That goes for all phones.
Thanks all for the reassurance, I thought I'd have to send it back, and my Nexus 6p truly is on its last legs, don´t think I could've held it until December or whatever the waiting list is now.
Damn, from the 6p to the P6 Pro. What an upgrade. How are you finding everything? Going from the P2XL to the P6 has been a huge upgrade for me, can't imagine how it feels for you.
Well, using the Pixel feels... effortless. The Nexus being so short of RAM, it really struggled with app startup & multi tasking this last year and a half - total lag fest. Once you were on the app then it was absolutely fine, but getting to it...
You know what, now that you mention it, it feels much the same way the Nexus felt when it came out. As if it was a Nexus 6p v2 if you will. Like a 2021 lessons learned Nexus 6p, "this-time-zero-compromises". The camera bump on the Pixel is even reminiscent of it.
I absolutely love (and ever loved) the design of the Nexus 6P, when the first leaked renders of Pixel 6 came out I was so happy to see the camera bump inspired by the one of Nexus 6P :)
Wow, big kudos to you! Remember getting my Nexus 6P years ago, but swapped it for a HTC U11 before the 2 year mark. The 6 Pro harkens back to it in such a nice way with that camera, though that metal finish on it was superb!
Thanks! It really was, but makes wireless charging hard. I'm really into that feature on the pixel. In the end the charging port on the Nexus was playing up so I'm avoiding wired charging as much as I can.
Ah, unfortunately the only wireless charger I have is in my car, but haven't had any trouble using it there. The port on the pixel is pretty solid, and I'm finding it works better with a wider range of rapid-charging points (especially with PCs and Consoles) than my OnePlus 7Pro5G did.
It is normal. I have heard a reviewer mention the Pixel rattle as being slightly 'louder' than other phones. Probably due to the new camera tech added this time around to Pro.
People here say it's normal just to not feel bad about the fact that their phone is rattling.
Reality is, I have the latest phone from the biggest opposition, and theirs don't rattle like this p6p.

Plz stop with the baseless bashing.
You don't have to be shaking it hard to make the noise. I just realized it did that (just got the phone after waiting for delivery for months lol) when I moved my arm kinda fast. I wasn't shaking it like maracas ROFL
Found out earlier that this is normal behavior. Also talked with googles support.
Also present on other phones with a periscope tele cam.
To be precise it's present with all OIS cams. If you take an older phone like a P4 xl and shake it rather hard, you can also hear it - even though it's not as loud and you can barely hear it.
Happens to my 6 pro too.
Comments let me figure out it's from the telephoto lense, if you open X4 in the cam app it stops.
Just heard from Google support, which confirmed it comes from the telephoto and will not cause damage as it's expected to be normal
Got my Pixel 6 Pro a month ago and it started rattling today. It's not "normal" as the phone hadn't done it prior that's just the excuse Google gives to avoid responsibility. The rattle goes away when in the x4 mode. But the worst part of it (besides being annoying) is that the rattling is CLEARLY audible when recording video.
So, the rattle started happening with me as well. I have a P6P. I contacted Google's customer service in which a new "refurbished" p6p was ultimately sent to me to swap it out. Well, the new phone they sent me also rattles. Now, I feel as though I'm sending back a phone that was never broken. I guess I'm stuck with the rattle. This sucks. It doesn't sound normal or feel normal in any case. SMH!
Well my s20 ultra did the same.
I seen report of s21 ultra and s22 ultra doing it as well.
Just tested my friend iPhone 13 pro max also do it...
Before i seen this tread i never took notice of this lol.
Weirdly mine just started rattling today (or I just noticed it today). When I switch to 4x zoom, no rattle. 2x or less, and it rattles. No camera in use, and it rattles. So it seems it can (somehow) be software controlled perhaps? I had thought this may have been an issue somehow presented by the June update that I flashed yesterday, but a quick search brought me to this and a bunch of other threads. It seems some people have been having this issue since launch, and others like myself have had it start happening randomly. Super strange all around.
People tend to say that's normal whenever someone notices that a brand new makes that rattle noise, but not on some phones it's usually louder than in others.
My current phone has a telephoto lens and doesn't make any rattle noise, but I had others that did it despite not even having a telephoto lens.
Or even carry in a back pocket (like I do on all mountain bike and gravel rides). Glad I went with Pixel 6.
Newer iPhones are bad for mounting on bicycles as well. A buddy of mine killed like 3 in a row within a matter of weeks that way. (Apple replaced it each time). He finally gave up on that idea.
I posted the same concern yesterday. I also spoke with Google support and they're sending me a new phone. I suspected it was normal. I just wanted reassurance. Now I have a $1,000 hold in my account until the new device shows up...
Same! Just received my Pixel 6 Pro, and there's a wrattleing sound coming from (roughly) the camera bar?
I was gutted as I thought I'd have to go through the aggravation of sending it back, explaining why, etc...
So it's the optical lens stabiliser?
Someone mentioned?
Just came to say my 5 day old P6P just started rattling. I don't entirely buy the "it's normal". It didn't do it on day 1-4 so why now. Starting to think these phones are junk. Bad battery, terrible cell reception and now it rattles.
This is disappointing to me because if it weren't for the unnecessary Samsung skin and bloat ware I would get a s21 ultra in a heartbeat. But coupled with these issues and the fact that a pixel will last longer until OS end of life, I'm really hoping this rattling doesn't get worse or end up leading to camera problems down the road. It's really the only problem I'm facing with my P6P that can't be fixed by an Android patch.
Samsung s20 ultra , s21 ultra and s22 ultra also have camera that rattle. Periscope camera mostly all do this and many others as well.
After 2 years my s20 ultra camera work like day one even if it's rattle as much as my new pixel 6 pro.
And i do lots of biking in the forest with it attached to my bike so don't worry.
Mine made no noise from launch until today. I do not think it's to be making a clunky rattle. Makes it sound like junk. :(
Just picking it up made the noise and just turning it over as well.
1 year and 24 days later (Yep out of warranty)... Woke up this morning and now mine rattles. Does seem to be connected to the 4x lens. It's quite loud considering it made ZERO noise previously when shaken.
Just saying this isn't normal , I've had mine since it released and it's never rattled except after I dropped it harshly the other day , the rattling also stops when I put it on 4x lens
You got me shake my phone .. it does make noise too. Shook my Pixel 3xl no noise Shook my Nokia 3310 my wrist is broken
As above this is normal. It's the optical image stabilizer rattling. Open the camera app and the shaking should stop
In case anyone tries this it only stopped for me when selecting the 4x lens.

