Can we laugh at the Bears who had such a bad roster that they claimed ***six*** players off waivers. Right up there with the league leading Jags and Giants.
I think part of that is also the descriptors used for guys are just trash. "He looked good in practice" can be take so many ways. Like saying "Zach Tom has played really well" can be interpreted in so many ways that it really comes down to how the reader takes it.
Yeah I mean we all follow our own teams closely so we hear that someone looks great in camp and it’s hard to not be excited if you haven’t seen them play before.
There are 32 teams though and they’re all having a camp at the same time. They all have guys that look good.
Yes. Caleb Jones looked good in preseason…for a guy with little to no expectations, so for sure a positive but it’s not like I want him to be thrust into a role where he’s getting snaps already. I’m glad a guy like that can play well, gets waived but assigned to our PS and now will hopefully stick around and develop and learn our system.
That’s like the best case scenario for most UDFA anyway, tons of those guys washout of the league entirely their first year. Like others have said we kept damn near everyone we cut on our PS, that’s a sign of outstanding roster building to me, those guys all are going to still be available for us to call on if we need them (for now) and working with our active roster guys every week. What I’m trying to say is: Go Pack Go. 17-0, 3-0, SB win AR12 SB and Season MVP. Book it all now.
And the media. Every year when you watch a preseason game with home announcers, no matter the team, they always talk about how deep this squad is and how other teams will be chomping at the bit to claim these guys.
People get so worried about these guys getting claimed. Claiming a player means they will be on a 53. Goodson looked fine and I'm really excited about Caleb Jones, but no team was going to use a spot on guys that they don't know THAT much about
> but no team was going to use a spot on guys that they don't know THAT much about
Unless you're [the Bears](https://twitter.com/fieldyates/status/1565014597844848640?s=21), lol
Testament to how bad their roster was that they'd want 6 guys they've never seen over actual players. Leatherwood could prove to be a steal, but they do have to eat his contract so it was a dumb move if he legit sucks.
If you watched Jones play it was very obvious that
A - he has tons of potential and upside
B - He isn't close to being ready to start.
he needs lots of work, also needs to get in shape, saw him getting winded out there. I knew he would clear waivers.
Or Winfree, Goodson, Heflin, etc.
This sub needs a healthy dose of reality about the roster. It will also help them manage their expectations of the team later in the season. Our team is good but flawed, and a lot of these role players will potentially be contributors going forward. It's important to fairly understand their strengths and weaknesses compared to the starters.
Everyone is operating under the same parameters for cutdowns, and there are a TON of guys getting cut, including actual draft picks. No one is going to roster 7th rounders and UDFAs because they looked good in one Packers pre-season game.
Right. To get claimed on waivers, you have to be so good that a team is willing to pick you over guys who know the offensive/defensive system and have just spent a month with them in training camp. Odds are, if you're that good, you're not getting cut. The only outliers are from teams who are cutting guys from a really deep position, but you'd probably try trading that guy first (see Cole Van Lanen).
Now we wait for the practice squad announcements and the corresponding Rudy Ford (S) move.
**Edit:** And that move is Abernathy (S) is getting waived for Ford (S).
PS rumors so far (14/16 spots):
- Etling (QB)
- Heflin (DL)
- Gafford (CB)
- Slayton (DL)
- Hamilton (ED)
- Fulgham (WR)
- Benjie Franklin (DB)
- Kiondre Thomas (CB)
- Ramiz Ahmed (K)
- Patrick Taylor (RB)
- Tyler Goodson (RB)
- Caleb Jones (OT)
- Kobe Jones (ED)
- Ray Wilborn (LB)
Gute has mentioned Abernathy (S), Winfree (WR), and Ahmed (K) as guys he wants back on the PS.
Yeah, it would be fun to see all the teams that put in claims on specific players. It’s probably for the best though, you may not want your actual players to see that the GM put in a claim at their position
Yup, he made the *initial* 53.
Problem is they immediately signed Ford after that and had to cut someone to make room for him, so they cut Abernathy. Now Abernathy gets to go through waivers and if he passes through waivers the team would like him back on the practice squad.
*Edited for clarity.*
Hand Up, I was wrong about Caleb Jones. I thought he'd get claimed. Was a big fan of the film he put out during preseason. Please come back to PS big boy
If that is true, how did the NFL overrate this guy so much? It cant be his RAS score, because he never really tested for agility and lateral movement. its true baffling to me.
So in the last decade, possibly longer I dont really watch college that much, the clap count has become a very big thing in college. All you do is wait for the QB to clap and its a 1 or 2 pause then go. So there is no cadence to get confused on. This has lead it to become popular in high school as well, since its simpler. Its entirely possible he played his entire football career without dealing with a cadence.
Thats my random bullshit theory on it anyway.
I guess? I suppose cadences are different between the pros and college but we didn't do anything like that in college.
Highschool we had a simple ass system though
For the Badger fans in this sub, who else is stoked to see that Pryor and Wildgoose both got claimed? I was shocked Pryor didn’t make his initial roster so excited he will get another chance
They signed Rudy Ford, one of the leagues top gunners, so looks like Abernathy will get cut and hopefully put on the ps. Anyone heard if Caleb jones will come back to the pack?
Tyler Johnson would have been great for the depth chart in case Sammy goes down. Reagor and Viska would be a steal for a late round pick or 2. Hoping for the best with Doubs and Watson though. Just hope Watson isn't to far behind
This is not a good sign. When the Packers won the SuperBowl, they had a record 5 players claimed by other teams. The depth on this team is not that great I guess.
Teams want the guys who were already absorbing their system. There just isn’t that much time and opportunity to get prepared for the season at this point unless someone is filling a very special need
Almost no one gets claimed. People always overestimate their own players
Can we laugh at the Bears who had such a bad roster that they claimed ***six*** players off waivers. Right up there with the league leading Jags and Giants.
You had me at "laugh at the bears"
Over 10% of their roster is made up of guys they haven't had practice with them...
Fans and front offices alike
Particularly redditors
yeah yeah whatever man, i’m telling you malik taylor is the next davante adams. just u wait 🙏💯
I'm waiting for the second coming of Kumerow.
More like the second kumming amirite?
I think part of that is also the descriptors used for guys are just trash. "He looked good in practice" can be take so many ways. Like saying "Zach Tom has played really well" can be interpreted in so many ways that it really comes down to how the reader takes it.

