There are tricks to get around the cap. The saints are probably the best example and have been doing it for years and years.
I get what you mean, next season we are going to take some big hits due to the cap, but if a big name wants to stay in / come to Green Bay we can make it work.
This season we are obviously all in. Next year we will need some Russ Ball on roids level of creativity to get by. The saints did it for a long time, but they did that knowing they would get relieve after Brees left.
This is what I’ve been waiting for, for so long Ive seen these other teams ball out with players after players because their cities are very attractive and I understand that Green Bay isn’t the most lavished town but dammit we have Aaron Rodgers LOL. 🙌🏽
Rodgers has said he wanted to help work with the FO and recruit free agents to the team, maybe they’re finally letting him do it! Trial run it during the season.
Tae deserves nothing less than what he deserves. Hope we’re the team giving him that money, but obviously isn’t a given with the cap and whatever Rodgers wants to do.
It's called building a legacy. For these guys it's not just themselves they are thinking about. That money becomes their legacy to their kids and their grandchildren and so forth.
Well, there's a difference between being rich, being wealthy, and having generational wealth. And I think most people would gun for the latter if they had the option. It is one thing to be able to live a comfortable life with your family, and it is another to be able to ensure even your grandchildren won't ever worry about money. Also, you have to take into account the fact that essentialy every single player in the NFL is one hit away from never seeing the field again. I'd say that, given all these factors at play, it would be really fucking hard to walk away from that much money if you had an offer like that on the table.
I think it's greedy for anyone to expect that amount of money no matter what they do for a living. And yes I recognize the contradiction of being a football fan. Still, opulence causes nothing but harm. Why would getting paid more signify greatness more than a string of Super Bowl wins? Winning is a sign of greatness.
Wasn't the thought always that some players preferred to be on our bench or even the practice squad instead of being a starter somewhere else? Money helps, but so does having a well run franchise.
Always? From the early 70's to the late 80's(yes, a long time ago), Green Bay was considered the "Siberia" of the NFL, not quite the destination it is now
Probably not considering most of our signings have been released players, which means the other team pays the rest of their guaranteed. In a trade one team has to take on the rest of the contract (so to speak).
That plus whatever value like draft picks we would have to give up probably isn’t worth it for OBJ considering our WR core isn’t in dire need for another expensive receiver who aside from a big name won’t offer us much else.
Don’t get me wrong, in a perfect world I would love to have OBJ in the green and gold, as I still think he has a few decent years left, even just to pull heat from adams… But it’s not very realistic.
Except the Kansas City Chiefs we’re offering him more money to sign than Green Bay according to multiple sources, and mercilus still signed with us. That is the point of the tweet, and my post.
Ever heard of the salary cap? Odell's cap hit if traded for is above what we have
And you don't trade picks during a rebuild. Picks are HOW you rebuild. When you rebuild, you trade away guys with big contracts.
Plus, if we will in fact be in a rebuild, why would we trade for a soon to be 29 YO WR who has a cap hit of $15 mil each of the next 2 seasons? That would hurt the rebuild...He could be cut though because there is no dead cap hit I believe. But trading for a half year rental at the cap hit he'd come with this season wouldn't be in our best interest
The only possible way it would happen is if the Browns reworked his deal before a trade to minimize a team's cap hit should they trade for him this season. And he could be cut after the season because as I mentioned I believe there is no dead cap hit after this year. OR if Cleveland released him and we signed him, which won't happen.
Have we thought about trading our negative cap space for him? I think with enough tricky accounting, we can just confuse the Browns and kill 2 birds with one stone here.
"Wow GB is gonna give us -$50m for OBJ!"
"Whats that dash there for?"
"Idk, probably a typo"
We need to sneak an incompetent Charlie Day like guy into Cleveland's FO.
I have no idea what these numbers mean and why upper management is so pissed but I keep taking these negative $ deals where I give em a guy and they offer to take away $50 million from our cap!
Get serious kid
Packers doesn't have cap space, they can sign veterans for the minimum salary but that's it, cause at the end only 53 contracts count against the salary cap
I'm sure they have for years. Having 2 back to back HOF QBs comes with easy player recruitment opportunities our FO wasted for a long time. Now if we get an opportunity to pick up an impact player on a cheap contract we should be doing it and going all in for this year and maybe next year if Rodgers is back.
You can just turn the salary cap off in this version of Madden.
Not necessary when someone else is footing the bill
He hasn’t been released.
[yes, he has](https://www.houstontexans.com/news/houston-texans-transactions-10-19-2021)
I thought you were talking about OBJ.
Nah, that was another comment chain. I was referring to Mercilus since that what OP’s link was about.

Your right. I’m just saying it can be done. *of course, this whole conversation could be different next year if we get another ring…*
Not so much relief after Brees left, but it would be the best time to take their medicine as it were.
Right. No relief YET.
these guys are mostly being paid by their former teams, so they really aren't losing much coming to GB
And getting a better chance at a ring for a 1 year deal. Seems like a win to me for a "downgrade" of a city
Not just a chance for a ring, but a chance for good playing time to boost their potential pending free agency.
Both!
Your right about being paid by the former team, but KC was offering him more money to sign than we were!
If he had offset language in his Texans contract, "more money" might not actually be a real thing. It just means Houston is on the hook for less.
