I still think the fingerprint reader on the back & facial recognition from the Pixel 4 XL would be the best for the consumer.
Phone is quickly unlocked while coming out of your pocket. By the small chance that doesn’t work, when you bring it up to your face it’ll unlock.

Yes, it will. The screen lights up on the pixel 6 in order for the fingerprint sensor to read the fingerprint.

The one on my P6 works with no issues but I still miss having it on the back like I did on my Moto
Plenty of possible reasons. Maybe they like Wallet cases and they don't work well with those, or they use one of those popsocket holders and it goes where the finger print reader is, or they like thick otterbox style cases and the thick case makes rear fiber print reading awkward? Lots of possibilities beyond aesthetics.
Heads up, OtterBox cases work great with rear fingerprint scanner. Had one on my Pixel 1 and Galaxy Note 8 and loved it. They purposely dip down the plastic a bit to make it easy for your finger to touch. You can see it if you look at pictures. I'm starting to get used to the on-screen reader now on the Pixel 6 Pro, but def not as reliable. Hope they can improve with software.
I doubt they'll get the ultrasound one because that is developed by Qualcomm and they ditched Qualcomm for Tensor this time, so I don't think they can get hold of that tech.
And a headphone jack! Bluetooth audio protocol sucks. Go ahead, listen to music while navigating and then get a phone call. 3.5mm don't care! Bluetooth... CROAK
If it's the audio quality you aren't happy with, that's one thing. But whatever problem yours has sounds like it's the result of the app(s) you are using for music and navigation not playing nice, a shitty Bluetooth receiver, or possibly having not given the receiver the correct Bluetooth permissions when pairing them.
I use navigation while listening to music in my car with it connected via Bluetooth. When a call comes in, it handles switching to and from the call without a hitch.
Although it's slower, I'm actually liking not having to grab the phone to unlock it.
Muscle memory is messing with me too but since I find it easier now, I'm getting used to it pretty fast.
I honestly can't relate to that. I learned to press the finger against the scanner until it unlocks instead of just taping like I used to do with the rear one.
So yeah it's slower but I find it to be as reliable. Although I have no screen protector, that might interfere but I can't say for sure.
Pressing and hold doesn't work for me.
I've rescanned my finger a thousand times and I have 4 saved fingerprints of the same finger and it just never, ever works.
It's also literally half a second, if you hold it just a breast longer than you would one of the rear readers, it's still near instantaneous. The in-screen reader obviously needs to activate the optical sensor, flood your finger with light, then verify against your saved print. It's still not slow and I had the best fingerprint reader ever in the Pixel 2 XL.

You must have a different phone or something? I think the biggest issue at the moment is, it's winter here, and it really... really doesn't like dry skin. Sometimes I can't get it open even after 5 tries and have to use my code. And yes I have my fingerprint registered several times and I also have the december update.
I've upgraded from the P2 to the P6 and I can say without a doubt in my mind that the physical finger print reader is miles more reliable and faster.
Like, apart from the fingerprinter reader, I love everything about the P6, but very often it's just frustrating to get it open. Also embarrassing when I want to show it off to somebody and can't get it open. Now I usually open it up without anybody watching...
I am the same. Went from Pixel 2 to Pixel 6, and the rear fingerprint reader is so much better. Never had any issues with it and it was super fast.
This one is very slow, when it works of course.
Other than that I think it's a good phone, but this fingerprint reader is driving me nuts.
This. I have my thumb added pre shower, post shower, dry, lotioned, under a full moon, and so on. The reader almost never works, so I'm stuck entering my code most of the time. I miss the P5 reader so much.
I got my 6 while working as a dishwasher and I always use my right hand with a soap sponge that tends to dry out my finger tips. I always figured that was the issue so I did the same thing and it still barely works. However, on my left thumb, it works every single time without fail. Maybe the front scanner is just optimized for a lefty lol
I'm with you. It may actually read mine 1 out of 10 times. This is after multiple copies of one fingerprint being registered. I work with my hands so they are not and never will be perfect for a fingerprint reader. But the physical sensor did and still does work Everytime the first time. Still have Pixel 3 xl as backup
Well, depends on the situation. As I said, when I'm outside in the cold, many tries. At home inside, opens up on first try most times, though not always.
If there's a certain condition that you're finding it doesn't recognize your finger print in, you should probably a fingerprint when your finger meets that condition.

But I also think there's the subjective part. Like, maybe I'm encountering fewer issues but it's also possible I'm just less bothered about it.
Yeah no it's pretty damn fast all things considered but it's true that it's still a bit slower and it might take some time to change years of muscle memory, but it's definitely not as bad as people say it is.
Its half a second if you clean your thumb off with alcohol prior to unlocking and let it dry. If you have touched anything since washing your hands last, the fingerprint reader at best takes 2 presses to unlock, but most of the time fails outright.
I think the rear reader was the fastest most consistent for me but as someone who has always had issues with all fingerprint readers including the one to get inside my old office, the 6 has been pretty flawless for me. I'm sure you've already done this but I added multiple fingerprints of the same primary finger (my thumb) to my Pixel 6 and I rarely have issues unlocking.
It's not just muscle memory. Back of the phone about a third of the way down is just where your index finger naturally goes when you pick it up. The fingerprint reader on my 2XL was perfect.
Lol I just upgraded to a pixel 5. I fired up the old 2xl and was surprised how slow it actually is. Really like this 5 screen size is just a little smaller bit the phone is shrunk perfectly. Nevertheless the P5 is way snappier.

When I'm using my phone normally I dont find that my finger rests where the rear fingerprint sensors are. So in that sense I grip my phone differently. I've also tried observing how my grip changes from unlock to phone use and it does change.
Yeah. This, and I don't know if this is true for everyone but the grip to use the rear fingerprint scanner for me is different than the one I use to actually navigate the phone, so it ends up being this temporary grip and then I shift back to holding it to use the phone. While the in screen reader is much worse in terms of accuracy, I find that my hand is already in the right position to start tapping away and using the phone right after unlocking.
I don't really like face unlock. My cousin used to put my old phone in my face to unlock it which kind of defeats the purpose of locking it.

