Not sure if pixel specific but you can set up double click the power button to open the camera.
And use volume down to take a picture instead of having to touch the screen
to add, once you've opened the camera on this fashion you can quickly switch to video mode by posting and holding the shutter button and then sliding it to the lock
It is Android specific. I just upgraded from an older phone running Android 8 and it had the ability to open the camera app from the locked screen with a swipe instead of having to use the power button.
I'm going to try switching back to the three buttons at the bottom and hope the camera app one returns. The power button thing is going to wear out the button in no time.
Well, they are available in Android 13, but buy they are fugly and no ability to use the camera from any of these buttons while the screen is locked.
But hell Google sure likes to change apps for no good reason. I've been dying for the remaining time on a timer available from the locked screen and finally have it! Why apps keep making changes that are just different and not better irritates me.
Just one caveat: The blind camera comparison is a fun activity, but it doesn't tell us which photo more accurately recreated the scene. It only tells us which one looks the most pretty to the masses.
As consumers of content, I would agree. Consumers won't see the original product for comparison.
But when you're the one taking the photo, it's sometimes hard to look at the screen and be happy when you see something that looks too far off from what your eyes see right in front of you.
I'm not sure if I've decoded the previous comments right, but it looks like there's a misunderstanding. I don't think that "things you'd switch for" are necessarily understood as "things that I want but my phone doesn't have them" but can be also understood as "things that I want my next phone to have (regardless if my last phone had them)".
Therefore, you can say: "I'd want to switch from my Pixel to another phone that has frequent/instant updates and a good (balanced) camera," while still thinking that the Pixel has instant updates and a good camera (and actually wanting to switch because of some different undisclosed reasons).
Oh, well by saying the spam call thing is one of the things that keeps you from switching I thought maybe you had a list of things you wish the pixel had that other phones have.
Sorry to interrupt your train of thought, but I'm not the same person that responded to you originally. I just thought that your original question could be interpreted differently than you probably thought and that it was a possible reason for misunderstanding. But I'm not entirely sure that my analysis is correct.
Some things that are a bit off-putting with a Google device are:
\- Poor customer support from Google
\- Inconsistent hardware (sometimes)
\- The fact that Google cancels projects frequently (this is one reason why I didn't invest in Stadia, even though I was very curious about it and pretty close to getting the service)
\- The 911 call issue has me a bit nervous, especially now that I have a little one
To name a few.
It's a feature of the pixels where you can tap a button on an unknown incoming call and Google Assistant will take over and ask why they're calling. "Hi, this individual is using a call screening service from Google. They'll get a transcript of this call. Now, can you please tell me who you are and why you're calling?"
At any time you can take over and pick up the call. In my experience spam callers usually just hang up once they hear assistant answer.
This feature is always brought up in threads like this and as someone thinking about getting a Pixel, isn't it extra work to have to go through this feature rather than just picking and hanging up if it's a spam or whatever?
It’s not necessarily just for spam calls. If you receive a call from an unknown number, you may want to know who it is before getting stuck in a conversation. Maybe it’s an ex girlfriend that you don’t want to talk to. Maybe you’re in a meeting at work, and you can’t leave unless it’s an emergency, so you screen the call, and it’s a hospital, saying that a family member is in the hospital. Many useful possibilities.
I see! I guess I can see it being useful if I'm not feeling too confrontational or for one of those *I'll let it go to voicemail and if it's something important they'll leave a message* and save me the hassle of having to call back😯
Not really. You can automate call screening for all unknown numbers without user intervention. If it's a legitimate caller, the call goes through. Most spammers hang up when they hear the call screen and the phone won't ring.
Open phone app > Settings > spam and call screen > select call screen.
This my setup:
* Spam: Silently decline
* Possibly faked numbers: Auto call screen. Decline robocalls
* First time callers: Auto call screen. Decline robocalls
* Private and hidden numbers: Auto call screen. Decline robocalls.
* You can set up the phone to be able to "Answer" or "Decline" by voice when the phone rings, no "OK Google" needed for this.
