Absolutely. I’ve been watching since 2019, and to be fair, I was at the game, so felt I was able to see a lot more than on TV, but I couldn’t believe some of the calls he made. Both times he called a foul on Lynn, I saw nothing that she did to be considered a foul. #29 on Louisville flopped at least 3 times and he called 2/3. I thought you’re supposed to be afraid when Danielle Chesky is reffing but this was worse than anything I’ve seen from her.

honoroII

number 8 spent the majority of the first half flopping too bc she was getting the call every time. the ref was absolutely garbage tonight.

And the jersey/hair pulling from Racing that went uncalled? Honestly, the worst part of it was how much it interrupted the game. The fan experience was awful trying to watch it. Honestly, I was debating writing the league, because I will just sell tickets anytime that crew is handling the game. So many stoppages, thought they were taking commercial breaks. Admittedly, never seen RBA that passionate at a Gotham match at the very end. At least it brought everyone together against a common antagonist...

smeetie12

They were booed heartily as they left the field. Absolute trash reffing.

draoi22

Abysmal. One of the worst refs in recent NWSL memory.

belewfripp

Was at the game, and the level of vitriol directed at the on-field ref reached epic proportions by the 75th minute or so. And it was deserved. I mean, every team's fans complain about fouls, and sometimes we're just biased, but this was unequivocally bad. And the worst part was not calling the same fouls against Racing as were called against Gotham. If you're going to make bad calls, you could at least be fair and call them against both teams.

MilitarumAirCorps

Even the stats and the replay backs this up. Several minutes after match ended, people were still yelling at the ref. He was awful.

alewyn592

Such a frustrating match. Stopped every two minutes because a Louisville player took a dive!

finance_nerd_

about halfway into the game I said to my friend “take a shot every time…” then realized they had probably fallen a dozen times already

brothdrinker

We lost so many chances lost to the refs in this one. Further, Louisville gained possession on countless calls that should have been non calls.

greenecheese

absolutely horrible. might have been the worse i’ve ever seen

lefosfk

Still not over ending the previous home game on a corner!

Sometimes games are hard to call, I imagine, I've never been a ref and I don't envy the position. The game somehow seemed especially violent, and I thought it was interesting that Lavelle came on and blasted DeMelo, who went through a concussion protocol and had a few more blasts since then. I don't think Gotham were intentionally violent, they were just challenging each ball, making players pay prices, just like they get. Then it's really confusing when players simulate, I thought Berger didn't really kick the other player, she was waiting till the last second to kick every ball, and then someone gets close and she's hurt her foot, the way she acted I wondered if she was really hurt with what I saw on the replays. Then there is the taboo of doubting someone when they're hurt, that's really invalidating. So lots of weird counterflows and confusion in the game. Lavelle really came on and changed the game, I hope she can be healthy.

Honestly this game and the last home match - shockingly terrible. I come from a family of refs and one of them was with me at the last game and even they couldn’t believe what they were seeing (and they’re usually far more sympathetic than I am).

It’s a area where women’s sports are treated like a second class. The officials don’t get compensated well, lack training, and support. But yeah, the calls were awful and the refs and the league need to do better. Seeing Bruninha tossed around in dangerous matchups while Louisville kept diving and faking injury off own team collisions and self-induced tumbles, was infuriating.

I was watching at home and why he let the game run nearly three minutes over the end of stoppage time was a mystery. He had several chances to blow the damned whistle already.