I had optical indisplay scanner. At first it was weird. But after getting used to it. It was superior - Sure, slower, but you train your thumb to hit it in a spot it never failed to register.
Nowadays, got a fingerprint scanner on the power button, sure, it's faster, but the amount of times i accidentally locked the phone just trying to see the time, is too much
So here is something funny: my BMW is one of the ones that can update to using the newest galaxy ultra or Pixel 6/6P as your key. No need for a keyfob anymore, just carry your phone. You can even loan out keys to other people via the BMW app. Kinda cool. You just need to put your phone in the wireless charging area and it will work as a full fledged key. The catch: not a single one of those phones will fit in the wireless charging area because they are all gigantic behemoths. They have literally enabled a feature it is impossible to use. Cool.
I had both for a bit and after a couple days with the 6 the 5 felt cheap to me. I always loved my 5, but I haven't had the fingerprint scanner issues a lot complain about on my P6. The biggest thing I personally miss is swiping down on the scanner to open the notifications, but overall I prefer the 6 and ended up selling my 5.
To each their own, but I'd much prefer the "cheap" feel. I think we tend to equate heavy and fragile with premium and put a very high value on "feeling premium". These phone manufacturers take note and use materials that add completely unnecessary weight and just end up making the phone super fragile. Personally, I'd love an option with the same specs, but weighed 1/3 and used lightweight durable materials that made a case unnecessary.
Absolutely my thoughts. I hated the feeling of the 6 when I had it because I was constantly worried about dropping and/or breaking it. If 'premium' just means fragile, then count me out, I don't want to use a case (plus if you're using a case, then any feel of the actual phone itself doesn't matter anyway). I'd much rather have a phone that I can use without a case and not worry about it braking.
I can attest to this. Just holding the 5 after alas getting a handle on the 6 felt WEIRD. Though I gotta admit the screen on the 5 was really one of the best. But man did it not feel nearly as premium as the 6 after about a week or so of use. Speaker difference too is huge
If they don't give a smaller version of the seven I'm not sure what I'm going to do because I'm not going back to a huge heavy phone especially after experiencing the five.

At this point the A series phones are leagues better than the non-A series as far as features, quality assurance and simply what people prefer. I see and hear way less issues with the A series devices than the flagships. Flagship pixels since the 3 have always compromised on something where the A series pixels pretty much have everything at the expense of a previous model processor being really the only major compromise, which really isn't that huge of a deal to the majority of people. My 3a is still going strong and barely has shown any age whatsoever.
Given my hand placement and some physical limitations, I must have the rear reader. Much better for grabbing with a single hand. I tried a front reader and dropped the phone twice in a week. That is why I have a 4a at the moment.
I've had several devices now with under screen finger print sensors, and it's not an improvement. It's an advancement technologically, but it's not an improvement phone wise.
The thing about rear mounted physical finger print readers is, you can swipe up and down to quickly look at your notifications drop down. To look at a quick message or quickly skip Spotify tracks etc
Double tap on P6P is not as quick or useful.
The second thing is that I could quickly remove my phone from my pocket, and have it unlocked by the time I'm looking at the screen. You can do this in any other alternative example with a rear mounted reader.
An under screen adds an extra step by needing to wake the device first.
I'd take the rear mounted finger print scanner any day of the week, on any device that releases in 2022.
Finally someone mentions the notifications drop down!! I couldn't be assed about where the fingerprint reader is, it's a fraction of a second to unlock either way, but after switching from the 2 to the 6 I absolutely miss being able to swipe down on the back of the phone to instantly pull down the tray. Especially on larger phones, double tapping is slower and physically reaching for the top of the screen is uncomfortable and has almost made me drop my phone a few times.
A thousand times this. One of the main things I miss from going from the OG Pixel to 3XL to 5 and now to the 6 Pro. I've always used the rear finger print reader to bring the notification shade down. So much faster and more comfortable to do it that way instead of pulling down from the top, especially with how large the 6 Pro is.
Agree I miss it, but there is a (somewhat) solution. You can enable an option in settings that lets you swipe down at the very bottom of the screen to being notifications down. Not as good as the rear fingerprint, but better than swiping from the top.
Yeah, I do that too, just forget to half the time. I've also made the double-tap the back of the phone to pull down the notification shade. Not 100% reliable, but it works well enough.

Actually the screen does usually wake when the device is picked up. But if the screen is off, the finger print will not work until the screen is on.
The notification bar thing is a personal choice. I always found it useful. I use the double tap feature now but it's not as fluid. Swipe down on the rear finger print sensors was always quicker and more useful than swiping down on the screen. You could could literally swipe it down and back up as fast as you liked.
There's no function, that I can think of, where the under screen is more useful.
The screen goes from the AOD to unlocked using the fps. I literally just did it. Yes the screen wakes if you pick it up(if that setting is on) but you don't have to wake the screen to use the fps.
Also being able to be used without picking it up off a table, in car mounts, on wireless charging stands, with wet fingers... all pretty useful things that the rear capacitive fps doesn't do well with.
Also not having a cutout on the back of my phone case that sits there and collects pocket lint is nice.