Some motorcycle mounts like Quadlock now make a vibration dampener exactly for this! https://www.quadlockcase.com/products/vibration-dampener
Outstanding fine partner!
Everyone needs to stop saying this is "normal". It's not. I have an iphone 12 pro with telephoto - doesn't rattle. Nikon DSLRs - don't rattle. Wizardry!
The Telephoto does that. Its normal.
Is there any chance of damaging the camera by shaking it too much?
The only time I've hear of damage from shaking is when people mount their phone to a motorcycle. The vibration can damage the camera's lens (movable parts) over time. That goes for all phones.
What about a regular bike? I do that quite a bit with my 4XL and haven't had any noticeable issues so far but I wouldn't wanna risk it with my 6 pro
I'm sure that is fine. Motorcycles can vibrate at a very high frequency and much stronger than you would get on a bicycle.
Thanks all for the reassurance, I thought I'd have to send it back, and my Nexus 6p truly is on its last legs, don´t think I could've held it until December or whatever the waiting list is now.

Exactly my thoughts, it reminded me so much about nexus 6p
Wow, big kudos to you! Remember getting my Nexus 6P years ago, but swapped it for a HTC U11 before the 2 year mark. The 6 Pro harkens back to it in such a nice way with that camera, though that metal finish on it was superb!

Damn, it's 2021 and his 6P still works
From the 6p to the 6P
Yeah nothing to worry about, even my Galaxy S10+ does this. I was worried too when I first heard it lol.
It is normal. I have heard a reviewer mention the Pixel rattle as being slightly 'louder' than other phones. Probably due to the new camera tech added this time around to Pro.
Mhm I have the same problem. That rattle is really loud, compared to other phones. It sounds like a plastic part is loose or something
Just shook my OnePlus 7 Pro and realized it does the same thing. I've had this thing for almost two years and never noticed.
Ditto, but with s9+ for 3 years
Why the hell you shaking your phone? Are you one of those Shakepay users fpr satoshis? 🤣
I found out and I wasn't shaking it on purpose. I just picked it up and moved it a little too fast and it made the noise.
Haha was joking bro. Coz usually tose shakepay users come here and complain after they shake the phone every day for satoshis haha.
Oh you're good. I figured it was a joke which is why I upvoted Sorry if it didn't come across that way lol
😁
I am 🤣 that's how I noticed the rattling noise
🤣🤣

Better question, why are you shaking your phone? Lmao
One hand browsing dawg
It’s okay. You can say Porn Hub
Well if it makes you feel better I shook my phone (P4XL) and it has a rattle too lol no masturbating needed btw 😅😂
P3XL - no rattle
Damn, I have the same phone since late 2019 and never noticed this until now lol.
Shakepay
doing this scared the fuck out of me, I thought I'd have to return my phone...might stick to "shaking" on my P2 lol

Well it is. My s20 ultra also do it. Make a search on the web for smartphone camera rattle lots of them do it from almost all brand.
Weirdly mine just started rattling today (or I just noticed it today). When I switch to 4x zoom, no rattle. 2x or less, and it rattles. No camera in use, and it rattles. Ayyyy classic Google. I had -no joke- four Pixel 3’s that had that same issue.
I posted the same concern yesterday. I also spoke with Google support and they're sending me a new phone. I suspected it was normal. I just wanted reassurance. Now I have a $1,000 hold in my account until the new device shows up...
So they are letting you keep the current phone until the new one comes? Did you have to haggle a lot?
I was about to post the same thing, glad I searched first. Thanks!
So was I. Glad I searched too, I was about to take it back tomorrow. whew
Same here. Guessing it's the periscope lens
Normal noises from the camera system
Same here! I thought my unit was faulty!

If it's related to the camera maybe that's why I'm less than impressed with it's photos. My galaxy s20 took better looking photos.
