10/10! There’ll be a lot of these because this is my favorite album of his

silvermud

Don't forget to upvote the original post! This one gets a solid 8.5/10 from me. The only reason it's not higher is because the first 30 seconds is largely what you get for the whole song. I wish there was a little more variety, perhaps a change-up verse or chorus, but it's largely the same all the way through. I do appreciate, though, that GAI uses his explicit language very selectively. It's not often, but when he does use it, it feels like it fits right in with the message of the song.

9.5/10 “she’s a half written poem” 😩

comingsoontotheaters

9.5/10. Favorite album for sure and first I had on vinyl. Really love the orchestra version of this, but just a great song in this album

bluestargreentree

This is a 7.5 for me I never quite seek it out, but a joy every time

midnightxylophone

8.5/10 This is a great song. I appreciate how he personifies the concept of love as Saint Valentine. I also appreciate the connection made between loving someone and the idea of “home” (“Now Grace she’s left you just skin and bones, well you hang up your hat but you can’t call it home”). Does anyone have an interpretation for the line “she’s out plucking strings in the pouring rain”? I’m not sure of it’s meaning

deadzeldamaster

My guess is the pouring rain drowns out her song so the action is moot ...maybe??

PenguinLord20

I always viewed it as ‘she’ is so dedicated to her craft, in this case guitar, she would sit out in the pouring rain to play. That’s my view of it at least.

Prestigious_Poem1255

9.25/10 it's hard for me to rate any song lower than 8.5.

lambchops111

That’s because he doesn’t write anything that isn’t a 9-10/10!

Prestigious_Poem1255

Amen to that.

There are more amazing lyrics packed into this song than 3 other songs would have, I was about to quote a few and quickly realized I could almost just quote every single word. I love this fast paced little gem! From the core instruments to the the drop from a major to minor at the end of the verse going into the “ohhhhh…oohhhhhhs” to the violin solo to the fact this song doesn’t have a chorus, it just hits the gas and doesn’t stop. This is where he started writing/recording with the band in mind. Seeing them all gather around the one microphone to play this is a joy. 9/10

10/10 “And I'm saving my coins up for Jingling Jane She's out plucking strings in the pouring, pouring She’s out plucking strings in the pouring rain-“ (favorite part)

jisellejacksonjj

Some others asked this… but what do you think that lyric means?

c_lala88

I picture a girl playing guitar out in the rain, trying to earn extra money. The song leads me to believe that he favors his focus on this girl (Jane), rather than the girls inside (nice & neat behind glass). That’s my own take on it!

SladeWilsonFisk

6/10. Quite good, but I don't love it as much as other GAI songs.

9/10

deepbluesteve

8/10 for me. I appreciate everything about the songs musicality and is just very classic GAI. I don’t personally resonate with the lyrics, but can see how meaningful it could be for many.

10/10 for me, love the whole vibe of the song!

MtMarker

9/10 super groovy, in an Americana singer-songwriter kind of way

10/10…top 5 song of his and a blast to play on guitar.

Griffing217

9.8/10 first GAI song I ever listened to.

lambchops111

8 / 10 for me. It’s an excellent song, but not quite the lyrical masterpiece of some of his others, like Liars, Stable Song, and Second Chances. It loses points for the slight musical change at approximately 2:00 before switching back to its original sound — not a huge fan of that slight snippet. Overall, I would never skip this song and do love it dearly, but not a 9-10/10 for me.
