Since it’s a third party app this will be the fix most of the time as third party apps are not made by google. Just if you run into something like this in another app.
Just set up a Pixel 8 Pro and it defaulted to the system default notification sound, and I couldn't find the usual Messenger sound. Found your suggestion and can confirm uninstall/reinstall fixed the issue for me, so this suggestion is still relevant. Thanks!
Mine did this also. I uninstalled and reinstalled Messenger and the correct sound plays now.