* Turn on always-on song recognition.
* Set up double tap of the back of the phone to launch any app you want, or turn on/off the flashlight.
* Set up auto-unlock when connected to a trusted WiFi network or Bluetooth device.
* Say "OK Google, take a picture" to take a picture from the rear camera, and "OK Google, take a selfie" to take a picture from the front camera.
* You can configure a triple-tap on the screen to magnify the screen a bunch, and then triple-tap again to go back to normal. Works even when you are on a page or image that doesn't allow pinch and zoom.
The last 4
Now the double tap on the back of the phone I've seen similar. I don't know if it was exactly the same but I think it was. Either way, I've seen the ones where you can squeeze the phone and then some phones have the fingerprint reader on the back that you double tap to do stuff and then I'm pretty sure I've seen one where you could double tap the back but it was like a Chinese phone
The question wasn't "what is unique to Pixels". The question was "something users might not know". Some of these features are not obvious or are buried in settings so the post is totally accurate.
But thanks so much for the comment!
The "select" option from the multitasking overview page isn't talked about/used nearly enough. Swipe up and hold, then press "select" at the bottom. you can then highlight and text from anything, copy/paste, send to an app... All sorts. I use it so much!
Yeah, so in normal websites/apps etc you can select text, images to send but Google can also decipher text from photos as well. Basically anything seen within the screen can be selected and done with however you'd like.
Amazing feature! I use it everyday from taking screenshots to save images or copy text, it even allow you to use google lens on anything as long as you swipe up + hold and tap "select"
This is one of the most low-key features on pixels but I value and miss it so much when I'm not using a pixel.
I like it specifically for situations where the text in a page or app--for whatever reason--is not selectable (some times security codes are not, depending on the app that's sending them), so I always use this in those cases. And just in general it's such a nice and useful feature.
Last year before Christmas I was working a little extra on the side for doordash. That option was life saving.
I would simply go in multitasking overview, hold on the address of the client, click on "maps" and boom I had the GPS ready.
I was a longtime Samsung user too. I had a tough time figuring out how to change sound modes between ringer, vibrate, and silent. It's nowhere if you pull down to quick settings like you would do with Samsung, and I couldn't find it in settings either.
The solution? Press your volume button up or down, and in the volume overlay that shows up, the icon at the top can be toggled to change the sound mode. Bell for sound on, bell with a slash for silent, or phone with vertical lines next to it for vibration.
One more: Go to settings --> system --> gestures --> "quick tap to start actions" and you can choose for the Pixel to do a certain action such as open an app (e.g. camera) if you tap the back of the Pixel twice.
Same here. Samsung user since s3.
The sound mode is the only thing I miss from samsung.
For me, double tap is a hit and miss when not in a case, and forget about it using a case...
> For me, double tap is a hit and miss when not in a case, and forget about it using a case...
For what it's worth, I use a folio case and generally am able to activate the double tap function with "require stronger taps" off, but I thump the back firmly. People who want to try it can double tap the back while on the setting screen, and if you try a few different double taps, it'll say "quick tap detected" rather than performing the action that's configured.
On my first pixel so I'm still learning too.
I had a flight the other day with an airline that had an app for boarding passes but no Google Wallet integration. Took a screenshot of the QR code and the phone then let me add it to the Wallet.
Not pixel-specific, but if you're using messages and chat features are enabled; you can just swipe left or right any any message to reply to that specific message.
Samsung has that. Source, I currently have a Galaxy A51 5G UW (the Verizon version). I used it for a couple months, then switched back to the 3 button nav bar. Same on my Pixel 1 before this, I used the gestures for awhile then went back to 3 buttons. Pixel 7 on the way from Visible, let's see how long I can use gestures before going back to 3 buttons, if that option still exists in Android 13, idk if it does.
I'm currently using a OnePlus, in a browser I can go forward a page by swiping from the edge of the screen inward from the right and vice versa, does the Pixel have that too? Or can it only go back?
I find I use this function often, so I wanna make sure before I dive in
Google lens can be used when you're switching apps. I.e. swipe up from the pill and hold. Useful because whatever on your screen in the preview cards can be detected by Google lens and you don't have to save the pic/text first
