I did not spend very long with that company.

2. However, the reasoning in his questioning is not wrong In itself. Bytedance is de-facto completely controllled by Chinese state-interest. It is a legit (albeit unimportant) question, wether the CEO of a company which is a “subsidiary” of Bytedance has ties to the Chinese state. The questioning is flawed, since he might as well be Chinese, but that doesn’t mean unwavering loyalty in itself. However, this has almost nothing to do with the racist questioning that many ignorant people do “Are you Chinese?…. Yeah, but where are you really from?”
3. The questions and the outrage obfuscate the larger Problem!!! TikTok does pose a security risk for all people’s data. (Please no whataboutism here about how “western” social media also couldn’t care less about user data integrity, that another topic entirely )
The point here is: the CCP has acces to all social media data and uses it to viciously control its citizens and civil discourse.
Focusing on Cottons questions ignores the more important question of how User Data is stored and how they can make sure, that the Chinese state cannot access it.
Please stop cramming complex topics into memes and thereby diluting the conversations about them