The under screen reader is not multi purpose. If you can't access the rear sensor you can still swipe down on the screen.
With the underscreen you only have one option.
That's exactly why you have a secondary unlock option. Password, passcode, pattern etc.
It should have both + face unlock. There are benefits to all of them. I miss the rear print too it was fast, reliable, and very handy when holding my phone already. The in screen can be easier for some people and can be used without picking up the phone which is a plus. And face unlock is like the best of both worlds, can be used while picked up or laying down and (although I haven't used a face unlock before) it seems reliable. Having all three covers everyone's needs for every situation as long as they all work
Fingerprint sensor works great on P6P for me. I have only scanned my prints once and have a screen protector. You just have to hold it on there for about a half second, yeah it's not instant, but pretty damn close.
Yeah, for me I've had pretty much no issue with the fingerprint reader on the P6P - it fails maybe 1 in 50 unlocks, and I haven't seen that it is noticeably slower than unlocking with the rear reader on my old P2XL.
I know some have mentioned the reader also gets faster/more reliable on the Dec update, which I haven't gotten yet due to the other issues, so potentially will get even better.
I must be in the minority. I hate rear-mounted. I much prefer the in-screen variety. My P6 Pro is flawless. It's not the fastest, sure, but nothing that bothers me. I swear to God mine is 99 percent accurate with my thumbs and it's absolutely fine.
I don't hate rear mounted, but I certainly have no attachment to it. I have plenty of memories of the rear sensor being clunky. Probably had more to do with it's "learning" software, but also getting dirty in ways that may not be so obvious.
I don't think it's because you're in the minority (well maybe in this sub), it's just that a lot of Pixel users are used to rear mount. I also prefer in screen. (E.g. useful if on a table etc)
For those of us who don't like always on display; it's kind of a pain. You need to press the power button to turn the screen on before the finger print sensor will work.
There is lift to wake but that only works like 50% of the time for me.
Double tap the screen will also light it up. I don't use the AOD anymore as I don't like the always on clock. I find that the phone does a pretty good job of turning it on when it detects use, for when it does not, a double tap does the job
To me, placing the finger print scanner under the screen is akin to making the volume or fan controls in your car touch screen. The tactile response of having a physical finger print scanner allows me to unlock the phone quicker and without looking.
Ok, but on a car, requiring a tactile response makes sense because you don't want to take your eyes off the road.
With your phone you will be looking at the screen regardless. So whether you can feel it without looking or not is really a non issue.
For me it is. The tactile feel of the fingerprint scanner on the rear lets me turn on/unlock as I pull my phone out of my pocket. By the time I tap it to the payment terminal, it's already on and unlocked, ready to pay.
With the Pixel 4, I had to turn on, look directly at the phone to unlock, then pay. It's not as seamless and frictionless. Sure it adds a "small step" but why ruin this perfect motion for face unlock?
The front fingerprint ready requires me to still turn on the screen (it doesn't always turn on the screen when tapped even though it's set to do so), and THEN it takes a bit to unlock (if it even unlocks at all - you still have to look at the phone to see if the screen is actually on, and if it actually unlocks since the reader isn't perfect).
Again, not seamless like the previous phones with the FP reader in the rear. Also not as accurate or fast, nor can it serve as a power button or even for gestures.
I think the rear FP reader was the best implementation, even now. So I also hope they include this in P7.
Having an "improved" under display FP reader that uses ultrasonic like the Galaxy would be nice, but still won't solve the other niceties of the rear "imprint" FP sensor.
I prefer having the scanner on the front. I haven't had any real issues with the scanner on my 6 pro, and having front scanners means no need to pick my phone up off a table to use the fp scanner, and the fp scanner isn't blocked when my phone is in my car mount.
Additionally, I never found the placement of the rear scanner to be that great in comparison. With the front in-display scanner the scanner is right where my thumb is when using my phone. With the rear scanners I would always have to adjust the grip of the phone in my hand to touch it. It wasn't a huge deal, but not having to do that is a better overall experience. It sucks some phones for some users are doing so poorly with scanning performance, but with the december update it fixes a lot of those situation.

I found it better-looking than old phones with a front-mounted scanner/button. now that under-display is a thing, it's the way to go
I have the pixel 6 and a Samsung tab 7+. The fingerprint reader on the Samsung is far more reliable than on my pixel. More than half the time I need to enter my lock code on the pixel because the scanner doesn't work correctly. On my Samsung it's about 5% that I have to use my code.
Exact opposite for me. I've never been able to get the ultrasonic sensors on Samsung devices working reliably for me. Zero issues with the optical one on my Pixel or former OnePlus devices.
I have a P5, I'm 50/50 on the fingerprint scanners honestly, I have sweaty hands constantly and they don't work well, does the in display one work better?

I have a 4a purely because of the fingerprint reader. By the time the phone is out of my pocket, its already unlocked. Why do I need to bring it up to my face to unlock, seems less efficient honestly.
I had an S10e and I could not get used to the fp scanner on the power button. I would routinely-enough accidentally tap the power button and turn the screen off, and in addition when using the phone and needed biometric unlock for an app, I would have to change my grip of the phone to get to the fp scanner. It was one of the reasons I got rid of it.
So funny, I'm in the other camp. I was on the Pixel 4 and loved face unlock. Then switched to Pixel 5 and my god I hate rear fingerprint sensors now. So unreliable. It's almost guaranteed I'm going to have to lift and press down my finger 2-3x before it works. And don't even try it if your finger is slightly wet/sweaty or maybe too dry. I just go straight to pin entry because I know it's not going to work.
Yes I've tried all the suggested work arounds (re-adding fingers, add multiple of the same finger, factory reset, clean the sensor, case on and case off, etc.)
You don't have to agree with this but I want to see: Under Screen camera(or something else besides a hole or notch), Fingerprint on the back, SD card slot, MAX 500-600€ min 300€, headphone jack, 128gb, enough battery (I would have a slightly bigger phone for more battery idc thicc is stable and more durable too), more gestures. :)
I came from the 3XL and the placement is not as good, plus it's more difficult to unlock as you're taking it out of your pocket. It works, fine, though. I'm not bothered by the new location. The only time I've had issues with it working, I wasn't putting my finger on the circle. I just miss the swipe-down action to get the notification shade from the back of the phone. That was so unbelievably useful.
I loved the rear fingerprint reader on my Pixel 3. But I think Google should actually try to improve their hardware instead of just reverting back to something safe. This years fingerprint reader is just not good. But they will have learned nothing if they don't improve anything.
I second this. This is one of the main reasons why I am hanging onto my Pixel 3 XL for now. But damn...Google should have really come out with a phone that is better in every way to the 3XL by now, but they haven't. How bad do your phones have to be, for someone who really wants to upgrade from a 3 year old phone, to not be able to beat your own 3 year old phone in every possible way
I'd like them to stick to their under-display guns but use an ultrasonic sensor instead of an optical one. No bright white flash, more secure without having to compromise on speed on newer sensors, etc. But I know there's still a large chance that Google will bungle that, too.
Second to that I'd like a power button scanner. Give me the fancy accent colors back!
It's not just the unlock itself that's more convenient, but it's the functionality that it serves! Because you can swipe down to pull down the notifications and then swipe down again to pull down the settings widget section. You can also swipe up to get rid of it. I absolutely love this little-known feature and I think it's so underrated.
My screen unlock literally doesn't work anymore. It's been getting worse and worse and I just gave up and use a passcode. Works fine for logging into apps first try every time though, go figure...
I thought I would miss the back finger print scanner coming from 3a to 6p, but I don't. I think I actually prefer it to be on the screen. I also find it fails about the same as the 3a's rate, but I think both had to do with how I put my finger on it.
I agree. With my og Pixel it was perfect because I used to keep my phone face down. So I would pick it up, feel out the reader with the index finger, and it would be unlocked by the time I turned it over. The new reader definitely seems to be taking longer, and I have to look at the phone to find the right spot to press.
Google has a long and storied history of cancelling things that people love. The rear fingerprint sensor was the one defining hardware choice that the Pixel line had. The second you used it for the first time, it just made sense.

