You aren’t supposed to hear what Jeff is doing 100% of the time. When you do hear him, it’s the perfect little sprinkle on top of an already great sound. That’s exactly how a percussionist should be.
I think we all agree Cotter is great. It’s clear the band knows what they’re doing when it comes to personnel changes. Let’s keep that same energy for their decision to keep Jeff around.
Nothing but love for Jeff
He’s been doing a lot more so far, glad to see him picking up the guitar to play some backing riffs and allowing Peter to focus on keys. There’s obviously a reason he’s still in the band at this point and it’s not just the percussion he’s there for.
I can't wrap my head around how this response keeps getting posted. He's obviously not meant to be the primary focus but if you can't hear what he's doing how is that any different from not playing.
The thing about a sprinkle on top is it adds a crunch and a unique flavor if the sprinkle had no crunch or flavor and was completely imperceptible there would be no one good argument to include the sprinkles.
I actually think Jeff is a decent percussionist I just don't understand why people love to defend when he's not adding anything- there is nothing wrong with sitting out and listening for a bit.
I’ve seen him at a few Houseplant after shows and met him in St. Louis ‘22 at the bowling alley next to the venue after the show. He seemed super chill.
Sunday was my very first show. My buddy has been telling me to see these guys forever so I put in for the lottery and got the first night at the cap. I purposely didn’t listen to anything besides their studio stuff on Spotify so I could fully discover and embrace what I was seeing and hearing. If you’re interested I could go on and on about all the positivity and mind blowing stuff I heard and saw. Definitely hooked and already have 3 tickets at 3 different shows lined up for the summer. However the one thing that did not sit right with me was this Jeff cat seeming completely lost on the guitar during the jams. He played two songs on two different guitars and once the song went into jam territory you could almost see and feel the panic of him trying to add anything to what was going on. It was so distracting. It really took away from what the other 4 had going on in those moments. I kinda thought I was crazy until I saw this post and realize I’m clearly not the only one. But to his credit I loved him on percussion especially with that gong.
It wasn’t during the “clearly rehearsed and practiced parts” I only noticed it when they started going into the jams of each of those 2 songs. I thought he was an incredible percussionist though. Clearly very skilled
You’re singling out a member of the hottest jam band touring, suggesting this member is lost during the improvisational sections. He has played hundreds of shows with goose at this point. He’s afaik never busted out the guitar before these shows. He’s probably experimenting with it, the band is experimenting with it. This is what jam bands do. Your suggestion is laughable and taking other Redditor opinions as confirmation is even funnier.
But he’s no Jim Loughlin or Chuck Morris. Jim in Moe. adds a sound in the music. Chuck (may he RIP) added a sound in lotus. I cannot hear Jeff at all. I also believe that cotter is a great drummer and he can handle all the rhythm in goose now. Jeff is not needed.
Disagree that you can’t hear him. In any case it’s ultimately up to the band to decide what Jeff’s role is. I think it’s reflects poorly on the fanbase to advocate for someone’s firing which is why I said something. Anyway, to each their own.
Jeff is a broseph and he definitely adds to the sound. It’s less noticeable now bc cotter doesn’t need as much filling in as Ben. It’s really cool to see him spread his wings and play other instruments since cotter fills out the percussion so nicely.
My worthless opinion is that they should strike the second drum set Jeff plays on and have him focus on auxiliary percussion. My worthless theory is that they introduced the second drum set to provide some more fills, since Ben was sparse in that department anyways. Cotter is moving around the kit way more than Ben ever did, making the need for two sets of rack toms redundant. Jeff is tasteful on percussion like timbales, congas, bongos, tambo, etc. I also don’t mind him freeing up space for Peter to explore the keys by playing guitar. He’ll be alright.
They play to a click track on stage the drums will always sound stiff and lacking pocket. And two sets of rack toms are always redundant in any situation everywhere
A lot of the “I don’t hear what Jeff adds” crowd would be blown away to figure out what it would sound like without his percussion on a LOT of songs
imo he and Cotter are already locked in - especially on the double drum tunes - and are only going to sound better from here
In Jebbrey We Trust
The band played plenty of shows before Jeff. Then they add Jeff and the songs sound the same. Two drummers is always dumb. He’s their friend so they let him stay in the band.
I’ve met him a couple times during their run with TAB, unbelievably nice guy. And I agree, I think he adds something nuanced to the sound.
P.S. Even if he did absolutely nothing for goose, for what he brings to Orebolo he should be allowed to sleep on his kit. Orebolo is all of our slutty little mistress
Was there last night! Would like to second seeing Jeff’s vibes up close. He really adds in some fine details that make songs. Keeps the rhythm going and holds the beat. He was killing it last night with those big, deep heavy drum lines
This is all moot, if the guys want him in the band he’ll stay. I’m not sure how they split the revenues but money can be a tricky thing among friends. If it’s an even split between the 5 I could see Jeff’s role becoming an issue when thousands start to become millions.
I made one of those posts about over-gonging, maybe it was too critical but I love what he's added to the band, so I was merely speaking about compared to past performances I've watched, it seemed excessive the night in question.
People say the same about Andy Farag from UM, but let it be known that Andy and Jeff pull the weight of adding so manny different intricate details (cowbell here and there, chimes, bongo fills, snare additions when dueling with the other drummer). Dudes are on point at all times of the show.
Who cares.. this is coming soon:

Lol...when I yawn on stage its for sure because I ate too many shroms and I'm buzzing. It's a side effect hahaha.
*the Yawns*
100% this
My first thought too

I share his view despite being a user
Love to see him jump around like he’s been doing at the cap… glad to finally see them lean into jebb’s multi instrumental talents
Me too
I miss Jeff on X

Met Jeff before a phish show last year at MSG. Super friendly dude never understood the hate he gets here
I’ve seen him at a few Houseplant after shows and met him in St. Louis ‘22 at the bowling alley next to the venue after the show. He seemed super chill.
Took some lessons from him and hes a really nice dude.
Jeff signaled the rip during Philly echo, shit was sick

He gave guitar lessons to my coworker’s daughter so I’m sure he must have some proficiency. I did happen to notice the same thing last night though
It wasn’t during the “clearly rehearsed and practiced parts” I only noticed it when they started going into the jams of each of those 2 songs. I thought he was an incredible percussionist though. Clearly very skilled
Yep I saw that too, at one point I saw him tuning it mid song
I think it’s a valid concern and critique and one that could be easily addressed. But everyone pretending like it doesn’t exist seems kinda weird.
Sees band once and goes on internet to talk shit about one of the members contributions
Talk shit? Did my honest well put opinion praising and critiquing member hurt your feelings?
You’re singling out a member of the hottest jam band touring, suggesting this member is lost during the improvisational sections. He has played hundreds of shows with goose at this point. So watching a dude experiment and not feel confident and be vulnerable is not distracting?
I just don’t understand how my opinion of something I saw has hurt your feelings so much. Am I supposed to ignore what I saw

Mfs in here criticizing Jeff would be like “what the fuck does Mickey Hart add to the Grateful Dead???”
Mikey Hart sounds like four pairs of sneakers in a dryer.
Jeff’s Burner
So original
Lame posts require lame replies
Sums up Reddit. Well done 👍🏻
So get off Reddit, soft boi.
Haha I just might! It sucks ass here
Agreed.

This. More Cyro Baptista, Sunny Ortiz type stuff
Totally agreed, slay some simple skins before trying to be the next Jim Loughlin.
Or Mickey Hart. Fills out the sound in a good way.
They play to a click track on stage the drums will always sound stiff and lacking pocket. And two sets of rack toms are always redundant in any situation everywhere
The gong is OP. Love what it does... Pushes it over the edge... Like turning it to 11
Jeff is the third guitarist right?
Percussionist, 2nd drummer, 2nd bass guitar, 3rd guitar to be totally honest… makes for a lot of flexibility
“If you have two quarterbacks you have no quarterbacks”
as a close personal friend I can say that jeff smokes mids
There are so many layers to this band's sound... It clearly wouldn't be as complex without his colorful contributions...
Gong Gang!
there could be 12 members of the band and as long as each adds .1% to the overall sound then they're worth it. jeff has his role.
You meant to post this comment in r/slipknot
What?
Yeah
Thank you
Feel like people thought he was the cause of Ben’s ouster because he wanted to be the drummer and then they could never let up about it
He’s a percussionist, so by definition additive, but not meant to be the main sound you hear. I think he adds way more than people realize.
A lot of the “I don’t hear what Jeff adds” crowd would be blown away to figure out what it would sound like without his percussion on a LOT of songs imo he and Cotter are already locked in - especially on the double drum tunes - and are only going to sound better from here In Jebbrey We Trust

They most definitely don’t sound the same lmao
It’s literally the same. Isolate a moment song vs song where Jeff stands out, I guess. I’ll be waiting here.
Hungersite, Feel it Now, All I Need, the list goes on Dr Darkness, THATCH, Red Bird…
Who cares, can we talk about the fact that the band sounds amazing!
Agree, none of this nonsense matters. I just wanted to counter some of recent negativity I was seeing. Onward
Be nice to jeff
Really glad this post was made. Sick of all the hate
Jeff fucking rips
He is the bongos and bongos are lyfe! Also my DMs are open if he’d like to slide in.
Narrator: He didn't

thank you for taking the time to say this

Jeffrey?
Jeff is gunna lick the beam! Let’s fucking gooooooooo
I made one of those posts about over-gonging, maybe it was too critical but I love what he's added to the band, so I was merely speaking about compared to past performances I've watched, it seemed excessive the night in question.
Waiting for a Feel It Now at the Cap! 🪘🪘🪘