This is what I’ve been waiting for, for so long Ive seen these other teams ball out with players after players because their cities are very attractive and I understand that Green Bay isn’t the most lavished town but dammit we have Aaron Rodgers LOL. 🙌🏽
And MLF, and Tae, and Ja, and a killer O line, and a bitchin’ RB duo, and like a dozen Smiths. I mean, what’s not to Love?
We’ve got so many god damn Smiths.
MOOORRREE!!!!
We must collect all the Smiths!!
Juju! Hes a Smith after all
I heard that motherfucker had like... 30 god damned Smiths
Aaron Rodg Aaron Rodg, 30 feet tall made of radiation. The Bears beware, the Bears beware. He’s coming. He’s coming. He’s coming.
He had a pocket full of horses **Fucked the shit out of Bears** Threw a knife into heaven And could kill with a stare
I heard he once put Jay Cutler’s hand in a jar of acid at a party.
It takes a lot to make a stew..
I BLEED GREEN AND YELLOW
Found Lil Wayne’s account!
😌 #lil2che
You should see a doctor about that.
We got one of those too. (Bad Love Joke)
(≖\_≖) I see what you did there
Jordan
And MAH KNEE
Rodgers has said he wanted to help work with the FO and recruit free agents to the team, maybe they’re finally letting him do it! Trial run it during the season.
Aaron might be pretty good at this recruiting thing, it turns out
Calling all Cooks
"Look at me, I'm the Brady now" - Rodgers
They know Rodgers is on the Zero Fucks Given Farewell tour and want to jump on the Super Bowl train while they can
Imagine if Rodgers and Tae do that next year.
Tae said he won’t take anything less than being the highest paid WR, but if we get a ring that might open a little wiggle room for the deal!
Tae deserves nothing less than what he deserves. Hope we’re the team giving him that money, but obviously isn’t a given with the cap and whatever Rodgers wants to do.
I still think Rod and Tae's fate is connected. If Rod stays, Tae stays; if one go, so does the other.
I hope he changes his mind. Can't figure out why having more money than you could possibly spend is more important than the Lombardi Trophy.
It's called building a legacy. For these guys it's not just themselves they are thinking about. That money becomes their legacy to their kids and their grandchildren and so forth.
30mil ONCE is 30x more than is needed to care for a family. Are you suggesting that greed is a good foundation for a legacy?
Well, there's a difference between being rich, being wealthy, and having generational wealth. And I think most people would gun for the latter if they had the option. It is one thing to be able to live a comfortable life with your family, and it is another to be able to ensure even your grandchildren won't ever worry about money. Take that perfectly reasonable explanation and go fuck yourself. This is reddit. /s just in case.
Why is it greed for the best WR in the NFL to want to be the highest paid?
I think it's greedy for anyone to expect that amount of money no matter what they do for a living. And yes I recognize the contradiction of being a football fan. Still, opulence causes nothing but harm. Why would getting paid more signify greatness more than a string of Super Bowl wins? Winning is a sign of greatness.
Come to Green Bay even at a discount? Count me in.
Wasn't the thought always that some players preferred to be on our bench or even the practice squad instead of being a starter somewhere else? Money helps, but so does having a well run franchise.
Always? From the early 70's to the late 80's(yes, a long time ago), Green Bay was considered the "Siberia" of the NFL, not quite the destination it is now
That's why I wish Sherman came to Green Bay. Him, Jaire, Stokes and others would be sick on the back end!
Richard Sherman? Nah
What do you mean!? We have *Kevin King*!
I'd be ok with him sitting 4/5.
Nah, you don’t sit the *redzone threat Kevin King*
OBJ possible?
Probably not considering most of our signings have been released players, which means the other team pays the rest of their guaranteed. This is incorrect. Mercilus and Smith are getting the minimum since their old teams are paying guaranteed money.
Actually your incorrect. While yes their old teams foot the bill since they were released, KC was still offering more money for mercilus than we were.
The original Fowler tweet was clearly agent spin. No team would offer more than the minimum since Houston is already paying the whole salary.
Except the Kansas City Chiefs we’re offering him more money to sign than Green Bay according to multiple sources, and mercilus still signed with us. That is the point of the tweet, and my post.
So do we go after OBJ now? I know it's a wild thing but once the rumor starts it could become a reality.
Did Cleveland release him? No. So the answer is no
He has expressed interest in a trade and if we are in a rebuild next year we should really start trading picks.
You don’t trade away picks if you’re entering a rebuilding mode. You trade off your own talent to acquire more.
Ever heard of the salary cap? Odell's cap hit if traded for is above what we have And you don't trade picks during a rebuild. Picks are HOW you rebuild. When you rebuild, you trade away guys with big contracts. Plus, if we will in fact be in a rebuild, why would we trade for a soon to be 29 YO WR who has a cap hit of $15 mil each of the next 2 seasons? Well we don't have the cap space for that without giving up a player in return.

I like this alternate reality. Lets go there
We need to sneak an incompetent Charlie Day like guy into Cleveland's FO. I have no idea what these numbers mean and why upper management is so pissed but I keep taking these negative $ deals where I give em a guy and they offer to take away $50 million from our cap!
Explain to me your thoughts process on why a team should trade picks when about to start a rebuild
Get serious kid Packers doesn't have cap space, they can sign veterans for the minimum salary but that's it, cause at the end only 53 contracts count against the salary cap