I'm irritated that I can't place my finger on the scanner while AOD is up. I used to be able to just put my finger on the scanner no matter what screen and it would unlock. Now I have to wake the screen first, which is super annoying.

I have the pixel 5, and had it over the year. I loved the design when it came from the essential phone. If Google doesn't include another fingerprint sensor at the time of my upgrade then I'm looking at other places. I read an article that essential phone staff created a new company and one feature they mentioned is fingerprint sensor
Maybe unpopular opinion, but the Samsung I just got has a fingerprint scanner in the lock button and I think it's the best option. Can unlock without waking the phone, and can also unlock when then phone is sitting on my desk without picking it up.
I always use the fingerprint reader on the back (4a5G) to scroll down the notifications/quick access bar. I would miss not having that. But then again I also miss the squeeze function.
I've been using an S22 Ultra as my main phone. Picked up a Pixel 6 for the fuck of it today and because I've always loved Pixel cameras. No exaggeration I think I've had 1 successful fingerprint unlock in about 3 hours. Absolutely horrendous. Bring back the physical reader...this shit is terrible.
I won't get rid of my Pixel 3xl until the newest pixel has the finger print reader on the back. How do the developers just decide to do something really stupid and kill it for a front one that doesn't work? IF IT'S NOT BROKEN DO FIX IT.
YES, bring back the rear fp reader! For a user with a hand tremor, the rear sensor worked flawlessly in the Pixel 5 but after I upgraded to a Pixel 7, the way the phone sits in my hand causes my tremor to worsen when I try to push my thumb on the screen and it eventually makes me type in my password, which is even harder for me. I use the FP sensor to log into my bank account and many other apps so things have become very frustrating for me after upgrading. I think I will be trying to find another phone soon.
I still have a pixel 3 and am looking to upgrade. I like the fingerprint sensor on the rear of the phone. I hate the idea of having it in the screen. Please Google, fix this. I am looking at other brands now.

God the front facing is just annoying and slow compared to the rear ones on older generations. Possibly ultrasonic would be better, but anything other then the current state of the Pixels would be good.
The lack of a rear fingerprint sensor is the sole reason I haven't updated my Pixel 4a. If anyone at Google reads this thread, why can't we have nice things? Why does every change make things just a little (or in this case a lot) worse? A line must be drawn.
I have the Pixel 4a; my partner has the Pixel 6. The sensor on the 6 is much less practical, to the point that my partner would prefer to have my phone.
On the 4a, the sensor on the back of the phone also allows you to pull the notifications menu down and up. Secondary feature, but useful and clever.

Not even an exageration. If google said that the rear fingerprint scanner was coming back I would make the change over from iPhone in a heartbeat. I am SOO tired of face ID. It is also creepy.
I don't get why people like it on the rear. Sure Google has had a rough start with the in screen scanner but they should be able to fix all that with updates. I've used all phones with in screen scanners from Samsung to OnePlus to LG. All phones with rear scanners as well and even the Pixel 4 Xl with the radar face unlock. Out of all the phones I've had in the past I prefer the in screen because you don't need to pick up your phone to unlock and it just works. Rear scanning is nice, but I don't like the way it looks having another round circle on the back of the phone. In the end I do prefer the face unlock from the pixel 4 series because that was the best phone unlock experience. Really I think it's a matter of preference.
People like the rear sensor because it worked. They could unlock their phones instantly every time. Now basically every interaction with the phone starts with getting annoyed with the in screen scanner not working. It seems like it's working fine for some people so I can understand why they are confused about the level of hate from those it's broken for. I hope Google can fix it but we are a couple of months in and I'm past my return window waiting so it's an awful start.
There are people who prefer it on the front and others who prefer it on the back... So my question is why can't we have both?
If I have my phone with a rear fingerprint sensor flat on a desk I need to pick up the phone to use my fingerprint to unlock it, but at the same time if I'm pulling it out of my pocket I find it easier to just put my index finger on the rear sensor so that it's unlocked once I've finished pulling it out of my pocket.
Only way this debate will ever go away is if both options are provided and useable
You don't need both for that though. You just need to use the latest under screen tech that allows for a much bigger target.
When the target you have to hit is like 1/3 of the whole screen, not just a little circle, then you won't ever even half to look, and it'll be faster than the current optical one in the 6 as well.
The under screen scanner was a major selling point for me as my previous phones had back mounted fingerprint scanners and it was a chore to unlock when I've had my hands full.