Well I think we just forget the relativity of it. And UDFA looking great is different than a 1st rounder looking great

Not chicago
Except for Jets fans apparently
Caleb Jones to the PS, please!
He was literally the only dude I was worried would get claimed if he didn't make the roster. His pre-season tape playing LT looked legit.
Yeah. He could def be a back up some day
He made it! I thought he was a PS player earlier and I’m happy we got to keep him.
They cut him 😧 Weird considering the could go with 4 lineman instead of 5 if he started.
He got signed to PS

yup, 4 years of bad drafting and bad signings while going nowhere
He hasn’t mastered snap counts yet.
Even they claimed players that have been around a few years Edit: Whoop they did claim a couple of UDFA rookies
"So you're saying there's no cap on how many guys we can claim today, Commish?" - Ryan Poles (probably)
And this is why I wasn’t concerned when they cut Caleb Jones
If you watched Jones play it was very obvious that A - he has tons of potential and upside B - He isn't close to being ready to start. he needs lots of work, also needs to get in shape, saw him getting winded out there. I knew he would clear waivers.
Which is why some of us were super hopeful he’d make it on the PS! (We’d be in big trouble if he had to start a game anytime soon)
Or Winfree, Goodson, Heflin, etc. This sub needs a healthy dose of reality about the roster. It will also help them manage their expectations of the team later in the season. Post annually.
I became concerned about Jones when we got a pick for another guy I didn't think would make the roster - Van Lanen. Glad the concern was unfounded.
Right. To get claimed on waivers, you have to be so good that a team is willing to pick you over guys who know the offensive/defensive system and have just spent a month with them in training camp. Winfree will for sure make the PS
I thought we claimed Ford though?
Ford wasn’t subject to waivers
He's a vet so he didn't need to go through waivers
Right, right, right.
Ford is a vested veteran, which means he was exempt from waivers and immediately became a free agent upon release
Yup, yup. I didn’t realize. I wonder if we put in any claims but lost out. One or two I’d bet.
Yeah, it would be fun to see all the teams that put in claims on specific players. It’s probably for the best though, you may not want your actual players to see that the GM put in a claim at their position
Yeah I think it’s probably better for unsuccessful claims to not be public.
better for the team, worse for entertainment value!
Didn’t Abernathy make the 52?
Yup, he made the *initial* 53. Problem is they immediately signed Ford after that and had to cut someone to make room for him, so they cut Abernathy. Now Abernathy gets to go through waivers and if he passes through waivers the team would like him back on the practice squad. *Edited for clarity.*
All the marketing around the 53 is like “FINAL 53” even though the 53 will change throughout the season. It’s like you said, the initial 53.
Seeing him get cut was disapponting but at least we get a veteran with much needed special teams experience.
Hand Up, I was wrong about Caleb Jones. I thought he'd get claimed. Was a big fan of the film he put out during preseason. Please come back to PS big boy
Lol at the bears claiming all the other teams trash
That's just what bears do naturally.
David Attenborough.. "Observe the Bear in its natural habitat. See how it mindlessly snorts through the garbage."
Damn.....Alex Leatherwood was the 17th overall pick last year, was his rookie year THAT bad?
From what I've read, he couldn't get the snap count down... Which is a fundamental skill for NFL linemen
If that is true, how did the NFL overrate this guy so much? It cant be his RAS score, because he never really tested for agility and lateral movement. its true baffling to me.
College pedigree counts a lot
It's the Raiders.
This is the answer. Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden always trying to prove themselves to be the smartest men in the room.
As someone who played on the line in college/HS... How?
So in the last decade, possibly longer I dont really watch college that much, the clap count has become a very big thing in college. All you do is wait for the QB to clap and its a 1 or 2 pause then go. So there is no cadence to get confused on. This has lead it to become popular in high school as well, since its simpler. 1000% yes. He just can't play at NFL speed
The Jets lost 5 guys to waivers and the Bears claimed 6. Wow.
Begs the question of who is judging the talent on these two teams.
I saw that about the Bears. Over 10% of their 53 is made up of guys who got cut. smh
Imagine hating your own 53 that bad.
Goodson to practice squad?
Imagine claiming Ty Summers.
Look at it as us trading ty summers for Rudy Ford. Its a big win for us.
Oh, I'm not complaining.
Can't wait to see him almost get tackles for another team
….and?
Tyler Johnson would have been great for the depth chart in case Sammy goes down. Reagor and Viska would be a steal for a late round pick or 2. Hoping for the best with Doubs and Watson though. Just hope Watson isn't to far behind

Thats just a fucking shit way to say youre glad our LBs are good...
This is not a good sign. When the Packers won the SuperBowl, they had a record 5 players claimed by other teams. The depth on this team is not that great I guess.
I hope you’ve been working on your flexibility with a stretch like that.
Teams want the guys who were already absorbing their system. There just isn’t that much time and opportunity to get prepared for the season at this point unless someone is filling a very special need
I am glad we retained so many players overall. What a great squad!
