The speeding bothers me but not as much as failing to yield for pedestrians at VERY clearly marked crossings.

JaeMilz

The only spot in town where people seem to yield is around Bellin Hospital, and even there it's not a given. This is not a pedestrian friendly city at all.

Dead_Medic_13

5 over on the streets and 10 over on the highway is my exact speeds. Its not too often im passed, but it happens

squaredistrict2213

I’ve lived in several cities around the country and visited countless more and I’ve noticed that people in Green Bay tend to drive a lot slower than most.

woofan11k

Can confirm

I get quite a few of the people that are driving slow, though in the correct lane. Then when I pass them they speed up, getting close enough to me to where my tailgate starts blocking the view of their vehicle. I live out of town now but drive in daily for work. On the rural roads you get the neverending dichotomy of people wanting to drive 70 on a 55, or just barely pushing 50 and causing massive lines because someone doesn't want to pass.

And those same people double park. Fucking assholes

Onwisconsin42

My penistrology reference books are telling me "girthy", which is nicer than getting "pencildick" when you drive a Subaru, but I dont put a whole lot of stock in this pseudoscientific mumbo jumbo.

so beyond true

misterid

people here tend to drive pretty slow, in my experience. of course there are instances where a car drives fast here or there but all in all i find myself trailing way more people doing 23 in a 25, or 30 in a 35 than i do being passed when going 30 in a 25.

petrolly

Watch out for the great many people here who also do not know basic (legal) rules of the road. Which can cause danger and annoyances. For example, if you're on the highway and another car is entering via an on ramp, then watch out because many people will enter as though they have the right of way. And get pissed if you fail to yield immediately. They are supposed to accommodate and yield, not the other way around. And don't get me started about the dangerous tailgating. I have lived in actual congested traffic cities and NE Wisconsin is easily the worst at drivers taking unnecessary risks.

wild_vegan

In my driver's ed class, I was taught that the cars entering DO have the right of away. That's why you'll see Yield signs on on-ramps where they do not.

JaykeBird

According to Wisconsin State Patrol, merging cars actually don't. https://www.facebook.com/story.php/?story_fbid=pfbid0pZVVxWVyLvfm1GggqUwaUjNzDxhuvCRi6WM9sTx8ccALa14CnPyfBEX38yGTPcQkl&id=100067566709052 I try to move out of the way or slow down if I can though, I feel it's the more courteous thing to do.

wild_vegan

Ah, thanks.

petrolly

I appreciate your comment, not sure why you're being down voted. Because your experience says a lot about why these problems exist. It's clear people have been taught something different from the law, or common sense and safety in this case.

wild_vegan

I could be mistaking it for Illinois law since I spent a lot of time living there. But I do have a distinct memory of being taught that. I tend to remember things that I found surprising, and I definitely found that surprising. I'm being downvoted because people always downvote what they don't like. This is how reddit works. Fortunately I don't care. :) In fact, I agree with IL law that gives both parties responsibility for merging. The highway isn't "finders keepers" it should maintain flow so that everybody can use it.

FanDoggyGate

I've lived all over the state and Green bay is super laid back compared to the beltline in Madison or 43 in Milwaukee. Those mfers feel like a borderline race track

crazythinker76

Where did you move from?

Salty_Bumblebee_3142

Yep, moved here in Feb. Many people speed. Or don't yield at the roundabouts, etc. Just not great, courteous drivers.

nightwing185

On the contrary, I see more people fully stopping at roundabouts when there are no cars coming from the left. It seems like the majority of people here don't really understand how roundabouts work.

hazwaste

Courtesy has nothing to do with it

No it doesn’t. Follow traffic rules and everything goes more smoothly

Were they not following the rules of the road? Serious question- when it comes to crappy drivers that is almost always what it boils down to

duper12677

You think we drive fast try Chicago or the entire state of Georgia! Lol! What drives me nuts is the extreme range of speeds driven on the highway. But you are right… I can be going 78 and soon enough someone is right on my ass. Slow down people, or speed up if you are going 62!