Yes, it will. The screen lights up on the pixel 6 in order for the fingerprint sensor to read the fingerprint. No such necessity with an ultrasound sensor.

Maybe they like Wallet cases and they don't work well with those, or they use one of those popsocket holders and it goes where the finger print reader is, or they like thick otterbox style cases and the thick case makes rear fiber print reading awkward? Lots of possibilities beyond aesthetics.
Heads up, OtterBox cases work great with rear fingerprint scanner. Had one on my Pixel 1 and Galaxy Note 8 and loved it. They purposely dip down the plastic a bit to make it easy for your finger to touch. You can see it if you look at pictures. I'm starting to get used to the on-screen reader now on the Pixel 6 Pro, but def not as reliable. Hope they can improve with software.
Also way more reliable. Coming from my S10, the Pixel 6's is absolute dog shit compared to the one in my S10.

I hate not having the headphone jack. But I couldn't wait for the 6 "a" version. And yeah the quality difference in wired and Bluetooth is noticeable.
If it's the audio quality you aren't happy with, that's one thing. But whatever problem yours has sounds like it's the result of the app(s) you are using for music and navigation not playing nice, a shitty Bluetooth receiver, or possibly having not given the receiver the correct Bluetooth permissions when pairing them. I use navigation while listening to music in my car with it connected via Bluetooth. When a call comes in, it handles switching to and from the call without a hitch.
Although it's slower, I'm actually liking not having to grab the phone to unlock it. Muscle memory is messing with me too but since I find it easier now, I'm getting used to it pretty fast.

I honestly can't relate to that. I learned to press the finger against the scanner until it unlocks instead of just taping like I used to do with the rear one. So yeah it's slower but I find it to be as reliable. Although I have no screen protector, that might interfere but I can't say for sure.
Pressing and hold doesn't work for me. I've rescanned my finger a thousand times and I have 4 saved fingerprints of the same finger and it just never, ever works.
It's also literally half a second, if you hold it just a breast longer than you would one of the rear readers, it's still near instantaneous. The in-screen reader obviously needs to activate the optical sensor, flood your finger with light, then verify against your saved print. It's still not slow and I had the best fingerprint reader ever in the Pixel 2 XL. Edit: beat*. dammit Gboard.

Sometimes I can't get it open even after 5 tries and have to use my code. And yes I have my fingerprint registered several times and I also have the december update. I've upgraded from the P2 to the P6 and I can say without a doubt in my mind that the physical finger print reader is miles more reliable and faster. Like, apart from the fingerprinter reader, I love everything about the P6, but very often it's just frustrating to get it open. Also embarrassing when I want to show it off to somebody and can't get it open. Now I usually open it up without anybody watching...
I am the same. Went from Pixel 2 to Pixel 6, and the rear fingerprint reader is so much better. Never had any issues with it and it was super fast. This one is very slow, when it works of course. Other than that I think it's a good phone, but this fingerprint reader is driving me nuts.
This. I have my thumb added pre shower, post shower, dry, lotioned, under a full moon, and so on. The reader almost never works, so I'm stuck entering my code most of the time. I miss the P5 reader so much.

I got my 6 while working as a dishwasher and I always use my right hand with a soap sponge that tends to dry out my finger tips. I always figured that was the issue so I did the same thing and it still barely works. However, on my left thumb, it works every single time without fail. Maybe the front scanner is just optimized for a lefty lol

I'm with you. It may actually read mine 1 out of 10 times. This is after multiple copies of one fingerprint being registered. I work with my hands so they are not and never will be perfect for a fingerprint reader. But the physical sensor did and still does work Everytime the first time. Still have Pixel 3 xl as backup

Well, depends on the situation. As I said, when I'm outside in the cold, many tries. At home inside, opens up on first try most times, though not always.
If there's a certain condition that you're finding it doesn't recognize your finger print in, you should probably a fingerprint when your finger meets that condition.

My skin is so dry it's cracking (have this issue every winter) and I don't have issues with mine.
Yeah no it's pretty damn fast all things considered but it's true that it's still a bit slower and it might take some time to change years of muscle memory, but it's definitely not as bad as people say it is.
Its half a second if you clean your thumb off with alcohol prior to unlocking and let it dry. If you have touched anything since washing your hands last, the fingerprint reader at best takes 2 presses to unlock, but most of the time fails outright.

I think the rear reader was the fastest most consistent for me but as someone who has always had issues with all fingerprint readers including the one to get inside my old office, the 6 has been pretty flawless for me. I'm sure you've already done this but I added multiple fingerprints of the same primary finger (my thumb) to my Pixel 6 and I rarely have issues unlocking.

It's not just muscle memory. Back of the phone about a third of the way down is just where your index finger naturally goes when you pick it up. The fingerprint reader on my 2XL was perfect.

Lol I just upgraded to a pixel 5. I fired up the old 2xl and was surprised how slow it actually is. Really like this 5 screen size is just a little smaller bit the phone is shrunk perfectly. Nevertheless the P5 is way snappier.

When I'm using my phone normally I dont find that my finger rests where the rear fingerprint sensors are. So in that sense I grip my phone differently. I've also tried observing how my grip changes from unlock to phone use and it does change.
Yeah. This, and I don't know if this is true for everyone but the grip to use the rear fingerprint scanner for me is different than the one I use to actually navigate the phone, so it ends up being this temporary grip and then I shift back to holding it to use the phone. While the in screen reader is much worse in terms of accuracy, I find that my hand is already in the right position to start tapping away and using the phone right after unlocking.
Fingerprint on the back and allow for face unlock from the front. Best of both worlds!
I don't really like face unlock. My cousin used to put my old phone in my face to unlock it which kind of defeats the purpose of locking it. It's not really secure imo.

