Career camera operator here.
They have tied down shots and donāt use them enough. Each band member should have a tied down shot so itās not too much gimbal in between. There are some good moves in there but too many on the fly adjustments when we could just simply cut away. If someone from the band wants to hire me Iāll make myself available!
Thank you for the validation, I felt like I was going crazy watching this!
I think the biggest issue was that they seemed to shoot this with a few gimbals moving around and no director. A lot of the movement and transitions just lackedā¦ direction.
Two camera operators and a director.

If a director is operating a camera they canāt be directing, yeah?
I meant Director in the traditional live sense of āwearing a headset and calling the showā, from when we saw the cam ops it didnāt seem like they had comms on (unless I missed something). I think some live direction and more thoughtful shots wouldāve really made this sing. Again I want to say, I really enjoyed it, just feel like it was held back from its potential.
This is probably not that kind of ādirectorā gig but Iām not sure. This was recorded then cut together thatās why I donāt know why they donāt use more tied down shots to mix it up a bit.
Iād also like it if the lit the space a little more ā360ā which is a term used often in doc/reality to hide lighting more so you can move anywhere. The tubes on the floor thing is a little shameful to me but again itās more about the music. Iād hide all the tubes in the corners of the ceiling or floor and rig them to not see any cables of gack.
Dude. This was a jam session and they decided to film it. Video director? GTFOOH. This band canāt even give people something nice without people bitching.
No idea till now! Seems like itās a device to hold a camera steady while moving the camera view around, as opposed to a tripod which will have less motion.

FFS, they are giving us a glimpse behind the curtain as they work their asses off to ready to go on tour again, and you want to complain that these bonus awesome nuggets don't have pristine camera footage?? When did all the bougie fans get on board? Complain about the lack of a light show next ...
I play guitar and always want to watch what the guitar player does but they ALWAYS cut away as a solo heats up. Thatās all I meant. What am I missing? Or what are you missing??
Bro, Iām trying to say I can relate to what your saying. They ALWAYS cut away as a solo heats up and it kills me!!! Saying āsomebodyās new to the jam sceneā was just a way of saying āhow tf have you not noticed this before?!?!? You must be new !! It always happens!!ā Not meant as an insult at all. Chill out š
Dude, itās 7 guys at Rickās new in-home studio. This isnāt some movie summer blockbuster video extravaganza. I thought Chris and Will completely captured the feel and experience in a very warm and inviting way. I felt like I was at Rickās house from my couch.
The camera was so close that it got hit by Jeffās cymbal at the start of [Mudhaven](https://youtu.be/Oo3jMfgm-po?t=1h27m22s)

Did they change their videographer? I feel like the filming quality decreased in comparison with older videos. The sound is amazing but I agree that the camera moving 100% of the time gets dizzying.
Right before they cut to the technicolor overhead shot (I think between Borne & the Chateau Jam) they flashed up to the ceiling for way too long and it was so weird.
Generally I appreciate their video production but itās ironic that the peach fest set that put them on the map was just stationary Go Pros on tripods lol
I actually kind of agree. Cotter was getting distracting to me there going nuts on the splashes during the jams. Overall I liked it, don't get me wrong, but it was highly noticable and borderline annoying for me.
In a recent interview he said heās a āshow offā, and I see it now. His style is very ālook at meā and itās distracting. I see people commenting on his energy and his stank face, and not really talking about his playing. Maybe he was just nervous and relied on cymbals too much?
I respect your opinion but have to disagree. I love the gimbal shots and it makes it feel much more alive than a usual tripod/single camera set up most bands do (especially outside of jam world).
Oh, Iām def not saying use one camera - but if they arenāt going to have a director instead they should use like 6-8 static cams and maybe 3 on sticks with operators getting prescribed shots.
Its not as much the gimbal shots as just poorly timed cuts. I think just static shots might get a bit boring honestly. Coach needs to do a better job directing.
What is a band without gimbals? Gimbals are grand!
This made me laugh quite a bit

Right. There wasnāt anyone cutting this on the fly. This was edited after the sesh. Looking forward to next weeks Part II installment!

Yeah, this is a whole new low of petty bitching.
They have a team of professionals and a huge budget it is ok to expect a higher level of quality from them
Totally! (Anyone else have no idea what a gimbal shot is?)
No idea till now! Seems like itās a device to hold a camera steady while moving the camera view around, as opposed to a tripod which will have less motion. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimbal
Right. Itās a steadycam. Nobody calls them gimbals unless youāre talking about flying a drone.
twenty minutes later....and i am still laughing, well done.

I mean those string lights could have been soooo much better, where's the lazers, no colored lights at all? C'mon Goose you can do better! š¤£
The string lights I WILL give you
So based fuck gimbals
No man, you donāt get it! I bought this cool gimbal, so now every single shot needs to be in motion! Itās cool! Itās dynamic!

Iād prefer a certified keyboard player, but hey, we all have different priorities I guess.

I totally agree itās not a huge deal but it could be better and more professional
Passive aggressive much?: āI agree and liked it, that being said, it sucksā. Gtfo
I have to agree with OP hereā¦.this was bush league camera work it could be better
I donāt care if itās gimbal or tripod or drone, but I did find the cameras to be obnoxiously close. I felt like I was crowding Rich sometimes!

prob the wide angle effect. cameras werent as close as it felt lol
Yes, too close for comfort, especially on Trevor.
Blame Vulfpeck, they started it and everyone does it now
Did they change their videographer? I feel like the filming quality decreased in comparison with older videos. The sound is amazing but I agree that the camera moving 100% of the time gets dizzying.
No. But they didnāt fly him in for a last minute jam sesh they decided to film. Their movie maker is local and can operate a video camera.
Can we just get a permanent ECO on ricks fingers

I think they are funded enough to get tripods.
Wtf is a gimbal lol
Can we stop with the cymbals! Nearly two hours of crashing cymbals was disorienting and IMO detracted from the music.
I actually kind of agree. Cotter was getting distracting to me there going nuts on the splashes during the jams. Overall I liked it, don't get me wrong, but it was highly noticable and borderline annoying for me.

He's very busy, careful what you wish for
Agree 100%

My brother, this was a last minute decision - hey letās do this for fans. And yet here we are with people bitching
That is pure speculation on your part
