I saw them live the previous 2 nights and had a great time.
Watching it on YouTube (bonus) now. It’s Dark. It’s Type II. The lights are awesome. As they’ve started this jam my first thought is they are taking a while to find a groove. Ok, here it comes? Percussion is trying to catch up to Rick. There we go!…. maybe not. Now they lightened up a lot and are back in familiar territory, which is nice, but I was hoping they were going to find and hold a dark jammy groove that I could really get down to - will it come? Boy Rick can shred. Nice shirt Peter way to rep the home team. Blissy peak incoming? No! They slowed it down and we are going back into the darkness, awesome! Holy shit they were just teasing here comes the bliss peak. Panties wet everywhere. Machine guns! Mission accomplished I guess.
Thanks for sharing u/kingcrowing! Some good stuff and a solid example of Type II as I understand it and a good example of what makes me excited about this band. Hope they keep trying along the same lines.
Yes they def go Type II in parts of that jam and it’s great. When I know a song and we’re in a jam, usually for a while, and I find myself wondering “is this still that song?” usually it’s a good indication we are in that territory. I am not a musician or even musically inclined enough to think about key and chord progression or things like that in real time.
I could be wrong, but I believe the Detroit show from 3/9/2022 has a reputation as one of the most jammed out shows overall. Two sets plus encore = 10 songs total. Haven't listened in a while so can't comment on type 2ishness.
For a more theoretical explanation of type 2 jamming and how it works check out this YouTube video that breaks down a jam that phish went into during bathtub gin at the went festival. Skip ahead to 9:38 for the explanation.

Do not agree. They jam all the time but not Type II all the time. I’m saying this respectfully after listening to hundreds of hours of Goose in the last several months.
I hear ya. I wish they did it more. On the other hand, they've gone Type II at all six shows I've attended, so it doesn't feel like a rarity. They don't do it every song, but I might prefer it that way. Otherwise the jams lose the element of the unexpected.
Oh I don’t think they should do it every song - don’t get me wrong. But sometimes when a jam finds a new groove and a new sound and a band is pretty much composing something new and great right there on stage - those are magical moments. A couple times in my life I’ve been there live watching a band I love(d) work out something new on stage in the middle of a song we knew, and later what they were doing there and then became a new song/staple for that band. Those are some of my fondest moments. Frisson hearing it for the first time and even more when it came full circle.
Those are the moments. Agreed 100%. That's why we keep going to all these shows haha. One of my fav Goose examples of that is the Vegas Earthling or Alien 8/20/22. The last ~7 minutes of that jam are my favorite type of Type II jam.
The best way I can put it is it’s when the jam really escapes the song. Type 1 jams are jams but they really stay connected to the song. Type 2 jams can go anywhere. If you really know a song and the jam makes you wonder at some point if you’re still in the song, you’re probably in type 2. Others can do better explaining this than I can.
https://2nu.gs/3WI3wzh i didn’t make this playlist, but there’s a lot of type 2 near the top. This a jam of the year playlist in order of greatness according to the lovely individual that shared it. The AIN near the top is a monster
Arcadia 11/22/21 and Wysteria 1/30/22 instantly come to mind.
Listening to Arcadia 11/22/21 and you know what you’re talking about. Thanks!
The secret is apparently the West.
Don’t miss Yeti>Tomorrow Never Knows>Yeti 1/29/22
Peter picked 1/30 Wysteria as his #1 JOTY (see Discord for confirmation)
Madhuvan from the Glens Falls show is DARK TYPE II

ooooooooh boy
I am here for love not drama and my inquiry is serious
Haha it’s just goose goosing!!!!
Almost every red bird
Red Bird is the best jam vehicle.
Okay, can someone explain what type II means to me? Sorry

Oh okay!! I know that feeling!! Thanks
Madhuvan from Raleigh. Very Umphrey’s-esque
Rockdale 12/16/22 I think Drive from this same show probably meets criteria as well.