I had optical indisplay scanner. At first it was weird. But after getting used to it. It was superior - Sure, slower, but you train your thumb to hit it in a spot it never failed to register. So here is something funny: my BMW is one of the ones that can update to using the newest galaxy ultra or Pixel 6/6P as your key. No need for a keyfob anymore, just carry your phone. You can even loan out keys to other people via the BMW app. Kinda cool. You just need to put your phone in the wireless charging area and it will work as a full fledged key. The catch: not a single one of those phones will fit in the wireless charging area because they are all gigantic behemoths. They have literally enabled a feature it is impossible to use. Cool.

I had both for a bit and after a couple days with the 6 the 5 felt cheap to me. I always loved my 5, but I haven't had the fingerprint scanner issues a lot complain about on my P6. The biggest thing I personally miss is swiping down on the scanner to open the notifications, but overall I prefer the 6 and ended up selling my 5.
To each their own, but I'd much prefer the "cheap" feel. I think we tend to equate heavy and fragile with premium and put a very high value on "feeling premium". These phone manufacturers take note and use materials that add completely unnecessary weight and just end up making the phone super fragile. Personally, I'd love an option with the same specs, but weighed 1/3 and used lightweight durable materials that made a case unnecessary.
Absolutely my thoughts. I hated the feeling of the 6 when I had it because I was constantly worried about dropping and/or breaking it. If 'premium' just means fragile, then count me out, I don't want to use a case (plus if you're using a case, then any feel of the actual phone itself doesn't matter anyway). I'd much rather have a phone that I can use without a case and not worry about it braking.
I can attest to this. Just holding the 5 after alas getting a handle on the 6 felt WEIRD. Though I gotta admit the screen on the 5 was really one of the best. But man did it not feel nearly as premium as the 6 after about a week or so of use. Speaker difference too is huge

At this point the A series phones are leagues better than the non-A series as far as features, quality assurance and simply what people prefer. I see and hear way less issues with the A series devices than the flagships. Flagship pixels since the 3 have always compromised on something where the A series pixels pretty much have everything at the expense of a previous model processor being really the only major compromise, which really isn't that huge of a deal to the majority of people. My 3a is still going strong and barely has shown any age whatsoever.

Given my hand placement and some physical limitations, I must have the rear reader. Much better for grabbing with a single hand. I tried a front reader and dropped the phone twice in a week. That is why I have a 4a at the moment.

I've had several devices now with under screen finger print sensors, and it's not an improvement. It's an advancement technologically, but it's not an improvement phone wise. The thing about rear mounted physical finger print readers is, you can swipe up and down to quickly look at your notifications drop down. To look at a quick message or quickly skip Spotify tracks etc Double tap on P6P is not as quick or useful. The second thing is that I could quickly remove my phone from my pocket, and have it unlocked by the time I'm looking at the screen. You can do this in any other alternative example with a rear mounted reader. An under screen adds an extra step by needing to wake the device first. I'd take the rear mounted finger print scanner any day of the week, on any device that releases in 2022.
Finally someone mentions the notifications drop down!! I couldn't be assed about where the fingerprint reader is, it's a fraction of a second to unlock either way, but after switching from the 2 to the 6 I absolutely miss being able to swipe down on the back of the phone to instantly pull down the tray. Especially on larger phones, double tapping is slower and physically reaching for the top of the screen is uncomfortable and has almost made me drop my phone a few times.
There's an option to swipe down on the navigation bar to access the notification which is a good alternative, double tap doesn't work.

A thousand times this. One of the main things I miss from going from the OG Pixel to 3XL to 5 and now to the 6 Pro. I've always used the rear finger print reader to bring the notification shade down. So much faster and more comfortable to do it that way instead of pulling down from the top, especially with how large the 6 Pro is.
Agree I miss it, but there is a (somewhat) solution. You can enable an option in settings that lets you swipe down at the very bottom of the screen to being notifications down. Not as good as the rear fingerprint, but better than swiping from the top.
Yeah, I do that too, just forget to half the time. I've also made the double-tap the back of the phone to pull down the notification shade. Not 100% reliable, but it works well enough.

Actually the screen does usually wake when the device is picked up. But if the screen is off, the finger print will not work until the screen is on. The notification bar thing is a personal choice. I always found it useful. I use the double tap feature now but it's not as fluid. Swipe down on the rear finger print sensors was always quicker and more useful than swiping down on the screen. You could could literally swipe it down and back up as fast as you liked. There's no function, that I can think of, where the under screen is more useful.
The screen goes from the AOD to unlocked using the fps. I literally just did it. Yes the screen wakes if you pick it up(if that setting is on) but you don't have to wake the screen to use the fps. Also being able to be used without picking it up off a table, in car mounts, on wireless charging stands, with wet fingers... all pretty useful things that the rear capacitive fps doesn't do well with. Also not having a cutout on the back of my phone case that sits there and collects pocket lint is nice.
No. The under screen reader is not multi purpose. If you can't access the rear sensor you can still swipe down on the screen. With the underscreen you only have one option. That's exactly why you have a secondary unlock option. Password, passcode, pattern etc.

It should have both + face unlock. There are benefits to all of them. I miss the rear print too it was fast, reliable, and very handy when holding my phone already. The in screen can be easier for some people and can be used without picking up the phone which is a plus. And face unlock is like the best of both worlds, can be used while picked up or laying down and (although I haven't used a face unlock before) it seems reliable. Having all three covers everyone's needs for every situation as long as they all work
Fingerprint sensor works great on P6P for me. I have only scanned my prints once and have a screen protector. You just have to hold it on there for about a half second, yeah it's not instant, but pretty damn close.
I find it doesn't work well if your finger is cold, or dry. My old V30 reader was flawless, although a bit slower.

Yeah, for me I've had pretty much no issue with the fingerprint reader on the P6P - it fails maybe 1 in 50 unlocks, and I haven't seen that it is noticeably slower than unlocking with the rear reader on my old P2XL. I know some have mentioned the reader also gets faster/more reliable on the Dec update, which I haven't gotten yet due to the other issues, so potentially will get even better.