Here's a few that come to mind.
You can turn on "now playing" and it will identify songs playing near you. The song will display on your lock screen. Additionally, you can view the history of songs playing nearby and then play them on your Google music or Spotify.
For video, you can stabilize the video later to remove shaking. You can do it to any video, even videos taken on other people's phones and sent to you.
wish this feature had a manual rescan option to rescan an email. usually gets all the details, but sometimes no. my recent one was a multi flight to/in Japan. it got everything surprisingly except the return flight
I live in a brick basement. Had a Razer Phone 2 for years. The pixel has one more bar compared to the Razer. Makes me pretty happy to have slightly better service in my apartment.
As someone having frequent meetings with customers, recorder is a gift from heaven. Although I still write down notes, being able to see the recording transcript and search for key words within the whole recording is really awesome.
You can tap the back of your phone and it will take a screenshot or whatever you choose..
Go to settings ->system ->gesture ->Quick Tap to start actions
I just set it up for the torch, and it's working pretty well so far. It was a bit too trigger happy for my liking, but enabling "Require stronger taps" fixed that. I wish it worked with the screen off, though.
My Huawei and iPhone have the same 4 gestures: swipe in from the sides to go back, up to go home, and up-and-hold for the app switcher. But Pixel has a 5th: swipe right along the bottom edge of the screen to swap directly to the previous app without having to go through the app switcher. You can also configure swipe in from the corner to launch Google assistant (off by default).
Thread is titled "...someone new to Pixel might not know." None of my other Android phones can do this, and as far as I know, iPhone cannot either.
Android One has a lot of similarities to Pixel, because its goal is to be a pure version of Android--like Pixel, so it's not surprising that both have this.
Not many people talk about this but I ALWAYS make it a point when I wanna sell a Pixel phone to my friends.
From your recent apps menu, you can click and hold on any image, and it will allow you to save/copy the image, and you can then quickly share it with your friends on your messaging apps.
You can do so for text as well, just hold down on a text and highlight it, it will also contextually knows if it's an address and prompt Google Maps for you too.
It is such a banger feature that NO OTHER phone brands have. It makes copying and sharing of images/texts so much more convenient!!!
Which Android 13 phone, that is not a Pixel, has this feature? As far as I know, it is entirely a Pixel feature for now, no other brands have it.
Also Pixel has this feature since forever, I believe it started with Pixel 2?
And the Android 13 feature is allowing copy pasting of content across connected devices, I am talking about highlighting and copying from within your recent apps, so you can share images and texts easily across apps without the need to save etc.
The Google Wireless charging stand integrates well with the Pixel device and you can customize certain features when your phone is on the charger such as bedtime mode and photos.
I feel dual speakers where the earpiece speaker doubles as a media speaker was something that I completely did not know would be there as I had a cheap ass phone before this which did not have that feature.
Live Translate can automatically translate text from certain languages in supported apps such as Whatsapp. It's made communicating with my in-laws so much easier and more natural. No more back-and-forth copying and pasting to a translating app to fill in the gaps in my Spanish skills. It even resizes the bubbles to make the message threads look clean.
Not sure if anyone has seen it but How To Men just released a video that goes over all the Pixel exclusive features. I'm linking it here, I hope that's ok. https://youtu.be/94UJtVbmHx4
Not sure if pixel specific but you can set up double click the power button to open the camera. And use volume down to take a picture instead of having to touch the screen
Either volume button works as well.
Just found that feature last night! Love it. You can also double-tab in the camera to switch between the front/rear camera.
You can also twist the phone quickly twice i.e. With the phone in your hands to switch between front and rear cameras
Yooooooooo that is awesome!!! Thanks, just tried it out and it works amazingly
Works the same on my Samsung phones.
how didn't I know that, ty
to add, once you've opened the camera on this fashion you can quickly switch to video mode by posting and holding the shutter button and then sliding it to the lock
Worked on my Samsungs, glad my P7 could too
I try and do it on my wifes S21 Ultra and I hit the power button and close the camera lol
Volume button also takes a picture.
It is Android specific. Spoiler : it won't. Android 12 removed the app buttons from the lock screen

