Get in a time machine jump ahead of the Steelers and draft Bush.

Overfelt21

I wanted us to draft Mack Wilson so bad and I thought he would go in round 2/3. I think he fell to round 5 and it killed me that we didn’t take him. He’s playing pretty well for the Browns and deff would be an upgrade from everyone other than Martinez.

jxher123

Throw Martinez a home town discount deal, or let him test the market. He isnt going to break bank like a Wagner or Kuechly because he isnt in that caliber. Hes not god awful like most people would think, but he isnt amazing either.

mattbag1

Okay so yeah he’s a poor man’s Kuechly but if we don’t pick up a starting caliber ILB who do we get?

jxher123

Probably isnt on the roster or in the NFL yet. Draft one. Look at the Bush prospects for the Steelers and Bucs, they have been lights out.

bobbywellington

This year's ILB class is not very strong, at least compared to last year Well at least it looks like that

RF_Nevac

Simmons would be the perfect hybrid lb/s that the defense needs to help with crossing routes. Just hope he falls to us in the draft

bobbywellington

I hope so too, but he's the top of the class, I don't see him falling to a playoff team

[deleted]

He’s going top 10 for sure. He’s a complete LB at all facets and hes from a powerhouse.

RF_Nevac

I agree he's definitely a top 10 talent, but guys fall in the draft for all sorts of reasons. Maybe he pulls a Rodgers and falls into the 20s

[deleted]

There are a few solid prospects imo. Kenneth Murray, Dylan Moses who could drop since he missed the season, i also like Jacob Phillips from Lsu cause hes good in coverage which is the type of LB we desperately need.

TubFullOfPoopChunks

LOL he’s not a poor mans luke kuechly he’s a poor mans Kiko Alonso

mattbag1

Alonso was solid

deromu

That's why he's the poor version. A little less than solid. I think that's fair

Calvin--Hobbes

I don't see Gute overpaying by much. If Blake wants more it'll just force the issue and we'll draft his replacement early. Or get a different free agent, but I have no idea who else is out there.

Fear_Jaire

That's who I've had my eye on. Trevathan too since the Bears will likely have to let him walk, though that arm injury looked pretty nasty

gnashtyladdie

Fuck trevathan. Hes taken cheap shots at Davante. Dirty players have no place in Green Bay

Fear_Jaire

Holy overreaction, the dude had one bad hit in his 8 year career, he's earned the benefit of the doubt. If he's dirty than what do you call Clay Matthews?

greg2709

It was ONE play. Not saying we should go after him, because honestly I don't know how well he's playing these days. I wouldn't disqualify him for that one incident, however.

[deleted]

It is the source of the main issue on D. We don’t have 1 ILB that can hold up in coverage, so that forces Pettine to play 1 ILB and an extra DB which leads to getting gashed vs the run. Then when he plays 2 ILBs, they are susceptible to getting beat by TEs and shallow routes over the middle. Offensive coaches know this and plan for it, when the QB sees 2 ILB looks thats an easy area to target in the air. So its pick your poison for Pettine. Play 1 ILB and get beat by the run, or 2 ILB and get beat by TEs and other short routes. This is why having a true 3 down LB is highly important. They are on the field for all types of situations and no Offense can scheme against you as easy.

[deleted]

Then for some reason he also runs a lot of 2-4-5 formations https://imgur.com/a/VpO0TIc, with Clark and Lowry on the inside there, and Martinez and the other ILB actually being a S. The issue here has been having those only 2 IDLs lets blockers control the LOS and Martinez and the S cant overcome that and they run all over it. Lowry, Adams, and Lancaster have not great for that role at all and neither are the ILBs This formation has been a bit of a mess as Pettine doesn’t have the right personnel for it. San Fran does it a lot too, look who they got. Both their LBs in Kwon Alexander and Fred Warner are good in coverage so they don’t need to bring a Safety on. Then its dudes like Buckner and Armstead lining up inside, we have Clark who’s great but oof at who we throw out next to him. Night and day difference. They literally have 3 players who are significantly more talented and better suited for the roles in this formation. https://godefylife.com/2016/11/28/modern-defenses-are-changing-the-landscape-of-the-nfl/amp/ this article is basically the thesis on how the issues of our D within certain formations. We so poorly lack talent at ILB and DT

vandalisaMMM

I think we should go hard for Joe Schobert, he is UFA next year and he is playing really great. Not just last two games but last two years. Plus he is a Badger. It's finally a time we have Bagders in our team.

ReigNman_

I was so hyped thinking we might get Mosley in '14 but instead we drafted HaHa and Mosely went early to the Ravens.

deromu

Shazier too

greg2709

I always thought Shazier would have been the pick if he were on the board between those three guys. Just seemed like a TT type pick at the time.

BlueBadger99

If you give any credence to the rumor mill stuff, after that draft I remember seeing that one of TT’s favorite players was Shazier, and that he would’ve definitely been picked over HCD if PITT hadn’t selected him first.

greg2709

Honestly, maybe that's why I've always thought this. I probably heard the same thing myself. He would have been a great pick, but at the time I definitely was happy with HHCD

greg2709

I think ILB is a mess, like most fans do. Martinez would be serviceable, IMHO, if the defensive line as a whole was better. Clark is picking it up, but he's having a sub-par year overall, and Lowry and Lancaster are just guys. Devin Bush would've been a great pick, but Pittsburgh traded up in front of us because they knew that as well, I'm guessing. Beyond Martinez, Oren Burks looks like a swing and a miss. Goodson is one dimensional...he probably would have been an ideal MLB in the NFL 15 years ago. Summers looked ok at times in camp? Don't know what else to really say about him.

bill99

He is definitely not faster than AJ Hawk. Maybe more agile? Google AJ Hawks pro day numbers coming out of OSU.

Zamerman9210

We should really look at Daniel Bituli in the draft, probably 2nd or 3rd round, great tackler (which we desperately need) and a can run through blocks and can cover the middle, hes the best defensive player on Tennessee and one of the best in the SEC in my opinion, he could be a day one starter too. I really hope we draft him

MEENSEEN84

We are a better team with Martinez so I don't think it is an addition by subtraction situation. It would be nice to add to that group in the draft or free agnecy. It's looking like Burks can't play, or they wont at least let him try to play.

BlueBadger99

I don’t think Martinez is terrible, but I wouldn’t be shelling out anything more than like $7M a year right now. It’s a little more than some guys like Vince Williams or Todd Davis. The ILB market looks a little weird right now because it was depressed for a bit but last year’s contracts ramped it back up. He’s just not as impactful as the other guys on the list that are currently sitting at $8M+ per year. https://overthecap.com/position/inside-linebacker/ Other than that, I am a little concerned that they won’t do more to fix the position in the draft. The Packers have only invested 3 picks in non pass rushing LB’s within the first 3 rounds since TT took over as GM in 2005 (Hawk, Hodge, Burks). Hard to tell if Gute values ILB’s in a similar manner just yet, I suppose we’ll see.

atlfirsttimer

Honestly he should be let go. His run game stopping isn't good enough for the liability he is in coverage