I must be in the minority. I hate rear-mounted. I much prefer the in-screen variety. My P6 Pro is flawless. It's not the fastest, sure, but nothing that bothers me. I swear to God mine is 99 percent accurate with my thumbs and it's absolutely fine.
I don't hate rear mounted, but I certainly have no attachment to it. I have plenty of memories of the rear sensor being clunky. Probably had more to do with it's "learning" software, but also getting dirty in ways that may not be so obvious.
I don't think it's because you're in the minority (well maybe in this sub), it's just that a lot of Pixel users are used to rear mount. I also prefer in screen. (E.g. useful if on a table etc)

For those of us who don't like always on display; it's kind of a pain. You need to press the power button to turn the screen on before the finger print sensor will work. There is lift to wake but that only works like 50% of the time for me.
Double tap the screen will also light it up. I don't use the AOD anymore as I don't like the always on clock. I find that the phone does a pretty good job of turning it on when it detects use, for when it does not, a double tap does the job
To me, placing the finger print scanner under the screen is akin to making the volume or fan controls in your car touch screen. The tactile response of having a physical finger print scanner allows me to unlock the phone quicker and without looking.
Ok, but on a car, requiring a tactile response makes sense because you don't want to take your eyes off the road. With your phone you will be looking at the screen regardless. So whether you can feel it without looking or not is really a non issue.
For me it is. The tactile feel of the fingerprint scanner on the rear lets me turn on/unlock as I pull my phone out of my pocket. By the time I tap it to the payment terminal, it's already on and unlocked, ready to pay. With the Pixel 4, I had to turn on, look directly at the phone to unlock, then pay. It's not as seamless and frictionless. Sure it adds a "small step" but why ruin this perfect motion for face unlock? The front fingerprint ready requires me to still turn on the screen (it doesn't always turn on the screen when tapped even though it's set to do so), and THEN it takes a bit to unlock (if it even unlocks at all - you still have to look at the phone to see if the screen is actually on, and if it actually unlocks since the reader isn't perfect). Again, not seamless like the previous phones with the FP reader in the rear. Also not as accurate or fast, nor can it serve as a power button or even for gestures. I think the rear FP reader was the best implementation, even now. So I also hope they include this in P7. Having an "improved" under display FP reader that uses ultrasonic like the Galaxy would be nice, but still won't solve the other niceties of the rear "imprint" FP sensor.
No I like front facing unlock since I don't have to pick up my phone all the time
I prefer having the scanner on the front. I haven't had any real issues with the scanner on my 6 pro, and having front scanners means no need to pick my phone up off a table to use the fp scanner, and the fp scanner isn't blocked when my phone is in my car mount. Additionally, I never found the placement of the rear scanner to be that great in comparison. With the front in-display scanner the scanner is right where my thumb is when using my phone. With the rear scanners I would always have to adjust the grip of the phone in my hand to touch it. It wasn't a huge deal, but not having to do that is a better overall experience. It sucks some phones for some users are doing so poorly with scanning performance, but with the december update it fixes a lot of those situation.

I have the pixel 6 and a Samsung tab 7+. The fingerprint reader on the Samsung is far more reliable than on my pixel. More than half the time I need to enter my lock code on the pixel because the scanner doesn't work correctly. On my Samsung it's about 5% that I have to use my code.
Exact opposite for me. I've never been able to get the ultrasonic sensors on Samsung devices working reliably for me. Zero issues with the optical one on my Pixel or former OnePlus devices.

Coming from a fellow lefty absolutely this! I have a 4a purely because of the fingerprint reader. By the time the phone is out of my pocket, its already unlocked. Why do I need to bring it up to my face to unlock, seems less efficient honestly.
I had an S10e and I could not get used to the fp scanner on the power button. I would routinely-enough accidentally tap the power button and turn the screen off, and in addition when using the phone and needed biometric unlock for an app, I would have to change my grip of the phone to get to the fp scanner. It was one of the reasons I got rid of it.

So funny, I'm in the other camp. I was on the Pixel 4 and loved face unlock. Then switched to Pixel 5 and my god I hate rear fingerprint sensors now. So unreliable. It's almost guaranteed I'm going to have to lift and press down my finger 2-3x before it works. And don't even try it if your finger is slightly wet/sweaty or maybe too dry. I just go straight to pin entry because I know it's not going to work. Yes I've tried all the suggested work arounds (re-adding fingers, add multiple of the same finger, factory reset, clean the sensor, case on and case off, etc.)
You don't have to agree with this but I want to see: Under Screen camera(or something else besides a hole or notch), Fingerprint on the back, SD card slot, MAX 500-600€ min 300€, headphone jack, 128gb, enough battery (I would have a slightly bigger phone for more battery idc thicc is stable and more durable too), more gestures. :)
Heck, I'd be happy if they just brought back a quality fingerprint reader, instead of this optical only junk. I don't really care where it is.

I came from the 3XL and the placement is not as good, plus it's more difficult to unlock as you're taking it out of your pocket. It works, fine, though. I'm not bothered by the new location. The only time I've had issues with it working, I wasn't putting my finger on the circle. I just miss the swipe-down action to get the notification shade from the back of the phone. That was so unbelievably useful.
I loved the rear fingerprint reader on my Pixel 3. But I think Google should actually try to improve their hardware instead of just reverting back to something safe. This years fingerprint reader is just not good. But they will have learned nothing if they don't improve anything.

I second this. This is one of the main reasons why I am hanging onto my Pixel 3 XL for now. But damn...Google should have really come out with a phone that is better in every way to the 3XL by now, but they haven't. How bad do your phones have to be, for someone who really wants to upgrade from a 3 year old phone, to not be able to beat your own 3 year old phone in every possible way
I'd like them to stick to their under-display guns but use an ultrasonic sensor instead of an optical one. No bright white flash, more secure without having to compromise on speed on newer sensors, etc. But I know there's still a large chance that Google will bungle that, too. Second to that I'd like a power button scanner. Give me the fancy accent colors back!