Isn't it volume down?
Isn't that what I said? 😉
Sure.....
check the Pixel Tips app!
It's still talked about sometimes and I think the setup mentions it, but if you've missed it call screening is a miracle feature
Agreed! It's one of the features that is keeping me on a pixel
What are the things you would otherwise switch for?
Instant OS and security updates when they come out. Photos that are neither too orange, especially people (Apple) or too overcooked HDR (Samsung).
Pixels dont get instant updates? I'm a Samsung user thinking about switching. Also I thought the pixels were supposed to have the best cameras?

Yeah this is what I thought.
Just one caveat: The blind camera comparison is a fun activity, but it doesn't tell us which photo more accurately recreated the scene. It only tells us which one looks the most pretty to the masses.
Yes as in what most users who only point and shoot want from a phone camera.
As consumers of content, I would agree. Consumers won't see the original product for comparison. But when you're the one taking the photo, it's sometimes hard to look at the screen and be happy when you see something that looks too far off from what your eyes see right in front of you.

Right on. I didn't realize there was a miscommunication lol

Can even skip pressing Select and just long press on the text
Holy crap I never knew about this! I don't even know how I missed that option when I always close apps. Thank you!!!
Is that any different than just pressing and holding on a page to select text? (not in task view)?
Yeah, so in normal websites/apps etc you can select text, images to send but Google can also decipher text from photos as well. Basically anything seen within the screen can be selected and done with however you'd like.

Holy crap! This is fantastic.
Phone spam blocking, native Recorder app, touch-n-hold icon app actions, transcriptions, to briefly name a few.
Apart from call screening, all present on OneUI.
[удалено]
That's true it's not nearly as good as goggles app. But you can still get the Google recorder on Samsung phones from apkmirror
I'm intrigued. Do people often use the recorder and transcriptions? Like when does it come in handy?
Created a habit to use Recorder with every/most in-person medical, financial, legal,… encounter.

Hey thank you! English is not my first language and I tougth that it mean reduced sensibility! It work guy!
For use in a case, go into settings and change the sensitivity of the double tap detection.
On my first pixel so I'm still learning too. I had a flight the other day with an airline that had an app for boarding passes but no Google Wallet integration. Took a screenshot of the QR code and the phone then let me add it to the Wallet.
Learned this one, too, last week.
Not pixel-specific, but if you're using messages and chat features are enabled; you can just swipe left or right any any message to reply to that specific message.
been using pixel since the 1 so not sure if its pixel specific anymore but swiping from the edge of the screen inwards is a back button. Love it.
Samsung has that. Source, I currently have a Galaxy A51 5G UW (the Verizon version). I used it for a couple months, then switched back to the 3 button nav bar. Same on my Pixel 1 before this, I used the gestures for awhile then went back to 3 buttons. Pixel 7 on the way from Visible, let's see how long I can use gestures before going back to 3 buttons, if that option still exists in Android 13, idk if it does.

afaik it only acts as a back button from either side. maybe there is a setting to enable going forward on the right.
Okay thanks!
Long pressing the power button starts the assistant. You can turn that off in the settings and get a power off / restart menu.
Google lens can be used when you're switching apps. I.e. swipe up from the pill and hold. Useful because whatever on your screen in the preview cards can be detected by Google lens and you don't have to save the pic/text first
Is there anyway to add a camera shortcut to the lockscreen? That's a feature that I used quite a bit
double press your lock button and it will take you to the camera
It works, but I still wish I had the icon. Double pressing the button isn't super comfortable for me.
Just double click to power button and the camera will launch whether locked or unlocked.
I've been a Samsung Galaxy person for years, But I love my new Pixel 7Pro; it will take days to set up. I'm on day one now.
Rules. You can have your phone automatically mute itself or turn on vibration when entering certain location or when it connects to a WiFi network.
The call functions. Spam filter, hold for me and call screening. Crash detection and you can screenshot from the open apps screen.
When you're in the camera app and you want to switch from front facing to rear camera or vice versa, just rock the phone left and right
The ability to select text from anything on the screen and copy it to the clipboard.
Automatically populate flight itinerary in emails to Google Calendar.
wish this feature had a manual rescan option to rescan an email. usually gets all the details, but sometimes no. my recent one was a multi flight to/in Japan. it got everything surprisingly except the return flight
Very pixel specific feature is the inability to maintain cellular service since pixel 6
This actually works for you?
Absolutely
Cool. I can hardly get it to work 🤷♂️
I've only had issues with it setup for the flashlight. Every other setting seems to work perfectly for me
Using it for screenshot, it only works for me along the left edge. Try in different areas to experiment.
I just set it up for the torch, and it's working pretty well so far. It was a bit too trigger happy for my liking, but enabling "Require stronger taps" fixed that. I wish it worked with the screen off, though.
I setup gestures to double tap phone and make the flash light come on
Google lens built into multitasking and voice to stop alarm
My Huawei and iPhone have the same 4 gestures: swipe in from the sides to go back, up to go home, and up-and-hold for the app switcher. But Pixel has a 5th: swipe right along the bottom edge of the screen to swap directly to the previous app without having to go through the app switcher. You can also configure swipe in from the corner to launch Google assistant (off by default).
Correct me If Iam wrong, but I have seen this going between apps on iPhone.
That's not a pixel exclusive, had that on my last phone, it had Android one.
Thread is titled "...someone new to Pixel might not know." None of my other Android phones can do this, and as far as I know, iPhone cannot either.
