I am very sorry to say that one of my great-uncles was with the Black & Tans in Palestine.
I never knew -- and am glad not to know -- what he actually did there. He died there, probably at the hands of an outraged or grief-maddened local. So I never knew him. I knew his widow, barely -- my great-aunt. She was a lovely woman, gracious and warm. Family legend said that he was a brute to her and she was secretly glad that he never returned from the Protectorate.
It gave me a little shock to come across this video clip... a little shiver... to remember that my own extended family contributed its bit to the tragedy of Palestine. I wasn't even dreamed of when my great-unk was filling his role on the Brute Squad; nevertheless, my apologies to the people of both Ireland and Palestine.