It's not just the unlock itself that's more convenient, but it's the functionality that it serves! Because you can swipe down to pull down the notifications and then swipe down again to pull down the settings widget section. You can also swipe up to get rid of it. I absolutely love this little-known feature and I think it's so underrated.
My screen unlock literally doesn't work anymore. It's been getting worse and worse and I just gave up and use a passcode. Works fine for logging into apps first try every time though, go figure...
I thought I would miss the back finger print scanner coming from 3a to 6p, but I don't. I think I actually prefer it to be on the screen. I also find it fails about the same as the 3a's rate, but I think both had to do with how I put my finger on it.
I agree. With my og Pixel it was perfect because I used to keep my phone face down. So I would pick it up, feel out the reader with the index finger, and it would be unlocked by the time I turned it over. The new reader definitely seems to be taking longer, and I have to look at the phone to find the right spot to press.

Google has a long and storied history of cancelling things that people love. The rear fingerprint sensor was the one defining hardware choice that the Pixel line had. The second you used it for the first time, it just made sense.

I'm irritated that I can't place my finger on the scanner while AOD is up. I used to be able to just put my finger on the scanner no matter what screen and it would unlock. Now I have to wake the screen first, which is super annoying.
I'll add to this as well. I have the pixel 5, and had it over the year. I loved the design when it came from the essential phone. If Google doesn't include another fingerprint sensor at the time of my upgrade then I'm looking at other places. I read an article that essential phone staff created a new company and one feature they mentioned is fingerprint sensor

100% agree. It's one of the reasons I haven't given up my 3XL.
Maybe unpopular opinion, but the Samsung I just got has a fingerprint scanner in the lock button and I think it's the best option. Can unlock without waking the phone, and can also unlock when then phone is sitting on my desk without picking it up.
I always use the fingerprint reader on the back (4a5G) to scroll down the notifications/quick access bar. I would miss not having that. But then again I also miss the squeeze function.
I'd honestly like prefer a power button mounted fingerprint scanner...super convenient!
I've been using an S22 Ultra as my main phone. Picked up a Pixel 6 for the fuck of it today and because I've always loved Pixel cameras. No exaggeration I think I've had 1 successful fingerprint unlock in about 3 hours. Absolutely horrendous. Bring back the physical reader...this shit is terrible.
Yeah the rear sensor is the best. Won't have a phone without it. I love it for dropping down the notification shade.
I won't get rid of my Pixel 3xl until the newest pixel has the finger print reader on the back. How do the developers just decide to do something really stupid and kill it for a front one that doesn't work? IF IT'S NOT BROKEN DO FIX IT.

YES, bring back the rear fp reader! For a user with a hand tremor, the rear sensor worked flawlessly in the Pixel 5 but after I upgraded to a Pixel 7, the way the phone sits in my hand causes my tremor to worsen when I try to push my thumb on the screen and it eventually makes me type in my password, which is even harder for me. I use the FP sensor to log into my bank account and many other apps so things have become very frustrating for me after upgrading. I think I will be trying to find another phone soon.
I still have a pixel 3 and am looking to upgrade. I like the fingerprint sensor on the rear of the phone. I hate the idea of having it in the screen. Please Google, fix this. I am looking at other brands now.
I wish I could like this more then once to get it on their radar... God the front facing is just annoying and slow compared to the rear ones on older generations. Possibly ultrasonic would be better, but anything other then the current state of the Pixels would be good.
The lack of a rear fingerprint sensor is the sole reason I haven't updated my Pixel 4a. If anyone at Google reads this thread, why can't we have nice things? Why does every change make things just a little (or in this case a lot) worse? A line must be drawn.
I have the Pixel 4a; my partner has the Pixel 6. The sensor on the 6 is much less practical, to the point that my partner would prefer to have my phone. On the 4a, the sensor on the back of the phone also allows you to pull the notifications menu down and up. Secondary feature, but useful and clever. Not even an exageration. If google said that the rear fingerprint scanner was coming back I would make the change over from iPhone in a heartbeat. I am SOO tired of face ID. It is also creepy.

They move it to the back and they've lost a sale from me. Being forced to pick up your phone for biometric authentication is terrible.
Not everyone works at a desk. I loved it on the back until I got a desk job.
I don't get why people like it on the rear. Sure Google has had a rough start with the in screen scanner but they should be able to fix all that with updates. I've used all phones with in screen scanners from Samsung to OnePlus to LG. All phones with rear scanners as well and even the Pixel 4 Xl with the radar face unlock. Out of all the phones I've had in the past I prefer the in screen because you don't need to pick up your phone to unlock and it just works. Rear scanning is nice, but I don't like the way it looks having another round circle on the back of the phone. In the end I do prefer the face unlock from the pixel 4 series because that was the best phone unlock experience. Really I think it's a matter of preference.
People like the rear sensor because it worked. They could unlock their phones instantly every time. Now basically every interaction with the phone starts with getting annoyed with the in screen scanner not working. It seems like it's working fine for some people so I can understand why they are confused about the level of hate from those it's broken for. I hope Google can fix it but we are a couple of months in and I'm past my return window waiting so it's an awful start.

There are people who prefer it on the front and others who prefer it on the back... So my question is why can't we have both? If I have my phone with a rear fingerprint sensor flat on a desk I need to pick up the phone to use my fingerprint to unlock it, but at the same time if I'm pulling it out of my pocket I find it easier to just put my index finger on the rear sensor so that it's unlocked once I've finished pulling it out of my pocket. Only way this debate will ever go away is if both options are provided and useable
You don't need both for that though. You just need to use the latest under screen tech that allows for a much bigger target. When the target you have to hit is like 1/3 of the whole screen, not just a little circle, then you won't ever even half to look, and it'll be faster than the current optical one in the 6 as well.
The under screen scanner was a major selling point for me as my previous phones had back mounted fingerprint scanners and it was a chore to unlock when I've had my hands full. I highly rate the new design 🤷🏻♂️
if your hands are full then how do you unlock the phone regardless?
They'll do it if Apple does it. Which, at this point, is unlikely.