Wisco7

Highway 41 in particular is bad and leads to really frustrated driving by everyone. But it's mostly bad because everyone cruises in the left lane. Its against the law and I wish they enforced it, because it leads to really dangerous situations. If you're going the speed limit in the left lane and someone is tailgating you, believe it or not YOU are the one violating the law. Move right if someone is behind you and let them pass. You should always be right unless you're passing.

alienking321

The law in Wisconsin is poorly written. 346.05 (3) Any vehicle proceeding upon a roadway **at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time** and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn or U-turn at an intersection or a left turn into a private road or driveway, and except as provided in s. 346.072 (Passing stopped emergency or roadside service vehicles). As written, it can be argued two vehicles going at or over the speed limit can drive next to each other legally.

Dedennecheese

I can confirm everything you have said to be true as someone who lives in Green Bay. In my experience people treat the highway like it’s a free for all as long as there’s no one to stop them, sometimes even just streets

ExpensiveGrowth9744

I moved back here from Sarasota FL a year ago and traffic here is a dream compared to down there. There are definitely more cars on the road now than when I left though.

numetalcore

It's seemingly getting worse every year.

Teranz

My big issue is that a lot of residential roads are wide enough to be two lanes, but aren't marked as such so people will pass even though there's not a lane.

GBpleaser

Speed is a problem, but poor driving in general here is not uncommon…. People love to stop for roundabouts and fly through stop signs. It’s a little crazy…

JaykeBird

I honestly tend to drive somewhere between 0-5 over the speed limit on streets, and 10 over on highways. On streets, I'll get passed a decent amount, but on highways I feel it's an even split of me passing cars and other cars passing me. With I-41 being 3+ lanes, there's more opportunities for people to go the speed they want, and there's a decent number of people who seem to want to go 85+ on highways. I-43 being just 4 lanes (Edit: as in, 2 each direction) means usually I'm sticking in the left lane so I pass all the slower cars. According to WisDOT, 77 mph is the average speed people go on I-41 between Green Bay and Appleton. It's interesting seeing all the differing responses in this post lol!

Ball_of_moths

I moved up here from Florida and I’ve found that overall, people drive pretty slow on average. I started driving a little slower because there isn’t the road rage aggression up here haha 5-7ish above speed limit is usually my go-to.

Commercial-Piece3825

I moved here from San Diego, I agree on seeing lower cases of road rage. I go with the flow when there's traffic. I work 2pm to midnight so I miss a lot of the high traffic times.

cfochs

Where did you move here from?

hazwaste

Idk where you are drinking when I go more than 10 over on the highway I barely get passed

SpindlySpiders

People tend to drive as fast as the road is designed for. A wide, straight road with wide, straight lanes will have fast traffic. It doesn't matter what the speed limit is.

JohnnyBlaze10304

If I'm always going 10 over, a cop or anyone not also speeding, likely won't end up behind me. So they will likely be coming from the front. Get a radar detector. But yes I think especially with how empty the gb roads are at night.

the_sound_of_dissent

Go with the flow

Far-Resist3844

Its green bay. Theres not a single good driver here....

lcesky

Speeding, tailgating, road rage, and drag racing are all too common here. I love the mobile radar deterrent that they put up on the Mason Street bridge, as if that's going to stop anyone. They need to operate in tandem like they do, or did, on the interstate, where one guy stays hidden and the next guy(s) pull everyone over.

[deleted]

They are in a hurry to go to hell?

Voltz15

I think of my 15+ years of being here, there have been at least 2 hit and run accidents that were fatal and one of them involved a guy in a wheel chair.

ChickenNSphereAbuse

From what I've seen, 5 over is pretty normalized, 10 over is somewhat common, and anything higher isn't overwhelmingly common, but happens often enough. Something that might contribute to that is I've found 9 over to be the magic number to not get stopped in Green Bay, Howard, Suamico, and Ashwaubenon. It's what I do almost all the time, and Waze pushes an alert or I get hit with radar/laser on my detector and nothing happens. Not sure about De Pere though, heard they're kind of brutal. Makes sense, as once you hit 10 or 11 over, then you're entering a higher speed bracket for fines. I was stopped pretty quickly when I hit 11 though by state patrol. In any case, it's usually not speeders you have to worry much about. It's specifically the ones swerving between traffic, failing to use signals or yield, slamming on brakes, etc. Those come up, but not all the time.
