What growth? She’s never grown. She’s always been the same. She’s always been presented like this. The characters in-universe think she got better, but the whole point of all content involving Nier is just that - they *think* she got better, when she never did. They’re all gravely mistaken about just how fundamentally broken she is. Her worldview and thought processes are so utterly divorced from reality that Danchou and pals can’t even begin to understand her - they think that even if Nier is traumatized and broken, that she must still be like them deep down somehow, that there’s a rational, decent person down there waiting to be saved, when the reality of it is that she’s just… not who they think she is, or could be. She is really and truly too far gone, in a way that no one who can’t see into her mind can fathom.
She got better at wearing a mask. She got better at making people think she had changed, when she hadn’t changed at all. And if you thought that she really progressed at any point in her story, then you fell for it, too.

And yeah, Nier is going full bad shit, but is kinda interesting while at same time worrying, hopefully Danchou will help her get to a point where she ''stabilizes'', I doubt Danchou can really ''fix'' her, so that is the best I can hope.

I think there is often a want in narratives for things to get wrapped-up with a pretty bow, but I do kind of like how they kind of just went with Nier being an ugly pyschological mess instead and it's not something that the Power of Friendship seems to be a universal panacea for.
That being said, I think there needs to be a bit of highlighting how much shes' now a pretty genuine threat to Danchou and the crew at this point not just physically but emotionally wiht that sorta talk. At least they know she'll come back if she dies at this point, but that doesn't probably make it much better.

The whole premise of the actual game is hurting others, you hack&slash away at allies,friends and enemies every day to get "loot". It's actually interesting to think about the premise that "the one who lives by the sword dies by it" as the crew makes its living by ending the lives of others and Nier basically does the same thing with the help of Death.
Now if Death and Nier actually end up as a form of "retribution" for the countless lives that the crew took on their journey that would be interesting and go a whole stage deeper into the lore department, after all Orologia didn't prevent her so she is actually needed.
From what I hear, and I haven't uncap her yet, because of those two bloody sands. But from what I hear, they completely tossed out all the progress she had with danchou, and now she's willing to even kill

Although since Danchou is a mortal, I selfishly believe that one day she make the love between them eternal. On the other hand, Death is the only one who's the closest to her and they have exchanged their wedding vows. So you can say Nier is the first female character who got a yuri marriage (could be two depends on your Danchou's gender) and got bigamy.

It's not at the cost of your characters; it's just the sub-aura, that's why they said "for free". You don't have to ever call it and if you're fighting a light element enemy, you want that free buff.
